China and Nepal began their first-ever joint military exercises on Sunday, a move likely to rattle India as Beijing boosts its influence in the region.

Impoverished Nepal is sandwiched between China and India and has in recent years ping-ponged between the sphere of influence of Delhi and Beijing as the Asian giants jostle for regional supremacy.

The 10-day drill in Kathmandu, dubbed “Sagarmatha Friendship 2017” referring to the Nepali name for Mount Everest, will focus on counter-terrorism, according to Nepal's army.

“This is in line with our efforts to hold joint exercises with countries that have diplomatic relations with Nepal,” military spokesman Jhankar Bahadur Kadayat told AFP.

The drills will likely be watched closely by India, which is often accused of playing “big brother” to its tiny neighbour.

Landlocked Nepal remains dependent on India for the majority of its imports, but the previous administration aggressively courted China as part of a nationalist drive to decrease the country's reliance on New Delhi.

“Nepal and China share a multi-faceted tie and a joint military exercise broadens that relationship,” said Tanka Karki, former Nepali ambassador to China.

Last month China's defence minister Chang Wanquan visited Nepal ─ the first by a Chinese defence minister in 15 years ─ to discuss the joint military exercise.

The current Maoist-led government in Nepal has sought to repair strained ties with Delhi while continuing to accept cash from its powerful northern neighbour.

China has lavished grand infrastructure promises on Nepal, including recently pledging $8.3 billion in investment ─ equivalent to nearly to 40 per cent of its entire GDP.

The commitment dwarfed India's investment offer of $317 million.

Seems like India's posturing is really annoying all of its neighbours. Think the mighty Indian superpower needs a reality check.

There goes Nepal in China's pocket, only Hopes are Bangladesh , Iran and Afghanistan now.

Nepal should be careful before china starts claiming their territory. They will give Nepal a fancy Chinese name and will proclaim that Nepal was historically always part of China.

Nepalese are still dependent on India if china starts offering them jobs, subsidies and visa free travel then people too will be in Chinese pocket.

Nepal is too Indian to be going into China's pocket.

Money makes up for desperate situation.Pakistan was part of India but now they are more dependent on China for investments so we cannot rule out any situations. All we can do is stand on our own legs we can't stop others from falling into some one else lap due to desperate situations.

Nepal, a Hindu country that is culturally identical to India shares our insecurities when it comes to China. Also, geographically too, it is impossible for Nepal to have a fruitful interaction with China. If it was easy, there would already be immense Chinese influence in Nepal.

Money trumps culture.

Money trumps culture.

Money doesn't just fly. It needs trade, it needs contact. Refer a map to see why Nepal and China being trade buddies isn't a possibility. If China tries something like this, the costs will outweigh the benefit.

I know, but they can still bankroll to install some proxies to trouble us.
