China to supply potential coronavirus vaccine to Pakistan: WSJ report

I wonder which country does business with Pakistan when it doesn't suit them.

Frankly I could care less about India supplying British Covid vaccines to whomever they want, it was your friend joshila bhai who suggested they could be supplied to Pakistan. Perhaps he can explain the intricacies of trade terms between the two nations.

This shows Pakistan does not have a small minded petty mentality. Would be better if India themselves could show ability to look beyond narrow and selfish focus.

It is pakistan's necessity so they exempted pharmaceuticals from all bans, rest trade was banned by Pakistan from August 9 2019.

If pakistan wants the covid vaccine, they should hold a consultation with India, hopefully some doses will be delivered under emergency usages Authorization.

Yes your saffron clad compatriot already mentioned India does business with Pakistan when it suits them. It's a start.

If you removed your green tinted glasses you would know that it was pakistan which banned trade with India on 9th August 2019.

If Pakistan wants the British AstraZeneca vaccine they can probably get it directly from Britain. But I imagine it would be too expensive and not ship on time. Similarly I can't see them jumping through hoops for supply from the reseller India where the vaccine is mass produced considering Indian hostility for the last two decades. Used some common sense.

Does UK have spare capacity to provide vaccines?

India will produce 3.6bn plus doses of the vaccine this year. Second highest and far beyond the required doses to vaccinate the entire population.

Political hostility is one thing, emergency humanitarian medical needs another. If pakistan does ask India to supply the vaccine and India refuses, as an Indian i will be very disappointed with the Indian government.

Pakistan will probably look to China for supply of the vaccine as they have good trade relations with them. India needs to reach out to Pakistan in order to improve relations before there would be enough trust to order supply of vaccines for Covid as we have plenty of evidence that India's chief aim for Pakistan is to weaken it as much as possible through propaganda and covert ops.

I dont know if some can confirm but I have read that those who have recovered from the virus get the same level of protection as those who have not been infected but got the vaccine..can somebody confirm?

Britain doesn't manufacture the vaccine. They are getting it from You guys lol. So if we wanted this particular one, we would be better off asking India. As far as I know, Pakistan is going for one of the chinese vaccines and is also relying on Covax so lets see what happens. When compared to other countries I think pakistan has a bit more leeway as we have managed the crisis reasonably well and recoveries are high. Hence why I suspect the govt feels it can take a bit more time to get the right vaccine it wants.

It would actually be a good move from the govt to initiate dialogue with India to get the vaccine and could possibly break the ice but I dont think in the current "ghusay wala" environment its gonna happen. I believe the Chinese have promised to supply us with whatever we need so hence the different approach.

The chinese vaccine's efficacy is way lower than Modernas's and Pfizer's vaccine. I personally aim to get the Pfizer vaccine which is probably the best COVID vaccine out there.

I hope we get supply from US/Europe because Chinese's vaccine efficacy is not that great and their vaccines are not based around mRNA which is what the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine is based around.

Its too expensive for us and as long as the effectiveness is above 50% the vaccine should be good enough.

By us you mean Pakistan? Govt is already buying vaccine to cover only 20 pc of the population. Rest will be left to fend on their own. Private suppliers will procure Pfizer and all.

If Pfizer and Moderna are to be supplied free, for immediate dispatch and in unlimited numbers, then I am sure Pakistan will gladly take from both companies.

yes Indeed. They are buying an initial load to cover 20% which will include the most vulnerable and health workers. They will then procure more for the rest of the populace. You have to understand that is it way more urgent in countries like the UK that have completely messed up their response to the virus. Pakistan is managing and can afford to take its time to make sure we get the right vaccine. The govt has the infrastructure in place for large vaccine drives and can even accomodate the pfizer vaccine if required.
Same in India.

The UK is miles behind when it comes to containing the virus. they have lost complete control hence why they are desperate to get their hands on a vaccine. India and Pakistan havent lost complete control of the infection and have managed better than the UK and europe. yes India's numbers are high but its population is high too.

Let those who can afford buy it from the open market. Hopefully Indian govt too approves Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

they will be doing it quite soon from what I've read but I suspect will bargain on the price as they will need large amounts. They may also look for manufacturing participation if they are already not doing so.

We are in a position similar to perhaps one of your larger states and thus can bide our time to make sure we get the right number of vaccines at the right price, at the right time.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Thursday announced that China has promised to provide 500,000 doses of a coronavirus vaccine to Pakistan by January 31.

In a video message after a phone call with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, Qureshi said China offered Islamabad to send an airplane and airlift the vaccines.

The minister said he held a detailed conversation with the Chinese foreign minister in which he "discussed Pakistan's requirements", after Prime Minister Imran Khan had directed him to increase interaction with Beijing "considering the sensitivity of the situation".

"I want to give the nation the good news that China has promised to immediately provide 500,000 doses of vaccine to Pakistan by January 31," he said.

"They (China) have said you can send your airplane and immediately airlift this drug," he added, saying the development would "help save many lives" in Pakistan.

In a tweet, Qureshi suggested the doses to be provided to Pakistan will be of the Sinopharm vaccine, which the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) had approved for emergency use in the country earlier this week.

"With encouraging results of Chinese vaccine and our historic relationship, Pakistan has approved emergency use authorisation of SinoPharm [vaccine]. Indeed Pakistan greatly appreciates the 500,000 doses of the vaccine gifted by China," he wrote.

The vaccine was developed by the Beijing Institute of Biological Products, a subsidiary of state-owned conglomerate Sinopharm. The company announced last month that preliminary data from last-stage trials had shown it to be 79.3 per cent effective.

But Qureshi said he informed his Chinese counterpart that Pakistan's requirement for vaccines is "more than this", and that it will need 1.1 million doses in the near future.

"At this, [the Chinese foreign minister] said 'we plan to fulfil this requirement of yours as well by the end of February and the 1.1m doses will be made available to you,'" he revealed in the video message.

China had decided to work for the "global public good" in the context of Covid-19, Qureshi said, adding that Foreign Minister Wang told him the first country they thought of to assist was Pakistan keeping in view "the all-weather strategic relationship" between the two countries.

"We want to assure Pakistan that our cooperation with you will continue," the minister quoted Wang as saying.

Qureshi also said he and Foreign Minister Wang had discussed that trials of Chinese firm CanSino's vaccine in Pakistan were successfully moving forward and their results had been "quite encouraging".

"Pakistan has a huge population [...] in order to fulfil its needs, we also discussed whether we can move forward together for this (CanSino) vaccine's production and manufacturing in Pakistan after the completion of the new trials," he said, adding that his Chinese counterpart had agreed to the proposal.

The minister said the first batch arriving in Pakistan would be "grant assistance" for which the country would not have to pay anything. "This is a hand of goodwill and friendship that China has extended towards us and I am grateful to them," he added.

Pakistan's vaccine plans
Pakistan has so far approved two vaccines for emergency use, the other being the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab.

On Wednesday, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Faisal Sultan had expressed confidence in the government's ability to procure at least 1m doses of coronavirus vaccines by March, saying it ultimately aimed to inoculate 70pc of the country's population against the virus.

In addition to bilateral arrangements, the SAPM said, the country will also receive vaccines through Covax, an international alliance that has pledged free vaccines for 20pc population of around 190 countries, including Pakistan.

An official of the Ministry of National Health Services, requesting not to be named, had earlier told Dawn there was almost no chance of getting the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine as India had already purchased its research and was also manufacturing it. Besides, New Delhi has announced that it will give priority to its own population.

“Our only chance to get the vaccine is through Covax,” the official had said.

Pakistan had already pre-booked 1.1m doses of Sinopharm’s Covid-19 vaccine.

Drap chief executive officer Dr Asim Rauf had told Dawn that the National Institute of Health (NIH) had gotten the Sinopharm vaccine registered in its name. “The approval has been given for emergency use and it will pave the way for bringing the vaccine to Pakistan,” he added.
