The death toll has risen to 49 after the terrorist attack at two mosques in Christchurch today, police have confirmed.

Key points:

There have been two attacks - at the Masjid Al Noor Mosque next to Hagley Park, and at the Linwood Masjid Mosque in the suburb of Linwood.

Forty-nine people have died, police have confirmed. 41 at Deans Ave mosque and seven at the Linwood mosque. One person who had been injured has since died.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with murder and is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow morning.
Three others are in custody, but one of these people is not thought to be connected to shootings. But police warn there could be more offenders.

The PM said those in custody were not on any security watch lists.

Canterbury DHB says 48 patients with gunshot wounds are being treated at Christchurch Hospital.

Police are at a property on Somerville Street in Dunedin, which is linked to the shootings.

PM Jacinda Ardern has described it as a terrorist attack.

People can register missing persons or themselves as alive at this website

The national security threat level has been increased from low to high for the first time in NZ's history.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush said there were two explosive devices attached to a vehicle, one has been deactivated and the other is being worked on.

Mr Bush said weapons have been found near the mosques were the shooting occurred.

An eyewitness described seeing a man wearing a helmet and glasses and a military style jacket opening fire inside one of the mosques with an automatic weapon.

Multiple roads in the city including Blenheim Rd, Moorhouse Ave and Brougham St were closed.

Police have told mosques nationwide to shut their doors until further notice.

The third cricket Test between Bangladesh and NZ - due to start in Christchurch tomorrow - has been cancelled.

Extremely scary, and completely unimaginable in a place like New Zealand. A lot of fear in the Muslim community here right now.

Sad but I'm not completely surprised, New Zealand and Australia attracted a lot of white supremacist migration.

New Zealand is nothing like Australia in terms of racism, it has always been a very welcoming place, and people have always been very open to immigrants. It is extremely shocking for everyone here. White supremacist groups have almost no support here.

I know someone who was outside the mosque when it happened. He's saying that the attacker shot two people in front of him, before running into the mosque. If he was there even 1 min earlier, it could have been him...

Absolutely tragic.

Now I wonder whether the perpetrator will be classed as a terrorist, or mentally deranged.

At a surface level you could say that about any country, I've personally have rarely met a white nationalist despite living in a conservative state in america however it's delusional to act like white supremacists have no presence at all in NZ. In fact I believe there was a study that claimed that australians and new zealanders are over-represented in online white nationalist communities.

They do have a presence, but it's limited to rural areas in the South Island. Christchurch is quite close to those places though ....

Here in Auckland, things are very different, over 50% of the population here are immigrants.

I just saw the video on youtube, it's taken off now. My heart is shivering. it's very scary. It's absolutely terrible and scary.

Mentally deranged, Opioids, antifa, etc.....He will never be called a terrorist

RIP. Just saw the video, absolutely horrifying. He even posted about this earlier on 8chan.

Wrong.....His religion will determine if he is a terrorist or not.....He can have blonde hair and blue eyes but if he belongs to a certain religion he will be deemed a terrorist.

Apparently, there is another shooting at the different mosque, possibly the same shooter. OMG Destroy this guy.

People that watched the video believe 50+ dead, that is a crazy amount of people even by American standards.

They're saying multiple people are probably involved, they have also found a bomb in a crashed car. One person is in custody now.

My parents live 2km away from one of the Mosques. Truly shocked, can't believe something like this would ever happen in NZ. :(

Just saw the video, it was devastating. Shouldn't have watched it, he specifically went into to the womens prayer areas.

Good statement by PM Jacinda Ardern, but unfortunately she didn't label it as "terrorism".

Can you please update the title now that it has been proven that it was terrorist attack?

Worst terrorist attack in New Zealand's history?

Saw this vedio I am shocked and crying ..How can anyone kill worshippers like that

Abdullah719

Can thread title be updated?

"Terror attack at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. At least 27 dead"

Absolutely disgusting terrorist attack. Heartbreaking

Australian PM Scott Morrison has labelled this as a "terrorist attack". So has the Mayor of Christchurch. Hoping that PM Ardern follows suit, she shouldn't be afraid of using the "t word".

Horrible beyond belief.

Where does hatred like that come from?

Oh man.

The video is among the most disturbing things I've watched in my entire life.

40 people have lost their lives.

This is a terrorist attack.

Ardern has called it a terrorist attack, multiple IEDs found.

Bad news! I feel sorry for NZ and the victims :/

But lets see if teams travel to NZ now for cricket.

These people had extremist views and were Australians. They have no place in the world. - Ardern

Defence force transporting more staff to the region.

All agencies responding in the most appropriate way.

DO NOT ASK for link or PUT on this forum any video from the killer

You will be banned for that

You may have chosen us but we utterly rejected you - Jacinda Ardern.

Horrific act of violence. The NZ premier did the right thing by calling it terrorism.

We were chosen because we represent diversity, kindness and compassion.

We are a proud nation of 200 ethnicities and 160 languages.

2 explosives attached to the suspect's vehicles were disarmed.

Well said by Jacinda, and glad that she called it a terrorist attack.
She's handled her first crisis extremely well. Proud of how the police, armed forces and prime minister have handled this tragedy. It could have been far worse but they've done their best and responded as well as you can in such a situation.

They did a great job, considering they have never experienced anything like this before.

I guess i should have heed the warning on FB page and not see it.

Now i regret that decision & i feel so disturbed by this. May god bless the innocent people in jannah. They did not even see it coming.

St Patrick's weekend cancelled in Auckland.

No lights up tonight for the sky tower in respect to those who lost their lives today.

In the US, whenever there is a shooting, the easy access to weapons is always cited as one of the main reasons.

Does New zealand also have the same laws like the US where it is easy for civilians to buy weapons?

The gun used in the attacks isn't legal in NZ.

Apparently it's the same one used in all the school attacks in the states (AR 15 IIRC).

What we know so far

Forty people been killed and 20 injured in a terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, which occurred during afternoon prayers.

Three people – one of them an Australian-born man – are in custody.

It was described as “a terrorist attack” by NZ prime minister Jacinda Ardern, and an “extremist, right-wing violent terrorist [attack]” by Australian prime minister Scott Morrison.

Christchurch remains on lockdown.

Ardern said: “Many directly affected by this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand, they may even be refugees here...They are us. The person who has perpetuated this violence against us is not.”

The attacker is believed to have livestreamed at least one of the attacks. Police urged people not to share the “distressing” footage, which many Australian news outlets ignored.

Iam so upset by this. My mind cannot process why someone would attack innocent people who were in a place of worship.

It is always better to wait for official statements before playing the inevitable "if he was a Muslim he would have been called a terrorist" victim card. Several media outlets across the globe have also called it what it is - a terrorist attack.

However, sadly, it appears that for some of us, it is simply a reflex and we cannot help ourselves before jumping the gun and jumping to conclusions.

So many criteria to fulfill before calling a non-muslim a terrorist. It isnt the case when muslim is behind such attacks.

This is New Zealand. One of the safest countries in the world with very little threat of terrorism. It is understandable that they were reluctant to call it an act of terror before the findings. Nevertheless, the PM made very impressive statements and was crystal clear in her condemnation and her support for the migrants and the refugees. It is amazing that we have still found a way to criticise her.
