Christchurch mosque attack: Brenton Tarrant given life term without parole

My question to all ppers outside, is the situation that bad, I mean if the hatred has reached such a level then sooner or later situation is going to worsen don't think of this as one off attack

Hatred is nowhere near this level in New Zealand, and this attack has shocked everyone here. The attacker was not even a local, he was visiting from Australia.

It is always better to wait for official statements before playing the inevitable "if he was a Muslim he would have been called a terrorist" victim card. Several media outlets across the globe have also called it what it is - a terrorist attack.

However, sadly, it appears that for some of us, it is simply a reflex and we cannot help ourselves before jumping the gun and jumping to conclusions.

She made an amazing statement, thoroughly impressed by Jacinda, and have no regrets that I voted for her. On a day where migrant communities are extremely distressed and questioning whether or not we belong here, she has made it crystal clear that we are New Zealanders, and the terrorist is not.

When I think about New Zealand; only peace and tranquility comes to mind.

Totally heartbroken....feel the same as I did after 7/7 (was in England then)
Guess the fact the shooter was Australian is unnerving but the media and politicians have been scapegoating Muslims and migrants in general and making alt right behaviour acceptable.

May Allah give all those who have lost loved ones the strength to carry on

I am not directing my criticism towards her in particular but more towards the media who report things differently when muslims are involved. I am not going to turn a blind eye towards the obvious different approaches in reporting just to stay politically correct. If you have followed reporting (and even some official statements) of different terrorist attacks over the years, you would understand what i am pointing towards.

She also says that the attackers were not citizens of her own country which is WRONG.

I understand where you are coming from, but my point is that it is always better to wait for official statements before making sweeping statements. I am not talking about you here, but the three posters that I quoted before you.

When it comes to independent sources and general public, they will say what they want to say and will confirm to their biases. Yes there are plenty of people who are reluctant to use the word 'terrorist' when a non-Muslim is the perpetrator, just like there are people who always find a way to apologise for terrorism.

However, it seems that whenever a non-Muslim carries out an attack, a group of people will immediately rehash the "if it was a Muslim he would be called a terrorist" statement without waiting for official statement(s). If the NZ govt. and media had failed to call it an act of terror, they would have been justified to make these comments.

In times like these, it is best to show a bit of patience and restraint before taking sides.

Tbf the NZ media were basically describing a terrorist attack and using terms which would indicate one. They never directly called it that but alluded to it. Now that Jacinda has called it a terrorist attack, the local media will run with it.

To be honest, I’m a bit repulsed by some posters who seem more concerned with the classification of this attack as a terrorist attack (which btw it clearly is, and is being acknowledged as such!) than the actual attack, and the victims themselves.

Doesn't really matter what NZ government calls it. It is an act of terror plain and simple. What makes is worse is that it is carried out by a person who is living a reasonably comfortable life.

As opposed to a "Muslim" mujaheddin, who is born in a war zone, is desensitised to violence and death at a young age, has no education, gets brain-washed and ends up believing he is fighting against oppressors!

No act of terror has any mitigating circumstances, however if one was to argue then your would find many for a "Muslim" mujaheddin as opposed to a "Christian" terrorist.

Unfortunately James, the West only gets to hear about attacks which happen in the Western or "civilised" society. Most of us have our roots in the "uncivilised" Muslim world where death by way of violence is a daily occurrence. Anyone who says they have not become desensitised towards it is clearly not being honest.
 
The man was an Australian citizen I believe...which begs the question, will he be branded the same way as migrants from other nations who commit such crimes are branded?
 
Gunman who opened fire on Christchurch mosque addresses attack in manifesto

A gunman who livestreamed himself opening fire at the Al Noor mosque in Christchurch and posted a manifesto online addressing his reasons for the attack has been charged with murder.

Forty-nine people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at two mosques in the New Zealand city.

Police have taken three people into custody after the gunman shot at worshippers as they gathered for Friday prayers.

Armed police were deployed around the Al Noor mosque on Deans Ave, where shooting broke out at 1.40pm (NZ time) on Friday, with the city’s schools and hospital locked down. A short time later, shots were fired at another mosque in Linwood Avenue.

Forty-one people were shot dead at the Deans Ave mosque, seven were killed at the Linwood Ave attack, and one person shot in the second mosque attack died in hospital.

The man, who identified himself on Twitter as “Brenton Tarrant” from Australia, livestreamed his deadly rampage and turned the camera on himself before carrying out the attack.

In a vile 73-page manifesto posted online, he described himself as “just a regular White man”.

The 28-year-old noted he was born “to a working class, low-income family … who decided to take a stand to ensure a future for my people”.

He will appear in court tomorrow morning charged with murder.

The gunman — whose background NSW counter-terrorism police are now investigating after the revelation that he is from Grafton — said he carried out the attack to “directly reduce immigration rates to European lands”.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed an individual taken into custody is an Australian-born citizen. He called him “an extremist, right-wing, violent terrorist”.

Sky News heard that the town of Grafton is in shock, trying to come to terms with how a “polite, well-mannered young man” came to find himself on a path that led to Christchurch.

He was a student at the local high school and went on to work at a gym, where his former boss said he regularly volunteered his time to train kids for free.

In April 2010, his father died suddenly of cancer aged 49, leading Tarrant to set off on a seven-year trip around the world.

It was at some time during this journey that former friends now speculate he was “perhaps radicalised”.

Family members who remain in the Grafton area are in shock and trying to come to terms with his acts, and are assisting police with their investigations, Sky News said.

The header photo on Tarrant’s Twitter account shows a victim of the 2016 Bastille Day terror attack in Nice.

The famous photo by Reuters photographer Eric Gaillard came to symbolise the Bastille Day massacre when 84 people were killed by a truck ploughing into holidaying crowds, Reuters says.

He described his reasons for the disgusting attack as to “show the invaders that our lands will never be their lands, our homelands are our own and that, as long as a white man still lives, they will NEVER conquer our lands and they will never replace our people”.

Tarrant revealed he had been planning an attack for up to two years, noting he decided on Christchurch three months ago.

He said New Zealand was not the “original choice for attack”, but described it as “target rich of an environment as anywhere else in the West”.

“An attack in New Zealand would bring to attention the truth of the assault on our civilisation, that no where (sic) in the world was safe, the invaders were in all of our lands, even in the remotest areas of the world and that there was no where (sic) left to go that was safe and free from mass immigration.”

Claiming to represent “millions of European and other ethno-nationalist peoples”, he said “we must ensure the existence of our people, and a future for white children”.

The gunman described the attack as an act of “revenge on the invaders for the hundreds of thousands of death caused by foreign invaders in European lands throughout history … for the enslavement of millions of Europeans taken from their lands by the Islamic slavers … (and) for the thousands of European lives lost to terror attacks throughout European lands.”

He also said it was to take revenge for Ebba Akerlund, the 11-year-old child who was killed in a 2017 terror attack in Stockholm.

Further down in the manifesto, Tarrant described the Stockholm attack as the “first event” that inspired him to commit the attack, particularly the death of the 11-year-old girl.

“Ebba (sic) death at the hands of the invaders, the indignity of her violent demise and my inability to stop it broke through my own jaded cynicism like a sledgehammer. I could no longer ignore the attacks.”

He said the attack was also inspired by a trip he took to France in 2017.

“For many years I had been hearing and reading of the invasion of France by non-whites, many of these rumours and stories I believed to be exaggerations, created to push a political narrative.

“But once I arrived in France, I found the stories not only be true, but profoundly understated. In every French city, in every French town the invaders were there.”

Earlier in the manifesto, Tarrant described his childhood as “regular” and “without any great issues”, noting he had little interest in his education and “barely achieved a passing grade” at school. He said he earned money investing in Bitconnect, an open-source cryptocurrency.

Tarrant said he feels no remorse for the attack. “I only wish I could have killed more invaders, and more traitors as well.” He also said there “was a racial component to the attack” and described it as “anti-immigration” and “an attack in the name of diversity”.

He also said he will plead not guilty if he survives and goes to trial.

Posting on an 8chan forum, a user who identified himself as Tarrant announced he would carry out the attack.

“I will carry out and attack against the invaders, and will even live stream the attack via facebook,” he wrote, with a link to his Facebook page. “If I don’t survive the attack, goodbye, godbless and I will see you all in Valhalla!”

Many anonymous users responded praising him for the attack, with comments like “Godspeed” and “that video is so goddamn good”.

In the days leading up to the attack, Tarrant posted photos to his now-suspended Twitter account of what appears to be guns, ammunition and a military-style vest.

The weaponry is scrawled with references to ancient battles and more recent attacks against Muslims.

In one image he writes “For Rotherham, Alexandre Bissonnette, Luca Traini”.

Bissonnette was sentenced to 40 years for shooting six people dead in the 2017 shooting at a mosque in Quebec.

Traini, an Italian man, is serving 12 years in prison for the shooting of six African migrants in a racially motivated attack in October last year.

On what appears to be a gun, the message “Here’s your migration compact!” is written.

The writing also cites military leaders and refers to ancient battles such as the 1189 Siege of Acre and Ottoman Empire battles including the 1863 battle of Vienna and the 1877 battle of Shipka Pass.

The writing names Feliks Kazimierz Potocki, Polish noble and military leader in the late 1600s, Charles Martel, a French military leader from the 700s.

Tarrant also frequently posted links to articles about extremism in Europe, multiculturalism and previous terror attacks.

The gunman livestreamed the shooting to social media, sharing the horrifying video to Facebook.

The distressing footage, viewed by news.com.au and verified by Storyful, shows the gunman walk around the corner and up the path into the Al Noor Mosque. He walks through the front door and opens fire indiscriminately.

The video shows him firing into many rooms with a semiautomatic rifle, leaving bodies strewn on the floor as others run for their lives.

The shooter was active on social media in the days leading up to the attack, posting a photo of the rifle he used two days before the attack.

He also posted photos of the military gear he wore in the attack and the magazines he used to mow down the innocent people.

Police described it as an “evolving situation” and implored residents to stay indoors. All Christchurch schools have been locked down.

It’s understood about 300 people were inside the Hagley Park mosque for afternoon prayers when one of the shootings happened.

New Zealand Police urged anyone in Christchurch to stay indoors and report any suspicious behaviour.

I demand that the Shooter gets the worst form of punishment possible. The last thing i will want is for him to live a comfortable life in prison.

Reminds me of 26/11 in Mumbai but that was on much greater scale and that was sickness to the whole new level, where they even wanted to target patients.

Post-Charlottesville when the leader of the free world described white supremacists wearing hoods as "very fine people" - the racists have been emboldened everywhere.

It's time for authorities to crack down on hate sites like 4 Chan and Breitbart, and extremist YouTube channels.

While I still maintain that white supremacy has very little support in New Zealand, I am very surprised that security agencies weren't more cautious against such people, especially after Donald Trump became POTUS. Ever since he won the election, I have seen more white supremacist groups emerging in New Zealand. There was even a "European pride club" at the University of Auckland, which did get some amount of support on campus (though it did not get approved by the clubs association).

Surely these things should have set alarm bells ringing? Or were the agencies too busy finding threats within the Muslim community?
 
High profile political pundits like Sam Harris and Douglas Murray have made statements like "we need to make life harder for Muslims" and that the west is at war with Islam, so why are we surprised when such rhetoric morphs into anti-Muslim violence ?

And we'll have so called liberals like Bill Maher who'll rush to defend their "free speech" rights.
 
OMG what a terrible tragic day!!! I've been to NZ and it's considered one of the safest places on earth. This is just unbelievable. I'm glad the BD players are safe.

When you have Islamophobia at every segment of the society now from newspapers to media openly talking rubbish about Muslims, when you newspapers having no problem mentioning 'Muslim' in every rubbish headline from theft to getting a ticket this is what you get where sick, racist scumbags are radicalized.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the incident as a terrorist attack and one of New Zealand's "darkest days".

A man in his late twenties was charged with murder and will appear in court on Saturday morning, police confirmed.

Two other men and one woman were detained nearby and firearms seized, Police Commissioner Mike Bush said.

He said one of those detained was later released, while officers were working to understand if the other two were connected.

Police also found multiple explosive devices in a car belonging to one of the suspects.

The attack, which came around the time people were attending the mosques for Friday prayers, was the deadliest in the nation's history.

It's just ridiculous that white supremacists weren't on their radar, especially ever since Trump became president. I've seen a whole lot of "white pride" groups popping up in New Zealand, such as the "New Zealand National Front" and the "Auckland University European Students Association".

The Aussie senators tweets constitutes aiding and abetting terrorism. In US Muslims have been jailed for 20 years just for copying OBL's speech on their website.

Mainstream media in Australia where the terrorist is from is calling it a terrorist attack, the NZ PM has called it that too so who are you waiting on to verify if was indeed a terror attack or not?

Dozens of people were killed Friday in shootings at two mosques in the city of Christchurch.

One of the shooters appears to have livestreamed the attack on Facebook (FB). The disturbing video, which has not been verified by CNN, purportedly shows a gunman walking into a mosque and opening fire.

"New Zealand Police alerted us to a video on Facebook shortly after the livestream commenced and we quickly removed both the shooter's Facebook and Instagram accounts and the video," Mia Garlick, Facebook's director of policy for Australia and New Zealand, said in a statement.

Facebook is "removing any praise or support for the crime and the shooter or shooters as soon as we're aware," Garlick said.

Twitter (TWTR) said it suspended an account related to the shooting and is working to remove the video from its platform.
YouTube, which is owned by Google (GOOGL), removes "shocking, violent and graphic content" as soon as it is made aware of it, according to a Google spokesperson.

New Zealand police asked social media users to stop sharing the purported shooting footage and said they were seeking to have it taken down.

CNN is choosing not to publish additional information regarding the video until more details are available.

Tech firms 'don't see this as a priority'

This is the latest case of social media companies being caught off guard by killers posting videos of their crimes, and other users then sharing the disturbing footage. It has happened in the United States, Thailand, Denmark and other countries.

Friday's video reignites questions about how social media platforms handle offensive content: Are the companies doing enough to try to catch this type of content? How quickly should they be expected to remove it?

"While Google, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter all say that they're cooperating and acting in the best interest of citizens to remove this content, they're actually not because they're allowing these videos to reappear all the time," said Lucinda Creighton, a senior adviser at the Counter Extremism Project, an international policy organization.

Facebook's artificial intelligence tools and human moderators were apparently unable to detect the livestream of the shooting. The company says it was alerted to it by New Zealand police.

"The tech companies basically don't see this as a priority, they wring their hands, they say this is terrible," Creighton said. "But what they're not doing is preventing this from reappearing."

John Battersby, a counter-terrorism expert at Massey University of New Zealand, said the country had been spared mass terrorist attacks, partly because of its isolation. Social media had changed that.

"This fellow live streamed the shooting and his supporters have cheered him on, and most of them are not in New Zealand," he said. "Unfortunately once it's out there and it's downloaded, it can still be (online)," he added.

The spread of the video could inspire copycats, said CNN legal enforcement analyst Steve Moore, a retired supervisory special agent for the FBI.

"What I would tell the public is this: Do you want to help terrorists? Because if you do, sharing this video is exactly how you do it," Moore said.

"Do not share the video or you are part of this," he added.

Yeah the western media will try its best to disassociate with this guy, funny a random picture is being shared from his time in Pakistan and it isn't even clear if the pic is from Pakistan or not, however, picture from no where else is being shared. Apparently he travelled the world for 7 years after his father's death but only took one pic and that too in Pakistan.

While the severity of tragedy is not lessened by labels, the labels are needed to form a narrative/counter narrative. Therefore the demand for it to be classified as terrorism is a fair one. goose and gander.

That picture is definitely from when he was in Pakistan. It was on his facebook page which has been removed now.

Though visiting Pakistan has nothing to do with this.
 
I watched the video of the shooting because unfortunately it is being spread like wildfire on WhatsApp.

It’s one of the most horrific things I have seen, it took me some time to get over it. Guys urge everyone not to spread it - it can scarr people especially if children watch it.

A really sad day especially for New Zealand as that would be the last country you would envisage this happening.

RIP to the victims.

This is disgusting.
Such hatred for a whole population in the hearts of people occupying authoritative positions is incredibly disheartening.No wonder the common man is an islamophobic if this is the stance of the politicians.

Earlier this week I was at my old school to give a speech to prospective university students on career advice and during the visit I was talking to a teacher who brought up Prevent duty. This encompasses a training course for all teachers (and other govt employees), so they are competent in identifying and reporting radicalised individuals. Much to his surprise he learned that white supremacists were a far greater problem than the so called "Islamists".

Also kudos to Virat Kohli for not only avoiding the war mongering tone like we have seen with some of the current/ex-Indian cricketers (Gambhir, Chahal, Tendulkar, Sehwag and several others) but more pertinently condemning the attacks and expressing condolences imminently after the attack. Not only is
he a remarkable cricketer but a good human.

It's time for the west to acknowledge that the white supremacist ideology is the biggest plague in their society as evident from today's events, prime motivations for voting on Brexit and the numerous mass shootings in America.
 
Why are peole obsessed with what this attack is termed by the media and politicians? Who cares if they refer to this as a terrorist attack or not. Why give these people so much importance.
 
Based on the accounts of people who have seen the video a brave man run towards the shooter and tried to tackle him before the gunman regained control and shot him. What I want to know is how come no one else in the mosque tried to assist that brave soul.

I agree with you.

Over the years the narrative "Not all Muslims are terrorists but all terrorists are Muslims" is being spread. Muslims as a whole community are being made to feel guilty and responsible for actions of a few extremist. Be it directly or indirectly. This narrative then goes on to create an environment where people don't trust each other and hateful sentiments thrive and give birth to the events of today. Especially right-wing extremists make full use of this narrative and a general perception to spread thier propaganda.

The narrative is factually worng and needs to exposed. In this regard the media has to play an unbiased role.

I personally don't believe in the word "terrorist" anyway. A "murderer" and a "killer" is a bad enough word. The word "terrorist" to me is a useless description and it's sole purpose is to be used for the self-interests of politicians and military heads.

I was unfortunate enough to watch the video. The guy who tried to tackle was gunned down as he got close. Also the shooter had already shot a few in the corner of the room.

It matters.

You might feel like people in the media arent of any importance nor do they deserve your attention but things work differenly on the subconscious level. Whether you want it or not it will have an effect subtly. Over the years through its reporting the media has successfully managed to sell a narrative to the general public "not all Muslims are terrorists but all terrorists are Muslims". This narrative in-turn is the breeding ground for all things related to hate and violence against Muslims residing in western countries.

Allegedly hundreds were cheering the gunman on...this sickness is very very deep now..we fought the TTP and ISIS. when are the white non muslim community going to fight their extremists??

My prayers to the victims, and families that are suffering. Truly sad when NZ is telling people not to go to mosques because another attack could happen and people are not safe to worship.

The great liberal and left wing hope Obama had during his time in office reduced the FBI staff investigating homegrown right wing terrorism from 30 odd to just one solitary agent. Such is the will among the western governments in dealing with this scourge and they are ably being supported by their left/liberal counterparts in the perpetuation and white washing of right wing extremist threat. All media in the West both left and right leaning are refusing to call this attack terrorism, still referring to it as mass shooting and the perpetrator as gunmen.

I am saying that he is a terrorist!! What annoyed me was the posters early in the thread more bothered about whether he was being called a terrorist or a shooter than actually expressing sadness about the victims!

This is a tragic and horrific terrorist incident. Your post implying that I am in some way responsible for this attack is darn disgusting, and if you don’t reevaluate and retract then we’re going to fall out here.
