As cricket fans we all love a bit of scandal and controversy - it adds to the excitement of the game! Otherwise Cricket tends to be a bit of a boring sphere when its a gentlemen's game!

Scandals/Controversies I can think of, off the top of my head:

1992 - The Dawn of Reverse Swing
1999 - Match fixing witch hunt (India/Pakistan/SA)
2010 - Spot Fixing Pakistani Trio
2018 - Sandpapergate

I confess, I am glued to Twitter and Broadsheets of late!

Any other scandals/controversies in Cricket which deserve a mention/you can think of?

The infamous 2008 Border-Gavasker Series. Now, that was a good laugh.

Also, Inzi chasing that spectator with a bat.

The Greg Chappell saga - if you were an Indian cricket fan. Although results were successful on the field throughout the 2000s, the way that unraveled was a joke.

KP sacking in 2014. #SMSgate!

#SMSGate was in 2012, during the South African tour of England. KP's sacking was because of an insecure Flower who wanted him gone even if he was going to lose the job himself.

More than cricket fans, I think as Pakistani fans we are used to a consistent dose of controversies and a lack of such in the recent time had caused a certain tension and uneasiness which has now be released. Since it didn't involve the Pakistani team this team around, we all feel all too happy about it and can enjoy it for a change.

I do not "love" any controversy that damages the game and brings it into the media spotlight for negative reasons. Yes there are a few fun things along the way, some things that don't need to be taken too seriously (Freddie's pedalo incident for example) but when the laws of the game are flaunted, when cheats appear at the highest level, it is no longer a joke.

Smith, Warner and anyone else involved have damaged Australia's reputation for years and it will take a Misbah like figure to fix it. This is not fun for the game, or me as a fan, when one of the premier sides is now labelled cheats...for years to come.

Generally, these scandals or big controversies quickly become the talk of the town and this is why in almost every single forum, we can see all the talks going around is of the ongoing ball tampering controversy only.

Ofcourse, controversy always adds more spice to a series and then some of them become the one that would be remembered for long time. The ongoing series between Aus and SA had it all- sledging, send-offs, ball-tampering controversy and some intense & fascinating cricket in between that.
