Compression Damage

Was in Taunton last week so popped into M&H to pick up a few bits for my son. Whilst there I spotted a bargain bin containing all sorts of bats including Amplus and Distinctions at less than half price.

On the face of it the bats looked lovely so I asked Graham why they were so cheap and he said they had compression damage during the pressing process. Upon closer inspection very faint marks could be seen going horizontally over the blade. Initially I just thought they were faint wood blemishes but apparently it is the fibres being over stretched.

I was looking to buy an Amplus but Graham recommended I didn't as he said it may be the best bat you'll ever use or it may break in half the very first time you use it. They are generally sold to people who just need a reserve bat in case their main bat breaks.

I thought it was due to pressing where they might have "over pressed" the bats ? :S

Considering the longetivity of the bat and the price isn't the price too high ?

It occurs during the pressing process so it maybe over pressing but it may be due to the cleft being weak prior to the pressing.

Amplus for £150 is not too bad a price I suppose if you get lucky and the bat lasts a season or two.

Aamer, did the seller confirm whether it was overcompression (that would make it a real hard bat and it would take forever to get ping) or was it that the wood was too soft/brittle and got opened while compression?

If the wood is already opened no one should sell those bats- especially for so much. These bats can break anytime.

My advice - Dont buy.

take some pics for the forum if you can. never seen anything like that.

£150's quite a bit of coin for a gamble with a bit of wood, t'was wise of you not to try it.

150 Bones for a bat that might break 1st shot you play.

Bit of a gamble surely it should be 70% off then mayb it would be worth it.

exactly right.

Trouble is most ppl would pick it and still prefer it over a lesser known subcontinent bat.

for 150 pounds you can get an awesome bat (made in Pak/India)

Sorry couldn't take any pics but the stretch marks were so feint the camera probably wouldn't have picked them up. They never said it was due to over compression they just said it was compression damage.

Yaar for 150 Pounds you can get cracking bats in England as well!

But it would have been gamble, who knows it would break when you play your first shot as sully said.

Certainly not worth the gamble.

This thread was solely about making people aware that some bats, although basically looking fine, can be seriously flawed. There is not much information on the net about compression damaged cricket bats so I was unaware that these existed before my visit.

I actually appreciate your efforts in making this thread :)

I think apart from M&H few of Salix bats which I have seen in Rogue bin have similar issues.

Aamer bhai does M&H still sell there retro distinction model that came out in the 1990's? Owzat seems to sell this on their website. Apparently they get it made from the factory and have the retro stickers applied etc. i personally love the shape, not a big fan of the newer distinction shape though.

M&H sell a retro original. I haven't seen a retro Distinction. They sell the retro stickers also for about £15.

Ahh ok so there is a difference - any idea about the price point for the original grade 1?
