Did Harshit Rana's concussion substitute debut exploit the rules in the 4th T20I against England?

They should remove this concussion sub rule. If a player is injured, then he is injured. It's part of the game.

The team should use a sub for fielding who can neither bat or bowl

It was unfair. That's the truth. But this happened in a random t20i game instead of an ICC tournament knockout game. That's the silver lining.

This rule needs to be fixed. Concussion substitutes are a good thing. But maybe put some guardrails? Like concussion sub can bowl only 2 overs. Or cannot bat in the top 5. Not ideal solutions, maybe there are better options. But we can't have a scenario where a batting allrounder is replaced with a pure bowler. Rana was the 3rd seamer in the BGT test series. He is not a like for like for Dube

Shadab has mostly bowled his bowling quota and is a proper bowler.
Meanwhile dube has bowled less than 10 overs in last 10 12 games.

This is what the talk is about. Dube plays as a batsman majorly.

If it was pandya u could replace him with harshit.

If india was bowling first and dube got injured would they bring in ramandeep or harshit?

See here it is they can bring any batter in this case because dube is a batsman majorly and in remaining match he was supposed to bat

This is what all the cry is about and idt its an anamoly because all teams will look to exploit it one way or another unless rules are defined in a better way.

Desperate times desperate measures
Wel said... Dube is not used as a bowler too much and has been playing as proper batter in the team. That is the main point... Shadab and Usama are like-for-like guys. both cannot bowl and both cannot bat. Same same.

But Dube is a proper batter while Harshit is a bowler...

The rule is fine, it just needs the match referee to follow it rather than ignore it.

Then they don't get a concussion replacement, it's pretty simple.

I have no issue with that if it is explicitly written in the rule book. However, it will be diffcult to prove like for like replacements and teams will always find loopholes. India could have easily convinced MR that they were intending to bowl Dube in 2nd innings and now that he is out Rana's medium pace is like for like replacement. So I think this rule need to be completely scrapped or else teams will continue to find loopholes in it.

Effectively confirms he didn't actually suffer a concussion which doesn't exactly help the situation.

Concussion sub row: ICC match referee Chris Broad sees 'bias and corruption'

The England team management has said that it has moved on from the concussion controversy but the issue is not exactly dying. Sunil Gavaskar and a few prominent English voices have weighed in on the matter. One of the Englishmen was actually quite scathing in his criticism, alleging bias and corruption.

"Independent match officials were brought in to stop situations like this! Why are the ICC returning to the 'bad old days' of bias and corruption?," Chris Broad, a former England opener, more famously one of the decorated International Cricket Council (ICC) match referees, said on X (formerly Twitter).

In another social media post, which has now been deleted, he had said that the ICC should allow only neutral match referees. Ironically enough, as recently as last May, he was the match referee for a couple of T20 games between England and Pakistan. More specifically, he oversaw the games at the Oval and Edgbaston in May 2024. Asked to comment on the posts, he told Cricbuzz, "I have nothing more to say."

Harshit Rana suddenly became some kind of world class T20 bowler on his debut lol. In T20 anyone can be as good as another unless you are someone like Malinga, Bumrah.

Whether he was on debut or not is irrelevant. His role with the ball was as a frontline pace bowler, Dube's is not.

There is no such thing as frontline, backline pacer unless you are excpetional like Bumrah. Pandya doesn't always bowl full quota. on an average he bowls 2.5 overs. If there is no substitue available go with the next best option. Rana has a first class 100 and averges 34 in first class

Gautam Gambhir responded to the controversy surrounding Harshit Rana replacing Shivam Dube as a concussion substitute in the fourth T20I. After the fifth T20I, he gave a hilarious reply to England cricketer-turned-commentator Kevin Pietersen:

"He (Dube) would have bowled four overs for sure today."

Dube told the reporters after India's 4-1 series win:

"It feels great when you contribute as an all-rounder for the team. I have been doing that since a long time, so I was really excited, I knew I was going to bowl. I gave the team what they wanted. The wicket was amazing for batting, but I enjoyed both (batting and bowling.) The wicket was good, so I tried to play my shots and went hard against their bowlers. I am working with our new coach - Morne Morkel, I am working on all the angles and that helped my today."
