Controversy erupts after no PCB presence at the prize awarding ceremony for Champions Trophy 2025

Was PCB justified in not sending a senior representative to the CT2025 final?

People who are head of group should be pragmatic and not ideological driven unless you are a superpower. Naqvi should have attended
Even if you are a superpower you shouldn't behave this way.

Its an unfortunate reality of social media. Too much toxicity & vitriol

Reminds me of what happened in La Liga. Earlier it was customary for teams to give a guard of honor to title winning team in la Liga. In 2008 Barcelona gave a guard of honor to Real Madrid even though they are very bitter rivals

But in the last 10 years the tradition stopped. Real & Barca don't give guard of honor to each other any more. Big reason is the toxicity created by social media. Bcoz once upon a time the guard of honor was seen as noble gesture. Now if u do it - especially to ur biggest rival - u wud get trolled mercilessly on social media

Its the same with India & Pakistan. The toxicity has gone off the roof. Especially after that 2021 T20 WC game
It is sad that decency and sportsmanship is something that can be trolled now.

Icc gave a statement that they only invite the Chairman, Ceo or the head.

So that means pakistan was at fault.

Btw the other members that stood on the podium what was their position?

Man this is soo sad. You look at 1996 and than you look at this.

It would had been iconic if pakistan officials were. Even if it meant the president or PM

I wouldnt be surprise if the order came from rawalpindi to not attend

I can understand PCB feeling outmaneuvered and cornered. But there was no reason for them to give up central position and move to the corner. PCB was the host and whether ICC/BCCI wants or not have right to be at the center of the award ceremony. Not sure why Naqvi choose not to come there. There is nothing wrong in handing over the cup as a gracious host. Aaron Finch brought the trophy to hand it over to India. It could have been Sarfraz Ahmad bringing the trophy and Naqvi handing it over. It would have looked gracious. Now PCB and its administrators look sore losers.

So much bad blood between the 2 nations. Totally understand why a Pakistani cabinet minister wont want to be photographed handing over a trophy to a team whose board turned the event into a nightmare for the host nation

So as an Indian I will say no issues. Just forget it & let it go. Not ideal but as a human being totally understandable

At the end of the day cricket is a victim of much larger issues. Unless those issues gets resolved - these optics mean nothing
Gotta respect you for always giving calm, balanced takes.

Some reports are saying Naqvi had ministerial commitments whereas others claim he was unwell makes it obvious PCB didn't want to be part of an Indian photo op.

These petty acts are a symptom of the hatred and bad blood between two nations who sadly I don't see even getting on talking terms in our lifetimes.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to register its protest with the ICC for ignoring its CEO and Champions Trophy tournament director Sumair Ahmed Syed during the event's closing ceremony in Dubai. A source in the PCB said on Monday that chairman Mohsin Naqvi was not satisfied with the explanation given by the ICC for not having Ahmed on stage at the presentation ceremony on Sunday. "The ICC, apparently, has said it had prepared for Mohsin Naqvi to be on stage so when he didn't show up for the final, they changed their plan," the source said.

The PCB has rejected this explanation and noted that the ICC had made a number of errors during the tournament regarding Pakistan's status as host nation.

This included changing the CT 2025 logo in the live broadcasts feed of the India versus Bangladesh game and then playing the Indian national anthem in the Australia versus England match in Lahore.

PCB was invited, Naqvi opted out at the last moment saying he has a stomach bug it seems. They also did not inform Sumair would be his replacement. Instead of informing ICC who will be Naqvi replacement, they expected ICC to contact them and ask them. By the way, even if they had nominated Sumair as Naqvi's replacement, he wouldn't be on the podium as he is not an elected member. ICC rules are that in the award ceremonies only the elected members like President is allowed to be on the podium. The same reason excluded Andre Russel, coordinator for Dubai leg, to be part of the ceremonies.

There is no other reason than PCB's hubris, incompetence and ego which allowed the ceremony to go on without their presence

Glad that Mohsin didnt attend. No need to be big hearted and graceful to people who tried their level best to sabotage your event. From their common public, to their media making non stop fake news, to their cricket board. The level of pettiness witnessed was on a historic level. They have been barking and creating issues for Pakistan even before the start of the tournament.

Any self respecting professional will see this as a motivation but our cricket team is under occupation of Saya mafia which speaks only one language and that is $$$$

They never sabotaged it. We did.

India reaching the finals was expected. Anyone who thought India would not make the finals was just living in a fools paradise.

Alot of people celebrated the deal of india playing 3 games in Dubai, as if PCB won the deal. But i called it than that this was a terrible deal as India would decide the fate of the tournament and that is exactly what happened.

Pcb should had stick to its grounds, and the issue would had gone to Court of Arbitrition that would had decided in our favor.

ICC acted like idiots, but PCB were the biggest idiots for caving in.

PCB is ran by pakistani people and pakistani people have a very narrow mind about the law due to lack of education.

i don't think there is any issue from Indian side. All questions, whining and complaints are from PCB side. If they wanted to skip the ceremony that perfectly fine and understandable. But why act like a victim afterwards?

They did try their best to sabotage it as much as possible. And even when the tournament was going on, they were making non stop fake news and were up to their dirty petty tricks.

PCB did what it could do best unless the tournament would have gotten suspended indefinitely. I also was in favour of not holding it all but i do see the rationale.

But saying its somehow PCB’s fault is some clown stuff.

If its anyone’s fault its the horrible cricket team players who have zero self respect who i would never select again if i was playing pcb chairman.

That was a honour for PCB to award prizes and trophy to the winner as a Host, but they failed to avail the opportunity.

PCB proved that they are a kid in front of BCCI

Saikia is a BCCI secratary and ICC member too. others are BCCI president , ICC chairman and New Zealand Cricket director Roger Twose

There is a logical way of how things work.

You sign agreements and documents. These are done so that tomr if you are challenged in court, you have documentational proof.
Fake news, petty tricks dont hold up in court or arbitration.

The ball was in PCB's hand, and any attempt by ICC to shift the hosting rights to anyone without PCB's agreement was a lawsuit. It was PCB that agreed.

PCB did not do what it could do best. It caved, because PCB does not understand how they could had pursued this legally. Even if ICC took away hosting rights completely, and let Arbitration decide after a couple of months, ICC would have owed them more money.

Cricket performance and PCBs administration issues are two seperate things.

So why didn't the PCB know of these rules and regulations?

My guess (I have no evidence) is that it is a sign of highly dysfunctional organisation where no one wants to shoulder responsibility, only take credit.

Initially the PCB did not want the discomfort of being up on stage for an Indian win. So they didn’t send anyone at the time.

But later when it became controversial and Pakistanis themselves started to ask questions, PCB is blaming everyone else but themselves.

I still remember that you were advising to approach Court of Arbitration and few PP rs are rejecting for that saying it will not come under the purview of Court of Arbitration etc. Anyway, PCB was focusing more on conducting CT2025 that time and neglected the consequences of such Hybrid model. This was really a surprise to many of us. We didn't expect that PCB will allow for such model seeing their stubbornness initially to relocate the entire tournament to other location or even for hybrid model. FINALLY, PCB caved in. Now if some one criticize that IND is having the advantage of playing in one location and PCB member was not invited on Podium etc., it is of no use and childish. This arrangement was agreed by other boards along with PCB and now they can't say about the advantage of IND playing in same ground through out the tournament etc. They should have suggested Sharjah and other grounds in UAE (Sk. Zayed Cricket Ground, Abu Dhabi, Ajman Stadium etc.) for this Hybrid model and I don't know why other boards also didn't pay attention to that. Strange and it is not the mistake of BCCI or IND team.

Choose your friends wisely but choose your enemies even more wisely. I have been watching cricket for more than 2 decades now and i have never seen BCCI so determined to punish PCB. In the 90s and 2000s i believe BCCI went out of their way on many occasions to collaborate with PCB. But after 26/11 things have not deteriorated and have been getting worse only and on this occasion i truly believe we also crossed a few lines to show extreme pettiness and it’s been evident every action of BCCI has been aimed at hurting and humiliating PCB. Pakistan’s economic situation coupled with PCB’s incompetence has been exploited to the depths by BCCI. They know all of PCB’s weak points, they know everything PCB can do and everything PCB wouldn’t do and remain a couple of steps ahead of them at every move.

In all of this, PCB holds only one trump card and that is that no politics, pettiness works if your team itself is good enough to defeat Bharat on the ground and lift the trophy. Whenever this trump card works, PCB is able to hide everything else and put cold water on BCCI’s bad intentions for them. Law of averages will work out eventually and there will be instances BCCI will be made to look sore losers too when Pakistan team wins. I think this should be the biggest inspiration for Pakistan cricket. You cannot compete with BCCI in politics. You can only shut them up by defeating them. Defeat them wherever you see them.

For any issue to be taken to CAS, the agreement must mention that the place of dispute resolution is CAS.

PCB can sue and PCB can lose or win. ICC can always cancel an event citing non viability due to financial reasons.

PCB has reportedly lodged complaint with ICC for not being invited to the finals presentation ceremony.

Agree with the last part. The hate & bad blood is so deep & ingrained in both countries that expecting any kind of normalization is unimaginable in our lifetimes

We are like Biblical enemies. Bot sides will argue whose fault it is - but it is what it is !
It is sad that decency and sportsmanship is something that can be trolled now.
It is one of the unfortunate effects of social media. It has given a tool to vile elements to troll others. In the 80s & 90s it did not matter if u won or lost. Yes if u lost it felt bad - but u did not have to deal with hordes of rival fans trolling & mocking u on social media. Bcoz rival fans celebrated in their own countries / spaces far away from ur country

But now when 1 team loses - the rival fans go for the jugular on social media. It happens right on ur faces. There is no place to hide. The trolling can be brutal. That's what makes for intense toxicity & bitterness

ICC to offer no 'clarification' on Champions Trophy row, bluntly asks PCB 'When has tournament director been on stage?'

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) filed an official complaint with the ICC on Tuesday after controversy erupted when Sumair Ahmed, the PCB's chief operating officer and the tournament director of the Champions Trophy, was ignored for the trophy presentation ceremony at the end of the final on Sunday. However, the apex body is unlikely to give any 'formal clarification' to PCB.

India beat New Zealand by four wickets in the final in Dubai on Sunday, lifting the Champions Trophy for an unprecedented third time in history. With PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi not present at the venue for the match, Sumair was sent In his stead as a representative of the Pakistani board. However, ICC ignored his presence and did not call him to the stage for the trophy presentation ceremony.

BCCI president Roger Binny presented the white jackets to Indian players and the medals to match officials, while ICC chairman Jay Shah handed the trophy to skipper Rohit Sharma and gave the medals to the winners. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and New Zealand Cricket's CEO Roger Twose were also on stage. It must be mentioned that Saikia is the BCCI Director on the ICC board, and Binny is the Alternate Director.

"We have filed a formal complaint with the ICC as what happened is unacceptable to us," a PCB official told PTI on Tuesday.

ICC responds to PCB

Despite PCB's complaint, the report added ICC sources confirming that Pakistan won't get any formal explanation. The sources reminded that the tournament protocol left ICC with no choice but to snub Sumair from the ceremony.

"If the PCB mandarins look up, even ICC CEO Geoff Allardice wasn't present on stage. The reason is protocol," said the ICC source. "Sumair Ahmed is an employee of the PCB and not an office-bearer. Also please check when has a tournament director been on stage for presentation?

"We can give an example. ICC's new head of operations and communications Gaurav Saxena was once Tournament Director for Asia Cup in Dubai. Was he on stage for final presentation," the source added.

PCB, however, deemed the response "illogical," as they stuck to their demand for a "full public clarification" against the "unjust treatment" from ICC.

"The reasons being given for not having our COO and tournament director on stage for the final presentation make no sense to us. We are waiting for a formal clarification/apology," the PCB official said. "We are appalled by this blatant disregard for Pakistan's role as the host nation."

"Giving explanations that ICC only invites CEOs, chairmen, vice-chairmen or secretaries for the ceremony is illogical. We want a full public clarification and an assurance that such biased and unjust treatment will not happen again or we will push this matter to the Board of governors," he added.

I sincerely hope that PCB escalate this closing ceremony fiasco to the board of Governors only for Jay Shah to brutally shut them down ... whatta badass uff .... maza aagaya ji 🤣 :thumbsup

Lol at the PCB. What is the point now? The tournament has finished and concluded. India mocked Pakistan on 4 counts i.e. forcing the PCB to accept a hybrid model in favour of India, India beating Pakistan on the field and kicking them out of the CT, India playing so well that they qualified for the final and successfully shifted the CT Final from Pakistan to UAE and then winning the CT event hosted by Pakistan.

In these circumstances it was a blessing in disguise no one from the PCB was on stage. In any case what will all this whining and crying achieve now apart from further antagonizing the BCCI, ICC, PCB is not going to get any financial compensation for this mishap?

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal has stirred controversy with his blunt remarks regarding the absence of a representative from host nation Pakistan during the prize distribution ceremony of the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy, he said:

"The ICC showed us the mirror," Akmal said on his YouTube channel. "The tournament's director (Sumair) was there. He was available, and why wasn't he in the ceremony? It is because we don't deserve to be there. We are not playing good cricket. Minow teams have shown us the mirror."

"No one discussed how Pakistan hosted the tournament. If we play such cricket, we will be treated like this. If you play for yourself, there will be no respect."

I honestly feel for genuine and decent Pakistani fans sometimes who have to put up with this kind of a board. You all deserve better i swear for your loyal fan following.

Dont deprive people of free entertainment lol ... no other organization in the world can match PCB on that count.

Infact PCB should be compensated for the entertainment that they provide :ROFLMAO:

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sent a reminder to the International Cricket Council (ICC) seeking a response to its concerns over the exclusion of its representative from the post-match ceremony of the ICC Champions Trophy final

The PCB had earlier lodged a formal protest against the ICC’s failure to include its Chief Operating Officer Sumair Ahmed Syed—who also served as the tournament director—in the presentation ceremony following the final between India and New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Despite Syed’s presence at the venue in his official capacity, he was not included among the dignitaries on stage.

The PCB had termed the incident as a “blatant disregard for Pakistan’s role as the host nation” and formally demanded an explanation and a public apology from the ICC. The board also accused the ICC of violating its own standard operating procedures regarding representation in the closing ceremony.

In an update on the matter, the PCB confirmed that it had sent a reminder to the ICC and was awaiting a response.

“Yes, the PCB had sent a reminder to the ICC to explain the reasons behind not including any host member in the four-member panel and we are awaiting the reply from the ICC,” a PCB spokesman told Dawn on Monday.

The ICC had previously defended its decision, citing protocol that only allows board presidents, vice presidents, chairmen, or CEOs to be on stage. However, the PCB argued that given its organizational structure, the COO held a status equivalent to that of a CEO, which should have warranted Syed’s inclusion in the ceremony. The board also pointed out inconsistencies in ICC’s implementation of protocol, as Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia was included in the panel despite not holding any of the aforementioned roles.

The PCB has also raised concerns over what it perceives as repeated administrative lapses by the ICC during the tournament, including the omission of Pakistan’s name from the Champions Trophy’s official logo on the live feed and the accidental playing of the Indian national anthem ahead of the Australia-England group match at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

“The ICC’s repeated blunders, double standards, and selective governance have cast serious doubts over its credibility,” the PCB had stated earlier. “By sidelining the host nation at its own tournament, the governing body has once again shown a troubling lack of neutrality and fairness.”

The PCB maintains that it expects professionalism, transparency, and equal representation from the ICC and has demanded a public clarification along with assurances that such incidents will not be repeated in the future.

With the matter still unresolved, the PCB now awaits the ICC’s response to its latest correspondence.

Champions Trophy: PCB COO slams ICC over exclusion from closing ceremony

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sumair Ahmad Syed has termed the exclusion of PCB officials from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 closing ceremony as "administrative mismanagement" by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

PCB officials were notably absent from the presentation ceremony, where medals and awards were distributed to the winning and runner-up teams. Instead, ICC Chief Jay Shah and officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) were present on stage.

During a media conference on Saturday at Gaddafi Stadium, Sumair expressed his disappointment over the incident.

"I was at the final of the ICC Champions Trophy as the chairman couldn't attend. We asked the ICC for an explanation, but their response was unsatisfactory. Therefore, we have sought further clarity. At this point, I would call it administrative mismanagement on the ICC’s part—and everyone knows who is behind it," Sumair stated.

Former cricketers, including Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar, voiced their concerns over the absence of PCB representation at the prestigious event.

Akram remarked that it seemed "odd" that no official from the host nation was present on stage.

In response to the growing criticism, the ICC addressed the matter after Geo News sought clarification.

"Mr. Naqvi was unavailable and did not travel to Dubai for the final," an ICC spokesperson confirmed.

"The ICC only invites the head of the host board—such as the president, vice president, chairman, or CEO—to participate in the awards ceremony. Other board officials, even if present at the venue, are not part of the stage proceedings," the spokesperson explained.

On the field, India emerged victorious in the final, successfully chasing a target of 252 runs with six wickets and six balls to spare, thanks to a match-winning half-century from captain Rohit Sharma.

Batting first, New Zealand posted 251 runs, with Daryl Mitchell scoring a resilient half-century.

This victory marked India's third Champions Trophy title, having previously won the tournament in 2002 and 2013.
