Coronavirus in India

Because the Baffoon Boris is going to India soon, wanting them to produce more rubbish vaccines to send to the UK.

The Indian variant has alreadly arrived in the UK.

Boris Johnson's visit to India will still go ahead later this month despite the country's soaring coronavirus cases and a new variant there, No 10 says.

Public Health England says 73 cases of the variant first identified in India have been found in England and four in Scotland.

Officials have called it a "variant under investigation" rather than "of concern".

The PM had already scaled down his trip due to India's rising number of cases.

The country has reported more than 150,000 Covid cases a day for the past three weeks.

Speaking about the prime minister's visit to India, a No 10 spokesman said the trip was already "slightly shorter than it will have been".

Mr Johnson was due to spend four days in the south Asian country but after talks with Narendra Modi's administration, the "bulk" of meetings will take place on one day - Monday, 26 April.

"As you would expect, safety is obviously important and is a priority for us on this trip, which is why we will make sure that all elements of the visit are Covid-secure," the spokesman said.

Public Health England has designated the B.1.617 variant as a "variant under investigation" and said there was currently no evidence to suggest it caused more severe disease or that vaccines were less likely to work against it.

Officials said "all appropriate public health interventions will be undertaken, including enhanced contact tracing" after its detection, with PHE and international partners monitoring the situation "closely".

Viruses mutate all the time in a bid to survive. The challenge for scientists is to work out which mutations change how the coronavirus behaves.

Do they alter how the virus spreads, for example, do they cause people to become more seriously ill, and could they evade the protection of vaccines?

These are all questions experts will now try to answer about the Indian variant by carrying out experiments in the lab and looking at data on cases in the real world.

So far, we know that it has two mutations - the first, E484Q is similar to one found in the Brazilian, South African and Kent variants - and the second, L452R has been found in a variant in California.

That means it could be a concern based on what is known about those variants already.

But the "double mutation" on its own isn't unusual and has been found in other variants.

Covid vaccines are still very effective at reducing the risk of serious illness and manufacturers plan to update their vaccines in response to the most worrying new variants.

Paul Hunter, professor of medicine at the University of East Anglia, said the variant first identified in India featured two "escape mutations" which "are causing people to be concerned".

"If you think about where the main variants have arisen - South Africa, the UK, California, Brazil, and now India - all of these are countries that have really struggled to keep case numbers down," Prof Hunter said.

"So it's not surprising. India has got a huge pandemic, and therefore that's where you're going to be getting the variant."

Coronavirus cases have risen sharply in India in the past few weeks as the country battles a second wave.

There have been more than 13.9 million confirmed coronavirus cases in India and 172,000 people have died.

The country is not on the UK government's "red list" for travel. This refuses entry to people who have been in those countries in the previous 10 days and means a 10-day hotel quarantine for British or Irish nationals, or people with UK residency rights, returning.

Asked why India had not been put on the red list, Downing Street said the situation was "under constant review".

"We add and remove countries based on the latest scientific data and public health advice from a range of world-leading experts," a spokesman said.

Typical poltical answer. UK government knows India is raging with this, the new variant has arrived in the UK but wont do anything , instead putting countries like UAE on the red list.

This government is the worst I've ever seen in my life in the UK.

Hardly something to be happy about.

The political pressure is building now UK has found over 70 cases of the Indian variant.

India will rightly be on the red list, perhaps when Bojo returns but with the tsumani of infections in India, its a matter of time.

India has found over 1100 cases of UK variant which actually has been proved to a super spreading variant. What you call the Indian variant has been previously found in other countries. There is no scientific proof yet of it being more infective or fatal.

Pakistanis like you will keep trying to hurt India, but the UK government seems to ignore you.

I dont care about India at all, wont waste my time loving or hurting.

I live in the UK, Indian variant is real,. Its similar to others but has it's own unique protein spikes.

India has every right to stop Brits entering, no problem for me and most Brits.

Britain is under pressure to place India on red list due to the huge numbers. When you have the Hindu festival where people are in close contact, half naked and believe the Ganges will cure/stop Covid, it's a real problem if those people infect others who travel to the UK. We have only just come out of lockdown, we dont want another.

Are you a spokesman of all Brits? There is huge Indian origin community in UK, wonder if they want a brit pakistani speaking for them.

Let the UK government decide on the red list. Apparently you are not the UK government.

Wake up, this a forum to air ones views. My views have more iimportance than someone living in Calcutta.

I know more Indians in the UK than you could ever know. Most Sikhs and Muslim Indians hate Modi and many Hindus do too. They would also want India on the red list.

Its not hard to understand why , the infection rate is through the roof. Please go help with testing or vaccinations, do something useful for your people.

New variants ‘could scupper our escape plan'

The UK “should be terribly concerned” by the detection of a coronavirus variant first discovered in India, an expert has said.

Danny Altmann, professor of immunology at Imperial College, told BBC Radio 4’s PM: “It is similar to the ones we know about - it mixes and matches some of the features we’ve seen before with this E484 change that we’ve seen before in a similar but different version in South Africa and Brazil, and then the infectivity change that we saw in the Californian variant.

“As we keep saying, it is the infectivity change plus the new evasion. This isn’t a ‘variant of concern’ yet but I suspect it will be.

“I look at all of them and they are things that can most scupper our escape plan at the moment and give us a third wave. They are a worry.”

----------------------

This is terribly irresponsible of Forrest Gumpson but not a surprise, bearing in mind him and his Cabinet's track record through this pandemic.

The blabbering buffoon and his band of intellectual pygmies are damning the UK into a further lockdown. It's utterly infuriating...

New Delhi: In another grim milestone, India logged 2,34,692 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the highest single-day spike since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, pushing the tally to 1,45,26,609.

This is the third consecutive day when one-day spike in coronavirus cases crossed the 2-lakh mark in the country which is hit by the second wave of COVID-19.

The death has increased to 1,75,649 with 1,341 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry.

The total number of cured COVID-19 patients has risen to 1,26,71,220 with 1,23,354 people recovering from the disease in the last 24 hours.

Active cases have mounted to 16,79,740 in the country amid a fresh spike in coronavirus infections.

The alarming surge in coronavirus cases has forced many states to impose several fresh restrictions, including night curfew and weekend lockdown to curb the spread of the disease.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan is scheduled to chair a meet with health ministers of 11 states that have been reporting a surge in COVID-19 cases.

57% of India under curbs as deaths soar on Black Friday

India recorded 1,340 deaths due to Covid-19 in a single day on Friday, setting a new record for daily deaths as the devastating statistics of recent days came into stark focus with a steady stream of bodies pouring into cremation and burial grounds, and people seen lining up in a desperate wait for beds outside hospitals.

The country added 233,869 cases on Friday -- the most it ever has in a single day.

The crisis has forced much of the country to retreat into some form of curbs, which will restrict more than half of India’s population (57%) to their homes as curbs in 15 states and Union territories come into force in the form of for night or weekend curfews.

Prior to Friday, the last time India recorded the most number of deaths in a day was on September 15 when 1,284 people succumbed to the disease. To be sure, on June 16, more than 2,000 deaths were recorded but that was due to Delhi and Maharashtra reconciling pending fatality data in a single day.

According to an analysis by HT, over the next two days, more than 700 million people across the country will be under either a curfew for a limited time period or one that extends 24x7 with largely only essential services allowed.

Such wide-ranging curfews have been necessitated as India’s second wave of Covid-19 is expanding throughout the country at a never-before-seen pace. For the week ending April 16, India has reported 188,400 new cases every day – this is double of what was seen during the peak of the first wave (93,617 average daily cases for the week ending September 16, 2020).

Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh have imposed curfews that extend all day long, and on all days of the week. In Maharashtra, the curfew will be imposed in all districts for 15 days. In Chhattisgarh, the restrictions are limited to 20 districts, and in Madhya Pradesh to 15 districts. Weekend curfews will be enforced in Delhi, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and urban areas of 10 districts in Odisha. Uttar Pradesh has imposed a statewide curfew on Sunday. Night curfews, meanwhile, will be in place in hundreds of districts across the country with six states and UTs – Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Bihar, and Chandigarh – completely shut at night. In Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir and Odisha, night curfews are limited to urban areas or districts reporting large number of cases.

Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh are the three worst-affected states in terms of the degree to which their second wave has so far exceeded the first wave peak. The fourth such state is Gujarat, but it has only imposed a night curfew so far. Current weekly average of cases in Chhattisgarh is 410% of the peak of the state’s first wave, this number is 290% for Madhya Pradesh, 265% for Maharashtra.

To be sure, most states have only imposed different versions of night curfews. Around 35% of the country’s population is currently under a night curfew.(Hindustan Times)

To be sure, most states have only imposed different versions of night curfews. Around 35% of the country’s population is currently under a night curfew. The regions that have only imposed night curfews are Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, and Bihar. On April 15, the weekly average of Covid-19 cases in these states was 99%, 157%, 128%, 110%, 398%, 67%, and 103% for their first wave peaks, respectively.

Delhi and Chandigarh have also imposed variations of a weekend lockdown in all their administrative regions along with a night curfew. Here the average of cases in the week ending April 15 was 168% and 127% of their biggest peak before the second wave. In Rajasthan and Odisha, the night restrictions extends to urban areas only and in Uttar Pradesh to only 47 districts, but weekend restrictions are statewide. Rajasthan’s weekly average of Covid-19 infections is 168% of its past peak and Uttar Pradesh’s average is 243% of its past peak. Odisha’s current weekly average is only 43% of its last peak. Weekend restrictions of these states make up to almost a quarter (23.8%) of India’s population.

In Chhattisgarh, 81% of the population, 34% of Madhya Pradesh’s population, and all of Maharashtra – which totals to 13% of India’s population – is also under restrictions that extend to all days of the week. Additionally, 3% of the population in Chhattisgarh and 28% of population in Madhya Pradesh is also under a night curfew.

Experts say such limitations on movement of people will slow down the transmission but the impact of such curfews is not likely to be visible for at least a week, if not several days later still, and that too, only if the progress made due to the curbs is more than whatever transmission of the disease occurs during the hours that mobility is unrestricted.

“The weekend curfews will slow down transmission at least during the 48-hour period. Transmission happens from person to person and if mobility is restricted, the transmission will go down. But, it will have a minor impact on the total incidence,” said Dr GC Khilnani, former head of the department of pulmonology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He said any impact on the number of cases will be visible only seven to ten days after the measure is implemented.

“If infections reduce by 10% in these two days, but between Monday and next Monday they again increase by 10%, then you will not be able to see the difference the lockdown of this weekend will make. If the infection rate stays down during the week too, then only we will see an impact. If the infection increases in between now and then, then the lockdown will just mask the extent of increase during the week,” said Dr Lalit Kant, former head of the department of epidemiology at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

It seems situation is really bad in India. Over a thousand deaths last day? They really need to impose some strict policies else things are not looking good.

This new variant B.1.617 is spreading like wildfire. I don’t know where will we end up.:(

Everyone please put up your N95 mask and keep social distancing.

PM reviews COVID-19 surge

As the single-day COVID-19 cases surged to a staggering record-high level, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday chaired a meeting to review the status of preparedness to handle the COVID-19 situation.

The Prime Minister took stock of the availability and supply of ventilators, oxygen and medicines to fight the pandemic and called for utilising the entire national capacity across private and public sectors to produce vaccines, as several states have raised concerns about the shortage of hospital facilities and essentials like oxygen supply.

PM Modi also urged local administrations to be proactive and sensitive to people's concerns. "Together India had defeated COVID-19 last year and India can do it again, with the same principles but faster speed and coordination," he said.

He directed officials to ensure close coordination with states and take all necessary measures to scale up the availability of hospital beds for COVID patients and ensure additional supply of beds through temporary hospitals and isolation centres.

There are numerous families who have somebody or the other currently with "fever" and are not getting themselves tested because of just that.

But then people are also out on streets leading upto hospital,,some arranging their own oxygen cylinders, most without them. Even the deaths are being underreported

yes there are all kinds of people.
I know of two relatives, ladies who are positive but going to shopping and social functions (though they insist they wore their masks..sick)
and we had an uncle who couldn't survive after being in ICU and ventilator for 7 days. His death certificate said cardiac arrest as primary cause and a footnote said secondary symptoms as covid-19.

Manmohan Singh writes to PM Modi, gives 5 suggestions to tackle Covid-19 crisis

As India reels under the second wave of coronavirus, Singh said people are now beginning to wonder when their lives will get back to normal and argued “there are many things we must do to fight the epidemic but a big part of this effort must be ramping up the vaccination programme.”

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking him to make public the orders for doses of coronavirus vaccine placed by the government and indicate how the vaccines will be distributed across states based on a transparent formula.

He also asked the Prime Minister to give some flexibility to states to define categories of frontline workers who can be vaccinated even if they are below 45 years of age.

Pointing out that domestic supplies are limited, Singh suggested that any vaccine that has been cleared for use by credible authorities such as the European Medical Agency or the USFDA, should be allowed to be imported without insisting on domestic bridging trials.

“First, the government should publicise what are the firm orders for doses placed on different vaccine producers and accepted for delivery over the next six months. If we want to vaccinate a target number in this period, we should place enough orders in advance so that producers can adhere to an agreed schedule of supply,” he said.

Secondly, he said the government should indicate how this expected supply will be distributed across states based on a transparent formula.
Follow Covid Live Updates |Coronavirus India Live Updates
“The central government could retain 10 percent for distribution based on emergency needs, but other than that, states should have a clear signal of likely availability so that they can plan their roll out,” he said.

Arguing that states should be given some flexibility to define categories of frontline workers who can be vaccinated even if they are below 45 years of age, he said states, for instance, may want to designate school teachers, bus, three-wheeler and taxi drivers, municipal and panchayat staff, and possibly lawyers who have to attend Courts as frontline workers. “They can then be vaccinated even if they are below 45,” he said.
Singh also asked the Prime Minister to proactively support vaccine producers to expand their manufacturing facilities quickly by providing funds and other concessions.

“In addition, I believe this is the time to invoke the compulsory licensing provisions in the law, so that a number of companies are able to produce the vaccines under a licence. This, I recall, had happened earlier in the case of medicines to deal with the HIV/AIDS disease. As far as Covid-19 is concerned, I have read that Israel has already invoked the compulsory licensing provision and there is an overwhelming case for India to do so as well quickly,” he wrote.

Suggesting that any vaccine that has been cleared for use by credible authorities such as the European Medical Agency or the USFDA, should be allowed to be imported without insisting on domestic bridging trials, he said “we are facing an unprecedented emergency and, I understand, experts are of the view that this relaxation is justified in an emergency.”

“The relaxation could be for a limited period during which the bridging trials could be completed in India. All consumers of such vaccines could be duly cautioned that these vaccines are being allowed for use based on the approval granted by the relevant authority abroad,” he said.

Pointing out that the key to the fight against Covid 19 must be ramping up the vaccination effort, he said “we must resist the temptation to look at the absolute numbers being vaccinated, and focus instead on the percentage of the population vaccinated.”

“Currently, India has vaccinated only a small fraction of its population. I am certain that with the right policy design, we can do much better and very quickly. I hope the government will accept these suggestions immediately and act on them promptly,” he added.

162 pressure swing adsorption plants sanctioned to augment medial oxygen: Govt

The PSA plants manufacture oxygen and help hospitals become self-sufficient in their requirement for medical oxygen, while also reducing the burden on the national grid for its supply of medical oxygen.

The Centre has sanctioned installation of 162 pressure swing adsorption (PSA) plants in public health facilities in all states, the Health Ministry said on Sunday, as demand of medical oxygen goes through the roof amid spiralling coronavirus cases in the country.

The PSA plants manufacture oxygen and help hospitals become self-sufficient in their requirement for medical oxygen, while also reducing the burden on the national grid for its supply of medical oxygen.

A total of 162 PSA oxygen plants have been sanctioned by the government for installation in public health facilities in all states, the ministry tweeted.

“These will augment medical oxygen capacity by 154.19 MT.”

Thirty-three of the 162 PSA plants have been installed — five in Madhya Pradesh, four in Himachal Pradesh, three each in Chandigarh, Gujarat and Uttarakhand; two each in Bihar, Karnataka and Telangana; and one each in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, it said.

Fifty-nine more PSA plants will be installed by April-end, while 80 more will be installed by May-end.

“The entire cost of 162 PSA oxygen plants amounting to Rs 201.58 crore has been borne by the central government. This also includes 7-year maintenance cost to start from 4th year onwards after three years of warranty,” the ministry said in a series of tweets.

India reported a record 2,61,500 new coronavirus cases and 1,501 deaths on Sunday, while active cases have surpassed the 18-lakh mark, the ministry data stated.

Earlier, the ministry had decided to float a tender for import of 50,000 MT of medical oxygen.

It has been directed to finalise the tender for the same and also explore possible sources for import identified by the missions of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Indian variant is being brought into the UK in huge numbers from travellers. India needs to be slapped onto the UK red list immediately!

So TMC can have rallies but Bjp cant?

He is the Prime Minister of India and responsible for taking decisions for the well being of whole country. Being a doctor you tell me was it necessary for him to attend the rally and attract more crowds?? When we have 2.5 lakh Covid cases daily, he should be sitting in Delhi and helping the state governments in battling it. Instead this is happening.

PM BUSY IN BENGAL

Mr Thackeray's call came two days after he wrote to the centre, asking for help in airlifting oxygen from other parts of the country and in providing financial relief for poorer sections of the society .The entire episode broke after sources said Mr Thackeray dialled the Prime Minister's Office in Delhi but was told Prime Minister Modi was in Bengal to campaign for the BJP in state polls.
The Prime Minister's busy campaign schedule - he has addressed multiple rallies across Assam, Bengal and Tamil Nadu - all states holding Assembly elections - in the past few weeks - has raised eyebrows, particularly as many of these poll events violated Covid containment protocols that he, and other senior members of his government, have repeatedly urged people to follow.

If the PM himself doesn’t follow the suit and what he is saying , why do you expect others including TMC to do it?

So govt should fund a pvt company's expansion?

OTOH govt is expanding vaccine manufacturing at PSUs.

If Modiji can take credit, why can’t he help them? While talking about vaccine diplomacy, he was treating the Serum Institute as the sovereign property of the Indian government. Now what happened?

Unlike western governments which poured billions into the research and development of vaccines there is no evidence that the Indian government has provided a cent in research and development funding to the Serum Institute. (This did not stop it turning every overseas vaccine delivery into a photo-op.) The government then commandeered approval of every single Covax shipment sent out from Serum – even directing how many doses would be sent and when.

There has to be equity. If one party is campaigning the other side has to else they lose their appeal to the people. He has responsibility to the people of Bengal too. Health is a state subject, its state government's responsibility.

Why is no one telling mamata to stop? Or does she get a free ticket?

He is the PM, Thackeray or anyone else has to taje appointment to call him. Tommorow he will call when Modi is meeting Boris and say, see Modi is busy with foreigners. The PM isnt at the beck and call of Thackeray, whose incompetent govt has pushed the country into a second wave.

The opposition media wants to put pressure on BJP to get them to stop campaign and help TMC win. Right now indications are that Mamata is losing

Take credit for what? Is it wrong to say that his govt actively promoted vaccines to be made in India?

India has something called nationalization act? They have the right to stop or regulate exports.

Similarly when the whole world was stopping vaccines, India did its best to help other countries. Indian government gifted vaccines to other countries.

When US is stopping vaccine raw materials, why should India not stop? We have done enough already.

Covaxin was developed with the help of ICMR and thats why govt is further expanding its production to nearly 10 cr. They did it at the cost of 150cr.

There has to be equity. If one party is campaigning the other side has to else they lose their appeal to the people. He has responsibility to the people of Bengal too. Health is a state subject, its state government's responsibility.

The PM isnt at the beck and call of Thackeray, whose incompetent govt has pushed the country into a second wave.

Do you know the reality of Gujarat? I have a friend whose father passed away last evening in Ahmedabad. It is crazy there with crematoriums in non-stop mode. The deaths are not being recorded as Covid. It's insane how cheap Modi-Shah can get, just because it is their state. It's so bad, even the High Court asked the state to stop lying about the numbers. So please stop with the Maharashtra rubbish whose density, slums and migratory nature makes it the toughest to deal with something like Covid. Let's not even imagine what's happening in UP.

All BJP ruled states aren't behaving the same way though. Yeddy has done fairly ok at least in our cities here. The BBMP forcibly is conducting tests in apartments where cases are detected. India has been ruined by the BJP's repeated incompetence that they have displayed in everything they've touched other than in politicizing religion and in buying MLAs. When huge crowds flock into the Modi stadium and the pictures are flashed around, when the Health Minister says we've reached the endgame in March - is this some sort of video game we're playing? Britain’s Opposition Labour Party on Sunday joined calls for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to cancel his visit to India, starting next Sunday, amid growing concerns of a new variant of COVID-19 detected in the country. Public Health England (PHE) has said that 77 cases of the so-called double mutant Indian variant have been detected in the UK since last month and that it has now been classed as a Variant Under Investigation (VUI). Downing Street had earlier confirmed a much shorter schedule for the UK prime minister’s visit, with the bulk of the programme including talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi set for a day-long agenda on Monday, April 26.

I can’t see why the prime minister can’t conduct his business with the Indian government via Zoom, said Labour’s Shadow Communities Secretary Steve Reed. The prime minister, like all of us in public life, needs to try and set an example. I’d much rather the prime minister did it by Zoom rather than travelling to India,” he told Sky News’, when asked if the visit should go ahead next week.

A government minister, meanwhile, stressed that there is no evidence the Indian variant can evade vaccine protection or that it is more contagious. ”I’m told there is no evidence at the moment this particular variant is able to get around the vaccine or…that it is necessarily more contagious than the others but we are looking at it, it will be studied,” said Environment Secretary George Eustice.

The variant officially named B.1.617 is believed to be almost certainly playing a part in the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in India and a major spike in infection rates. It has sparked concerns among academics and sections of the UK media, who have called for India to be added to the red list, which involves stricter travel restrictions with a compulsory 10-day hotel quarantine for anyone returning to the UK from such countries. Danny Altmann, a professor of immunology at Imperial College London, is among those who said that he finds it mystifying and slightly confounding that India is not yet on the red list and that those flying into the UK from there are not subjected to the compulsory hotel quarantine.

I think we should be terribly concerned about it, Prof Altmann told the BBC. Meanwhile, speculation is rife that India has been kept off the red list to allow Johnson’s visit to go ahead, even though cut short, and to ensure that India-UK trade negotiations are on track ahead of India’s negotiations with the European Union (EU).

Downing Street has said that designations under the red list, which currently covers around 40 countries, are kept under constant review and so far the message is that the visit will go ahead in its shortened version. ”As with all the prime minister’s visits, his trip to India will prioritise the safety of those involved. All elements of the visit will be Covid secure, the prime minister’s spokesperson said.

A lot is riding on the visit, previously postponed from a Republic Day tour in January, as the first major bilateral visit for Johnson outside Europe since the UK general election in December 2019 and the conclusion of the Brexit transition period at the end of December 2020. The priority is for both sides to agree to a Roadmap 2030’, a plan for the next decade to pave the way to a free trade agreement (FTA) in future.

India Monday reported 2,73,810 new Covid-19 cases and 1,619 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to data from the Union Health Ministry.

The total cases in the country now stand at 1,50,61,919. There are 19,29,329 active cases in the country at present while 1,29,53,821 people have recovered from the disease. The death toll is at 1,78, 769. As many as 12,38,52,566 people have been vaccinated so far.

Meanwhile, with shortage in supplies being flagged across the country, Delhi Sunday joined the growing list of states that are scrambling to ensure adequate availability of oxygen for Covid patients as the country continued to witness a rise in coronavirus cases.

The Centre, however, placed the onus of tackling the situation on state governments, with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal saying that they “should keep demand under control”.

Earlier, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal pointed out that Delhi is facing an “acute shortage of oxygen”. “In view of sharply increasing cases, Delhi needs much more than normal supply. Rather than increasing supply, our normal supply has been sharply reduced and Delhi’s quota has been diverted to other states,” he tweeted.

Right-to-Information activist Saket Gokhale has raised questions over how Leader of the Opposition Devendra Fadnavis or the BJP, as private players, could obtain a crucial drug when its sale is allowed only to the state government. In a series of tweets, he asked how “in the midst of a severe shortage why was BJP hoarding 4.75 crores worth of Remdesivir in their party office (just like in Gujarat)”. “And most importantly - while @nawabmalikncp ji showed yesterday that the Central govt had stopped supplies of Remdesivir to Maharashtra govt, then how was BJP’s Fadnavis allowed to procure it sneakily without informing the state govt? That too stock worth 4.75 crores?” another tweet read.

Gokhale slammed Fadnavis and the BJP for rushing to the police station after Bruck Pharma company director Rajesh Dokina was summoned for inquiry.

“Last night, Vile Parle police station seized Rs 4.74 crore worth of Remdesivir vials that were being secretly moved by Gujarat company. Suddenly, @Dev_Fadnavis shows up at the police station last night & says BJP ordered those vials from Daman and Gujarat.”

‘Crime against humanity’: Priyanka accuses Fadnavis of hoarding Remdesivir

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday accused former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of hoarding Remdesivir, saying a BJP leader holding on to the drug at a time when people are scrambling to arrange it is a “crime against humanity”. Taking to Twitter, the Congress general secretary tagged a video of top Maharashtra BJP

Taking to Twitter, the Congress general secretary tagged a video of top Maharashtra BJP leaders, including Fadnavis, arguing with police officials after the Mumbai Police questioned a pharma company director following information that thousands of vials of the Remdesivir drug, critical in COVID-19 treatment, were to be flown out of the country.

“At a time when people from every corner of the country are requesting for being provided with Remdesivir, and many are struggling to procure a bottle of Remdesivir to save their lives, a BJP leader, who was in responsible position, hoarding Remdesivir is a crime against humanity,” Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

The Mumbai Police on Sunday said they had information that the Remdesivir stock was going to be flown abroad as air cargo, despite a ban on the export of the drug.

While Leader of Opposition Fadnavis claimed the director was picked up because the BJP managed to get permissions in place for the supply of the drug to Maharashtra, activist Saket Gokhale wondered how did a “private individual like Fadnavis” procure Remdesivir stock from Gujarat when the sale is allowed only to the government.

The BJP objected to the pharma executive’s grilling by the police, saying the state government was playing politics amid the pandemic.

On learning that the pharma company director was being quizzed, Fadnavis and another state BJP leader Pravin Darekar rushed to the police station.

PM Holds Meeting On Covid Situation As India Battles Record Surge

On Sunday, PM Modi reviewed the Covid situation in Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency, and stressed on the need for vaccination for people over 45 years of age.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding a meeting to discuss the coronavirus crisis in the country as India battles an unprecedented surge in cases that saw a new record daily high today with over 2.73 lakh fresh infections.
The meeting began at around 11.30 am today, hours after India crossed another grim milestone to report the highest surge in cases ever from the beginning of the pandemic last year.

This is the second consecutive day the Prime Minister is holding a meeting over the Covid surge.

On Sunday, PM Modi reviewed the Covid situation in Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency, and stressed on the need for vaccination for people over 45 years of age.

According to a statement, PM Modi emphasised on implementing ''tracking, tracing and testing'', saying this has to be fully followed to check the virus' spread in the same manner the first wave was curbed. The Prime Minister also asked the administration to ensure that preventive measures like social distancing and the use of masks are practised.

Days ago, PM Modi was also briefed about the efforts being made by the government to import medical grade oxygen to bridge the demand-supply gap amid the recent massive surge. At a review meeting comprising senior officials of several ministries, PM Modi suggested that the production of medical oxygen should be scaled up, a government statement said.

India also reported 1,619 deaths in a new record high today. The total caseload is now 1.5 crore; 1.78 lakh people have died so far. This is the fifth straight day that over 2 lakh cases were reported.

Maharashtra, Delhi and Karnataka saw the biggest single-day surge in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra logged 68,631 infections, Delhi reported 25,462 new cases while Karnataka saw a spike of 19,067 cases.

As the second - and more deadly - wave of coronavirus grips the country, several strict measures have been implemented, including curfews, across states to tackle the crisis.

Delhi will be under complete curfew from tonight to next Monday morning amid a record rise in cases. The capital had earlier imposed a weekend curfew.

Maharashtra also announced tough restrictions till May 1 that include a ban on gatherings and only essential activities to break the chain of infection.

Didn't Rahul Gandhi quit campaigning? Now you can argue that his party had no chance in Bengal but Mamata and Modi are cordially in touch when they're not fighting politically. Surely Modi as the PM could have worked out something with her. You can try and defend as much as you like, but the party you prefer, is as bad as the party you oppose. And worse in many aspects, considering the higher moral ground they constantly adopt and hypocrisies riddling them. It's just that the BJP champions your religion and that makes you bond with them.

And given our migratory nature too, the numbers are relatively low. Poor fellow is infected for the 2nd time. Hope he recovers.

Modi-Shah have blood on their hands, but this is nothing new.

Modi and Mamata and their parties has been at each other's throats since long. Many Bjp workers have been killed. Their candidate yesterday was shot.

Mamata was addressing a rally few hours back.

Surely the CM could have done something.

According to Bjp opponents everything is Bjp's responsibility while the other side has full rights to do what it pleases.

Mamata is thoroughly inept incompetent and her party is totally corrupt. There is a reason she is facing such anti incumbency.

No one needs to champion a religion, most of my business is in Odisha, the CM there is a neutral man and he is CM for 30 years. But if i have to choose between a party that supports one particular minority community, settles illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas in Bengal and a party that promises to stop these illegal immigrants then i will choose the later.

From where did the second wave start and spread?

You talk of Gujarat or UP, whatabout Maharashtra Delhi Kerala chattisgarh?

Why are you posting the fake news circulated by Saket Gokhale a congress guy?

https://www.google.co.in/amp/s/thep...thackeray-govt-fanned-controversy/642173/?amp

The FDA minister of Maharashtra knew everything and had allowed the firm to sell remdesivir in Maharashtra and bjp had informed the minister that they will distribute the drug for free.

The medicine was procured from Daman a UT and not Maharashtra.

You know why opposition parties lose elections to Bjp while you fret, because fake news like this doesn't wash with the public any more.

Days of using fake narrative to win elections ended in 2004, when congress defeated Vajpayee.

Boris just cancelled his trip, and this buffoon was dithering all week that he would go.

It means his advisors told him don’t go because it was too risky which most likely means that coronavirus has gone totally out of control in India.

After the states were given responsibility, many have failed..states like delhi, maharashtra, kerala, MP. Modi should take over the control to steer the nation to safety.

Delhi begins week-long lockdown after a weekend curfew failed to halt record spike in cases overwhelming health services
India has had over 200,000 cases a day since 15 April - with 1,620 new deaths reported on Sunday
UK health officials investigating whether India variant might spread more easily and evade vaccines
UK PM Boris Johnson has cancelled his planned trip to India next week

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said it was "only sensible" to cancel his trip to India, due to take place on 26 April, given the Covid situation in the country.

India has been reporting more than 200,000 cases daily since 15 April.

Mr Johnson said he would instead speak to the Indian PM Narendra Modi online.

The trip has already been rescheduled once - it was originally meant to take place in January but was cancelled due to the UK's national lockdown.

The UK government had hoped the visit - billed as the PM's first major overseas trip since taking office - would boost trade and investment ties, and move the two countries closer to securing a post-Brexit trade agreement.

However, the spread of a Covid variant in India had led some to suggest the trip should not go ahead.

On Sunday, India confirmed 1,620 deaths from the virus and its capital Delhi has been put into lockdown.

Health officials in the UK are investigating whether the variant, first found in India, spreads more easily and is able to resist the vaccine.

Public Health England says 73 cases have been detected in England, and four in Scotland.

India is not currently on the UK government's "red list" - meaning people returning from the country do not have to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days.

The chief medical advisor for NHS Test and Trace, Dr Susan Hopkins, said the UK did not have enough data yet to determine if India should be put on the list.

Mr Johnson said: "The red list is very much a matter for the independent UK Health Security Agency - they will have to take that decision."

Asked about his cancelled India visit, the PM said it was "frustrating" but "Narendra Modi and I have basically come to the conclusion that, very sadly, I won't be able to go ahead with the trip.

"I do think it's only sensible to postpone, given what's happened in India, the shape of the pandemic there.

"Countries around the world including our own have been through this - I think everybody's got a massive amount of sympathy with India, what they're going through."

He added that the relationship between the UK and India is of "huge importance".

'Absurd'
Last week, Downing Street said Mr Johnson's visit to India would be scaled down - with the bulk of the meetings taking place on Monday 26 April, rather than across four days as originally planned.

But Labour argued the trip should be cancelled entirely, with its shadow communities minister, Steve Reed, telling Sky News he did not understand "why the prime minister can't conduct his business with the Indian government by Zoom".

One senior Conservative also told the BBC it would have been "absurd" for the trip go ahead.

Following the second cancellation of the visit to India, the UK and Indian government said Mr Johnson and Mr Modi remained in regular contact and would meet in person later this year.

There isn't much difference between these 2, just that Trump is bit more literate.

Maybe from Modi....

lol BJP vs fake news :)))

So there are basically 2 versions. One that the Congress is trying to spin and the innocent lamb version of the BJP. Even if the BJP's version were true, what business is it of theirs to procure it and try to distribute it as political sweets.

50 passengers from a Delhi to HK flight tested positive for Corona. 25 were positive on arrival and another 22 tested positive within 12 days. Makes you think that the 72 hr pre flight tests being done as somewhat suspect.

Record Number Of People On Flight Test Positive For Covid

Record Number Of People On Flight Test Positive For Covid
A record 47 passengers from a single fight tested positive for coronavirus.

Flight 6395 from Delhi to Hong Kong landed on 4 April and within two weeks almost 50 of its passengers had tested positive for the virus.

All passengers aboard the flight, operated by Indian airline Vistara, had given a negative test for Covid-19 within 72-hours of its departure - in keeping with Hong Kong's travel requirements.

However, according to the Independent, a test after the fight found 25 passengers positive with an additional 22 cases 12 days after arrival.

The record-breaking news comes after India has seen a sharp rise in cases since the beginning of the month while the country deals with a new more infectious strain of the virus.

Speaking to the Independent, Mumbai-based Dr Sharad Awachar said: "What we are dealing with here is a catastrophe.

"I have to look after 75 beds of an ICU daily and the input of patients is way more than the output. We are at full capacity."

The UK has now added India to its 'red list' of countries, meaning travel to the country is banned.

Announcing the decision Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: "After studying the data, and on a precautionary basis, we've made the difficult but vital decision to add India to the red list."

He added: "India is a country I know well and love. Between our two countries we have ties of friendship and family. I understand the impact of this decision but I hope the House will concur that we must act."

Hancock said most of the 103 cases of the new variant - officially known as B.1.617 - confirmed in the UK had been linked to international travel.

Christina Pagel, professor of operational research at UCL and member of Independent Sage, said: "We are not likely to get definitive evidence on B.1.617 for a few weeks given low sequencing, testing and vaccination rates in India and low case numbers here."

From 23 April almost all people who have travelled from India in the last 10 days will be refused entry, while British or Irish passport holders or residents will be allowed in but must quarantine in a hotel for 10 days.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said earlier today that he had cancelled a scheduled trip to India later this month.

Our inept government here in the UK has once again reacted Late to put a high risk country in to the RED list

Correct and it also comes into effect at 4am on Friday I believe. Plenty of time for more people to travel from India to the UK in that time.

India being on the UK red or black list does not interest me neither does it remotely benefit Pakistan. Boris cancelling his visit to India does not remove Pak from the UK red list. I know the Covid situation in India is amongst the worst in the world especially in Delhi that seems to be on the brink of complete catastrophe. I have seen video's of people being cremated on the streets so bad is the situation. By comparison things in regards to this pandemic appears much better in Pak.

BJP MPs stop oxygen tanker for puja, photo ops as patients gasps for breath in Madhya Pradesh

Indore: In an unusual incident, Bharatiya Janata Party workers on Saturday (April 17) night stopped a tanker carrying over 30 tonnes of oxygen with the motive of performing puja and rituals on it.

While the patients in the city were fighting for every breath, the politicians were holding up the oxygen supply for photo ops. The BJP MPs looked at this moment as a bizarre opportunity to make it into a media spectacle.

The incident took place days after CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan ordered that the oxygen tanks be given ambulance status, which means that the tanks will be escorted by police to ensure there is no hold-up.

The tanker driver had started his journey from Jamnagar in Gujarat at 1 am and stopped only once to get lunch in his 700 km journey. The driver wasn’t expecting such a welcome from the local politicians.

UP govt announces lockdown on Saturdays, Sundays; night curfew in all districts

Also, night curfew will be imposed every night in districts with more than 500 active cases of the deadly virus.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday announced a weekend lockdown across the state to combat the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. Also, the night curfew will remain imposed in all districts of the state.

Uttar Pradesh Home Department's Additional Chief Secretary Awanish Awasthi confirmed that a weekend lockdown will be imposed in the state on Saturdays and Sundays starting from April 23.

Lockdown will come into effect on Friday at 8 pm and will continue till 7 am Monday. Only essential services will be allowed to operate during the lockdown, he confirmed.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government is currently at loggerheads with a decision of the Allahabad High Court to impose lockdown in five districts.

The high court had directed the UP government to impose strict restrictions including closing of malls, shopping complexes and restaurants till April 26 in five cities, but stopped short of calling it a "complete lockdown".

Allahabad, Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur, Nagar and Gorakhpur are the cities in which the high court has directed curbs. The high court had said these curbs are "nowhere close to a complete lockdown".

Irked at the order, the Yogi Adityanath-led government moved the Supreme Court against the high court order.

After hearing the plea earlier today, the apex court stayed the order and listed the matter to be heard again after two weeks.

India's ruling party says UK travel 'red list' decision was a surprise

The decision to place India on the UK's coronavirus travel "red list" came as a surprise, a spokesman for India's ruling party says.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Nalin Kohli, the spokesman for BJP, adds that he does not know "if there's an explanation because there's nothing in the public space".

He says "there is a lack of data" on the variant in India.

UK health officials are currently investigating whether a Covid variant first found in India spreads more easily and evades vaccines.

Kohli tells the programme: "Of course, the UK is in its sovereign rights to decide whatever it deems fit. It would cause a lot of inconvenience to people who are travelling.

"It came as a surprise news item, so I don't know if there's an explanation because there's nothing in the public space.

"There has been a sudden spurt of numbers in whatever [it] seems to be... Some reports suggest that it's a double mutant.

"There's no data conclusively to say that it's the UK or the Brazilian or any other variant which is linking up with the local situation."

Kohli adds that India is taking steps in terms of vaccination and ramping up facilities such as isolation coaches on trains.

Asked about election rallies taking place in the country, he says cases are rising in areas where election rallies have not been held, including the state of Maharashtra and in Delhi.

Manmohan writes to Modi with 5 suggestions for tackling Covid

In a letter to the prime minister, the veteran Congress leader said one must not look at absolute numbers but the total percentage of the population that has been vaccinated.

Invoking compulsory licensing provisions for drug manufacturers and giving some flexibility to states to define categories of frontline workers who can be vaccinated even if they are below 45 years are some of the steps mooted by him.

"The key to our fight against COVID-19 must be ramping up the vaccination effort. We must resist the temptation to look at the absolute numbers being vaccinated, and focus instead on the percentage of the population vaccinated," he said in his letter.

Noting that India currently has vaccinated only a small fraction of its population, Singh said he is certain that with the right policy design, "we can do much better and very quickly".

"There are many things we must do to fight the epidemic but a big part of this effort must be ramping up the vaccination programme," he said while making several suggestions.

Currently, people above 45 years of age are eligible for vaccination.

He said some states may want to designate school teachers, bus, three-wheeler and taxi drivers, municipal and panchayat staff, and possibly lawyers who have to attend courts as frontline workers, and they can then be vaccinated even if they are below 45 years.

The suggestions come a day after the Congress Working Committee met and discussed the efforts required to fight the COVID pandemic.

Singh said the Centre should publicise vaccine dose orders placed and accepted for delivery over the next six months.

He said the government should indicate how vaccine supplies are to be distributed to states.

"If we want to vaccinate a target number in this period, we should place enough orders in advance so that producers can adhere to an agreed schedule of supply," he noted.

The former PM said the government should indicate how this expected vaccine supply will be distributed across states based on a transparent formula.

He suggested that the central government could retain 10 percent for distribution based on emergency needs, and states should have a clear signal of likely availability so that they can plan their rollout.

Noting that India has emerged as the largest vaccine producer in the world, he said at this time of a public health emergency, the government must proactively support vaccine producers to expand their manufacturing facilities quickly by providing funds and other concessions.

"I believe this is the time to invoke the compulsory licensing provisions in the law so that a number of companies are able to produce the vaccines under a licence. This, I recall, had happened earlier in the case of medicines to deal with the HIV/AIDS disease," he said.

And then see how rudely Harshvardhan (our health minister) replies to those very prudent and humble advises.

Ask Cong also to follow your advice: Vardhan to Manmohan

Hitting back at senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh for his critique of the government's COVID-19 management, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Monday alleged the second wave of the pandemic was instead fuelled by Congress ruled states as they were busy raising doubts about vaccines rather than vaccinating people.

Responding to Singh's letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vardhan also said that the letter drafters of the senior Congress leader have done a great disservice to his standing.

Acknowledging that while Singh understands the importance of vaccination as an important method of fighting the COVID-19 battle, Vardhan said in his letter that "irresponsible" public pronouncements made by some Congress leaders have resulted in a below national average vaccination coverage of senior citizens and even front-line workers in some of the Congress-ruled states.

Tweeting the letter to Singh, the health minister said, "History shall be kinder to you Dr Manmohan Singh ji if your offer of 'constructive cooperation' and valuable advice was followed by your @INCIndia leaders as well in such extraordinary times!"

Singh on Sunday wrote to Prime Minister Modi suggesting five measures to battle the COVID-19 crisis, including ramping up vaccination and boosting supply of medicines.

Vardhan said, "People in responsible positions in your party as well as in the state governments formed by your party do not seem to share your view."

He expressed shock that senior members of the Congress party are yet to utter a single word of gratitude towards scientists and vaccine manufacturers for innovating under trying circumstances and empowering the world with vaccines.

"Let alone thanking our scientists, many Congress members and Congress ruled state governments have taken extraordinary interest in spreading falsehoods regarding the efficacy of these vaccines, thereby fuelling vaccine hesitancy, and playing with the lives of our countrymen.

"A sitting chief minister of your party created a dubious world record of sorts by being the only head of government directly inciting people against an indigenously developed vaccine! Some Congress leaders even shamed the vaccines in public but took their doses in private, quietly," he charged.

"A word of advice from you to them even if it had been done in private by you may have ensured better cooperation from these people. Knowing your penchant for constructive cooperation, which you have said you always believed in, I would assume that you did advise them and yet, quite clearly, your advice has been in vain," the minister said.

Vardhan said the former prime minister's advice to not get tempted to go by absolute numbers, but to go by percentage of population covered, is not incorrect.

However, he said this is a practice that must be followed uniformly and junior members of "your party" too must follow your advice.
Quite obviously, it cannot be that the discussion on total cases, active cases or mortality is based on absolute numbers, which the Congress party often tries to do, but the vaccination numbers continue to be touted as a percentage of the population covered, he said.

With due respect, and "irrespective of the negativity that your party spreads" Vardhan said he takes Singh's suggestions at face value and with the belief that they are made keeping national interest in mind.

"However, it does seem that those who drafted your letter or advised you, have done a great disservice to your standing by misleading you regarding material that is already in public domain," he said.

And then people here say why doesn't someone offer advises instead of attacking these incompetent clowns. That's because these clowns think they're beyond any advises/suggestions/course corrections and are doing absolutely fine.
