Our health minister is one of a kind. The way she coordinated everything and earned people’s trust in the system is laudable. But all said, We do need a permanent system to deal with emergencies like these. They have to be anticipated. Isolation wards, trained staff, adequate equipments and lab facilities should always be there. The Corona scare is not over yet.

The tourism ministry is tracking the whereabouts of 450 Iranian tourists who entered the country in February this year, in view of the spread of coronavirus in their home country, senior officials of the ministry said Friday.

The officials said the health ministry has written to them to track these tourists who had entered India before the travel advisory became applicable for Iranian nationals.

Iran has the third-highest number of deaths, currently standing at 124, following Italy where 148 deaths have been confirmed so far after China that has recorded the highest number of 3,042 deaths due to COVID-19.

“Most of these tourists have not been found at the hotel addresses that they had provided on their visa application forms. Tourists often change their hotels while touring.

“We are trying to track them through tour operators and agents. However, I would like to clarify that it is not that they are infected patients of coronavirus. They are persons of interest only because they have come from a country that has reported such cases,” said a senior official of the tourism ministry. The official also said there is no protocol in any country to keep tabs of the whereabouts of incoming tourists after they land in the country.

“We are awaiting an updated list from immigration authorities as there could be many on the present list who could have flown back to Iran. We should be able to track the rest in a day or two,” the official said. Most of the passengers are visiting India on tourism and business visas. Earlier on Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs said arrangements are being made to facilitate the return of stranded Indians from Iran in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak through normal civil aviation channels.

Until Tuesday, travellers from only 12 countries were being screened for coronavirus, but after new cases erupted on Wednesday, the Union Ministry has now decided that every passenger coming on an international flight will be screened.

Misinformation, fake news spark India coronavirus fears

Mumbai, India - India's battle against the coronavirus has many obstacles - large crowds, a stretched health system and inadequate infrastructure - as the number of infections rose to 43 on Monday.

But beyond these, familiar foes are rearing their heads: misinformation and fake news.

Through its vast social media networks, a wave of inaccuracy is spreading on coronavirus, which causes an illness known as COVID-19.

From offering unverified home remedies to tackle the virus, to floating fake advisories asking people to avoid foods such as ice cream and chicken, and sharing conspiracy theories, Indians' phones are being flooded with misinformation.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was forced to appeal to citizens, asking them to not heed to rumours surrounding COVID-19.

The country's stock exchange plunged to its lowest level since 2010 amid fears of the disease.

Biggest market for WhatsApp

The scale of the country's social media usage complicates the fight against misinformation.

India is the biggest market for the Facebook-owned messaging application, WhatsApp, with more than 400 million users in a country which had 468 million smartphones in 2017.

Dozens of people have been killed in public lynchings by angry crowds during the past four years over WhatsApp rumours they were child kidnappers.

Since the coronavirus outbreak last December in China, misinformation, especially through WhatsApp, has risen, says Shachi Sutaria, a fact checker focused on science and health, with Boom, one of India's leading fact-checking websites.

"Normally, we don't see such high levels of misinformation around health issues in India. Earlier, we would get two to three messages a week on health issues that we would fact check. Now, we get up to five to six messages every day, much of it on coronavirus."

One message, claiming to be an advisory from UNICEF, debunked last week, asks people to avoid ice creams and other cold foods and recommends frequent washing of clothes because "corona virus when it falls on the fabric remains nine hours (sic)".

Another recommends heavy Vitamin C intake, yet another message lists a do-it-yourself (DIY) detection test for the virus.

A similar message warns people to "not hold your thirst because once your membrane in your throat is dried, the virus will invade into your body within 10 minutes."

Another more sinister type of viral message lists large Hindu congregations and takes pride that they have never been sources of epidemics, alleging that "weirdest eating habits of some of the countries should be banned (sic)," and ending with extolling the virtues of Hinduism.

On WhatsApp, numerous videos are circulating that purportedly show scenes from China - from videos of men being shot at, to scenes of bodies lying on streets - to show the impact of coronavirus.

Many of these videos have been debunked by fact-checking agencies to be old videos, mock drills and even scenes from movies.

Searching for answers in videos

The panic over the spread of COVID-19 has meant that Indians are also searching for answers on YouTube, which has more than 265 million monthly active users in India.

One of the most popular videos about the spread of the coronavirus comes from a small Indian city, 270km from New Delhi.

In Bareilly with a population of nearly one million, a team of people is circulating viral videos on the spread of the virus, with healthy doses of unverified information and conspiracy theories.

Prajapati News, a YouTube channel with over 6.21 million subscribers, has put out various six-minute videos with clickbait headlines and graphic image thumbnails.

One explainer, This is Where the Coronavirus Came From, viewed 4.7 million times, says the virus spreads through seafood.

Another video the channel has uploaded alleges the virus leaked from a Chinese government lab where it was being created to target rival nations. The video has been viewed more than 765,000 times.

Talking to Al Jazeera, its founder Vishal Prajapati says the channel has been careful about not spreading misinformation and insists that his information is well-referenced.

"I saw an English news clip and it looked like a Chinese news channel where they said this, so I thought it would be interesting for an Indian audience."

Prajapati's videos are helping him draw in more subscribers - he says his subscriber count is increasing by more than 10,000 daily.

Advisory criticised

The Modi government's communication about the virus has been far from scientifically rigorous.

Elected representatives from Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have offered bizarre cures - one said cow urine and cow dung could be cures, while yet another distributed cloves "energised by mantras," according to reports.

The government's advisory, recommending herbs and homeopathy medicines as cures, has been criticised by fact checkers.

This, coupled with the dangerous levels of misinformation, has meant that people are believing many of these falsities.

Boom, the fact-checking website, had reported the case of a man in southern India who killed himself after he saw numerous videos of coronavirus and ended up believing that he had contracted it.

"The problem with fake news is that its virality is way faster than its debunking. Often, despite debunking a piece of fake news, we see that the same claim has emerged again," says Sutaria, the fact checker from Boom.

India's Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan was unavailable for comment, despite repeated attempts.

But on Monday, Dr Vardhan asked states to set up "rapid action" teams as the number of coronavirus infections rose to 43 and around 3,000 people were placed under surveillance.

A senior health ministry official, not wishing to be named, told Al Jazeera that the government would send text messages to citizens with verified advisories to counteract misinformation.

The central government has also ordered telecom companies to make an audio clip explaining coronavirus as a caller tune for mobile phone users, as it fights misinformation.

New Delhi: To ensure the coronavirus doesn’t spread in Delhi, the Hindu Mahasabha has decided to organise a ‘gaumutra party’ on the lines of tea parties, according to its president, Chakrapani Maharaj.

The sixth case of coronavirus was confirmed in India Tuesday, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he held an extensive review on the country’s preparedness.


“Had an extensive review regarding preparedness on the COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus. Different ministries and states are working together, from screening people arriving in India to providing prompt medical attention,” he said in a tweet.

On the same day, Maharaj told ThePrint that there is a need to create greater awareness among the people on how gaumutra (cow urine), gobar (cow-dung) and consuming cow products can help eliminate the coronavirus.

“Just like we organise tea parties, we have decided to organise a gaumutra party, wherein we will inform people about what is coronavirus and how, by consuming cow-related products, people can be saved from it,” Maharaj, who heads one of the two factions of the Mahasabha, said.

“The event will have counters that will provide gaumutra for people to consume. At the same time, we will also put cow products like cow-dung cakes and agarbatti made from that. Upon using these, the virus will die immediately.”

The event will be first organised at Hindu Mahasabha Bhawan in Delhi, following which such ‘parties’ will be held across the country. “We are in touch with gaushalas (cow shelters) across the country, who can collaborate and work with us in our mission to eliminate corona,” he added.

Maharaj added that a big event will be organised in Delhi soon after Holi to raise awareness about the cause of coronavirus, which he claimed was the killing of animals.

“We want to create awareness about jeev hatya (killing of beings), which is the main cause of coronavirus. I know people will not believe me, but it would not have spread in India as we are mostly vegetarians,” he said.

Maharaj said after Telangana ministers organised a “publicity stunt” of consuming non-vegetarian food publicly, “the virus came to India after listening to the animals cry for help”, he claimed.

“Corona Bharat mein yagya anushthan ke kaaran shaant tha. Lekin Telangana ke in naadaan, ahankari mantriyon ne jeev hatya kar jis prakaar se sarvajanik chicken kha kar corona ko lalkaara hai, isse Bharat mein bhi ab corona ke vikraal roop dekhne ki aanshanka ban gayi hai. Atah, in mantriyo ko samay rehte corona se tatkal maafi maang leni chahiye, anyatha anarth hoga, jise koi nahin rok sakta,” he said.

Translation: Corona was quiet in India due to traditional practices like yagyas. But Telangana’s ignorant, egotistical ministers killed animals to consume chicken publicly and challenged ‘corona’, because of which the worst form of ‘corona’ is now looming over India. That’s why these ministers should, in the nick of time, apologise to ‘corona’, otherwise there will be a catastrophe that no one can stop.

Maharaj added that there was “no need to panic”, and if people start consuming gaumutra and turn vegetarian, the virus would be contained.

He had a word of advice for vegetarians too. “Vegetarians need not worry; it will not impact them. But still, as a precautionary measure, they can also start consuming gaumutra.”

Example : In hyderabad where I live, last week 2 software employees were tested positive but now they have recovered & their results are negative today , so as I said young ppl have more chance of survival.

Remember India is nation of 65 to 70% people under the age of 40 ! Also in cities like hyderabad, bangalore you have young blood working in software field. Hence survival rate is more for us !

Amid the rising cases of coronavirus affliction, India on Tuesday barred entry of the nationals of three more countries, France, Germany and Spain, suspending the regular as well as e-Visas granted to them till date, if they have not yet entered the country.

As per the latest travel advisory issued by the government of India in response coronavirus, all visas and e-visas issued to nationals of France, Germany and Spain who have not entered India stand suspended with immediate effect.

Further on, visas and e-visas granted to nationals of Italy, Iran, including visa on arrival for Japan and South Korea issued on or before March 3, 2020, and who have not entered India stand suspended as well. The advisory also suspends the visa and e-visa if granted on or before 1st of February 2020 of those foreign nationals who have travelled to China, Iran, Italy, South Korea, Japan, France, Germany and Spain.

Issuing an additional travel advisory (II) for COVID-19 for Indians intending to travel abroad, the ministry said more than 100 countries across the world now have reported cases of COVID-19.

According to the advisory, people travelling to these countries or those who have travelled abroad might come in contact with people affected with COVID-19 during their stay or even while in transit at the airports.

This restriction applies to all forms of travel: air, land or sea travels.

Making provision for emergencies the advisory reads, those requiring to travel to India due to compelling reasons may seek fresh visas from the nearest Indian embassy /consulate.

The caveat for Italian and South Korean nationals, if granted emergency visas as of March 5, 2020, is to carry a medical certificate, Tested Negative for Covid-19, from designated laboratories of their respective countries.

If the foreign nationals are already in India, then their visas stand valid. Those holding diplomatic passports or OCI or are officials of the UN and other international bodies and aircrew from the countries specified above are exempted from restrictions on entry, however, they would need to go through medical screening on arrival.

The total number of coronavirus infected cases have surpassed 110,000 thousand globally including deaths almost touching 4000. Over 100 countries have reported of coronavirus cases with China, Iran, Italy, South Korea are on the hit list while the numbers are escalating in the UK, Europe and the US.

You can't lock down in India no matter what you do. India has much bigger population with lack of awareness in order to proceed with lock down.

Even in case of polio, think of how many decades it actually required.

I didn’t mean complete lock down but we can ban mass gatherings, close schools, theatres etc in all these states. All the authority’s including the police, health officials, media, airports should be well coordinated to help in detecting new cases. Giving proper directions to the primary health workers and field workers to deal with suspected cases and Contact tracing all those positive cases and putting every one with suspicion in home quarantine should be made a priority in all states not just Kerala..In that way we can be more prepared and give extra care to the highly vulnerable group. For all of this to happen, the system needs to be efficient and people should be able to trust on them. Banning foreign entry is not enough. It already has a local presence now. Measures should be taken at the earliest before it goes out of our hand like it’s going on in italy.

May be but if you observe the trend worldwide it's old people or people who have existing illness died where even climate temperatures played a part. People who are less than 45 have more chance of survival.
In india most of these cases are of people less than 45 and hence the survival rate will be more. Example : In hyderabad where I live, last week 2 software employees were tested positive but now they have recovered & their results are negative today , so as I said young ppl have more chance of survival.

Remember India is nation of 65 to 70% people under the age of 40 ! Also in cities like hyderabad, bangalore you have young blood working in software field. Hence survival rate is more for us !

I agree there is no need to panic but downplaying the seriousness of a situation in a way that prevents people from taking reasonable precautions is just as bad. It’s mortality rate is 3.7% in China. Let’s say if it affects 1 lakh people in India, there will be 3700 deaths. That’s not something that you can take lightly .

Thanks Guys. He has contacted the Indian embassy at Jakarta and they said both of them are good to land in India as long as they don’t have any symptoms. But even a sign of cough or sneeze and they are quarantined..

In view of the coronavirus outbreak, all passenger movements through immigration land checkposts at borders with Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar will be suspended from March 15 till further orders.

In a statement, the Union Home Ministry said on Friday that the people will be allowed to travel through 19 of 37 land immigration checkposts from Saturday midnight.

The announcements come after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. Over 5,000 people have died due to COVID-19. In India too, the number of cases of coronavirus continues to rise.

"Restrictions on international passenger traffic through land checkposts in view of the spread of COVID-19. All types of passenger movements through all the immigration land check posts located at India-Bangladesh border, India-Nepal border, India-Bhutan border and India-Myanmar Border will be suspended with effect from 00:00 hrs on March 15," the statement said.

The ministry issued a number of check posts which are exempted from this notification.

It also announced that the anticipation of foreigners in the border 'haats' shall remain suspended with immediate effect until further orders.

"There will be intensified health inspections at all these entry points and any traveller whether Indian or Nepalese or Bhutanese or from any other country showing COVID-19 symptoms or with a recent travel history to one of seven COVID-19 outbreak countries namely Italy, Iran, China, Spain, France, Germany and Republic of Korea shall be subjected to quarantine in the appropriate facility of state or central government," the statement further said.

The number of positive coronavirus cases in the country climbed to 93 even as the Central and state governments ramped up efforts to fight the highly contagious disease. Two persons have died of the disease in Delhi and Karnataka.

India has already declared coronavirus a disaster, the Centre has also declared masks and hand sanitizers as essential commodities under Essential Commodities Act up to June 30, 2020. Under the Essential Commodities Act, states can ask manufacturers to enhance their production capacity of these items, to make the supply chain smooth.

Proposed by Prime Minister Modi, a video conference of Saarc leaders to frame a strategy to counter the coronavirus will be held on Sunday evening, said people familiar with the development. While the top leaders of six Saarc states agreed to Modi’s suggestion for forging a joint strategy on Covid-19, Pakistan announced shortly after midnight on Friday that it would participate in the video conference.

Earlier, PM Modi announced that no minister in his government will travel abroad in the coming days “to break the chain of spread” and also nudged fellow countrymen to “avoid non-essential travel”. He further advised people to “avoid large gatherings” and not to panic.

Union Minister of State for Health Ashwini Choubey said the government has issued an advisory asking civil hospitals and medical colleges to set up isolation wards.

“We are trying our best to contain the spread of coronavirus which has spread to 12 states,” said the minister.

The Central Railway and Western Railway have withdrawn curtains from AC coaches in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“As per the extant instructions, curtains and blankets provided in AC coaches are not washed every trip. In order to prevent spread of COVID-19, blankets and curtains should be immediately withdrawn from service till further orders,” said Western Railway PRO (Public Relations Officer).

“Passengers should be advised to bring their own blankets in their own interest. Wide publicly should be given to this effect. Some quantity of additional bed-sheets may be kept for any exigencies,” the official added.

Union health ministry official said seven positive cases, including five from Uttar Pradesh and one each from Rajasthan and Delhi, have been discharged after treatment.

The Union Health Ministry has begun working on framing guidelines for handling the bodies of those who die of the disease.

Though it is unlikely that coronavirus infection could spread from handling of a body, the guidelines are being drafted to dispel any misconception and raise awareness regarding spread of the disease from a deceased, a health ministry official said.

“Coronavirus infection is a respiratory disease which spreads through droplets and the probability of mortuary or disposal staff contracting the virus from the dead is unlikely as against the case of high-risk pathogens like Ebola and Nipah which have very high chances of spreading through direct contact with body-fluids of the deceased,” the health ministry official said.

The circumstances of the case, and the quarantine in response to it, indicate a serious chance of local transmission of COVID-19—that is, transmission that has not occurred outside Indian borders. At two separate press briefings held on Friday, both the health ministry and the Indian Council of Medical Research—also a government body—downplayed the possibility of local transmission. The latest Situation Report from the World Health Organisation, issued on Thursday, categorised India among countries having local transmission. India has joined countries such as Italy, Korea and China in the category, all with high burdens of the virus and ongoing human-to-human contagion domestically.

In its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian government continues to operate under the assumption of having to deal with what the WHO categorises as “imported cases only”—where transmission has been limited to international travellers alone. This is reflected in the decision to cancel all but a small set of visas, largely sealing the country’s borders, and to limit testing for the virus to those with a history of recent international travel and individuals who have had contact with them. The WHO’s indication that India is working under a faulty assumption shows the government’s present approach to the pandemic to be hugely inadequate. With the current limits on testing, India is likely blind to the scale of local transmission.

“I’d trust the WHO report because they have clearly-defined criteria,” a health-policy expert with a private think-tank explained, speaking on condition of anonymity. The government shut borders a few days ago, the expert said, but it is clear that many asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19—people who had yet to show symptoms of infection—came into India in the last weeks. “We don’t know who they are, and we are not trying to find them aggressively.”

The expert had a grim prognosis. “I feel there is undetected local transmission going on,” he said. “This is not something that can be hidden. The cases will start showing up at hospitals within a week, and we will then get a full measurement of how many cases we missed during these days.”

“At the moment, my sympathies lie with the government—not because I work for them but because I believe they are genuinely doing their best,” a government medical official said, insisting on anonymity. “I do think the testing should be more liberal, but I know that the government is working hard at procuring and validating the quality of testing kits. The minute they feel confident about their resources, they will expand testing criteria.” Only a handful of government-accredited laboratories have been allowed to test for the virus, with private laboratories excluded. “The government is not averse to the idea of working with the private sector,” the official said, and “they will do it when testing kits become available.”

South Korea is the only country so far to allow universal testing, free of cost, for anyone showing symptoms. Its fatality rate for confirmed COVID-19 cases is 0.7 percent. The WHO has reported a 3.4 percent fatality rate globally. Scientists estimate that universal testing helps lower the death rate, in addition to the transmission rate, by allowing early detection and intervention. Everyday that India fails to expand its limited testing regime means vital time lost in controlling the pandemic’s effects.

Agarwal, at the press briefing, contradicted scientific evidence to say that “the mortality rate is very low.” He said the government is “fully aware of what needs to be done,” and added that, within India, “this is not an epidemic.” He recommended social distancing to mitigate the risk of contagion. By the latest counts, India has had 83 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with two resulting in death.

Roughly twenty-five percent of patients were admitted to intensive care, and 17 percent of patients required ventilator support. Of the 191, 54 died in hospital—28 percent—and 137 were discharged. The study showed that old age is a major factor in the virus proving fatal. The median time between them exhibiting symptoms and being discharged was 22 days. If these numbers are any indication of what awaits India, with any sizeable outbreak the burden on ICU beds and ventilators in the country will quickly outstrip availability.

Among the new things the study reported was data on the duration of viral shedding—the amount of time that an infected person can be infectious to others. The median duration of viral shedding in the surviving patients was 20 days—with a range from 8 to 37 days—and the virus was detectable until death in the 54 non-survivors. “The extended viral shedding noted in our study has important implications for guiding decisions around isolation precautions,” one of the lead authors noted. For a country like India that is just starting to mitigate infection from COVID-19, the challenge is enormous.

I am sorry if my sentence meant any 'score' related to some kind of sport. And yes may be I should have edited that word 'score' but forum rules doesn't allow.
