And we have people saying Pakistan has handled beyter

You are using one statistic and building your case around it.

Did you know Israel has 2000/30 cases/deaths per million compared to Pakistan's 330/7. This shows that countries with smaller populations will always have more cases/deaths per million. Pakistan will always have a higher number than India. Meanwhile total deaths in India are 5,500 compared to 1,500 in Pakistan.

The reason people are saying Pakistan has handled things better has been because of the strict lockdown that India imposed without prior notice that left hundreds of millions of people stranded. I think around 200 Indians have died just trying to get to their native village/town/city because of the lockdown. India is also expected to add the highest number of people to poverty in the world due to corona. You need to go through the "Migrant workers" thread on PP.

India is also expected to add the highest number of people to poverty in the world due to corona. You need to go through the "Migrant workers" thread on PP.

Also to add to this, Pakistan government through the Ehsaas program has released direct cash of Rs. 12,000 to 12 million poorest of the poor + 3 million those unemployed by corona. This was back in March and April - should be noted Pakistan got its first case on February 26th. Therefore, the rapid response of the government was commendable. Also the average family size in Pakistan is 5, so reaching 15 million people means 75 million of the poorest strata were reached. Not a bad effort imo. This was done to better equip them for the lockdown.

The Indian government announced a package of 20 lakh corore (I don't understand this unit of measurement :danish). Which is a massive package, but there are growing voices within India itself that the actual size of the package is WAY overstated, and that it hasn't even started reaching the people it is supposed to help.

So when people say Pakistan has handled the crisis better they are not just talking about one statistic regarding cases/deaths per million.

Also Brazil and Pakistan have nearly identical population size and they have nearly 30,000 deaths compared to our 1,500.

Long queues stretched outside railway stations in major cities in India on Monday as authorities eased a nationwide lockdown despite a record daily spike in coronavirus cases, AFP reports.

Rail services, apart from the movement of some essential cargo, were abruptly halted in late March ahead of efforts to contain the virus that froze almost all economic activity, putting millions out of work overnight.

But as New Delhi tried to get the economy moving again, officials reported 8,392 fresh coronavirus infections - the steepest daily increase yet - taking the toll to more than 190,000 cases with over 5,000 dead.

At least 149,000 passengers were expected to board trains on Monday as Indian Railways ramped up the number of journeys from 30 to 200.

Almost 2.6 million people are booked to travel in June on interstate trains - a network which normally carries over 20 million passengers a day, the railway ministry said.

It is not PTIs fault, they have only been in power for like 2 years only. It can be stated to be BJPs fault as they been in power for the last 5 years and were elected before that too.

completely agree that the previous parties had destroyed everything in pakistan, however you do have to say PTI havent increased it.

education and healthcare is what pakistan needs the most in terms of funding

It costs money when the looters left nothing behind then what is PTI meant to do with limited resources? It is easy to blame PTI.

Im not anti PTI, but you cannot say imran khan has done anything right, he keeps talking about corruption in his speeches but no change in any policy other than plant a tree

India records biggest daily spike yet
India registered a new record daily spike on Monday with 8,392 fresh infections.

This means the country now has more than 190,000 cases, including 5,394 deaths, according to data from the health ministry.

India has seen a succession of record single day cases over the past few days.

On Saturday, more than 8,000 new cases were reported just as India announced new relaxations in its lockdown.

Unfortunately whether we want to or not, both India and Pakistan will have to adhere to herd immunity. There is no other choice. Massive populations and a sea of poor people does not allow us to lockdown for too long.

India approves emergency use of remdesivir to treat COVID-19 patients

BENGALURU (Reuters) - India’s government said on Tuesday it has approved Gilead Sciences Inc’s antiviral drug remdesivir for emergency use for five doses in treating COVID-19 patients.

Remdesivir, which is administered intravenously in hospital, is the first drug to show improvement in COVID-19 patients in formal clinical trials and is at the forefront of the battle against COVID-19, which has no approved treatment or vaccine.

The drug was granted emergency use authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last month and has received approval by Japanese health regulators. The drug is being administered in some countries under compassionate use rules.

“(Remdesivir) approved on June 1 under emergency use with condition for five dose administration,” the Drugs Controller General of India said in an email statement.

The approval comes a day after the U.S. drugmaker reported that remdesivir showed modest benefit in patients with moderate COVID-19 given a five-day course, while those who received it for 10 days in the study did not fare as well.

The drug has been approved for the treatment of adults and children with severe COVID-19, the Indian Express newspaper reported bit.ly/3cpFces on Tuesday, citing sources.

The regulator has decided against extending the use of the drug to 10 days, based on existing evidence presented to it at the time of approval, according to the paper.

Gilead did not respond to an email seeking further details.

The company signed non-exclusive licensing pacts last month with five generic drugmakers based in India and Pakistan, including Cipla Ltd and Jubilant Life Sciences Ltd, to expand supply of the drug.

As of Tuesday, India has 198,706 cases of coronavirus and has recorded 5,598 deaths, health ministry data showed https://www.mohfw.gov.in.

Governments are racing to bolster supplies of remdesivir, with European and South Korean authorities vying for the potential COVID-19 treatment.

india will overtake italy by this saturday, good to see deaths not majorly increasing- keeping it low

India's coronavirus cases cross 200,000, peak still weeks away

India's coronavirus infections have crossed 200,000, the health ministry said, and a peak could still be weeks away in the world's second most populous country.

Cases jumped by 8,909 over the previous day in one of the highest single-day spikes, taking the tally to 2,07,615. Six other nations, from the United States, to the United Kingdom and Brazil, have a higher caseload.

Delhi reduces quarantine for asymptomatic arrivals

Those arriving in Delhi, India's capital, will now need to quarantine themselves for seven days instead of 14.

The reduced home quarantine will apply to those arriving via flights, trains and buses, reported local media.

The change in rules comes just as Delhi witnessed a rise in cases this week as lockdown relaxations kicked in, including the reopening of salons and barbershops.

The capital has reported more than 23,000 cases so far and the city has over a 100 containment zones.

Meanwhile India's death toll crossed 6,000 on Thursday as its total tally of infections jumped beyond 200,000, according to health ministry data.

9000 cases a day.

In a couple of days, we are going to overtake Italy.

With UK not being too far which actually had one of the WORST responses for Covid.

It's shocking how this happened when we had a headstart in terms of time compared to Europe and USA.

But then I keep forgetting one thing...

We are ruled by BJP and Modiji.

And that means...

Chahe jo bhi ho....

Ownage tho hona hi hai.

No wonder medical experts are slamming this dude like no tomorrow.

There are no secrets in the tightly packed lanes of Dharavi, India's largest slum. Everyone knows when an alcoholic husband turns violent, when children are scolded or when a family has its television turned up too loud.

So, news that someone had been hospitalised with the new coronavirus rocketed through the one square mile (2.5 square kilometres) that is home to around a million of Mumbai's poorest residents.

Dharavi has had more than 1,800 confirmed COVID-19 cases, and is among Mumbai's most affected pockets.

The caseload in the city - known for Bollywood and the country's most important stock exchange - stood at more than 41,000 on Thursday, and has overwhelmed the under-funded health system.

Mumbai and elsewhere in Maharashtra state in central India account for the largest share of the country's more than 210,000 confirmed infections, of which more than 104,000 have recovered. India has recorded about 6,000 deaths.

The rate of infection and the loss of life have been relatively small compared to the United States, United Kingdom and other hard-hit countries. But epidemiologists say India is still weeks away from peak coronavirus transmission.

Born and bred in Dharavi, Kunal Kanase watched authorities ignore everyday disasters, like overflowing sewers and domestic violence. He knew better than to wait for help.

The 31-year-old student and community activist hounded government helplines trying to get authorities to quarantine the neighbour's family. Unable to get through, he tweeted at the Mumbai police, who quickly came to take the man's family to a quarantine centre.

"I used to teach his two children and felt good for the family since they were relatively safer now," he said from the tiny two-room apartment he shares with his parents and younger brother.

Kanase is among many unsung heroes working to protect some of India's most vulnerable people from the ravages of the coronavirus and the economically devastating nationwide lockdown that has left millions unable to feed themselves.

When a woman who lives just two houses - less than 10 feet (3 metres) away - from Kanase became sick with COVID-19, he once again tried to notify authorities. He was unsuccessful and no one ever came to test or isolate the six other members of the woman's household.

Kanase would watch as health workers scrambled to stem the outbreak, suiting up to disinfect the squalid lanes and flying drones over the shanty town to surveil people's movements.

Dharavi is known to the world as the setting of the 2008 Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.

Set between busy train tracks and the heavily polluted Mithi River, which separates the slum from Mumbai's modern skyscrapers, the neighbourhood is a maze of tiny alleys, each one full of scores of people, many living in tin shacks.

Families or groups of migrant workers often pile into a single room. Hardly anyone has a private bathroom.

Without reliable running water, the most worrying concern is sanitation. The neighbourhood was able to avoid another disaster when it was spared damage from a cyclone that hit Mumbai on Wednesday.

Kiran Dighavkar, a Mumbai official who is overseeing medical workers and volunteers in Dharavi, said his staff is focused on cleaning the neighbourhood's 500 toilet complexes. Each is visited by at least 1,000 people a day.

"These people have to come out twice a day, for food and to use the toilets. So you can imagine how tough it is to practise social distancing," Dighavkar said.

Kanase and his team at Dharavi Diary, a group of young leaders who work to improve conditions in the slum, have been working to help those affected by the pandemic, handing out bags of rice, flour, cooking oil and sugar - enough to feed a family for two weeks.

But they lack the resources to provide for everyone and often must filter the needy from the neediest.

Each day, the slum's poorest - often migrant workers originally from elsewhere in the country - line the main street waiting for food handouts from Dharavi Diary and other volunteers, groups and government agencies.

India's poor - in Dharavi and the rest of India - have borne the brunt of the nationwide lockdown, which finally began to ease this week. Many migrant workers fled cities for their native villages in the countryside rather than risk starvation, sometimes walking for hundreds of miles (kilometres).

For Kanase, however, the pandemic has highlighted how even in hardship this tightly knit community can come together to aid each other.

"I live in Dharavi and I am proud of it," he said.

New Delhi: The resignation of six MLAs has delivered a huge blow to the Congress ahead of the June 19 Rajya Sabha polls and has making it difficult for the party to win more than one of the state's four seats.

The BJP, with 103 members in the 182-member state assembly, can easily win two of the four Rajya Sabha seats. The party has fielded a third candidate, Narhari Amin, a former Congress leader, and it is likely to be a close fight.

Lol at Gujarat being model state. Just like most of his fekuisms, Gujarat has some of India's worst human resource indices. And you very well know the kind of religious bigotry which prevails here.

Most of FDI it's been promised during so-called vibrant Gujarat summits have just been hogwash.

India's top bureaucrats hit by coronavirus as cases spike

A top Indian civilian defence official has tested positive for coronavirus and is in home quarantine, government officials said on Thursday, as the daily rise in infections hits a new high.

India’s cases reached 216,919 after 9,304 new cases were reported over the previous day, the health ministry said. The densely packed Burcities of Delhi and Mumbai are seeing a spike in infections as the government lifts a lockdown imposed in March.

India has reported 6,075 deaths due to the virus.

Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar is the highest ranking official to have tested positive for the virus that has also affected officials in the finance, foreign and law ministries based in a sprawling set of buildings in central Delhi.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, leading the response to an ongoing military standoff with China at their disputed Himalayan border, worked from home after Kumar’s test results came back positive, a defence source said.

It was not immediately clear if Singh had undergone a test. At least four finance ministry employees have been infected.

About three dozen staff in the defence, finance and law ministries that came in contact with infected staff have been advised to go on mandatory quarantine, the officials said.

“We have asked some of them to go on a compulsory 14-day home quarantine, then they will have to get tested before joining back,” one official said. Meetings in conference rooms have been cancelled and officials have been encouraged to minimise physical interaction.

Some officials at key departments such as national security and foreign affairs continued to work from the office even when the lockdown was first imposed, and more were asked to attend later as the curbs were eased.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a virtual summit with his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison from his official residence.

Criticism has grown that Modi’s lockdown of 1.3 billion people has failed to control the epidemic while it destroyed thousands of jobs.

“You have definitely decimated the economy. You flattened the wrong curve. It is not the infection curve, it is the GDP curve. This is what we have ended (up) with, the worst of both worlds,” Rajiv Bajaj, managing director of Bajaj Auto, said.

UN rights chief alarmed by clampdown on press freedom in India

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet has expressed alarm over the clampdown on freedom of expression in India and 11 other countries of the Asia-Pacific region, during the coronavirus crisis.

In a statement issued in Geneva on Wednesday, she said that any action the authorities take to stop the spread of false information must adhere to the principles of legality, necessity, proportionality. “In these times of great uncertainty, citizens have a right to voice their concerns,” she said.

“Medical professionals, journalists, human rights defenders and the general public must be allowed to express opinions on vitally important topics of public interest, such as the provision of health care and the handling of the health and socio-economic crisis, and the distribution of relief items”, she added.

From India to Vietnam and from Myanmar to the Philippines, Bachelet detailed how people had been fined, arrested or attacked for allegedly spreading misinformation online about Covid-19 or for criticising their government’s response.

In India, she said, several journalists and at least one doctor had been charged for their public criticism of the authorities’ response to the Covid-19. In Mumbai, the statement added, police went so far as to pass an order, prohibiting “any person inciting mistrust towards government functionaries and their actions taken in order to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus and thereby causing danger to human health or safety or a disturbance to the public tranquillity”.

While recognising the need for restricting misinformation or disinformation to protect public health – or incitement of hatred towards minority groups – this should not result in censorship, either purposeful or unintentional, Bachelet stressed.

“While governments may have a legitimate interest in controlling the spread of misinformation in a volatile and sensitive context, this must be proportionate and protect freedom of expression”, the high commissioner said.

Meanwhile, the Geneva-based Human Rights Council issued a statement appealing to states to ensure human rights were at the front and centre of the national responses to the pandemic and not sidelined while contending with the multiple ill-effects of the virus on their societies.

The statement, presented by Ambassador Elisabeth Tichy-Fisslberger, and adopted by the 47 member states of the human rights body, “calls upon states to ensure that all human rights are respected, protected and fulfilled while combating the pandemic and that their responses to the Covid-19 pandemic are in full compliance with their human rights obligations and commitments”.

India logs another record single-day spike

India registered more than 9,800 new cases of the coronavirus in another biggest single-day spike.

The health ministry said the total number of confirmed cases touched 226,770 with 6,348 deaths, 273 of them in the past 24 hours. The overall rate of recovery is around 48 percent.

Infections have surged in rural areas following the return of hundreds of thousands of migrant workers who left cities after the lockdown in late March.

So do you have any bright ideas then?

Countries with much more by way of resources have struggled with this, and you expect Narendra Modi to wave the magic wand? That too in a country like India where people have been rampantly violating the lockdown, and even attacking healthcare workers in places?

And then you have the migrants, who were forced to flee their villages for employment in the cities, thanks to sixty years of lopsided development and neglect of the Indian agricultural sector by a left-leaning political party whose name I'm even ashamed to type out.

And the so-called 'left leaning intellectual brigade' wants Narendra Modi, who has been in power for six years to find a solution overnight?

Sums up what's wrong with India really!

Where is that PM Cares fund money going? Where is that MSME loans B$? Have you even visited any bank and enquired about it? Just go and ask them lol. :inti

Ours has been most incompetent
and heartless establishment in handling coronavirus in entire world, easily. No amount of throwing in past 60 years will do any good neither to the bhakts or those hapless migrants and other affected segments.

The dodo has even exhausted his quota of surprise 8PM bakwaas monologues.

He's out of tricks for now.
He dare not do those garbage monologues. Instead of offering any solution to any issue, he just piles on his garbage he has on his unsuspecting bhakts.

I don't understand how can anyone hear even a word what he utters, whether it's his bakwaas monologues or his 'mann ki baat'.

And bhakts have conveniently forgotten to mention that all those developed countries have already started to flatten the curve.

On the other hand, what do we say about us despite imposing world's most stringent lockdown and allowing so many migrants to die just to satisfy fetish of someone.

Our health minister has been a non factor completely in this entire pandemic. Enough has already been said about his boss.

Commuters have been caught in traffic jams during strict checks by police at the Delhi-Ghaziabad border

Lol nothing like a Modi supporter smelling criticism of the supreme leader and jumping to his defence immediately to engage in whataboutism. If you’re going to blame previous governments then why vie for power in the first place? And it’s been 6+ years for Modi government at this point anyway.

It really is something. I think Pakistan has handled it worse and we also have a populist leader who atleast is being called out by many of his supporters and voters like me for this terrible response & strategy. But God forbid, modi ever be criticized for anything.

Lol, they want sanghis to have saddle of power for another 54 years and then assess them vis-a-vis Congress rule.

Just saw trump's tweet over covid in india and China
'If India and China do tests like us
There would be more cases than us' :trump
I mean common trump is always making mockery of india
Still modi will be licking his boots
I mean don't they see the war everthing is happening because of usa and usa is using india

in this pandemic times Indian leadership has handled situation well. it’s been very clear of dangers of virus from beginning and not just classifying it as a common flu. lockdowns followed in delaying the spike of cases and rapid testing happened. india is among top 5 in number of tests done.
health workers and their fraternity were applauded and respected.
Most households has resorted to hygienic ways of living now, which was a rarity before!

So it’s not same lackadaisical response or sobering situation as other global governments.

the current reality is first case was diagnosed in feb and it’s been 4 months. During this time it’s around 7000 deaths ie. average of 58 deaths a day.
coming to active cases, it’s an average of 1000 per day
You would expect this in second most populous nation in world.

Now fearing economic downturn lockdowns are relaxed. But as long as our international borders are contained india should be able to manage this strain of virus.

the migration situation is something that should have been handled better and a definite negative and hopefully with kickstart of economy it gets better

Ohoho, so this was your plan? To wait 75 days and then throw up your hands and ask a happy-go-lucky troll on a Pakistani forum what to do?

Here's betting you are the dim sort who fell hook, line and sinker to the 21-day Mahabharata propaganda, the ICMR no virus by May fairy tale, and the current "it's the states' fault, the central government has nothing to do with it".

I don't give a hoot about the Markaz, Migrants or Mario Balotelli. If the government admits that it has failed and tells us what they are planning to do next to dim 10,000+ cases daily, it would be a start.

For me at least. You on the other hand seem a blind worshipper, so blind that you have walked away from Indian shores altogether. YOLO!

Well said, Kejriwal. The paid stooge deserved nothing less.

Anyone who denies this is either blind or illiterate or both. Delhi's private hospitals never leave a chance to fleece helpless patients.

You'd have seen the restlessness in bhakts after this and them abusing Kejriwal left, right and centre on social media.

India on Sunday reported 9,971 new cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and 287 deaths, another highest spike, were recorded in the last 24 hours, the Union health ministry data showed.

With a tally of 246,628 infections, India is now the fifth worst-hit country in the world after the United States, Brazil, Russia and the United Kingdom, according to America’s Johns Hopkins University.

The surge in numbers comes a day before several public places, such as places of worship, shopping malls and restaurants, are scheduled to open on Monday.

This is also the fourth straight day India has seen more than 9,000 cases in a row.

There are 120,406 active Covid-19 cases and 6,929 people have been killed after contracting the highly infectious disease, according to the health ministry’s dashboard.

With 119,292 patients were cured of Covid-19, India’s recovery rate has now gone up to 48.36%.

According to available data, the recovery rate has nearly doubled from 24.5% on April 29.

A senior health ministry official has said the recovery rate indicates the country is managing the disease well and pointed out that the number of serious cases, requiring a ventilator, is also not very high.

Ten states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka and Bihar with the highest number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) account for 84% of the country’s tally and 95% of the fatalities, data shows.

Maharashtra has 82,968 Covid-19 cases and 2,969 people from the state have succumbed to the disease. Tamil Nadu has more than 30,000 people who have contracted the coronavirus disease and 251 have died.

The national capital of Delhi is the third worst-affected region with 27,654 patients and 761 fatalities. Gujarat is inching towards the 20,000-mark with 19,592 cases. It has reported the deaths of 1,219 people so far.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has ramped up testing capacity for Covid-19. The number of government testing labs has increased to 520, and the number of private labs testing for Covid-19 to 222 across the country from about 100 at the start of March.

“We have a target of increasing our (daily) testing capacity to two lakh by the end of June, and we are well on the path to achieve this. The testing capacity has been ramped up in no time and many more labs have been identified and are in the process of being approved for Covid testing,” Dr Rajnikant Srivastava, a spokesperson for ICMR, said.

The health ministry has released detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs) for public and semi-public premises where Covid-19 has a higher chance of spreading such as shopping malls, food courts, hotels and restaurants, places of worship and offices.

India sees another big jump as 9,971 new cases recorded in a day

India has reported 9,971 new coronavirus cases in another biggest single-day spike, a day before it prepares to reopen shopping malls, hotels and religious places after a 10-week lockdown.

India has now surpassed Spain as the fifth hardest-hit by the pandemic with 246,628 confirmed cases and 6,929 fatalities.

According to AP, New Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad are among the worst-hit cities in the country. Six of India’s 28 states account for 73 per cent of total cases.

Delhi reserves hospital beds for residents as cases surge

The city of New Delhi ordered many of its hospital beds to be reserved solely for residents of the Indian capital, as the number of COVID-19 infections continued to surge.

India on Sunday registered 9,971 new coronavirus cases, taking its tally to 246,628 cases, with 6,929 deaths. The case numbers now lag only the United States, Brazil, Russia, United Kingdom and Spain.

New Delhi city alone has registered more than 10 percent of total cases, making it the third worst-affected part of the country after the western state of Maharashtra, home to financial capital Mumbai, and southern Tamil Nadu state.

Meanwhile it's business as usual for motabhai.....

https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/ami...inst-coronavirus-2242200?pfrom=home-topscroll

New Delhi: Union minister Amit Shah today launched the BJP campaign for Bihar online, with a detailed recap of the Narendra Modi government's performance over the last six years -- from surgical strikes to the Ram temple in Ayodhya. He, however, claimed that the virtual address -- made necessary by the constraints of the coronavirus and the resulting lockdown -- had "nothing to do Bihar polls".

Even in these extremely grim times, he hasn't forgotten that he is a sanghi first whose sole aim is to capture power and not India's home minister.

Unfortunate Delhi has so many immigrants working for years, should they go back to get treatment?

Lacklustre response by states like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu .. it was very evident from start seeing the callous attitude of residents from these states especially TN. Even police were begging on roads to follow lockdown. hopefully they learn from other states and become more aware of dangers of virus.

Didn't this guy say He has no papers? How does he expect to prove his residence now?

Under the NPR and NRC, people will be asked to prove their citizenship. But 90% of people don’t have birth certificates to prove their citizenship. Will everyone be sent to the detention center?

India has not one good politician, absolute filth everyone from RSS,BJP to Congress AAP,communists .

If someone has lived in india for long time, they will have some papers related to date of birth or place of birth , property papers, utility bills or local municipal tax bills.
no one is specifically asking for birth certificates.
Your quoting of some random articles without even giving an iota of thought is so ludicrous

? What are you talking about I'm talking about Arvind Kejrival and how he said he has no papers to show Citizenship whereas now he is saying that "Delhi reserves hospital beds for residents during Covid".

India's Maharashtra state has more cases than China

India's western state of Maharashtra has recorded 85,975 cases so far - taking its tally beyond China's 84,191.

The state's capital city, Mumbai, accounts for most of that number - it has 48,774 confirmed cases.

India's financial hub is also one of the world's most crowded and densely populated cities. The virus has devastated the city's medical infrastructure, overwhelming its hospitals in weeks.

Maharashtra has also seen more deaths from Covid-19 than any other part of India - 2,969.

With more than 250,000 confirmed cases, India now has the fifth-highest number of cases in the world.

Two different things.
Papers asked by Feku's govt were mostly like birth certificates, certificates which provides proof of citizenship and papers issued decades ago. These papers/certificates are not easy to produce.
Where as in this case Kerji is asking for Aadhar cards and Voter Id cards.

Pathetic move from Kejriwal. In these desperate times, you can't insulate your health facilities from someone just because he/she belongs to some other state.

Should be challenged in court.

This is true. We don't have one good politician in country, everyone is just busy playing to the gallery and securing their vote bank.

Indian-administrated Kashmir reported more than 600 new cases in the past 24 hours, taking its tally over 4,000.

According to police records, more than 40 militants have been killed by Indian security forces since the lockdown began on 25 March.

The deaths have sparked protests, because officials have not been handing over the bodies to families, in order to prevent large funerals.

Locals have also been protesting because numerous homes - where militants often hide during the gunfights - have been damaged.

Officials say this has made it harder to enforce social distancing in the tense Muslim-majority valley, which has seen an armed insurgency against India since the late 1980s.

The chief minister of India's capital Delhi has said that state hospitals will now be reserved only for residents of the city.

Arvind Kejriwal's announcement came amid allegations that hospitals are refusing to admit new patients.

Delhi has witnessed a surge of infections in recent days. It currently has 27,000 cases with 761 deaths.

India has a total of 256,611 confirmed Covid-19 cases, the fifth-highest number in the world.

A five-member expert committee comprising top doctors told local reporters that Delhi could record 100,000 Covid-19 cases by the end of June if we follow the trend we are looking at, which "suggests that the cases are getting doubled every 14-15 days".

The news comes even as India has taken steps to further relax its stringent lockdown - malls, restaurants, temples and offices are open from Monday.

What are Delhi residents saying?

There have been a number of reports that people with Covid-like symptoms are being turned away from hospitals in the capital.

One report on local news site Scroll detailed the experience of one man who drove his mother to four hospitals, but was turned away from all of them.

Many others have tweeted about their own experiences trying to get help for family members.

The Delhi government's smartphone app to track available hospital beds has also added to the confusion.

The app showed vacancies at several city hospitals which then told news channel NDTV that they actually did not have any space for new patients.

What has the Delhi government said?

Mr Kejriwal reacted by accusing hospitals of profiteering.

"We will not tolerate this mischief. Give us a few days. We are at it. I am warning those who think they can do black marketing of beds. We will not spare you," he said on Saturday.

A day later, he announced beds would be reserved for residents of the city.

"We have decided that the 10,000 beds under the Delhi government will be kept for residents," he said. However, hospitals under the federal government will be available to patients from other states as well.

Shortly after, on Sunday evening, the state government released a set of documents that a person would have to provide in order to be treated at state facilities. These include voter ID cards, and electricity, water or telephone bills among others.

Mr Kejriwal added that Delhi would not open hotels and banquet halls on Monday, as they could be "converted into hospitals if the need arises".

I'm not a Modi supporter but the reason why Indians voted for him was because he was the best option. People were fed up of the misrule and incompetence of the previous governments.

And the damage caused by 60+ years of misrule and incompetence cannot be fixed in 6 years, at least in a country like India. One has to get real.

Like it or not, he is the best India has. Either the whiners have to accept it or provide other options.

Has Modi's response to the COVID-19 been good? Perhaps not. Is he perfect? Definitely not. Would any other party have been better in this situation? Given how they have been conducting themselves over the years, I wouldn't give them the benefit of doubt.

Malls and temples reopened in several cities across India on Monday despite the country recording a record daily number of new coronavirus infections, with the pandemic expected to ravage the country for weeks to come, AFP reports.

After a 10-week lockdown, the government has risked lifting some restrictions in a bid to ease the devastating blow to the economy dealt by the coronavirus.

But the number of new cases rose by 9,983 to 256,611, according to government figures announced on Monday, putting the country of 1.3 billion on course to overtake Britain and Spain among nations with the highest number of infections.

The reported death toll of 7,135 is much lower than reported in other badly hit countries, but the epidemic is only expected to peak locally in July, according to health experts.

Still, in the capital Delhi, shopping malls, restaurants, temples and mosques were allowed to reopen for the first time since 25 March. The response was tentative, however, and only a trickle of people returned to some places of worship.

Businessman Mohit Budhiraja, wearing a mask and carrying sanitiser, went to his local temple in eastern Delhi for the first time since the lockdown.

“It felt like something was missing when I couldn’t come to the temple for all these weeks,” he said. “I hope things improve, but now I will come every day.”

Many temples set up sanitisation tunnels at their entrances and barred worshippers from bringing offerings.

“People are having their temperature tested twice before they get in,” said Ravindra Goel, a trustee of the Jhandewalan temple, one of the oldest in Delhi. The 400-year-old Jama Masjid mosque – one of the biggest in India – planned to allow the faithful in just three times a day instead of the usual five.

Delhi is one of India’s worst coronavirus hotspots, accounting for more than 27,600 cases and 761 deaths – although the real figures may be much higher.

Mumbai, which accounts for around a fifth of India’s cases and where hospitals have been overrun, was more cautious. Roadside shops were allowed to reopen, but malls, restaurants and hair salons remained shuttered.

The Indian government says the tough lockdown it ordered on 25 March has limited the spread of the coronavirus. But it is now braced for a major hit to the economy, with millions of labourers now jobless.

Rating agencies have said the economy could contract by more than 5% this year, after average growth of about 7% over the past decade.

Funnily enough that is the same line of reasoning from Imran Khan supporters on here Or even Donald Trump fans, no other alternative, damage done by previous regimes, no credible opposition etc.

Anyways Modi and to a lesser extent Trump have taken some bold moves controversial or not, did they work or not is a different debate but they did try to make some radical moves which at times backfired and at times was appreciated.

They haven’t given empty rhetoric. They made a call and come what they stood by it. I think that’s what the public wants to see. One way or the other a leader who makes a decision and sticks to it if you like it or not.

The world has had enough of politicians who give the same old roundabout answers and same old PC talk.

thats where we differ.

Speaking generally. No one is asking to fix all the problems but in six years there should be enough evidence that the country is somewhat on the right path. In Modi's case, most of India's economic indicators have declined and i don't think anyone can argue that on a social level, India is the most divisive its been in years. Kashmir has more international attention than at any point in decades And you keep hearing news such as that of SC judges who recently retired and gave decisions in your favor being given political positions.

But obv its upto Indians. Im just saying what I see from outside.

Hearing that situation getting very critical in Mumbai and it may soon turn into an epicenter. I hope people take precautions.

Look the historical decisions taken under Modi that were never touched before will obviously always be divisive. I am not getting into either the welfare schemes or on the flip side the usual hype about lynchings etc. I am just going by the big decisions made.

Demonetization- Intent vs Implementation. Sure debate exists, conceptually there a lot of things to like as well. However gutsy radical move would you agree? Forget about how it was implemented
or the nitpicking either ways . It was a big decision.

Ram Mandir/ Babri Masjid- A issue that has been going on forever. There were riots, bomb blasts etc etc but the issue is now resolved. Hindus seem happy and from what I heard the Muslims seem
Content with the compensation. 30 years of blood but not a single bleep from either side after the final decision because everyone seems content.

Triple Talaq and Sabarimala- Both sensitive communal topics but right decision made from a humanitarian/ equal rights perspective.

Article 370- from a Pakistan perspective I understand you having issues with it. Absolutely understand. However don’t you think from an Indian perspective it was the right move? Jammu & Kashmir was one single entity where as the freedom movement/terrorism/insurgency whatever you want to call it was concentrated on one specific area. So from India’s perspective it was right to bifurcate it. Legalities, international law and ethics surrounding it is again a different debate.

CAA/NRC- how is having a central register a bad idea especially for our part of the world? Again you can debate the communal aspect of it but again this was a hot button issue that was proposed.

Forget my justification for it or forget the bias you may have against it. Would you agree these were risky and sensitive decisions which most politicians wouldn’t touch?

So tell me again, how is Modi a passive player not taking initiatives.

One thing I will agree, Modi needs to have a better team to implement these decisions and he needs to be held responsible for it but you can’t question his intent in trying
