Coronavirus in India

There are many variants of Covid which have left Doctors guessing. The day before i was about to get discharged. A patient came with good oxygen percentage , had no chest trouble. But he was detected COVID positive with consistent high fever. His issue persisted depite given every major medicine.

Have encountered such patients. They usually respond to high grade antibiotics as they have acquired secondary infections.

With most people prescribed oral steroids at home. This is a possibility.

I didn't take any antibiotics. Fever was high but it did respond to paracetamol.

The fever was bit different than other fevers though. It was more of burning than feeling of hot. It's like someone poured acid in your hand, feet, face and the burning is occurring (I had an accident with concentrated sulphuric acid in HS where it fall in my face so I kinda know that sensation).

It went on for one month like a malaria where it will come and go in particular time of the day (eah day).

I got infected in first week of October and probably by mid Nov, the relapse of the fever tend to stop.

Steroids have been playing havoc with blood sugar but its benefit outweighs the problems.

Sky News understands that the Indian delegation to the G7 meeting is self-isolating after two positive covid-19 cases

Home Secretary Priti Patel met with India's foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Tuesday as the pair signed a new Uk-India migration agreement.

However, Sky News understands as Dr Jaishankar has not tested positive, Ms Patel will not be self-isolating.

Was made aware yesterday evening of exposure to possible Covid positive cases. As a measure of abundant caution and also out of consideration for others, I decided to conduct my engagements in the virtual mode. That will be the case with the G7 Meeting today as well.
— Dr. S. Jaishankar

He posted on Twitter on Wednesday morning: "Was made aware yesterday evening of exposure to possible Covid positive cases.

Mental health issues another challenge overworked healthcare workers face

PPEs have added to the woes of health care workers as the mercury continues to rise over the 40-degree C mark at many places in the country

Gauri Gupta has been working for 14 hours daily at the emergency ward of a hospital in Dehradun as the surge in Covid-19 cases continues to increase the workload of doctors like her across the country. Apart from her struggles of being constantly in personal protection equipment kit (PPE), Gupta has helplessly seen patients dying that left her traumatised.

“...a few weeks ago, a 22-year-old man was admitted as an emergency case. His oxygen levels were drastically dropping...as doctors, we always need to feel hopeful and give hope to the patient’s family. Deep down, I knew that he could not be saved but we never gave up. We provided him with all the essentials, yet could not save him,” said Gupta. “When I had to break the news, I was shaking and had to mentally prepare myself to talk to his mother, who was very hopeful. I broke down as I told his mother and locked myself up in my chamber...” Gupta said she felt helpless over her failure.

"You Don't Stop Elections In A Place Like India": S Jaishankar Amid Covid

New Delhi: Amid global criticism over political campaigns when Covid cases were exploding in the country, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has offered this justification - "You don't stop elections in a place like India". He also describes Covid as a shared problem and a global crisis.
"When a pandemic hits hard there are arguments, questions. People have spoken of elections, we are a democratic country, you don't stop elections in a place like India," Mr Jaishankar told news agency ANI in an interview.

"The only time we stopped elections was an era ... some decades ago ... when I was very much younger where none of us really wants to be associated with that kind of memory," he said, apparently referring to the Emergency of 1975 enforced by the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government.

Mr Jaishankar dismissed criticism over elections held amid Covid as "point scoring" that needed pause.

"We are a very argumentative society. There will be this kind of point scoring - somebody will say this crowd contributed to it, someone will say that crowd contributed to it. Somebody will say an individual or leader A didn't wear a mask here. Somebody will say Leader B didn't wear a mask there. In my view, we need to put a pause to it," said the Foreign Minister.

Political leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed hugely-attended rallies as elections were held in five states in March and April, when a deadly second surge hit India.

The campaigns continued even when over 3 lakh cases were reported daily and several states reported a shortage of vaccines, oxygen, medicines and hospital beds, which led to more questions about the government's priorities.

Mr Jaishankar was also asked about critics' observation that India was exporting vaccines at a time cases were rising, and is now depending on foreign aid.

"As I said COVID is a shared problem. Now look at last year when it came or even this year when it came to medicines, we gave hydroxychloroquine, paracetamol, we gave to the US, we gave to Singapore, we gave to European countries, we sent medical team to Kuwait, we gave vaccines to some countries. Now what you describe as aid we describe as friendship as support," he said.

According to Mr Jaishankar, it was "not accurate" to project the situation as India accepting aid.

"I think this is to my mind not accurate way of projecting the situation," he added.

Really sad to see someone as intelligent as him has become a full time bigot in the company of many more bigots.

So even if lakhs are dying, you don't stop elections, let people die! Madras HC should have directed its ire at these bigots and not EC which was just a stooge of these bigots and just following the orders from higher ups!

Apparently not wearing masks is also ok with him, provided its done by his masters!

And as per him, this is just argumentative and point scoring! Well done bigots!

Grieving Daughter Jumps On Father's Body During Covid Crematation In Rajasthan

Barmer, Rajasthan: In a tragic incident, a 34-year-old woman sustained severe burns in Rajasthan after she jumped on the funeral pyre of her father during his cremation. Her father had died after contracting COVID-19, police said today.
Damodardas Sharda, 73, died at a hospital in Rajasthan's Barmer district on Tuesday due to COVID-19, they said.

While Sharda was being cremated, the youngest of his three daughters, Chandra Sharda, suddenly jumped on the pyre, the police told news agency Press Trust of India, adding that although she was pulled out of it by people around, she sustained around 70 per cent burn injuries.

She was taken to a hospital nearby and later, referred to a hospital in Jodhpur for treatment, they told Press Trust of India.

"Damodardas Sharda had three daughters. His wife died some time ago. The youngest of his three daughters jumped on the funeral pyre," Station House Officer, Kotwali police station, Prem Prakash said.

Damodardas Sharda, a resident of Barmer, was admitted to the district hospital on Sunday after testing positive for COVID-19. He died on Tuesday.

The police officer said the youngest daughter had insisted to go to crematorium for the last rites.

Saw this video. It’s really sad. People really need to stop underplaying and understand the severity of situation.

That was a disturbing and a very sad watch.

How can the people absolve this current government ? They have badly mismanaged this crisis.
There may still have been a crisis even if they did prepare because it’s clear India’s health care system has been underfunded for many years but this has obviously become much worse because the BJP central government didn’t prepare for the worst outcomes, along with the local governments.

They should be held accountable but don’t see it happening, barring 1 or 2 news outlets like NDTV and even they try to play both sides.

India breaks its own record of highest number of Coronavirus cases in a day in any country in the world since the pandemic began with over 406,628 new cases in the past 24 hours

BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday hit out at the Centre over its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hand over the "conduct of this war" to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Echoing recent reports, the lawmaker contended that a third wave that targeted children might soon create fresh panic in the country.

"India will survive Coronavirus Pandemic as it did Islamic invaders and British Imperialists. We could face one more wave that targets children unless strict precautions now are taken. Modi should therefore delegate the conduct of this war to Gadkari," he tweeted.

Responding to follow-up remarks, Swamy noted that this was not a critique of Narendra Modi and that the "PMO is a department not the Prime Minister himself". Delegating, he added, was not a sign of being incapable.

https://www.freepressjournal.in/ind...elegate-war-against-covid-19-to-nitin-gadkari

Swamy had to dress up his statement with a reference to Islamic invaders of course....

What makes this BJP government even more frustrating than they visibly are, is the fact that they actually have capable people who are being sidelined because of the insecurity of Modi-Shah.

Almost zero chance Gadkari will be given a role, as an efficient performance from him will give Modi the jitters.

I've said this before - I don't care that Gadkari might be corrupt (as if Shah isn't) or that he's from the RSS. At least he's competent and knows where to draw the line with his RSS ideologies.

Why no transparency: Rahul Gandhi asks govt on foreign Covid-19 aid

"Questions about Covid foreign aid: What all supplies has India received? Where are they? Who is benefitting from them? How are they allocated to states? Why no transparency? Any answers, GOI," he asked in a tweet.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday raised questions of “transparency” in foreign aid received by India in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic, and demanded answers from the government.

“Questions about Covid foreign aid: What all supplies has India received? Where are they? Who is benefitting from them? How are they allocated to states? Why no transparency? Any answers, GOI,” he asked in a tweet.

The Congress has been seeking transparency on Covid relief received from abroad and has asked the government to make public details about what has been received from where and how it has been used.

In another tweet, Gandhi alleged the Modi government has been a “complete failure” in handling the Covid-19 pandemic, vaccination and employment to people.

“Neither vaccine, nor employment. People are facing the brunt of coronavirus. The Modi government has completely failed,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.

He cited a media report to say that the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) has claimed that in April alone 75 lakh people lost their jobs, and that unemployment rate will touch eight per cent in the country, the highest in the last four months.

Now he can say all this and use his IIT degree for alleged scientific credibility. But this is what this clown wrote in Feb this year.

Face it, world. India has tackled Covid better than most advanced nations

:uak

A Tamil movie ‘Master’ broke opening day records with literally millions of people watching it in theatres last week.
This scientific fraud thinks that the effects of millions watching a movie a week back will show up immediately.

It would do the world some good if it gave India some credit on handling the virus, and learnt something from us as well. The only countries more successful than India are authoritarian, undemocratic regimes, where one cannot even criticise the government so it is also not possible to know the true impact of their coronavirus response policies.

So how did we do so well? I am no expert, but here are some plausible reasons.

1) Indians have developed herd immunity. For instance, a serological survey in Delhi showed over half of Delhi’s population has Covid antibodies and, hence, probably have already had the virus.

2) This also suggests that Indians have better immunity than people in Western countries. Whether it is because our kids grow up playing in mud, or we eat some special herbs and spices, or we eat street food or we get more sun or we have lesser obesity rates is something the experts have to figure out.

Other reasons might include

3) A natural instinct amongst Indians to stay safe, knowing that they have nobody coming to their rescue if they do get the disease and

4) The initial strict lockdown creating a huge awareness about the disease, making people take precautions seriously. Of course, some reasons may well remain unknown and it might just be a blessing from God that we didn’t see the kind of mayhem seen in the West.

Sri Lanka bans travellers from India; 3980 deaths reported

Sri Lanka on Thursday announced that all arrivals from India will be banned with immediate effect due to the record rise in COVID-19 cases in the neighbouring country. Several countries like the UK, the UAE, Australia and Singapore have already banned travellers from India as well as other South Asian countries.

Continuing the surge, India on Thursday reported 4,12,262 new cases and 3,980 deaths in the last 24 hours. India had become the first country in the world to register over 4 lakh infections in a single day on April 30, when it reported 4.08 lakh infections. The new infections have pushed India’s caseload to over 2.06 crore while active cases stand at 35.66 lakh. With no respite in the surge of new coronavirus infections, the Kerala government has announced a lockdown in the state from May 8 to May 16.

Tejasvi Surya ‘communalises’ Covid fight by accusing Muslim volunteers of beds allotment racket

Bengaluru: A day after he alleged a Covid-19 bed allocation scam in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya landed in a fresh row Wednesday after a video surfaced on social media showing the MP suggesting that 17 Muslim volunteers of the BBMP’s south zone unit may be responsible for the lack of beds in the city.

The video shows Surya being present in the BBMP’s south zone war room and reeling off the names of 17 Muslim volunteers before asking an official on what basis they were hired.

Surya was accompanied by his uncle and Basavanagudi MLA Ravi Subramanya, Chickpet MLA Uday Garudachar and Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy. They are all seen accusing officials in the war room of being partial to Muslims.

On his part, Surya can be heard seeking the qualifications of the 17 Muslim volunteers and then objecting to a women BBMP officer explaining that the 17 were sent by a recruiting agency.

“Which is that agency? Call them now. I want to ask them,” he can be heard saying.

In between, Surya’s uncle, Ravi Subramanya, can be heard saying, “Is this a madrassa?”

Surya can also be heard saying if “they (Muslim volunteers) were recruited for a corporation or a madrasa”.

The BBMP south zone war room has 205 members, of whom 17 were Muslims.

The MP faced flak as soon as the video went viral on social media.

Congress leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah tweeted urging Surya to seek treatment for the “communal virus in his brain”.

“Tejasvi Surya, why are you extending your dirty habit of dragging caste/religion to everything from the food we eat to human life, even to the Corona disease? The communal virus in your brain is more dangerous than coronavirus. Please seek treatment for it,” Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Even during these times, this communal bigot can't leave his communal instincts behind. Well, he can't help it. Its his USP and that's why he was chosen to represent Bangalore South constituency.

No wonder with such bigots being in charge of Bangalore, it is reeling under such record number of cases.

I don't think anyone sickens me in my city more than this 3rd grade bootlicker of Modi. It's amazing that he's touted as a young leader of New India who made it on his own and a shining example against nepotism. The BJP fans actually have spread this to the point where people keep repeating this fake story. Reality is, his uncle is a sitting BJP MLA.

Apart from diverting from the humiliation of Bengal and the terrible management of Covid and its vaccination drive, I think this particular incident has more sinister roots. There are these Muslim groups in the city who've been helping bury and cremate Covid victims in cases where the families have abandoned the dead person. This includes many Hindu Covid victims. The Muslim volunteers even conduct the funeral rites in the Hindu traditions. Videos of this have been circulating for a while and been garnering appreciation.

So Surya got to work.

UP: Oximeters, thermal scanners for cows in gaushalas

Amid the surge in coronavirus cases, the Uttar Pradesh government is providing oximeters and thermal scanners for cows housed in the state's 'gaushalas'.

A recent press release from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's office also said the state government has issued instructions to set up help desks in every district for the welfare of cows, taking forward its cow protection agenda.

The government has issued instructions that all cowsheds must strictly follow the COVID-19 protocol, and made wearing masks and frequent thermal screening mandatory there.

It is providing thermal scanners and oximeters, apparently to detect early symptoms in animals of COVID-19, which authorities said Thursday had killed 353 people in the state over the past 24 hours.

There are reports of hospitals turning away patients and long waits at crematoriums at several places in the state as it battles the second wave of the pandemic.

The press release on cowsheds said the 'gaushalas' will be 'equipped with all the medical equipment such as oximeters and thermal scanners for cows and other animals as well'.

'In view of the current Covid situation, a total of 700 help desks for the welfare of cows have been set up across the districts of the state. With this, 51 oximeters and 341 thermal scanners have also been provided to ensure better animal care and testing,' it said.

The statement said stray cows in large numbers are being given shelter at the 'gaushalas' due to the efforts of the chief minister.

The government is also rapidly increasing the number of the existing cow shelters to deal with the stray cattle menace, it said.

Giving overall figures, it said 5,268 cow protection centres have ensured the well-being of 5,73,417 animals so far in the state.

Apart from these, there are larger cow sanctuaries as well in the state.

humble pie, hand on heart apology :))

Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya, in the eye of a storm for having communalised the bed allocation operation of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) when the city is in the throes of its worst outbreak of Covid-19, apparently went back to the Bengaluru south zone war room yet again on Thursday. This time to apologise.

This came hours after a two-day-old video of Surya went viral. In the video, Surya is seen storming into the war room along with four MLAs from his parliamentary constituency, reading out 16 names of Muslim employees, while another MLA asks if they are running a helpline or a madrasa.

Fact checks over the claims that these 16 members of the war room were involved in a bed allocation scam led to a deadend, as only one of these 16 was part of the team of bed allocation — and he had joined it temporarily just last week to replace another employee who had a personal emergency at home. The other 15 — most of them young graduates in their early twenties — were members of other teams involved in indexing, home isolation supervision and discharge of patients who finished quarantine period.

“My employees called me to say that Surya had visited the war room. He apparently told them ‘I have nothing personal against any of you. If anyone or any community is hurt emotionally by my visit, I apologise for that. I wanted to probe the bed allocation scam which had come to my notice, but if my actions had hurt anyone, please accept my apologies,’ he told the staff," said Shivu Naik, project manager of the Crystal Infosystems and Services, the agency that had hired and delegated manpower for the hurried war rooms of the BBMP.

Naik further said that these 16 were part of a 212-member team deployed at BBMP for various tasks — and there was no reason why they were targeted.

“We have kept them away from the war room tasks now, because of the allegations, but I have told them that the minute the police enquiry clears you, we will reinstate you either here or in any of the other projects we send staff for. But even otherwise, all our staff were anguished and scared, after such a sudden visit and the issue turning political. Many of them have stayed away from work, it was in fact affecting all Covid-coordination the last two days. We have tried to reassure them that enquiries happen, those who have done nothing wrong have nothing to fear. But perhaps it was because work was suffering that Surya came again, we are not sure what prompted the second visit," Naik told News18.

The company had not hired Muslims in particular. It had deployed 212 members who were on their rolls for five kinds of tasks — indexing, home isolation, discharge team, bed allocation and helpline. Staff work on different shifts, in different wings. All 16 were never working together in any shift or any team. They were assigned tasks and shifts by the BBMP, not by the agency. They could be moved from one to another as well. Some of them have been working at the war room for a month, some others for just a week or even four days.

The south zone staff was apparently worried that since some were taken for prolonged police interrogation, the 16 members named were labelled as ‘terrorists’ in many social media posts; they thought they could be detained too for any reason. IAS officers of the BBMP came in to reassure them that they had nothing to fear — that BBMP must respond to those families suffering from Covid, and “filled them with confidence," Naik said.

Won't be surprised if the CM ordered this clown to go back and apologize or maybe it was just the general outrage.

lmao....caring for animals while having no regards for human life is funny and sad.

This dakkan Yogi filed cases against hospitals who said they have no oxygen.

The lowest of lowest class of jackass he is.

caring for animals and caring for humans are not exclusive to each other. Both can run in parallel. If the system is failing to address grievance of one sector, that doesn't mean caring for other sector becomes the laughable.

Both are separate subjects and should be treated as such.

But you already know that.

System hasn't failed, Modi government has: Sonia Gandhi on Covid-19 crisis

On the results of the recently concluded elections in four states and one Union territory, the party president said the Congress Working Committee will soon analyse the election outcome.

Amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic situation of the country, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday said the system has not failed as India has many strengths and resources. The Modi government has failed to constructively channelise those resources, Sonia Gandhi said at the virtual Congress Parliamentary Party meeting. On the results of the recently concluded elections in four states and one Union territory, the party president said the Congress Working Committee will soo analyse the election outcome.

Referring to the letters written to PM Narendra Modi by Manmohan Singh, Rahul Gandhi, the party president said all these helpful initiative have fallen on deaf ears as the government has made no meaningful response and continues to behave as if it alone has the answers.

It is not a "government versus us" battle but a battle between "Us versus corona", Sonia said adding that the Congress demands the meetings of the standing committees. "The situation brooks no delay. Tackling this crisis requires able, calm and visionary leadership. The nation is sinking under the weight of the Modi government’s indifference and incompetence. This is a time for us to steel ourselves and rededicate ourselves in the service of our people," Sonia Gandhi said.

Care for the human first, animals can come next. Humans are grapsing for oxygen and their life is more valuable.

Agreed.

All lives matter.

Why should only black lives matter?

Pathetic of blacks to make it about them.

Care for the human first, animals can come next. Humans are grapsing for oxygen and their life is more valuable.

I disagree. All lives are equal.

If I take Islamic perspective, Allah has created every life on earth. How you discriminate between HIS creations?

Maybe get the context first before getting all outraged like a snowflake liberal.

You are defo smarter than this.
I do not have much respect towards the people who will criticize the govt day and night for every little issues.

For every of his questions, I tried to explain with the limitations of the system and how govt may not have the ability or jurisdictions towards many complaints people have made here. There were also instances where it may benefit one sector but harm another sector.

The reply that I got was, "you are a bhakt". No argument whatsoever in the argument that I forwarded.

I find it more interesting to debate with even hard-core anti India Pakistani ppers because they atleast (tries to) understand the system and shows weaknesses accordingly based upon my own argument.

while some of my fellow Indian ppers will just post everyday, "bhakt, bhakt, bhakt".... like a broken record with no content.

Stop name-calling.

If you have a point to make, make it without getting personal.

I responded to a specific point of yours.

Not interested in getting into the long multi-thread argument you have with another poster.

Gandhi warns 'explosive' COVID wave threatens India and the world

India's main opposition leader Rahul Gandhi warned on Friday that unless the deadly second COVID-19 wave sweeping the country was brought under control it would decimate India as well as threaten the rest of the world.

In a letter, Gandhi implored Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prepare for another national lockdown, accelerate a country-wide vaccination programme and scientifically track the virus and its mutations.

Gandhi said the world's second-most populous nation had a responsibility in "a globalised and interconnected world" to stop the "explosive" growth of COVID-19 within its borders.

"India is home to one out of every six human beings on the planet. The pandemic has demonstrated that our size, genetic diversity and complexity make India fertile ground for the virus to rapidly mutate, transforming itself into a more contagious and more dangerous form," wrote Gandhi.

"Allowing the uncontrollable spread of the virus in our country will be devastating not only for our people but also for the rest of the world."

India's highly infectious COVID-19 variant B.1.617 has already spread to other countries such as Britain, forcing nations to cut or restrict movements from India.

In the past week, India has reported an extra 1.5 million new infections and record daily death tolls as its hospitals run out of beds and medical oxygen. Since the start of the pandemic, it has reported 21.49 million cases and 234,083 deaths. It currently has 3.6 million active cases.

Modi has been widely criticised for not acting sooner to suppress the second wave, after religious festivals and political rallies drew tens of thousands of people in recent weeks and became "super spreader" events.

His government has also been criticised for lifting social restrictions too soon following the first wave and for delays in the country's vaccination programme, which medical experts say is India's only hope of controlling the second COVID-19 wave.

While India is the world's biggest vaccine maker, it is struggling to produce and distribute enough doses to stem the wave of COVID-19.

Modi has stressed that Indian states must keep up vaccination rates. Although the country has administered at least 157 million vaccine doses, its rate of inoculation has fallen sharply in recent days.

"After having achieved a rate of around 4 million a day, we are now down to 2.5 million per day due to vaccine shortages," Amartya Lahiri, an economics professor at University of British Columbia was quoted as saying in the Mint newspaper.

"The 5 million a day target is the lower bound of what we have to aim for, since even at that rate, it will take a year for us to get everyone two doses. The situation unfortunately is very grim."

Lockdowns will not achieve anything. Its brainless and only hurts the livelihood of people in these already stressful times.

Vaccinating people is the only way to go.

Vaccinating people is the only way to go.

It can give breathing space to collapsing health care and allow us time to ramp up the facilities

It was a major factor in first wave handling

Ofcourse we need to learn from that and make provisions for daily earners

Vaccination can go on hand in hand

He denies he apologized! Any idea who is speaking truth?
Until a video comes out, no one knows.

Yeah and what did the government do in this regard? Did they bother to order any vaccines over the last year or try and fund its production. Quick to take credit though weren't they, as if Modi set up Serum Institute :))

Apologize for what? For outing a scam? BJP leadership is being stupid here.

For picking on 16 Muslims out of 212 employees. 6 of them joined work a few days before the accusation. And only one of them is involved in bed allocation. And he too joined three days before.

Is this what you could in any way term responsible behaviour from an MP?

You have no choice. A brief national Lockdown for two to three weeks can put the break on things and allow the govt time to get more beds and oxygen in place. Like I said yourw ay past the point of worrying about the economy or livelihoods. You need to lockdown now..

Just happen to see someone's certificate who got vaccinated today and his face is still plastered on the doc. Any idea what great role did he play in this vaccine coming into being?

TGK, you are underestimating the impact of a lock down in terms of economic sector.

First of all, not all the states are in the same phase. Some states are reaching it's peak while others will reach peak by this month or June.

The lockdown will achieve nothing in this regard. That's why instead of nation wide lockdown, only localized lockdowns are occurring.

We can start with states/UTs having positivity rate of more than 20 %

Punjab had proposed to import oxygen from Pakistan, Centre rejected it, reveals CM Amarinder Singh’s letter to PM
The Punjab government had sought permission from the Centre to import liquid oxygen from Pakistan, but it was denied, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has revealed.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has revealed that the Centre has rejected his government’s proposal to import liquid oxygen from Pakistan.

In a press release issued by the Punjab government on Tuesday, the Punjab CM was quoted as saying that “the Government of India had expressed its inability to even allow Punjab’s local industry to undertake commercial import of LMO [liquid medical oxygen] from Pakistan through the Wagah-Attari border, which is geographically proximate”.

In the release, the CM further said that the Centre had failed to provide an “adequate supply of oxygen from alternate sources”.

Punjab CM Amarinder Singh on Tuesday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking their urgent intervention in ensuring an uninterrupted supply of medical oxygen to the state.

He also sought additional allocation of 50 MT LMO from a nearby source and 20 additional tankers, preferably conducive to rail travel for timely evacuation of oxygen from Bokaro.

Expressing concern over the imminent loss of lives due to oxygen shortage across the state, the chief minister said with mounting caseload, he was unable to increase Level 2 and Level 3 beds due to oxygen availability constraints.

The total allocation of LMO from outside the state is currently 195 MT, of which 90 MT is from Bokaro in eastern India. The balance 105 MT comes from LMO facilities in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

However, Punjab is not getting its daily allocated quota, said the chief minister. The existing backlog for Punjab from these LMO facilities is 5.6 MT from Panipat (Haryana), 100 MT from Sela Qui, Dehradun (Uttarakhand) and 10 MT from Roorkee, he added.

Referring to the shortage of tankers, the chief minister said the state was airlifting two empty tankers daily to Ranchi, with the filled tankers returning by road from Bokaro on a 48-50 hours journey. The chief minister said that the state government had already requested the Centre to allocate 20 additional tankers, conducive to rail travel, to allow for the regular evacuation of 90 MT LMO from Bokaro on a daily basis, but had been told that only two would be provided, and even those were yet to come.

There you go! What a gargantuan wastage of tax payer's money and mandate of voters!

This is a tricky one, on one hand this will definitely get praise from the hindi belt idiots.
But those idiots are already in pocket of BJP.
This decision may irk the casual Hindu middle class/upper middle class who have been struggling the most in cities such as kanpur, lucknow, Noida, ghaziabad, meerut etc and let BJp to lose vote among the city base hindu voters who voted for BJP last time

I don't see any gain from this decision to BJP, just losses. But maybe they did it because they are seeing the existing cow belt votebank slipping away from them after the Covid handling fiasco so to strengthen their existing hindi belt vote bank and can turn it on later as Yogi saviour of Cows during his election campaign.

Time will tell us, once this pandemic is over and campaigning begins for UP elections we will see why they did it.

Not specificallyabout you but Sometimes with some posters here it feels like if modi/bjp personally went to a hospital and shot sick covid patients then these posters would rationalize it by saying that people killed were critical and had zero chance of surivial anyway so in fact Modi was actually freeing up beds in the hospital for patients who could actually be saved...

New Delhi: India on Monday reported 4,187 fatalities due to COVID-19, highest-ever single-day deaths, pushing the country's toll to 2,38,270.

The country also logged a single-day rise of 4,01,078 COVID-19 infections, taking the tally of cases to 2,18,92,676, according to the Union Health Ministry's latest data.

The total number of recoveries has risen to 1,79,30,960 with 3,18,609 patients getting discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.09 per cent.

The active caseload in the country has increased to 37,23,446, comprising 17.01 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has dropped to 81.90 per cent, the data updated at 8 am showed.

India is battling the second wave of coronavirus infections with many states grappling with an acute shortage of medical oxygen, beds, and crucial medicines.

The country's COVID-19 tally crossed the grim milestone of 2 crore on May 4.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 30,04,10,043 samples have been tested up to May 7 with 18,08,344 samples being tested on Friday.

In view of an unprecedented surge in coronavirus infections, many states have imposed partial lockdowns or night curfew besides putting in place several other preventive measures.
