Covid-19 robs sheen off Onam, but Keralites celebrate festival with gaiety

Though high voltage festivities were missing, houses were as usual decorated with beautiful "pookkalam", the floral carpets and sumptuous 'sadhya' was prepared by homemakers on the Thiruvonam day today to mark the homecoming of righteous king Mahabali.

Amidst continuing concerns of increased COVID-19 cases and high Test Positivity Rate (TPR), Keralites on Saturday celebrated a low-key Thiru Onam, avoiding the usual mass festivities, but without losing the traditional gaiety and pomp.

It is for the second consecutive year that the pandemic has taken the sheen out of the biggest festival of the southern state and forced the people to celebrate it indoor. In fact, Onam was affected since 2018 when the state witnessed the flood of the century in August that year. The state had witnessed similar natural disasters including landslide during the Onam season in 2019 also.

Though high voltage festivities were missing, houses were as usual decorated with beautiful “pookkalam”, the floral carpets and sumptuous ‘sadhya’ was prepared by homemakers on the Thiruvonam day today to mark the homecoming of righteous king Mahabali.

The practice of elders gifting ‘onakkodi’ (new dress) to other family members, preparation of tongue-tickling banana chips and putting up Oonjal (high swings) in the courtyards also continued without any fail, especially in villages.

However, majority of people avoided mass family gatherings and visits to the houses of friends and relatives considering the health department directives.

The display of traditional art forms and games, which was a colourful part of the Onam festivities, were missing this year also.

Though major hotels have prepared Onam feast with an array of traditional delicacies promising home delivery, the number of takers were generally less, industry sources said.

The Atham festival, which heralds the start of the 10-day Onam festivities, was also held in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic.

An array of dignitaries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanaka Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wished people of the state happy Onam.

“Best wishes on the special occasion of Onam, a festival associated with positivity, vibrancy, brotherhood and harmony. I pray for everyone’s good health and wellbeing,” Modi tweeted.

WHO identifies counterfeit Covid vaccines in India being administered as ‘Covishield’
The WHO has issued an alert for counterfeit versions of Covid vaccines that are in circulation in India

(Reuters)

Counterfeit versions of Covid vaccines in India and Uganda have been identified by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the world health body said in a medical product alert issued on Monday.

The counterfeit versions were being passed off as Covishield, the primary vaccine used across India, said the alert.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) that manufactures Covishield – the version of the AstraZeneca jab for India –confirmed the doses were fake.

Tax Facts
The WHO warned the fake doses posed a “serious risk to global public health” and called for their removal from circulation.

The alert said the falsified products were reported to the health body between July and August this year.

It urged countries, healthcare centres, wholesalers and pharmacies to intensify “increased vigilance within the supply chains of countries and regions likely to be affected by these falsified products”.

“All medical products must be obtained from authorised/licensed suppliers. The products’ authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked,” it said.

India is no stranger to vaccine scams during the coronavirus pandemic. There have been many incidents where fake jabs have been administered to individuals, and in some cases, to housing societies that carry out vaccine drives, usually in exchange for large sums of money.

The first reported fake vaccine scam unearthed in the country affected close to 2,000 people in Maharashtra state in June this year. Many of the victims were believed to have been administered simple saline solutions.

About 14 people, including registered doctors, were arrested once the scam was unearthed when none of them received government vaccine certificates.

In another prominent example of a vaccine scam in the country and in the same state, a Bollywood film producer claimed to have been a victim.

Ramesh Taurani, who heads Tips Industries, a music label and film production company in state capital Mumbai, had organised a vaccination camp for 365 employees of his film production company in May and July.

None of those employees received vaccination certificates, prompting Mr Taurani to file a police complaint.

The WHO’s medical alert pointed out that falsified vaccines result in severe impacts to global public health and place additional burdens on vulnerable populations.

“It is important to detect and remove these falsified products from circulation to prevent harm to patients,” the alert said.

There has been no official response by India’s federal health ministry on the alert. Some media reports, however, have said the ministry was investigating the matter.

“Although we have a strong system to prevent such cases, with this development, the only thing we want to ensure is that no Indian received a fake vaccine,” a senior health ministry official was quoted as saying by the Mint newspaper.

“We are investigating the matter,” the official added.

The country has got a security cover under PM Modi’s leadership, he added

New Delhi: India has administered 60 crore vaccine doses so far, announced Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

Taking to his Twitter, Mandaviya said, “Under PM Narendra Modi ‘Sabko Vaccine Muft Vaccine’ initiative, India crossed the 60 crore vaccination mark. Congratulations everyone!”

The minister said that India took 85 days to touch the figure of 10 crore, then took 45 days to cross the 20-crore mark and 29 more days to reach 30 crore.

The country took 24 days to reach 40 crore from 30 crore and then 20 more days to cross 50 crore vaccinations on August 6. It took 19 more days to go past the 60-crore mark, Mandaviya added.

The nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive was rolled out on January 16 with healthcare workers (HCWs) getting inoculated in the first phase while the vaccination of frontline workers (FLWs) started on February 2.

The next phase started from March 1 for people over 60 years of age and those aged 45 and above with co-morbidities.

On April 1, India opened vaccination for all people aged more than 45 years and then decided to expand its vaccination drive by allowing everyone above 18 to be vaccinated from May 1.

Meanwhile, Mandaviya also informed that all states will be provided with over 2 crore additional COVID-19 vaccine doses in August.

“Besides the scheme of providing vaccines to every state this month, over 2 crore additional doses of vaccine are being made available. We have requested all the states to try to vaccinate all school teachers on priority before Teachers' Day, which is celebrated on 5th September,” Mandaviya tweeted.

According to the health ministry, more than 58.07 crore Covid vaccine doses have been provided to states and union territories so far.

Meanwhile, India reported 37,593 new cases of COVID-19 and 648 fatalities in the last 24 hours and as per the Union Health Ministry, Kerala recorded 24,296 COVID-19 positive cases.

"Covid Made In God's Computer, Decides Who Gets Infected": Assam Minister

Guwahati (Assam): A minister in Assam has claimed that that Covid-19 was a creation of God's supercomputer which decides who would get infected with the virus and who would die of it.

Chandra Mohan Patowary said this on Wednesday at an event to distribute financial assistance to beneficiaries under a state government scheme for wives of those who died of Covid at Amingaon in Guwahati.

"Nature has decided who would get infected, who won't and who would be taken away from Earth. This is happening from God's supercomputer, which is not man-made. The computer decided on sending COVID-19 virus to Earth with 2 per cent mortality," said Mr Patowary, Assam's Minister For Transport, Industry & Commerce, Act East Policy Affairs, Skill Development and Welfare of Minorities.

He added that the World Health Organization and its scientists had failed to find a medicine to eradicate this virus and nature had started a war against humanity.

"Where are the scientists who lectured everyone on Covid? They failed to find a medicine to eradicate it. People are dying even after taking the vaccine. Nature has control over this disease and only it can rectify it. We started a war against nature and has started a war against us too," said the senior minister.

Second Wave Of Pandemic Not Receded Yet, Third Wave Feared Post-Diwali: Maharashtra Minister

Colleges in Maharashtra are set to reopen from October 20. The government had said that it would be advisable if students are fully inoculated to attend the physical classes.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Tuesday said the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic has not receded yet in the state but at the same time conditions are not favourable to immediately trigger the third wave.
Speaking to reporters in the Nashik district, Mr Tope also said the COVID Task Force has cautioned about a third wave of the pandemic post the Diwali season.

"The second wave of the pandemic is not over yet. But there is no favourable condition for a third wave as of now. The state task force has cautioned of a third wave post the Diwali season. We are assessing the situation," he said.

Mr Tope said over nine crore people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with at least one dose in Maharashtra and 35 per cent of them have taken both doses.

He also said that no new coronavirus variant has been found yet and added that a special drive to inoculate the people left out so far will continue till the Diwali festival, which will be celebrated in the first week of November.

Mr Tope said the new challenge before the state administration is to get the college students vaccinated against COVID-19. He appealed to collegians to come forward for vaccination.

Colleges in Maharashtra are set to reopen from October 20. The government had said that it would be advisable if students are fully inoculated to attend the physical classes.

Referring to Mumbai not reporting any fresh death due to COVID-19 on Sunday for the first time nearly since the pandemic broke out in March last year, the minister said it was a big achievement for the city with a 1.5 crore population.

The recent trend indicates that the number of COVID-19 cases is on the decline in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra reported 1,485 COVID-19 cases on Monday, the lowest daily count in more than 17 months, and 27 deaths, taking the infection tally to 65,93,182 and the deaths to 1,39,816, as per the state health department.

As of Monday, Maharashtra had 28,008 active cases.

According to a study, India's R-value, which reflects how rapidly the coronavirus pandemic is spreading, has remained below 1 since September, suggesting that the infection rate is declining.

Kerala reports its first case of Omicron; India's tally goes up to 38

India reported five new Omicron cases on Sunday, taking the tally of the cases of the new variant in the country to 38. Meanwhile, India logged 7,774 new Covid-19 cases and 306 deaths in the last 24 hours.

India is bracing for a third wave of coronavirus as its largest cities - the capital Delhi and financial hub Mumbai - see a surge in cases.

India reported 58,097 cases on Wednesday, a six-fold rise in a week that experts say is fuelled by the Omicron variant.

Nearly a third of those infections came from Delhi and Mumbai.

Both cities have brought back curfews and other restrictions to halt the spread of the virus.

Dr NK Arora, head of India's vaccine task force, told NDTV on Monday that the third wave of the pandemic had already begun in the country, adding that the "whole wave seems to be driven by a new variant... Omicron".

The country has reported more than 2,000 Omicron cases - Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital, is leading the tally (653), followed by Delhi (464).

Delhi's health minister Satyendar Jain has said that 81% of Covid samples in the city tested positive for Omicron.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) - one of India's major hospitals - in Delhi has cancelled winter leave for doctors, according to reports.

The rising infections are a sombre reminder of the devastating second wave India faced in April and May - daily averages of about 400,000 cases at the peak of the crisis.

India has begun giving booster doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to priority groups amid a surge in infections.

Health and frontline workers and people above 60 years old with comorbidities are currently eligible to take the jab.

The drive began as India battles a spike in Covid cases fuelled by the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Early studies from other countries have suggested that a booster vaccine may provide more protection against Omicron.

India records first death with Omicron variant
The highly transmissive Omicron variant was first discovered in South Africa in November.

Since then, several countries have expanded their booster programmes or shortened the gap between jabs to shore up protection against the variant.

In India, the booster shot - dubbed a "precaution dose" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi - will be the same vaccine that was given to a person for their first and second doses.

India has been mainly administering two locally-manufactured vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin, since its vaccination drive began in January 2021.

On Sunday, India reported more than 179,000 new infections for the past 24 hours, driven by a steep rise in cases in big cities such as the national capital Delhi and financial centre Mumbai.

On the same day, Mr Modi chaired a review meeting with top officials, and asked for "technical support" to be provided to states reporting more cases.

The government had begun administering vaccines to 15-18-year-olds last week - it has said that 31% of Indians in this age group have been given the first dose so far.

Is India ready for a third wave of Covid-19?
More than 91% adults have been partially vaccinated so far, while 66% have received both doses.

But experts say that still leaves millions of unvaccinated people - many with underlying health problems that could increase the severity of the infection - at risk.

The spread of Omicron has also increased worries - India has confirmed a total of 4,003 cases of Omicron, with Maharashtra state reporting the highest (1,126), followed by Rajasthan (529) and Delhi (513).

The country has so far recorded more than 35 million Covid cases and about 483,000 deaths from the virus.

Last year, a devastating second wave overwhelmed the country's health system, leading to a shortage in oxygen, hospital beds and critical drugs.

New Delhi: India today recorded a massive jump in its daily Covid counts, raising fears of another spike in infections. As many as 2,183 new Covid cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours, an 89.8 per cent jump from yesterday's case count of 1,150 cases.
A total of 214 deaths have been recorded over the past 24 hours. This, however, includes a backlog of 212 deaths from Kerala -- a backlog of 62 deaths has been cleared following court appeals and the state reported 150 deaths between April 13 and April 16.

The daily positivity rate, an indicator of the spread of the infection in the population, has increased from 0.31 per cent yesterday to 0.83 per cent today.

The number of active cases, however, has seen a slim dip from 11, 558 to 11,542. The country has recorded a total of over 4.30 crore cases since the pandemic struck.

Among the cities witnessing a surge in cases is national capital Delhi, which reported 517 Covid cases. The total number of Covid-infected patients in Delhi, according to yesterday's bulletin, is 1,518 - the highest since March 3 this year.

Several students in Delhi and adjoining cities of Ghaziabad and Noida have tested positive over the past couple of weeks, sparking panic leading to closure of schools.

A survey has shown that the number of people in the National Capital Region reporting someone getting infected in their close social network rose by 500 per cent in the last 15 days, news agency PTI has reported.

The spike in cases is worrying at a time when all states have eased Covid restrictions on public movement. Many states have also removed the fine for not wearing masks in public while advising citizens to continue wearing them to guard against the infection.

India Records No Covid Deaths In 24 Hours, For First Time Since March 2020

New Delhi: India on Tuesday saw a single-day rise of 625 fresh COVID-19 cases, the lowest since April 9, 2020, while no death was reported in a span of 24 hours in first such instance since March 2020, the Union health ministry said.

The country's infection tally has climbed to 4,46,62,141, while the active cases have declined to 14,021, the ministry data updated at 8 am stated. The death toll has remained at 5,30,509.

On April 9, 2020, a total of 540 new cases were reported in a day.

No deaths were reported in the country in the last 24 hours in the first such instance since March 2020.

A 76-year-old man from Kalaburagi in Karnataka was the first victim of coronavirus in India.

The active cases comprises 0.03 per cent of the total cases, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has increased to 98.78 per cent, according to the health ministry website.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,17,611, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent.

According to the ministry's website, 219.74 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive.

New Rules For International Passengers Arriving In India

New Delhi: The self-declaration forms for Covid vaccination that had to be filled in by incoming international passengers on the Air Suvidha portal, will no longer be necessary, the government has said. The decision will come into effect from midnight.

A notice from the Civil Aviation ministry this evening read, "In the light of sustained declining COVID-19 trajectory and significant advances being made in COVID-19 vaccination coverage both globally as well as in India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has issued revised 'Guidelines for International Arrivals".

Under the revised guidelines of the health ministry, the submission of self-declaration form on the online Air Suvidha portal stand discontinued, the aviation ministry said. It, however, added a statutory warning: The rule could be reviewed if needed in view of the Covid situation.

The form on the aviation ministry's Air Suvidha portal was mandatory for incoming international passengers. In it, passengers had to declare their vaccination status, including the number of doses received and their dates.

This was in line with the rules in most nations.

The ministry, however, said it was preferred that the passengers be fully vaccinated. It was also preferable that all precautionary measures for Covid -- including the use of masks and social distancing at airports -- be continued.

Last week, the aviation ministry had said the use of masks was no longer compulsory during air travel, but passengers should use them to prevent another surge of coronavirus.

Till then, the use of masks in flights was mandatory.

The ministry said the decision was taken in line with the government's policy of a graded approach to Covid-19 management.

Over the last weeks, Covid figures have been shrinking. Official data this morning showed that currently, active cases (6,402) comprise 0.01 per cent of the total infections. The national recovery rate has increased to 98.8 per cent.

India's Latest Move To Track Virus Variants Amid China's New Covid Horror

COVID-19 horror stories leaking out of China and new cases reported from the US have prompted the centre to be prepared for any situation. The Health Ministry has written to all states to increase genome sequencing of positive cases to track coronavirus variants through the INSACOG network.

"ln view of the sudden spurt of cases being witnessed in Japan, United States of America, Republic of Korea, Brazil and China, it is essential to gear up the whole genome sequencing of positive case samples to track the variants through...INSACOG network," Health Ministry Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said in the letter to all states.

"Such an exercise will enable timely detection of newer variants, if any, circulating in the country and will facilitate undertaking of requisite public health measures for the same," Mr Bhushan said.

The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium, or INSACOG, is a consortium of over 50 laboratories to monitor genomic variations in the COVID-19 virus. Genome sequencing is a technique used to identify and understand the characteristics of new virus strains.

The centre said sample of all positive cases should be sent every day to INSACOG genome sequencing labs mapped with all states and Union Territories.

Some 35 lakh Covid cases continue to be reported every week globally, the centre said. India recorded 112 new Covid cases this morning; active cases fell to 3,490, according to Health Ministry data.

Crematoriums across China are straining to deal with an influx of bodies as the country battles a wave of Covid cases that authorities have said is impossible to track, news agency AFP reported.

Cases are soaring across China, with hospitals struggling and pharmacy shelves stripped bare in the wake of the government's sudden decision to lift years of lockdowns, quarantines and mass testing.

The United States has warned the outbreak is now of concern to the rest of the world, given the potential for further mutations and the size of China's economy.

In China's capital Beijing, local authorities on Tuesday reported just five deaths from Covid, up from two the previous day, AFP reported.

Beijing health officials said only those who had directly died of respiratory failure caused by the virus would be counted under Covid death statistics.

"At present after being infected with the Omicron variant, the main cause of death remains underlying diseases," Wang Guiqiang of Peking University First Hospital told reporters.

The US State Department said the surge was now a matter of international concern. "We know that any time the virus is spreading, that it is in the wild, that it has the potential to mutate and to pose a threat to people everywhere," State Department spokesman Ned Price said. "The toll of the virus is of concern to the rest of the world given the size of China's GDP [gross domestic product], given the size of China's economy," he added.

"Mask Up, Avoid Foreign Travel", Warns Top Indian Doctors' Group
"As of now, the situation is not alarming and therefore there is no need to panic. Prevention is better than cure," it added.

The country's top doctors' body, Indian Medical Association, today appealed to the public to follow Covid appropriate behaviour with immediate effect. In an advisory, it listed necessary steps to overcome "the impending Covid outbreak, including wearing face masks in all public places, maintaining social distancing, regular handwashing with soap and water or sanitizers. Soon after, union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said in the parliament that the government is keeping an eye on rising Covid cases in the country, and listed measures to contain the spread of the virus. He said all states have been asked to do genome sequencing, and random sampling of international flyers has also started from today.
The IMA has advised avoiding public gatherings like marriages, political or social meetings, and international travel. It further appealed to the people to consult doctors in case of any symptoms like fever, sore throat, cough, loose motions etc, and getting Covid vaccination including precautionary dose at the earliest.

"In view of the sudden surge of COViD cases in different countries, Indian Medical Association alerts and appeals the public to follow COVID appropriate behaviour with immediate effect. As per the available reports, nearly 5.37 lakhs new cases have been reported in last 24 hours from major countries like the USA, Japan, South Korea, France, and Brazil. India has reported 145 new cases in last 24 hours, out of which four cases are the new China variant - BF.7," it said.

It appealed to the government to upscale the preparedness "for any such situation as seen in 2021" by issuing necessary instructions to the concerned Ministries and Departments to make available the emergency medicines, oxygen supply, and ambulance services.

"As of now, the situation is not alarming and therefore there is no need to panic. Prevention is better than cure," it added.

Sources say the Centre might also issue an advisory to all states after today's high-level Covid review meeting, to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. States may be asked not to allow overcrowding while celebrating New Year.

The advisory is likely to stress on face masks, social distancing, and increased screening for the virus.

Those coming from China, who have stayed there for at least seven days, may be asked for compulsory testing. One percent random testing of passengers will also likely be advised. Sources said the preparation to bring back the infrastructure required for quarantine and testing will be done in the next seven days.

Amid demand by Opposition parties to immediately stop all international flights from China, government sources told news agency ANI that there is no order issued by the central government to curb incoming flights from the country, where a wave of Covid cases has been reported.

'We don't have any direct flights from China to India or from India to China but as of now, there is no such order issued to stop connecting flights to India which are arriving via China. The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) is an executing ministry, the final decision will come from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW)," government sources told ANI

India Records Over 10,000 Covid Cases For Fourth Day In A Row

India has recorded 10,093 Covid cases in the past 24 hours, about 6 per cent lower than yesterday's count of 10,747 infections. This is the fourth consecutive day on which the country has clocked over 10,000 cases in the recent spike in infections over the past couple of weeks.
The number of active cases in the country stands at 57,542 and 19 deaths have been recorded in the past 24 hours. The daily positivity rate, an indicator of the spread of infection, is 5.61 per cent

The upward trend in Covid cases has prompted several states to hold review meetings to assess preparations for another surge in hospitalisations.

Sources from the central government have said that the cases are likely to rise for the next 10-12 days and then subside. They have asserted that there is no need to worry.
