Coronavirus in Pakistan

People coming out in droves. Not many seem to be worried about precautionary measures.

To top it off, people are coming out in droves. Several pictures on social media of people lining up outside stores like Khaadi, etc. to buy clothes, presumably for Eid. Traffic jams in parts of Karachi. Normal service has resumed...
Indeed. I’ve seen pictures too and it is just unbelievable how careless people are.

Kya hojaya ga if they don’t get new clothes for Eid?

deaths still at a low level but number of cases are high. Cases wont show stability until after ramadhan.
The country will simply have to live with this thing as economic activity just cant be stopped...
Maybe this means that the country will spend more on health care now.

True. Even after Ramadan it's too widespread to control now unless another lockdown comes.

It will plateau eventually though. What I am hoping for is that we get there with minimum damage. And some therapeutics come along which decrease the ICU load. We should be getting first round of results soon from the trials.

The coronavirus cases spread through local transmission showed a dangerous upward trajectory in a recent report published by the World Health Organisation Pakistan chapter.

The report presented a dismal picture in terms of local transmission cases in Pakistan, province by province, on a weekly basis.

The report showed that Balochistan had the highest rate of local transmission at 93%, and only 7% were imported cases.

At second number was Sindh, where 92% were local transmissions and 8% imported cases.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 84% were instances of the virus being locally passed on while 16% cases were foreign.

In the worst-hit Punjab, 15% were foreign cases while 85% of the reported cases had emerged through local transmission.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, 37% were imported cases while 63% were of local transmission. Meanwhile, in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, 17% were foreign cases while 83% were passed on locally.

All about damage control now. It has a two week incubation period so any infections incurred in the next week or two wont appear until June'is so expect a spike in June or end of May. We don't know what the Pakistani peak is at the moment as they are keeping deaths to around 40. If we see a massive spike in deaths then that would be a massive problem. I cant see this thing plateauing until the end of the summer now. Original estimates had it at coming down in July but with the spikes in ramadhan I would say that has been delayed.

The govt is in a rock and a hard place thanks to the previous govt's and their corruption. The economy is bankrupt, we have a hostile neighbour bent on murder, and now this killer..I wonder if IK is wishing he had lost the election now..or perhaps it is Allah's qudrat that the nation had an honest leader in charge at this horrible time.

2-3 of my friends working in Pakistan have lost 25-50% of their salary and one person has been laid off. It can be argued that some companies are unfairly exploiting the epidemic. Those saying the lockdown must continue do not understand the economic catastrophy that is taking place

In the UK, we will not paid over time. Its fair to say that companies will seek to benefit from this crisis as their bargaining power has further increased.

When Masajid were kept open for Ramadan, I remember a lot of doomsday predictions on how this will lead to thousands of deaths and Pakistan wont be able to control the huge surge in infections, so has anything of that sort happened?

In April, we heard Florida will spike and become like Italy or NYC

In Late April, we heard how Georgia (the state) will see a huge uptick because they opened up partially

Neither happened, I believe that is true in Pakistan's case as well ?

Pakistan among countries likely to witness highest excess child mortality rates: Unicef

Pakistan is one of 10 countries that are most likely to witness the highest excess child mortality rates in the worst-case scenario during the Covid-19 pandemic , according to a Unicef report.

"An additional 6,000 children could die every day from preventable causes over the next six months as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to weaken health systems and disrupt routine services," the report states.

“Under a worst-case scenario, the global number of children dying before their fifth birthdays could increase for the first time in decades,” Unicef Executive Director Henrietta Fore said.

So are we producing those ventilators? Someone said that they were on hold putting thoughts thr tests.

And how many people are we testing per day as a total? As on WHO website, India are catching up

Pakistan markets shut over social distancing concerns

A few days after Pakistan started to ease its lockdown, authorities in Sindh province have sealed some markets for flouting social distancing measures.

More than 2,300 new cases within 24 hours were confirmed on Wednesday, the newspaper Dawn reported.

This comes two days after markets were allowed to open and traffic jams were seen across cities in Pakistan.

On Monday, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that the lockdown would be lifted in phases to give relief to its economy.

With more than 35,000 infections so far, critics have said that this could devastate the country's fragile health system - if cases surge.

Sampling for repeat tests of Covid-19 patients continues in Khairpur after controversy

The sampling of 250 positive Covid-19 patients for repeat tests continued in Khairpur district today under the Sindh chief minister's directives in the backdrop of a controversy that started over a contradiction in two test reports of MPA Rashid Shah Rashidi.

“The repeat tests will be done in a Karachi-based private laboratory as per government directives,” said DHO Dr Mohammad Hussain Abro.

GDA MPA Rashidi, the son of Pir Sibghatullah Shah Rashidi, the sitting Pir Pagara, was among the 250 people who had tested positive in Pir Jo Goth earlier this month. But he had gotten his test done privately at the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), a public-sector university in Karachi. His second test report returned negative.

“This led to a political controversy over the veracity of test reports of government laboratories, forcing the Sindh chief minister to order the re-testing of 265 people of Pir Jo Goth,” said a Sindh government officer who also monitors the Covid-19 situation in Sindh.

If the numbers are correct then this must be the lowest increase in active cases in about 2 weeks..... 900 people recovering in a day is AMAZING.

But the effects of lockdown relaxation are still to be felt, jahil quam is out flooding the markets because jaan jaye leken Khaadi ki sale na miss ho. :danish

it seems as if the major spikes have happened after the market areas were opened and SOPs were not followed.

However there has been a consistent rise in cases during ramadhan and one would expect that to come down once tarawih etc end.

The key is the rate of infection. I dont know what that is for Pakistan at the moment, it must be relatively high, and deaths are still low.

The country needs to lower the rate of infection but they cant do this until after ramadhan.

Atleast Punjab government is proactive..... Good on Usman Buzdar for silencing all those who mocked him by calling him Wasim Akram Plus he has been by far the best chief minister in this crisis.

Punjab govt decides to reopen shopping malls, public transport

Punjab government has decided to reopen shopping malls and allow public transport to operate again.

Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has decided to allow public transport to start operations in Punjab again. A meeting between the transporters and the provincial government will take place today to finalise the SOPs for use of public transport.

The decision has been taken after a report on the problems faced by citizens due to the closure of public transport was presented to the chief minister.

According to Punjab Minister for Trade Mian Aslam Iqbal, shopping malls and auto traders will also be allowed to operate from Monday.

190 participants of Youm-i-Ali processions in Karachi arrested for violating ban

At least 190 participants of Youm-i-Ali processions in Karachi have been arrested for violating the government ban on all religious processions and congregations, Karachi police spokesperson Inspector Shazia Jehan said.

A total of 39 FIRs were registered against the violators. According to an officer of South Zone police, 105 participants of a procession were arrested from their zone only.

The Sindh government has banned all religious gatherings, rallies and congregations during Ramazan in view of the Covid-19 outbreak.

MWM Sindh chapter secretary general Allama Baqir Abbas Zaidi in a statement strongly condemned the arrest of the processions' participants, who he said were following the requisite SOPs. He demanded their immediate release.

Govt prepared for increase in cases, says premier

Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the government is prepared to deal with an increase in the number of coronavirus cases and is working on increasing healthcare capacity.

The premier said that although Pakistan's cases were much less than the projected 52,000, the case numbers would continue to increase. "It is estimated that four in hundred people infected by the virus will need to go to hospital."

Hundreds booked as Youm-i-Ali procession taken out in Hyderabad in violation of ban

Violating the Sindh government’s ban on religious processions and congregations, several hundred mourners took out a procession on Hyderabad's Station Road after crossing barbed wires to observe Youm-i-Ali today.

The district administration and police had last night made it clear to the Anjuman-e-Imamiya Sindh (AIS), which holds a permit for holding the Youm-i-Ali procession every year, that the procession could not be taken out on Friday in view of the ban.

But AIS general secretary Mirza Sadiq said it had been agreed with police that mourners would be allowed to reach Qadamgah Maula Ali to hold a majlis, and accused the police of stopping the participants from doing so.

On the other hand, SSP Hyderabad Adeel Chandio said: “AIS leaders had agreed to hold majlis inside Qadamgah but they didn’t abide by their commitment."

FIRs have been registered against at least 15 identified and more than 200 unidentified persons for violating the ban.

Pakistan conducts highest number of daily tests during last 24 hours

Pakistan conducted 14,878 Covid-19 tests during the last 24 hours — the highest number of tests in a single day so far, a meeting at the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has been told.

Minister for Planning, Development Reforms and Special Initiatives Asad Umar said that the country's testing capacity has increased by 30 times since the emergence of the pandemic.

The minister said that there were only two labs which could conduct coronavirus tests in mid-March, adding that there were now 70 labs which could conduct tests.

5m babies expected in Pakistan during first nine months of COVID-19

Islamabad: United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef) has cautioned against a steep rise in Pakistan’s population — up to five million births — during the nine-month period of COVID-19 pandemic. The projection is from March-December 2020.

In a recent report, the United Nations’ fund, responsible for keeping an eye on children’s well-being, newborns and mothers’ health, their vaccination, learning and security issues, has projected a dismal picture of South Asia in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, estimating the births of 29 million babies in the region in the nine months after the COVID-19 outbreak.

Out of these, 20 million deliveries will take place in India alone. Pakistan comes second with five million, while for Bangladesh the figure is likely to be 2.4 million, the report says. Afghanistan will see an addition of one million newborns to its population during the same period.

The report released on May 6 predicted that an estimated 116 million babies will be born worldwide during the 40-week period between March 11 and December 16, with almost a quarter of these babies being born in South Asia.

On its twitter handle, Unicef South Asia has posted that almost a quarter of all babies born worldwide during the current pandemic will be in South Asia.

“With health systems under pressure, Unicef calls on governments and doctors to maintain life-saving services for pregnant women and newborns,” the global agency cautioned.

The Unicef report also suggests that a great measure of precaution and care must be taken by expecting mothers as well as their families because of the risk factor.

Unicef also appealed to the government and health-care providers to follow a certain set of instructions to ensure safety.

The highest number of births during these nine months are expected in India. Other countries with the expected highest numbers of births during this period are China (13.5 million), Nigeria (6.4 million) and Indonesia (four million) the report said. Most of these countries had high neonatal mortality rates even before the pandemic struck and may see these levels increase with the coronavirus crisis persisting, the Unicef report added.

Unicef has warned that COVID-19 containment measures could disrupt life-saving health services such as care during and after childbirth, putting millions of pregnant mothers and their babies at great risk.

Even rich countries are set to be affected by this crisis. In the United States, the sixth-highest country by expected number of births, more than 3.3 million babies are projected to be born between March 11 and December 16, 2020.
So far as Pakistan is concerned, birth of millions of children until December does not augur well for the country’s economy, which is already under a lot of stress due to the closure of business and industries and with exports and international trade coming to a complete standstill since lockdown measures were put in place.

Last month, the World Bank projected a decline in Pakistan’s national output in the range of 2.2 per cent to 1.3 per cent, which would also hit personal incomes badly.

“Pakistan, which has already experienced low growth rates in recent years, could fall into a recession”, the World Bank noted, adding that a 1.8 per cent growth in population in the country will imply a painful decline in per capita income and the country’s gross domestic product may fall from 2.2 per cent to 1.3 per cent during the fiscal year.

There you go! 5 million more mouths to feed. It is criminal on part of the current government and the previous government to have not initiated an aggressive population control policy. The biggest challenge facing Pakistan is the massive and hideously-high population growth. Nobody is willing to talk about it!

Govt announces 6-day holiday for Eid; all businesses and public places to remain closed

The interior ministry has announced a six-day holiday for Eidul Fitr, from May 22 until May 27 (Friday to Wednesday).

During these holidays, all businesses, public places, community markets and shops except essential services will remain closed.

Sindh agrees to resume public transport after Eid holidays

Sindh authorities have announced that they will allow operations of buses and ride-hailing service across the province after Eid holidays.

Sindh Transport Minister Syed Awais Shah also announced a relief package for transporters, who he said had suffered huge losses due to the lockdown but extended their cooperation to the government.

The package included exemption of several taxes and duties on transport services and companies.

Punjab govt allows public transport to operate provided SOPs are followed

The Punjab government has decided to allow online and app-based transport services to operate.

However, all public transport companies will be required to ensure the implementation of the laid down standard operating procedures (SOPs). Wearing masks have also been made mandatory for passengers, drivers and conductors. Passengers will be required to observe proper distance.

Chief Minister Usman Buzdar said the government had decided to allow inter-city and inter-district transport services after approving the recommendations of the steering committee. He further said that the government realised the difficulties of the common man.

Cases are going down again/staying idle around that 2000 range, even with increased testing. Rhe effect of lifting restrictions hasn't caught up yet, but we should still see increasing cases since it's been a week, more in some places that restrictions were lessened. Maybe people aren't showing symptoms yet or the warm weather is finally catching up. Another reason could be that's in may areas its much much widespread than we thought and most cases are mild/asymptomatic. The next couple of weeks will tell more. Hopefully its the later two which end up being the reason.

Pakistan records 30 times increase in testing capacity

ISLAMABAD: The Nat*ional Command and Opera*tion Centre (NCOC) has stated that over 14,000 tests for coronavirus were held across the country in a single day, taking the tally of tests conducted so far to around 360,000.

The data was shared during a meeting of the NCOC, headed by Minister for Pla*nning Development Ref*orms and Special Initiatives Asad Umar, on Saturday.

Expressing satisfaction over Pakistan’s increasing testing capacity, the federal minister said that from two laboratories in mid-March to 70 labs across the country till date, the testing capacity witnessed over 30 times increase during the last two months.

“The testing capacity of the country has favourably increased and over 14,000 tests have been carried out in the country which is encouraging and should be increased further,” he observed.

Initially, Pakistan was conducting a couple of thousand tests a day by the mid of March. The capacity was later doubled and it remained so for many days. It was informed that new labs were being established to increase the number of daily tests.

While the NCOC data rele*ased on Saturday show*ed that 14,878 tests were conducted in 24 hours, the capacity is likely to be enhanced further as Special Assistant to the Prime Min*ister on Health Services Dr Zafar Mirza had recently claimed that the number of daily tests would be inc*reased to 25,000 by May 31.

According to international data, the US has so far conducted the highest number of tests i.e. 11.11 million tests, showing an average of 33,616 tests per million population. Spain, the second worst-hit country, has conducted over three million tests, indicating 64,977 tests per million population. The UK conducted 2.4m tests, which shows 36,697 tests per million population.

However, considering its population, the United Arab Emirates attained the highest average of tests. The UAE conducted 158,068 tests per million population.

India, with 2.1m tests conducted so far, attained the average of only 1,549 tests per million population, while Pakistan has surpassed the ratio by conducting 1,631 tests per million population.

According to the NCOC statement, Mr Umar said that Pakistan has been quick in enhancing its capacity and capability in every policy strand whether health management system, emergency health care equipment, raising structure like National Coordi*nation Committee/NCOC, channelling resources and tapping efficient human resource and most importantly formulating standard operating procedures (SOPs) and their implementation.

“Where there is a will there is a way. The people of Pakistan can’t be left on the mercy of the pandemic. We have and will move every single resource available to mitigate the challenges of common people. We will take all steps necessary for public safety and well-being of people of Pakistan,” the minister said.

He denied that there was any shortage of medical equipment in the country and highlighted that it was necessary to focus on managing the trained human resource for handling the pandemic.

Mr Umar said the implementation of SOPs and social distancing was only possible through public education and awareness.

The NCOC was of the opinion that market associations/ traders’ organisations must ensure compliance with SOPs issued by the Ministry of National Health Services. In case of non-compliance, the particular market as a whole be closed for failing to ensure collective responsibility, it was suggested at the meeting.

Punjab Minister for Industries Mian Aslam Iqbal said around 336 warning notices had already been issued to different markets and industries over the violation of SOPs, whereas it was decided that such markets and industries would be sealed on repeated violation.

Minister for Interior Brig (R) Ejaz Ahmed Shah said the district administration should engage traders’ associations and local stakeholders to ensure implementation of the SOPs.

The NCOC mentioned that the Ehsaas Emergency Cash relief was going to recommence on Monday where the SOPs devised for public safety should be ensured to contain the pandemic.

Around Rs104 billion was distributed among eight million beneficiaries through Ehsaas Emergency Cash Relief, whereas Rs50 billion assistance package was prepared to aid 3.5 million small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Moreover, Rs50 billion worth agricultural relief package was launched for farmers, while Rs50 billion was also allocated for the health sector.

Later while presiding over another meeting that considered the budget for the next financial year, the Minister for Planning and Development said despite the Covid-19 challenges, funds would be allocated for different projects in Karachi.

It was decided to upgrade the system of the Planning Commission to improve the monitoring of development projects. Sindh Governor Imran Ismail also participated in the meeting through a video link.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz during a media briefing said the government was pursuing a comprehensive roadmap to handle the challenge of coronavirus pandemic.

He said despite the economic constraints, the government had announced a huge stimulus package of Rs1.2 trillion to provide a cushion and support to every segment of the society affected by the contagion.

Senator Faraz said all the federating units had been taken along to cope with the situation arising out of the pandemic.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered the reopening of shopping malls across the country on Monday, which were shut down during the lockdown imposed to curb the coronavirus pandemic.

The five-member larger bench of the Supreme Court was hearing a suo moto case regarding measures taken against the virus outbreak.

The bench was headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed while Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel, Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin Ahmed were also on the bench.

During the hearing today, Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed remarked that if the shops are shut down then shopkeepers will ‘die of hunger rather than the coronavirus’.

CJP Ahmed said that in Karachi, except for five big malls every market has resumed operations.

Upon which, Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shallwani said that a few markets were sealed for not following the Standard Operating Procedures laid out by the government.

“The sealed markets should be opened and instead of intimidating them (shop owners) make them understand (the situation and SOPs),” remarked the top judge.

The top judge also summoned details of all big shopping malls across Karachi from the city’s commissioner.

The Attorney General of Pakistan also presented arguments via video link from Karachi registry during today’s hearing, while Additional Attorney General appeared before the court.

The CJP expressed indignation over the violation of decisions undertaken during the National Command and Operations Centre’s sessions.

“What were the decisions taken by the NCOC?” said the top judge, to which Deputy Attorney General Sohail Mahmood responded that the NCOC decided to reopen the construction sector.

“What was the other decision,” continued asking the CJP.

“The NCOC’s other decision was to open small shops and community markets,” said the Deputy Attorney General, adding that the decision regarding reopening of big malls was not taken.

The CJP then inquired about the reason behind closing down markets on weekends, saying that the court will issue a written order that the small markets should remain open on Saturday and Sunday.

The CJP noted that the SOPs will be ‘better implemented’ at the big shopping malls.

The apex court also ordered that on the weekends, all the small markets should remain open to public.

Court expresses lack of satisfaction over NDMA report

The top court called the report presented by the NDMA unsatisfactory, saying that the country’s resources were being utilized in ‘a wrong manner’.

“Why has not our country gained the capapbility to produce its own testing kits?” he said to the representative of the NDMA.

To which the NDMA official responded that the Health Ministry can give a better response in the matter.

The CJP objected that there was no proper detail present regarding the expenditure of funds for anti-coronavirus measures.

The CJP remarked that the people of the country were not ‘servants’ of the Centre and provincial governments, adding that the citizens ‘are being held hostage in the name of quarantine’.

The top judge told the authority’s representative that the rights if the people are guaranteed in the Constitution and the government is not doing anyone ‘a favour’ by rendering its services.

The top court picked up the case to keep a review on the measures taken by the Centre and provincial governments to stem the spread of the virus among people.

So far, the top court has summoned officials from provinces, NDMA, Health department, and local government setup in cities to present a report on the policy and implementation of measures.

Islamabad, Pakistan - Scientists and public health experts are continuing to conduct research into why some South Asian countries - despite their ramshackle health infrastructure and dense populations - have witnessed lower coronavirus mortality rates compared with many Western countries.

By early May, the world's richest countries accounted for more than 90 percent of all reported deaths from COVID-19, according to a paper published in The Lancet medical journal. Adding China, Brazil and Iran to that list takes the number up to 96 percent.

By contrast, many densely populated developing countries in South Asia and parts of Africa have fared far better when it comes to the mortality rate from COVID-19, data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) shows.

In Europe, the observed case fatality ratio (CFR, or the percentage of deaths among confirmed coronavirus patients) has been high, with France reporting a rate of 15.2 percent, the United Kingdom 14.4 percent, Italy 14 percent and Spain 11.9 percent, according to JHU data. In the United States, the CFR is 6 percent, the data shows.

By contrast, in South Asian countries, those rates have been far lower. India has a CFR of 3.3 percent, Pakistan 2.2 percent, Bangladesh 1.5 percent and Sri Lanka 1 percent.

"The rest of the world - historically far more used to being depicted as the reservoir of pestilence and disease that wealthy countries sought to protect themselves from, and the recipient of generous amounts of advice and modest amounts of aid from rich governments and foundations - looks on warily as COVID-19 moves into these regions," write Richard Cash and Vikram Patel, public health experts at Harvard University, in The Lancet.

Doctors and scientists say there are a number of possible explanations for the discrepancy in how COVID-19 is affecting populations in different parts of the world, whether due to varying demographics, different levels of exposure to similar viruses or even incomplete data on mortality in some countries resulting in faulty conclusions.

In Pakistan, home to 220 million people and rickety health infrastructure that offers just six hospital beds per 10,000 people, the first case of the coronavirus was reported on February 26, a returning traveller from neighbouring Iran.

Since then, the virus has spread rapidly, with at least 42,125 cases reported countrywide as of May 18, making Pakistan the 20th in the world in terms of the total number of cases. It has reported 903 deaths, making it 26th worldwide on that list, with a CFR one-third that of the US, and up to 13 percent lower than some European countries.

Is the data accurate?
The first question researchers have asked when examining the data is whether the number of deaths being reported in Pakistan and other countries is, in fact, accurate.

Deaths - 3,029

Deaths - 9

Nepal

In neighbouring India, for example, some have questioned whether deaths are being accurately documented, with as many as 78 percent of deaths not being medically certified under normal circumstances.

In Pakistan, too, this is a possibility - although medical experts working with the government in its fight against the pandemic suggest the error rate would be far lower.

"There is such a stigma around the whole business of COVID, that people do not want to bring their patients to the hospitals," said Dr Seemin Jamali, head of the largest government hospital in Karachi, the country's most populated city.

The bodies of those confirmed to have been infected with COVID-19 at the time of death are dealt with through strict measures at government hospitals, with officials in full protective kits bathing the body as part of traditional Islamic burial.

"The district [officials] come to receive the dead body, and we pack it in a body bag. There needs to be a better mechanism for transporting the dead, because this is something that people don't want to [happen]," says Jamali.

"Bathing [the dead body] is a very important ritual for Muslims in Pakistan, so it is not possible that you to completely sideline people and say you will bury [their family members] yourselves."

Nevertheless, Jamali and other experts agreed that this appeared to result in only a modest decrease in the reporting of deaths - whether COVID-19-related or not.

Dr Faisal Sultan, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan's focal person on the coronavirus crisis, says the government has put systems in place to ensure that all deaths are being accounted for, including direct coordination with provincial health authorities and community outreach using Pakistan's extensive network for polio vaccination.

"The health system is so sensitised right now to COVID that in the present situation, the possibility of [large numbers of] underreported deaths is unlikely," he told Al Jazeera.

Dr Faisal Mahmood, head of infectious diseases at Karachi's Aga Khan University Hospital, the largest research hospital in the country, concurred, saying results from a preliminary survey at the city's graveyards had not suggested a rise in deaths as opposed to the previous year.

Al Jazeera also interviewed doctors and officials at major government hospitals in Karachi, the eastern city of Lahore, the capital Islamabad and the southwestern city of Quetta - where a number of coronavirus cases have been reported. None noted any marked increase in patients who were dead on arrival, whether from the coronavirus or other causes.

However, Dr Mahmood cautioned: "It may be that our death rate is not low, but that our epidemic is slow or that we are earlier in our epidemic, and that eventually, we will have the same death rate."

Younger populations
If the data on the number of deaths is relatively accurate, that leaves several other possible explanations for why Pakistan is seeing so few deaths compared with other countries.

The US, for example, at the same stage in its outbreak (66 days since 100 cases were confirmed) had reported more than 65,000 deaths. Pakistan's 903 is two orders of magnitude below that number.

Dr Adnan Khan, a public health researcher and infectious disease specialist, says much of the exploration of correlations with coronavirus mortality rates is "conjecture" at this point without the backing of hard facts and comprehensive study, but that the demographics of South Asia's population, and South Asians' physiology, may have the answer.

"The younger population hypothesis is more credible [than other theories]," he says, citing Pakistan's relatively younger demographics as compared with countries where COVID-19 has claimed more lives. "Many of the deaths in developed countries have reportedly happened in elderly people living in nursing homes."

In the UK, more than 37 percent of the country's 33,614 coronavirus-related deaths have occurred in elder care homes, according to the UK's Office of National Statistics. In the US, that number is also about one-third of all coronavirus deaths, according to a report in the New York Times.

By contrast, Pakistan - and South Asia in general - has a far younger population than those countries, with a median age of 22.5.

"This may be one of the reasons, because if you look at the population pyramid, we have fewer elderly people as compared with the US and Europe, and we know those are the folks who are dying more frequently," said Dr Mahmood.

Varying immune responses
Another factor that has been suggested is differences in the population's immune characteristics.

"Is it the environment around us? Different environmental factors that have changed our immune system in some way? We have chronic infections like tuberculosis and others [in this part of the world], or it may be because of vaccinations," says Mahmood. "We don't know the answer to that particular one."

Adnan Khan, the public health researcher, believes there could be higher immunity due to exposure to other infections, but that any correlation with vaccine use would have to be borne out by further study.

S Asia - IndiaIn India, some have questioned whether deaths are being accurately documented, with as many as 78 percent of deaths not being medically certified under normal circumstances [Harish Tyagi/EPA]
Pakistani children receive expanded immunization, with vaccinations against nine different diseases being administered in several rounds before the age of 18 months.

Dr Sultan agrees that this could be a factor, but cautioned against jumping to conclusions - as many have hastily concluded that use of the BCG tuberculosis vaccine gives greater resistance to COVID-19.

"People talk about how our exposure to various pathogens or patterns of immunisation change how our immune system is," he says. "All of these things are possible, but no one has been able to categorically prove it."

Another possible factor could be the environment in South Asian countries, he said, indicating that regions with higher average temperatures and levels of sunlight and its associated ultraviolet radiation have shown relatively lower death rates so far.

Researchers have, based on the data available so far, downplayed the possibility that the strains of the virus affecting South Asia are different in any meaningful way from those hitting European and other countries where death rates are higher.

"Biologically we know that the coronaviruses do not mutate that much - whenever a virus replicates, there is a bit of mutation built in, but the coronaviruses have error-proofing enzymes, so they tend to mutate less," said Dr Mahmood. "And these mutations don't always affect how virulent the virus is […] they are more useful in terms of identifying the strain than affecting its [lethality]."

Whatever the reason, all researchers that Al Jazeera spoke to said it was far too early to say categorically why certain countries were seeing lower levels of deaths from the coronavirus.

"I want to be clear: we don't know exactly what is going on right now [with the lower deaths]," said Dr Sultan.

Wide prevalence, lower deaths
On the other end of the spectrum from examining deaths, Dr Wajiha Javed, the head of public health and research at Getz Pharmaceuticals in Karachi, has been examining the prevalence of the virus among Pakistanis. Her findings tend to bolster the conclusion that something is causing people in Pakistan - and the region generally - to react differently to the virus.

Pakistan, like many developing countries, is performing limited numbers of tests per day, which are almost exclusively Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) swab tests. The country has conducted 387,335 tests since the outbreak began, according to government data. Those tests are being conducted largely only on those who have exhibited symptoms.

Javed, however, found that the prevalence of asymptomatic carriers of the virus in her surveys has been far higher than expected. In results from 4,000 tests carried out on factory and office workers, her data shows that between 7 and 8 percent were testing positive.

"This was in 'normal' people, not people who are going to the hospital, who are even sick or have any symptoms whatsoever," she said. Out of her sample, roughly 90 percent had not exhibited any symptoms at all, she said.

"Our disease is different. We have people who are exhibiting mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. That might show that we have some sort of innate immunity that is protecting us from going into severe or moderate disease," she added, stressing that those who do experience severe forms of the disease have the same risk of death.

"That doesn't mean we are not infected, and that we are not infecting others."

Pakistanis stranded in Dubai break into consulate over immediate repatriation

DUBAI: Anxious expats stranded in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) city on Monday broke into the Pakistani consulate in Dubai, with many climbing the building's gate, in a bid to seek immediate facilitation pertaining to their repatriation amid the coronavirus crisis.

More than 50,000 Pakistanis remain stranded in Dubai but all of them could not return due to limited flights back home. So far, some 10,000 have flown back to Pakistan over the past two months.

Pakistani citizens stuck abroad demanded the government resume normal flights as restrictions on almost all other sectors in the country had been lifted.

The consulate, however, had asked the expats to be patient and remain assured that the leadership was working fast to make arrangements for their return.

The Pakistani government had on March 21 announced that all international flights were suspended to curb the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus.

However, chartered flights operated by the national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines, were run to repatriate citizens stranded abroad.

Some of the world's leading tennis stars, including men's number one Novak Djokovic, have rallied behind relief efforts led by Pakistan's top tennis player to help feed people affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and Indian ace Sania Mirza are among a star-studded lineup of present and former athletes who have donated their signed memorabilia to the Stars Against Hunger auction.

The initiative was launched last week by doubles specialist Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, who has been raising funds and delivering door-to-door ration packs to poor families in Pakistan suffering due to the country's partial lockdown.

"This COVID-19 has affected every single one of us, in every country, so I'm just trying to play my part in the best way I can and trying to help the needy, the poor and the daily wagers during this pandemic," Qureshi, world-ranked 50, told Al Jazeera on Monday.

His foundation Stop War Start Tennis in collaboration with Rizq, a non-profit organisation, has so far helped feed more than 2,500 families in underprivileged areas of the country's most populous province of Punjab.

"I feel like tennis has given me this opportunity and platform to help these people out right now and it's a need of the hour as well," the 40-year old said. "The most important thing is compassion towards humanity."

British-Pakistani boxer Amir Khan, Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, former fast bowlers Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar, and international squash legend Jahangir Khan have also pitched in with autographed gloves, shirt, ball, helmet and racket respectively.

The online auction which closes on March 24, aims to raise up to $220,000 to support 10,000 families.

Hunger problem

Tens of thousands of labourers and other daily wage workers in Pakistan have lost their livelihoods during the pandemic that is testing the country's weak health infrastructure and struggling economy.

More than 42,000 people have been infected by the coronavirus in the South Asian nation of 220 million, but the death rate has remained relatively low with 903 deaths.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan has reiterated that his government chose a strategy of implementing a targeted and incremental lockdown to "balance the need to save people from corona[virus] and the continuation of economic activity".

"It has not been easy," Qureshi said about the situation in the country.

"There are more people getting affected by hunger actually than COVID-19 itself ... and in that the government can't reach each and every house and family."

Hence, voluntary aid groups and athletes have stepped in to lend their support in efforts to provide adequate supplies of food and other essentials to Pakistan's poorest.

Former national cricket captain Shahid Afridi is among them.

The former cricketer through his charity has distributed food supplies, disinfectant soap and other essentials to 22,000 families in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan and Pakistan-administred Kashmir.

PTI lawmaker who tested positive for coronavirus passes away in Lahore

A PTI member of the Punjab Assembly (MPA) from Gujranwala, Shaheen Raza, passed away on Wednesday at Lahore's Mayo Hospital after having tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Raza was shifted to the isolation ward of Mayo Hospital, Lahore, on Monday and was put on a ventilator after her condition deteriorated.

On Saturday night, Raza was quarantined at DHQ hospital after displaying symptoms of coronavirus. Her sample was sent to the laboratory and she was confirmed to have the virus on Sunday.

The legislator had been inspecting quarantine centres for some time. Some days back, she fell ill and she got treatment from private doctors and was later shifted to the DHQ hospital.

Doctors said that the 60-year-old MPA also suffered from diabetes and blood pressure issues.

Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed deep grief and sorrow on her demise. In a statement, the premier conveyed his condolences over Raza's death to her family, Radio Pakistan reported.

While expressing sadness over the MPA's death, President Arif Alvi prayed for her soul and for family to be granted the strength to bear the loss.

Information Minister Shibli Faraz also expressed sadness over her death. In a Twitter post, the minister said that Raza's services for the party were "unforgettable".

She was elected to the Punjab Assembly on a special seat in 2018.

expect more jumps. I think the state has made a decision that they cant keep the lockdown going but can manage corona virus until a vaccine becomes available..there seems to be a case to be made that the strain in pakistan is less deadly than in europe..but we shall see..

The state can only do so much. Every body knows what steps one needs to take to avoid getting HIV. The government isn't on the people's heads enforcing the requirements to prevent HIV, and therefore those who adhere to them do not get it. Same is the concept for corona. The government has already given precautionary measures to take but if people aren't listening they are themselves to blame.

On a suicide mission this nation is only luck can save us shrines in Punjab also opnened logic behind this #donation

Lack of leadership is evident

I hope we do not see a Brazil like situation here

They let go of a lockdown and social distancing and now its a bloodbath over there.

A lockdown is not sustainable, the economy will collapse and impact more people. People need to take responsibility and stay safe. The state has its limitations and the economy is unfortunately one at the moment.

yup. As long as they keep deaths to around the level they are, the country will have to live with this plague. Better treatments are being worked on and hospital capacity is being increased so the country should be able to cope for now. If there is a spike in deaths then expect major curfews etc.

Cases will go up but recoveries are increasing too.

This is a chance for the govt to improve the national health environment within the country. I expect covid to be with us for a long time. I think its potency will go down but you may see flare ups. Vaccine is the only hope unless it petres out naturally which is a possibility.

Initially Brazil wasn't even testing that many people. I recall quite accurately that when Brazil had 30k cases they had only done 60k tests. So Infact the number of cases would have been in the 100,000s.

Secondly Brazil is going from summer to winter, it is an established fact now that corona is more potent when the weather is colder.

I shudder to think what might happen in South Asia around December-January.

LHC throws out appeal to open parks, recreational spots on Eid

The Lahore High Court chief justice has thrown out an appeal to permit the opening of parks and recreational spots — closed due to the coronavirus outbreak — on Eidul Fitr, saying that the Supreme Court was already hearing a case regarding the Covid-19 situation, which "has already become serious".

"Do you want to take from me a license to kill children?" LHC Chief Justice Qasim Khan asked the petitioner.

Silver lining is that a 1000 people recovered today. That is amazing. So recovery curve is trailing behind cases curve by about 2-3 weeks. If we somehow manage to keep new cases to around same level for 2 weeks then our active cases would start dropping
