Coronavirus pandemic - World News

I live in Soest, Germany. One man got infected with the virus in the town and now has been isolated. It has been published in the newspaper. However, events haven been canceled because of this. No more crowd gatherings in the town. It is spreading like wild fire. No town or city is safe.

Look at the Silver lining here, global pollution is down, productivity is up with people working from home, same people saving travel costs for work, so all in all, not so bad.

Coronavirus: Troops sent to New York 'containment zone'
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced a one-mile (1.6km) coronavirus "containment zone" around a town north of New York City.

New Rochelle has seen "probably the largest cluster" of US cases, he said.

National Guard troops will be used to clean schools in the town and deliver food to any quarantined individuals.

The death toll in Italy, one of the countries worst hit by the virus, rose to 631 as the authorities placed the whole country in lockdown.

The latest increase in deaths in Italy - 168 - is the biggest the country has recorded in a single day, and the total number of cases went from 9,172 to 10,149.

Italy's death toll is the highest outside China, which recorded its lowest number of new infections, just 19, on Tuesday.

China, where the virus was first detected, has seen a total of 80,754 confirmed cases, with 3,136 deaths.

In other developments:

The World Trade Organization suspended all meetings until 20 March after a staff member became infected
UK virus cases reached 373 as a sixth person died
Thousands of flights were cancelled worldwide as airlines struggled to cope with a slump in demand
Why is New York state taking this action?
The state has 173 active cases, the most in the US.

Of these cases, 108 are in Westchester County, where New Rochelle is located. New York City, which is located around 25 miles (40km) south of New Rochelle, has 36 confirmed cases of the virus in its population of eight million people.

Mr Cuomo said there would be no travel restrictions in the town (population 77,000) but large meeting points in the area would be closed.

Schools, gathering places and businesses in the virus hot spot will be closed for two weeks.

There were 804 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US as of Tuesday afternoon, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, which is tracking the outbreak.

Twenty-eight people have died in the US as a result of the virus - 23 in Washington state, two in California, two in Florida and one in New Jersey.

"It is a dramatic action, but it is the largest cluster in the country, and this is literally a matter of life and death," Mr Cuomo said, adding that numbers of cases were "going up unabated" in New Rochelle.

"You're not containing people. You're containing facilities."

Officials will also set up a coronavirus testing facility at a local hospital.

New Rochelle has a population of close to 80,000 people.

A synagogue is at the centre of the New Rochelle outbreak, local media report.

A man in his 50s who attended religious services is believed to be "patient zero" in the region. Around 1,000 people associated with the temple are now under quarantine.

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, said he has been told he does not need a coronavirus test after appearing at a conference last month that was attended by an infected individual.

Five senior Republicans, including Mark Meadows - the president's newly appointed chief of staff - announced they would be self-quarantining after interacting with the unidentified person.

The White House has said Mr Trump did not have direct contact with the patient.

Mr Trump and some of his fellow Republicans have been accused of racism for referring to the disease as the "China Virus" and the "Wuhan virus".

The disease was widely referred to by those terms after it was first reported in China in December.

But US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield told a congressional hearing on Tuesday that it was wrong to refer to the virus as Chinese.

He pointed out that there were serious outbreaks in many countries.

The president had earlier shared a tweet saying his planned wall at the US-Mexico border would help contain the spread of the virus.

Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden responded by saying: "A wall won't stop a virus. Racism won't stop a virus. Do your job."

As the number of cases continues to rise, the US is working to repatriate passengers from the Grand Princess cruise that docked in California yesterday. A total of 21 individuals on the vessel have tested positive for Covid-19 thus far.

Some 140 Britons were on the cruise. The BBC understands the British passengers will be flown out of the US on Tuesday evening.

They will be advised to self-isolate for two weeks upon return to the UK, and the cruise company is expected to arrange transport for them after they land in the UK.

Coronavirus: UK virus cases reach 373 as sixth person dies

The number of coronavirus cases in the UK reached 373 on Tuesday, a rise of 54 since the previous day.

It comes as a man in his early 80s became the sixth person to die in the UK with the virus.

Meanwhile, airlines have cut thousands of flights including to and from Italy after the country was put on lockdown.

And GPs are warning routine appointments at surgeries may have to stop as the number of coronavirus cases rises

The British Medical Association said routine monitoring of long-term health conditions might have to stop enable GPs to "focus on the sickest patients".

Earlier, England's deputy chief medical officer defended the decision to delay closing schools and introducing other stringent measures, saying experts were assessing new cases on an hourly basis to achieve a "balanced response".

Earlier Dr Jenny Harries said she expected significant increases in the number of cases in the UK beginning in about 10 to 14 days time, at which point people with flu-like symptoms would be advised to self-isolate.

The vast majority of those diagnosed with coronavirus in Britain were "pretty well" but might "feel a bit rough for a few days", she added.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said "wherever clinically and practically possible" people should access GP appointments "through phones and digital means", rather than going to surgeries in person.

The latest figures as of 9:00 GMT on Tuesday include 324 cases in England, 27 in Scotland, 16 in Northern Ireland and six in Wales.

Later on Tuesday, a further nine cases were confirmed in Wales bringing its total to 15.

There are 91 in London, with the next highest infected area being south-east, with 51 cases. Cases by local council area in England can be viewed here.

The latest person to die, on Monday evening, was a man with underlying health conditions who was being treated at Watford General Hospital.

He caught the virus in the UK and officials are trying to trace who he had been in contact with.

I am in Seattle where almost 200k Amazon, MSFT, Google, Facebook employees are working remotely. Whilst it has been great for the environment with all those buses and cars off the road. It has been devastating for the SMB such as restaurants, food trucks, hair salons etc that depend on all those employees to eat and shop while at work. Amazon just announced to support SMB around its Seattle campus by giving them 5M USD. If this goes on for far too long, it will have devastating effects on local economies. Downtown Seattle is a ghost town at the moment.

This should go away in summer. A good time to buy stocks though.

Coronavirus: Health minister Nadine Dorries tests positive

Health minister and Conservative MP Nadine Dorries says she has been diagnosed with coronavirus.

Ms Dorries, the first MP to test positive, said she had taken all the advised precautions after finding out and had been self-isolating at home.

It comes as a sixth person died from the virus in the UK, which has a total of 382 cases.

The latest person to die was a man in his early 80s who had underlying health conditions.

Meanwhile, GPs are warning that routine appointments at surgeries may have to stop as the number of coronavirus cases rises.

The British Medical Association said routine monitoring of long-term health conditions might have to stop to enable GPs to "focus on the sickest patients".

Ms Dorries, who has been an MP since 2005, said in a statement: "I can confirm I have tested positive for coronavirus."

She added: "Public Health England has started detailed contact tracing and the department and my parliamentary office are closely following their advice."

Health Secretary Matt Hancock tweeted that she had "done the right thing" by self-isolating at home and wished "her well as she recovers".

He added: "I understand why people are worried about this disease. We will do all we can to keep people safe, based on the best possible science."

I just found out that ordering N95 masks is useless. These masks aren't supposed to be reusable and you may have to buy a lot of these. It can get quite expensive.

Will a face mask protect me from the new coronavirus?

It depends on the type of mask. A regular surgical mask, the kind most people wear in public, will not protect you against the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV). This is because they do not provide an airtight seal around your nose and mouth, and are not designed to filter out the virus.

An N95 respirator, the type often worn by health care workers, can provide some protection from the new coronavirus if used properly, because they can filter over 95% of virus particles and seal tightly around the nose and mouth. But these masks aren’t recommended for the general public because they are uncomfortable and hard to use properly.

Should I wear a mask?

Face masks are not recommended for healthy people to protect against coronavirus. However, they are recommended for people who are ill, to help reduce the spread of the virus from droplets released when they cough or sneeze.

How do I use a mask properly?

If you do choose to wear a mask:

Follow the instructions that come with the mask to ensure a good fit.
Don’t touch your face while wearing the mask.
When removing the mask, don’t touch the front, only the ear loops.
Discard the mask and clean hands after use.
Do not reuse masks.
What else can I do to stay safe during an outbreak?

Clean your hands frequently with soap and warm water, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, especially before eating or touching your face.
Avoid people who are sick.
If you are sick, stay home to avoid infecting others.
Cover your mouth and nose with your arm if you cough or sneeze.

The government will unveil its first Budget later, amid growing fears about the impact the outbreak will have on the UK economy.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has pledged the NHS will get "whatever resources it needs" during the crisis, while he is also expected to unveil measures to boost the self-employed and small businesses who are left out of pocket.

Meanwhile, NHS England said it was scaling up its capacity for testing people for the infection, with the number of cases set to rise.

Coronavirus in the UK: How are people responding?
What's the risk on public transport?
Ms Dorries, the MP for Mid Bedfordshire, said in a statement that Public Health England had started tracing people she had had contact with, and the department and her parliamentary office were closely following its advice.

The 62-year-old, who began her career as a nurse, later tweeted that it had been "pretty rubbish but I hope I'm over the worst of it now".

But she added she was worried about her 84-year-old mother who was staying with her and began to cough on Tuesday.

It is not known how many meetings Ms Dorries had attended at Westminster or in her constituency in recent days.

The Department of Health said she first showed symptoms on Thursday of last week - the same day she attended a Downing Street event hosted by the prime minister - and had been self-isolating since Friday.

No 10 did not comment on whether Boris Johnson had undergone testing, or whether he will now be tested.

All health ministers, including Health Secretary Matt Hancock, are to undergo testing for the virus, along with other officials who have come into contact with Ms Dorries.

Mr Hancock tweeted that she had "done the right thing" by self-isolating at home and wished "her well as she recovers".

He added: "I understand why people are worried about this disease. We will do all we can to keep people safe, based on the best possible science."

Something doesn’t seem right...

All we hear are the number of new cases and the deaths.
What about how many have recovered?

Looks like ones with mild infection do recover with care and body immunity working itself. But those with severe infections don’t and eventually we would need vaccine to make those better

Indonesia records first death

A 53-year-old woman has died from coronavirus in Indonesia, the country's first recorded death from the virus, according to a health ministry official.

The woman, a foreign national, had underlying conditions including diabetes and hypertension, health ministry official Achmad Yurianto said, adding she had already been in critical condition when she was admitted to a hospital.

Indonesia has 26 other confirmed coronavirus patients.

Coronavirus: COVID-19 outbreak declared pandemic by World Health Organisation

The coronavirus outbreak has now been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

More than 4,300 people have died globally after contracting COVID-19, the prevalent strain of coronavirus, and there have been over 121,500 confirmed infections.
There have been more then 3,000 deaths in China, the epicentre of the outbreak.

And in Italy, the second worst affected country worldwide, the number of dead in the most severely hit region of Lombardy has reportedly risen from 468 to 617 in a day.

According to the WHO website, a pandemic is defined as the worldwide spread of a new disease.

It can also refer to a disease which is prevalent over a whole country.

In contrast to a pandemic, an epidemic refers to the spread of illness in a "community or region...clearly in excess of normal expectancy".

According to a 2017 report, the WHO has four phases to describe the outbreak of a pandemic.

Interpandemic phase - this is the period between pandemics

Alert phase - this is when a new virus has been identified and risk assessments are carried out at local, national and global levels

Pandemic phase - this is the period of global spread of the virus. Some experts say this is obviously happening with coronavirus.
Transition phase - this is when the global risk reduces and countries begin to recover.

Authorities also announced a public holiday in the country from March 12 to March 26.
Kuwait will halt all commercial flights to and from the Gulf Arab state starting Friday and until further notice, with the exception of cargo flights, state news agency KUNA said on Wednesday.

Authorities also announced a public holiday in the country from March 12 to March 26, with work resuming on March 29, KUNA said, adding that entities providing vital services would remain open.

It said people were banned from going to restaurants and cafes, including those inside malls.

I currently have a fever and I don't know if it is the virus. I don't have any cough though so maybe it is just a regular fever.

Let's see what happens.

University of Toronto sent its first proper email on corona. People can skip classes without a doctors note. 2 profs who are sick cancelled their classes

UK has said next winter this will peak.

But the UK government is a joke.

The spanish flu killed many first then went away in summer and came mutated even deadlier second time.
Year 1918, so if not handled now it could be deadlier in winter.

That flu killed 20 to 50 million world wide and I think had 2 deadly returns.

Take a deep breath and try to hold it for 10 to 15 seconds. If you have mucus in your lungs it should cause you to cough up. So fever and cough might need a test.
I would advise to keep monitoring your temperature and stay away from work or school and also avoid large crowds.

Weren't there reports that some patients in China were infected again after recovering ?
And yes, it mutates each time it is transmitted to a new person.

Thanks. Tried that. No mucus yet.

I am feeling kind of unwell though. Definite fever but nothing else so far.

Planning to monitor it for the next few days. Hopefully nothing serious.

That 10-15 sec breath holding test is ** and void of any real value.

Have you been to a virus infested area or been in contact with anyone who has? Are you based in Bangladesh?

I live in Toronto.

I haven't been to any virus infested area and there is no way for me to tell whether I was in contact with someone who has the virus.

One of my coworkers went to Hong Kong for vacation. My city has a large number of Chinese/South Korean people.

With "contact" I meant talking to someone who is a potential carrier for 10-15 min at a close distance. In your case the coworker of yours. In which time period was he in Hongkong and ask him how he is doing. All this info is supposed to serve as red flags and help you calculate your odds. If your coworker isn't doing fine I wouldn't worry much.

Presence of large number of Chinese people isn't an issue. They need to have visited the danger area in the past few weeks to be somewhat of a concern.

You have the right idea, best stay at home for next few days. Do you live alone or with family members? Keep your contact with them limited and pretty much lock yourself in a room.

Yeah. Let's see. I may go for testing if fever persists after 3-4 days. It could be a regular fever. Hoping for the best. May God keep us protected.

I met a friend today and we chatted about this topic - according to him its an American conspiracy to take down China. I asked if this virus can take down Chinese than why not Americans? I informed him there are already 1000 plus cases in America right now. Nobody benefits from this position. Stocks, oil, markets are crashing. People are losing billions and trillions of dollars.

He also relayed that eating 7 khajoors or something similar to that will keep you away from all illness and diseases. I wonder why are these scientists being paid millions to do research when the solution is so readily available?

Pakistani/Muslims are the worst when it comes to self victimization.

I would first argue with people like these, then I learned over the years there’s no benefit. I now just say yes man, you are right.

Does anyone know of any official or unofficial numbers of young people/children dying of this virus?

I believe the information given in the early stages suggesting only the elderly are vunerable was false. Children and teenagers have also died in numbers.

Fail to understand why the government of Pakistan and PCB has not placed a ban on large public gathering.

Pakistan has only this one defense against minimizing the spread of the virus.

It is absolutely ridiculous to have people coming to watch the games.

PSL should be suspended and Bangladesh tour postponed. They just suspended the NBA season here in the States!

If things get worse, worldwide cricket may need to be suspended. Millions of infections worldwide is now a real possibility.

Good for you mine just went online for the semester 😭😢
But I would rather have this than not completely the credits

Some people are saying Trump might have it based on his recent press conference. Wasn't sounding too good.

Wouldn't be it awesome to be able to diagnose the disease just by the sound of the voice?

Utter nonsense. People just like to hate on Trump. Trump may deserve most of his criticism but I respect his quick decision to ban travel from China, Iran and now Europe. Yes it won't stop the virus but it does stop a potential large inflow of people who mighg carry it and then further infect others.

Many European countries are and have been reluctant on closing the borders claiming it won't stop the virus but they are just playing naive with the population.

Podcasts and online uni, I prefer it actually. No need to be on time just do the workload on your own schedule

So are flights from pakistan to Canada stopped? Can anyone confirm? Hopefully they are not banned

I support the Euro travel ban right now, the NBA just suspended their season because French star Rudy Gobert got diagnosed with coronavirus, Europe is a petridish for this virus so all travel from their should be stopped until further notice.

US President Donald Trump has announced sweeping new travel restrictions on Europe in a bid to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

In a televised address, he said travel from 26 European countries would be suspended for the next 30 days.

But he said the "strong but necessary" restrictions would not apply to the UK, where 460 cases of the virus have now been confirmed.

There are 1,135 confirmed cases of the virus across the US, with 38 deaths.

"To keep new cases from entering our shores, we will be suspending all travel from Europe," Mr Trump said from the Oval Office on Wednesday evening.

"The new rules will go into effect Friday at midnight," he added. The travel order does not apply to US citizens.

Mr Trump said the European Union had "failed to take the same precautions" as the US in fighting the virus.

A Presidential Proclamation, published shortly after Mr Trump's speech, specified that the ban applies to anyone who has been in the EU's Schengen border-free area within 14 days prior to their arrival in the US.

This implies that Ireland is excluded from the ban as it is not one of the 26 Schengen countries. Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania are also EU members without being part of the Schengen area.

Mr Trump spoke just hours after Italy - the worst affected country outside China - announced tough new restrictions on its citizens. It will close all shops except food stores and pharmacies as part of its nationwide lockdown.

He said the travel suspension would also "apply to the tremendous amount of trade and cargo" coming from Europe into the US. But he later tweeted to say that "trade will in no way be affected" by the new measures.

Mr Trump also announced plans to provide billions of dollars in loans to small businesses, and urged Congress to pass major tax relief measures in an attempt to stymie the effect of the coronavirus outbreak on the economy.

"We are marshalling the full power of the federal government and the private sector to protect the American people," he said.

What's the situation in the US?
Officials had said the risk of infection was low for the general US public, but concern deepened after a number of new cases were confirmed earlier this month.

Containment efforts have begun in earnest. Troops have been deployed to New Rochelle, just north of New York City, where one outbreak is believed to have originated.

The National Guard will deliver food to some individuals who have been told to self-isolate there.

The governor of Washington state has also banned large gatherings in several counties. The north-western state is the focal point of the outbreak in the US, accounting for 24 of at least 38 deaths across the country.

And in an unprecedented move, the National Basketball Association (NBA) announced that it would suspend the season after Wednesday night's games. The decision came after one player for the Utah Jazz tested positive for the virus.

Shortly after the NBA announcement, the Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks announced that he and his wife had contracted the virus in Australia.

Dr Anthony Fauci, director the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told Congress that the outbreak is "going to get worse", and that depended on the ability to contain those infected.

High medical costs make the virus particularly problematic - many Americans avoid doctor's visits because of unaffordable charges. A lack of paid sick leave is another concern, as are fears about the number of available tests.

But Vice-President Mike Pence, who is in charge of the task force co-ordinating the response to the crisis, has said that "any American can be tested, no restrictions, subject to doctor's orders", and that insurers had promised to offset the charges.

What about the rest of the world?
Earlier on Wednesday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said the outbreak was a pandemic. This is defined as a disease that is spreading in multiple countries around the world at the same time.

WHO chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the number of cases outside China had increased 13-fold in two weeks. He said he was "deeply concerned" by the "alarming levels of inaction".

Media captionCoronavirus outbreak has officially become pandemic says WHO
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte then announced an escalation in the country's ongoing lockdown.

He said the majority of shops as well as bars, hairdressers, restaurants and cafes that could not guarantee a metre's distance between customers would close until 25 March.

Italy has more than 12,000 confirmed cases and a death toll of 827. Nearly 900 people with the virus in Italy were in intensive care, the WHO said.

Elsewhere, Denmark - which has 514 confirmed cases, up 10-fold since Monday - is to close all schools and universities from Friday. The government also urged the cancellation of events with more than 100 people attending.

India suspended most visas for foreigners until 15 April and Guatemala banned European citizens from entering from Thursday.

Meanwhile, the UK is expected to switch to tactics aimed at delaying the spread of the virus rather than containing it.

Denmark's Prime Minister has announced that the country will close all kindergartens, schools and universities for two weeks to slow the spread of coronavirus.

All public sector employees who do not perform critical functions will also be sent home on paid leave.

"This will have huge consequences, but the alternative would be far worse," Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said at a press conference announcing the tough new measures on Wednesday evening, according to the Ekstra Bladet newspaper.

"Under normal circumstances, a government would not present such far-reaching measures without having all the solutions ready for the many Danes concerned, but we are in an extraordinary situation."

The dramatic decision came after the Danish Patient Safety Authority reported 442 new cases of coronavirus on on Wednesday evening, bringing the number of people in quarantine to 1,303.

Frederiksen said that measures to help soften the blow would be announced in due course.

"We will not get through this as a country without a cost. Businesses will close. Some will lose their jobs. We will do what we can to mitigate the consequences for employees," she said.

At the press conference Frederiksen advised everyone in Denmark who is in a position to work from home to do so. The government has also banned all indoor events with 100 or more participants.

Søren Brostrøm, director of the The Danish Health Authority, said that he expected the number of cases to increase rapidly in the coming days and weeks.

"It is not only a threat for Denmark, but for the whole world. That is why the WHO has today declared Covid-19 to be a pandemic," he said, according a report from public broadcaster DR.

"We will see more and more people being infected in the coming time," he said. "An epidemic normally extends to between twelve and sixteen weeks".

In the developed world, Europe and USA are going to suffer a lot. Europe due to their aging population, and the virus effects older people a lot worse. USA due to their terrible medical system and no annual leave or sick leave for many people.

All schools, colleges and childcare facilities in Ireland will close tomorrow until the end of the month, the country's leader has said.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar made the announcement, saying the measures to combat the spread of coronavirus will remain in place until 29 March.

He made a live statement to the nation from Washington DC, where he is due to meet President Donald Trump as part of the annual St Patrick's Day programme of events.

Mr Varadkar said the action had to be taken to try to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

"We are a great nation and we have overcome many trials in the past with our determination, and we will prevail again," he said.

Mr Varadakr said that acting as one nation could save lives and that the economy will suffer, but "we can bounce back".

He added: "I know that some of this is coming as a real shock and it's going to involve big changes in the way we live our lives, and I know I am asking people to make enormous sacrifices.

While schools and colleges are closed, teaching will be done online or remotely.

In addition, indoor gatherings of more than 100 people and outdoor meetings of more than 500 will be cancelled.

Cultural institutions will also be shut.

However, public transport will operate as normal and shops will remain open. Restaurants and cafes likewise, although they should try to implement official advice on social distancing.

Mr Varadkar said that people would be encouraged to work from home, but where people do congregate in offices, break times should be "staggered".

How to contain a global pandemic
Meetings should be done remotely but restaurants, cafes and other businesses can stay open, he added.

"People should seek to reduce social interactions as much as possible," Mr Varadkar said.

People entering the country will be told about the new measures and asked to self-isolate if they begin displaying symptoms.

Mr Varadkar said he was acting on new advice from the country's National Public Health Emergency Team.

He said the government had a duty to protect those most at risk from coronavirus, such as older people and those with underlying conditions.

Health minister Simon Harris said the government was asking older people to reduce their contacts outside their homes.

He added that Ireland had officially moved to the "delay" phase of its response to COVID-19, which aims to reduce the peak impact of the virus and slow its spread.

"We have not witnessed a pandemic of this nature in living memory and this is uncharted territory for us," Mr Varadkar said.

"We said we would take the right actions at the right time and we have to move now to have the greatest impact."

In Pakistan people seem to have the false (?) idea that as soon as summer hits the virus will die out. Ironically this year we are having an extended winter otherwise by mid-March atleast Karachi starts seeing temperatures in the mid to high 30s. Most people aren't taking it too seriously maybe because all of those currently infected had travelled from Iran, Syria or other places in the Middle East.

I hope this nonchalant attitude doesn't lead to disaster.

I believe flights from UK to US aren't cancelled unless things changes in either countries, which I believe is likely.

Apparently USA is under reporting cases....

America is suffering from a serious shortage of testing kits.

America has tested fewer than 2000 people. Meanwhile South Korea has tested 189000 people, and both countries had their first reported case of COVID 19 on the same day !

Thanks. I so far have had fever, sore throat, and body ache. Let's see how it develops.

Yeah. I am going to wait until Friday. If fever doesn't go away, time to call the health provider. I have isolated myself as best as I could.

Ireland are closing schools and universities until the 29th of March, and are banning mass gatherings.

What the hell is the UK Govt doing ? Ireland have a fraction of the cases we do.

Trump said in his speech insurance companies will waive corona virus treatment and testing copay's then later backtracked and said they will only waive testing. This is almost criminal and misinformation, the US government should be sued by those who need treatment because the president said insurance will cover it on national TV! People are dying in record numbers and he is only concerned about his reelection. Freaking idiot.

Coronavirus: Three Leicester City players in isolation after showing symptoms

Three Leicester City first-team players have self-isolated after showing symptoms of coronavirus and "have been kept away from the rest of the squad", manager Brendan Rodgers has said.

Rodgers did not specify which players had been quarantined but added that the club had "followed procedures".

The Foxes are due to play Watford at Vicarage Road in the Premier League on Saturday at 12:45 GMT.

"We had a few players that have shown symptoms and signs," Rodgers said.

"It would be a shame [if the Watford game were postponed], but the public's health is the most important in all of this."

Asked if the game could be played behind closed doors, Rodgers said: "The game is all about the players and the fans and if you have one of those not there, it's obviously not the same."

It is understood the players' symptoms have not yet reached the threshold for coronavirus testing but they will continue to be assessed.

The UK government is expected to announce on Thursday that it is stepping up its response to the pandemic.

It is anticipated the UK will switch to tactics aimed at delaying its spread, rather than containing it, when the government's emergency committee meets.

Delay is the phase in which "social distancing" measures will be considered - which could include restrictions on public gatherings above a certain number of people, although this is not thought likely at this stage.

It comes after the World Health Organization designated the outbreak of the disease a pandemic.

There are 484 confirmed cases in the UK and eight people have died.

Top-flight leagues in Spain and Italy have been postponed, while Wednesday's game between Manchester City and Arsenal was postponed as a "precautionary measure".

Five Gunners players were in self-isolation after meeting Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis.
