The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday rejected four applications filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) seeking secrecy during the scrutiny of its foreign funding sources.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Mohammad Raza also instructed the scrutiny committee to continue its work and instructed PTI representatives to appear before the committee on Oct 14.

PTI’s founding member Akbar S. Babar had filed the case in 2014, alleging that nearly $3 million in illegal foreign funds were collected through two offshore companies and that money was sent through illegal 'hundi' channels from the Middle East to accounts of 'PTI employees'.

He had also alleged that the foreign accounts used to collect funds were concealed from the annual audit reports submitted to the ECP.

The hypocrisy of PTM (Pakistan Tehrik-e-Munafiqat) knows no boundaries. For years and years, Imran Khan lied through his teeth and told the nation that when he will come into power, accountability will start with him. He said that unless accountability starts at the top, you cannot bring any change.

And yet, PTI is fighting tooth and nails to ensure that the case lodged against them is not opened to public scrutiny. If Imran Khan and PTI have nothing to hide and have no skeletons in the closet, why are they desperate for secrecy?

Now it is time for PTI trolls to abuse and humiliate the Chief Election Commissioner and accuse him of being on PMLN’s pay-roll.

Hopefully this will be the beginning of the end of this fake party and their fake tabdeeli.
Bewal Express, this is the true face of your leader and your party. You should be ashamed of supporting them just like I am ashamed of voting for them. However, I am pleased in a way because I did play my part in helping them get exposed at the federal level.

How will Imran Khan explain this in cricketing terms which he loves to do? Is this a no-ball?

Also, full credit to the ECP for not succumbing (so far) to PTI’s bullying tactics.

Its a non issue. Why are you getting excited? All the parties have the same issue!

Wait, I thought everything was run by the army? How is this possible?

This is what happen when you spend entire day living for the sake of criticism.

Disgraceful act by PTI to trying not be transparent in this case. In naya Pakistan everything should be transparent even if it goes against you.

PTI foreign funding case: ECP directs scrutiny committee to submit report by August 17

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has directed a scrutiny committee probing the PTI foreign funding case to submit its report by August 17.

The ECP's order came on the back of a request from Akbar S. Babar, the petitioner in the PTI foreign funding case. The federal body slammed the committee for failing to furnish a report despite it being two years since the 2018 general elections.

Submission of various other petitions by the parties has hampered the committee's work.

The electoral body ordered the scrutiny committee to submit its final report to the commission in the shortest possible time. It was not advisable at this stage to make a decision on the requests of the parties, it added.

The foreign funding case has been with the ECP since November 2014, with more than 70 hearings held to date in this regard. It is one of the most crucial legal battles faced by PTI and would push President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan, the PTI's ex-secretary general and chairperson, respectively, into the corner.

A day earlier, petitioner Babar while speaking to a local media outlet had cited ECP's October 10, 2019, order, which said the ruling party was "guilty of historic abuse of the process of law to delay the case".

The publication had also reported that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja denied reports of having secret meetings with the president. Raja claimed her was "not in the habit of taking such advice" and had neither met Alvi or Khan.

Shouldn't all parties be transparent? The Nooras handed in one A4 sheet and the PPP told us they didn't recognise the courts right to hold hearings.

What is the amount involved? $500,000? Why is it a crime to receive donations from foreign Pakistani's?

It's a nothing case, overseas PK's are OK to put $25bn a year into the Foreign exchange reserves but if they back IK, its a scandal. But if they back Nooras and the PPP, there is no issue.

If it's not such a big deal then why don't PTI just reveal the truth? Why have they been trying to hide things and get the case dismissed?

Contributions to party finances from foreign sources are illegal under election laws. Whether it is $1 or $1 million. PTI has been trying to hide this for over 2 years now.

For a ruling party whose electoral brand roared with calls for accountability, the PTI certainly has no qualms about its vociferous opposition to the investigation–and has left no stone unturned in the process. Why is the PTI bent on lingering and urging for secrecy?

Why just the PTI, All of them must reveal their full accounts not just the PTI. Let all give full audited accounts and if they have broken the law, deal with it.

Agreed but currently PTI is being asked to present this information and they're hiding it

And the others. The Nooras were asked to present their evidence and they gave one A4 sheet and the PPP refused to recognise the EC jurisdiction. I think you just read some newspapers that are paid by the mafia and you get a very biased version. It will be fines all round and warnings for all.

and what have PTI been doing? Can you also let me know what PTI has presented and whether they accepted EC jurisdiction?

I know they are the only ones that presented audited accounts. The whole exercise was to catch out the PTI but they counter attacked and asked everyone to provide their evidences. And now either all 3 are in trouble or non.

Really? When did this happen? Can you share some source of them sharing their audited accounts? Because last I heard was that they approached IHC to challenge the ECP's decision and shared nothing.

By the way, the case of foreign funding was filed in 2014 and till date PTI has presented nothing.

I Know you are desperate for anything but read this passage. It was case created to trap the PTI and its ended up as noose around the necks of the mafia parties.

"The lack of interest of all the three major political parties, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) to pursue the foreign funding case, appears to be a major challenge for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to take the high-profile case to its logical conclusion.
The ECP's scrutiny committee hearing the foreign funding case related to the PTI, the PML-N and the PPP is still awaiting response of the PML-N and the PPP to the questions/objections raised by the committee regarding the evidence both the opposition parties submitted in the case, Business Recorder has learnt.
So far, only the PTI has responded to the relevant queries, while the PML-N and the PPP have not yet submitted replies to the questions raised by the scrutiny committee, an ECP official told Business Recorder.
"But even the PTI is reluctant to pursue the case, which explains why Prime Minister Imran Khan recently moved the Supreme Court challenging ECP's jurisdiction to hear the case," the source said.
Earlier, in September last year, the PTI moved four pleas in the ECP requesting the commission to maintain "secrecy" in the scrutiny of funding details of the ruling party in the case on the grounds that "false" news was being leaked about the PTI funds, which, the ruling party said, was an attempt to malign it.
On October 10, the ECP announced to reject the PTI pleas.
The ECP on November 21, 2019, had decided to accept the request of opposition parties to conduct on daily basis the hearings of the foreign funding case related to the PTI and fixed November 26 as the date to commence proceedings of the case, after a gap of 20 months.
Before the November 26 hearing, the ECP last held the regular hearing of foreign funding case in March 2018 when the scrutiny committee was formed to scrutinise the PTI funds.
The PTI also requested the ECP that the foreign funding case related to the PML-N and the PPP should also be heard by the ECP.
The ECP accepted this demand and also commenced proceedings of foreign funding case related to the PML-N and the PPP from November 26.
The ECP source said that the PML-N and the PPP had strongly stressed the ECP to resume proceedings of foreign funding case related to the PTI but the two opposition parties are not happy with the ECP's decision to also hear foreign funding cases concerning to the PML-N and the PPP.
In November 2014, Akbar Sher Babar, one of the founding members of the PTI, had moved the ECP accusing the PTI of being a foreign-funded party and seeking action against it in accordance with related constitutional provisions.
Shah Khawar is PTI's counsel in the case whereas Ahmad Hassan represents Akbar S Babar. The PML-N is represented by Jahangir Jadoon and the PPP is represented by Shehbaz Khosa"

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2333585/source-of-funding-of-all-political-parties-should-be-made-public-fawad

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain on Sunday demanded that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should make public foreign sources of funding of all political parties.

He said this while addressing a press conference in Islamabad flanked by State Minister for Information Farrukh Habib.

There is no record of donations of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), said the minister, adding that no audit report of the party's Punjab and K-P chapter has been provided either.

"[Former prime minister] Nawaz Sharif donated Rs100 million to PML-N and then PML-N returned Rs45 million back to him... they basically wanted to turn their black money white," he added.

The information minister said that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) spent Rs232 million during the 2018 general elections but it did not provide sources of such a huge amount. "During PPP's tenure, Husain Haqqani, who was Pakistan's Ambassador to the US, used to collect funds for PPP from overseas Pakistanis.”

Fawad urged the ECP to start the scrutiny process from PML-N and PPP but should also include other parties including JUI-F and TLP.

Ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was the only party that had provided complete sourcing of its funding to the ECP, he claimed.

Talking about the upcoming local government elections in Punjab, Fawad said for the first time in the history of Pakistan, mayors would be directly elected in every district of the province. "They will be chief ministers in their respective districts," he remarked.

He said despite differences within the party, Prime Minister Imran Khan fulfilled his promise of providing people with a robust local bodies system, adding that a schedule for the elections would soon be released.

He rejected ECP's position that electronic voting machines (EVMs) cannot be used during the local elections, saying that there will be no problem in conducting them via EVMs at provincial level.

"ECP should take this (EVM) matter seriously now... if it is willing to work for it then the machines can be arranged within two months," he said.

He said that the local government system of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa give the maximum powers to the local tier of the government.

Responding to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah's statements in the Sindh Assembly, Fawad said that it was not appropriate for someone of his stature to give such statements. "He (Murad Ali Shah) often gives such statements which do not suit a chief minister of a province."

Talking about talks with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Fawad said that the state was willing to move forward with those who agree to abide by the Constitution but for those, he added, who are not willing to comply, “we have fought them in the past and can do the same in future too”.

He said that the state has no confusion with regards to TLP and all similar outfits as well.

The minister said that for the first time since 1964, Karachi was doing federal politics instead of regional.

Zardari pointed out on Hamid mir's show that this

Zardari said that this case might be dealt in USA, to which Hamid Mir said which is why Imran Khan is trying to build a counter narrative before.

I watched that interview. For argument's sake lets say IK is lying about the foreign conspiracy, than this is a brilliant move. And people say IK does not know politics.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is expected to announce the verdict in the PTI foreign funding case this week as pressure mounts on the constitutional body from the ruling alliance after the explosive Financial Times article on the Imran Khan-led party's funding.

The UK paper revealed that the PTI received funding from Wootton Cricket Club of Abraaj founder Arif Naqvi which was generated through a charity match and an Arab personality.

The FT report provided ammunition to the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and they demanded an early announcement of the verdict which was reserved on June 21.

ECP officials told Daly Jang , on the condition of anonymity, that the Election Commission will announce the foreign funding verdict during the first week of August.

The sources said that the PTI will only harm itself if it files a reference against Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja as certain matters which were earlier hidden from public view would be revealed during the hearings.

They said that the ECP is a constitutional body and will continue to follow the constitutional path.

“The ECP will not bow to any blackmailing and will not come under any pressure. No political party is a favourite of the Election Commission neither nor any is non-favourite. Those who are following the law are standing with the ECP.”

When the attention of these sources was drawn to the announcement of PTI Chairman Imran Khan to file a judicial reference against the Election Commission of Pakistan and the CEC, they said that this was an attempt to create a smoke screen ahead of the verdict.

The investigations into international money laundering have been completed, they added.
