The Indian government has come up with yet another ingenious solution for its growing civic issues. The Modi-led administration has rolled out an extensive programme with the aim of giving each cow in the country a unique 12-digit identification number which is quite similar to an Aadhaar card for Indian citizens.

Starting this year, nearly 100,000 technicians equipped with tablets will fan out across the country with the mission to tag each of the staggering 88 million cows and buffaloes with a unique identification number. And they have only a year to get the job done.

The purpose, as per Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, is to provide an easier and efficient way of vaccination and scientific intervention that result in better breeding and increased milk production, in the hopes of doubling daily farmer’s income by 2022.

Once tagged, technician will upload all information of the animal to an online database that includes details such as breed, vaccination status and details of the owner.

It is worth mentioning that the administration has set aside a massive INR 148 crore or approximately $22 million for the task.

100,000 technicians attempting to tag and record all the details of 88 million cows and bulls in one year, whilst the majority of adult female cows out of that 88 million can/will also give birth on average once per year.

Meaning that before the initial 12 months are even up, millions of those already tagged would have died/ been slaughtered, whilst tens of millions of new births, all requiring to be tagged, would have already taken place. And this would be the case on a continuous basis.

Those 100,000 technicians have a job for life!

Calling it a number plate is so misleading. Conjures up images of millions of cows with 'Applied for Registration' labels roaming all over India :maqsood

Wow thats a lot of cows. Can't be a bad thing, if you're going to keep that many cows then you should be also willing to take care of them. At least its not another giant expensive statue .

Whatever the Hindutva types' beef with beef, Indian Muslims shouldn't be cowed by these acts, and should instead adopt a bullish posture.

I'm impressed, who'd have thought tagging these animals could lead to doubling dairy farmers incomes by 2022? Anything that will lead to a decrease in suicides in India's farming community should be applauded.

I wonder if we have a similar system in the UK? Our farmers are always complaining that they are running on losses and considering the ordinary tax payer has to heavily subsidise them, surely it would be in everyone's interest if they could double their incomes similarly?

Well one can look at it this way that Modi ji the supreme leader instantly created 100,000 semi skilled jobs for the unemployed youth even if it is a dumb move like this. All hail Modi ji..

I hope the unemployed youth milk this opportunity

With Modi's latest moves, the steaks have been raised. He's udderly serious about all this.

Also while Modi's exploits make for great reading, I'm waiting for the moovie version. It will be a blockbuster. A bull dozer almost.

I have a sense of deja moo that this scheme will also fall flat on its face

This is not a new scheme, kerala government implemented this scheme successfully , dairy farmers are getting benefits like insurance for animals, subsidy for cattle feeds and assistance of vets etc.

That said, I wonder how he will react to the recent warming of relations between Islamabad and MosCow.

And we will soon give them bank accounts LOL

On a serious note, do other developed countries have similar system?
Good to see that this has nothing to do with ban on beef etc. But the success of any scheme depends largely on implementation - something we Indians are good at messing up. Hopefully this scheme will benefit farmers and not just politicians.

Meat loving Degenerate Mallu (Keralite) here .. Does that mean once the BeefID comes, I can track the name and family members of the poor bovine who satisfied my hunger for lunch ??
To express my guilt and pay respects maybe :13: "Luke, I Killed your father ! :110:

It's one thing to have an initial publicity driven drive with these technicians going from house to house and farm to farm tagging all cows and entering their details onto a system, but on an ongoing basis can you just see the rural farmer, or every villager with a pregnant cow, running off to the nearest town with a cow-tagging office (if they don't have an internet connection and/or their own login and can't do so online) to register the birth of their newborn calf and also make an appointment for a technician to come to their farm / village / home to tag the newborn animal?

Once tagged, technician will upload all information of the animal to an online database that includes details such as breed, vaccination status and details of the owner.
So every time a cow or bull dies, is slaughtered, is bought/sold (and a new birth takes place as per above comment) and/or vaccinated the details will need to be entered/updated on the system!

What with the glut of fake mews we've had recently, this so-called mews article could well be a cownspiracy theory.

The dairy industry is a major contributor to India's economy and so it does make sense to have a system of registration for cattle and cows.

Why do you call it dumb move? I guess we should take care of our animals. Modi should also build some shelters for these where these can be taken care of. Cows are very good resources for many milk products.

India can try hard to become a superpower, but it will go nowhere with its sad devotion to cows in this day and age.

How is it sad? They are trying to take care of them. It's better than providing empty lip service to cow rights on every Eid.

Quite a mootivational thing you said there

Hmm interesting.. If it helps in generating twice as much dairy and also creates 100,000 jobs then it's a master stroke..
