Former Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed has joined West Indies cricket team as their new bowling coach, the agency representing him confirmed on Tuesday.

As per details, he is expected to join the Windies squad this month on a short-term appointment that can be converted into a long-term position.

Ahmed has worked in coaching positions with Pakistan Super League, Indian Premier League, Surrey as well as the English Cricket Board. During his tenure with England as a spin consultant for six years, the team won the T20 World Cup and multiple Ashes.

“It’s a privilege to work with West Indies cricket team. A team with a very rich history of class, commitment and sheer dominance in the cricket world. The talent from this part of the world has been exceptional and I am quite excited to work with them,” Ahmed said.

Ahmed has been working with the Pakistan Cricket Board and is currently serving as the head coach of Pakistan Cricket Academy.

He could help Bishoo who has potential but hasn't done much to back it up.

A very good appointment for them. Didn't they have Saqi for a while as well?

I’m very happy for mushy and windies. But when I first read this I just had a feeling of sadness about this loss for Pakistan cricket and the coaching team. I’m not convinced of the skills of batting coach grant flower (as a coach). The fast bowling coach Azhar seems ok but only because mo Akram and aaqib made no discernible difference to any bowler. But mushy’s pedigree is second to non. Apart from being a World Cup winning bowler and for a long time being neck and neck with Warne as the best spin bowler in early 90’s he’s been a giant in English county circuit and an absolute key member of English coaching team. In other words he is a true elite coach having worked in a variety of boards of the last decade. So just when we have Yasir and shadab going strong we lose mushy to windies. This seems like a step backwards and I hope there’s nothing untoward going on behind the scenes in pcb.

I think Mushy is trying to become the first ever cricketer to have worked for every single cricket board.

This is a one month deal.

Kind of surprised. Currently feel like Mushtaq is the most in demand spin coach, has had glowing praises everywhere he's worked.

So surprised West Indies out of all countries have nabbed him, thought it'd be one of the richer boards, or Pakistan themselves.

I guess maybe he just wants a new experience each time so working in several countries suits him.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua- Former Pakistan spin maestro, Mushtaq Ahmed will spend 4-weeks in the Caribbean from May 10 – June 7 to work with the current squads training.

CWI approached Mushtaq to get involved in the high-performance program, with him agreeing to come initially for a 4-week stint. During this time, he will spend time with all our high-performance squads – International, “A” team and Women’s. His time in the region fits perfectly with all the squads training for their respective tours.

His arrival ties in with the on-going high-performance program “where we want to provide the best coaches for our players” according to CWI Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams.

Adams continued that “although this initial stint is four weeks both parties are already discussing the possibility of engaging Ahmed on a more regular basis in the future, not only to work with our players but just as importantly with our coaches in the region.

Nine technical coaches are currently contracted by CWI for our major teams, the WINDIES Senior Men’s, WINDIES Senior Women’s and the WINDIES A Teams, who will all shadow Ahmed during his session.

Adams, who is delighted with the selection, says “I am pleased to welcome Mushtaq Ahmed into the Caribbean and look forward to his upcoming period with our elite squads. Mushtaq comes with a wealth of experience of having worked for a long time with elite level spinners and I am sure he will add value to our High-Performance programs. I am hopeful that we can engage Mushtaq beyond this initial 4-week period and have him here in the West Indies on a more consistent basis sharing his expertise with both players and coaches across the region.”

Ahmed has successfully worked with international and fringe players in both Pakistan and the UK and is recognized as a top-quality spin bowling coach.

St John’s, ANTIGUA – Cricket West Indies is investing in two regional spin bowling camps, using the services of legendary former Pakistan leg-spinner and current West Indies spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed. This is part of a new coaching investment programme to focus on improving players’ skills for those that are breaking through to elite level cricket and follows recent white ball/T20 skills and red ball camps which took place in Antigua.

The two regional spinners camp are taking place in Antigua & Trinidad and Tobago. The Antigua camp commenced on July 20th and concludes on July 27th featuring current West Indies ‘A’ squad participants Rahkeem Cornwall (Leeward Islands), Roston Chase (Barbados) and Khary Pierre (Trinidad and Tobago). They are joined by Joshua Bishop (Barbados), Gudakesh Motie (Guyana), Keron Cottoy (Windward Islands), Larry Edwards (Windward Islands), Akim Frazer (Jamaica) and Chaim Holder (Barbados).

The camp in Trinidad and Tobago runs from 29th July to 3rd August and will feature solely local spinners who are Imran Khan, Yannick Cariah, Yannick Ottley, Akeal Hosein and Kissoondath Magram.

The camps have been organized by CWI to assist in the development of our regional spinners. CWI has also included regional coaches in the sessions to assist Mushtaq Ahmed and also to develop their coaching development.

Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams:

To have Mushtaq involved in our spin bowling programs is invaluable. His past record as a world class player and coach points to someone who can make a tangible contribution to the development of our spinners and the coaches who work with them. We hope that this relationship with Mushtaq can be extended beyond the current term for the benefit of our regional players and coaches.

Spin Bowling Coach, Mushtaq Ahmed:

We are looking for spinners that can play a role in one day cricket bowling in the middle overs, while also making the slow bowling bench strength strong.

So the whole point is not just to focus on national team spin bowling options, but also in domestic cricket where having improved quality spinners will also help the local batsmen.

The potential effect here will be when West Indies play in the sub continent, their batsmen will play spin more confidently and bowlers will develop wicket taking skills.

Well done, West Indies. They haven't had a proper spinner in a while. They need some good spinners for 2023 World Cup.

I feel sad when I see the likes of Mushy working for other Boards, but you can't blame them for this. Also Mushy has done a fair bit of work for PCB over the years.

Really good appointment by WI. I hope he stays there for a long time, it's sad to see WI struggle and I hope he can help with the development of their spinners so they can be more competitive in the coming world tournaments in Asian conditions.

It is easier to work with non-Asian team because there is less pressure and pay is generally better.
