• Director – High Performance Nadeem Khan to hold media conference at National Stadium today (Monday) at 1400, which will be live-streamed on PCB’s Facebook and YouTube channels

Karachi, 28 September 2020:

The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced transparent 2020-21 contracts for 192 domestic players, which were based strictly on criteria, performance and forward-looking approach.

From the 192 players, 10 have been awarded A Plus category comprising leading performers from the 2019-20 first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and players part of the national squad but without a central or emerging contract.

These players are: Bilal Asif (Central Punjab), Fahim Ashraf (Central Punjab), Fawad Alam (Sindh), Imran Butt (Balochistan), Imran Khan Snr (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Kashif Bhatti (Balochistan), Khushdil Shah (Southern Punjab), Nauman Ali (Northern), Sohail Khan (Sindh) and Zafar Gohar (Central Punjab).

Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan men’s national team head coach and chief selector, who selected players for the A Plus category, said: “I want to congratulate the 10 players for securing the newly-introduced A Plus category contracts, which is a reward for their efforts and hard work in the 2019-20 season that either earned them recognition in domestic cricket or places in the Pakistan men’s national team.

“I accept there will be a few players who will feel hard done but we could only pick a maximum of 10 players in this category. I want to assure every high-performing player that he will remain available for selection in the side and depending on how he performs in the 2020-21 season, will be in line for an increment next year.

“We want to make Pakistan cricket tough, competitive and performance-based, and this slab-based retainer policy is a reflection of this strategy. I am confident this will induce more passion amongst the players, which, in turn, will not only benefit the players but also Pakistan cricket.”

Category A comprises 38 players, including 10 best performers from the 2019-20 domestic season or the ones who have previously represented Pakistan at the highest-level. Category B includes 47 players who have played T20Is, are amongst the top 10 performers of the National T20 Cup (First XI) 2019-20, had a good first-class season in 2019-20 or have represented Pakistan Shaheens/Emerging since 2019.

Category C includes 71 players who either featured in HBL PSL 2019 and 2020, were amongst the performers of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (First and Second XI) 2019-20 performers, top 10 performers of the Pakistan Cup 2018-19, best batsman/bowler of Patron’s Trophy Grade-II 2018-19 or have represented Pakistan in age-group cricket.

Category D boasts all other 26 players who are part of the six Cricket Association sides.

PCB Director – High Performance, Nadeem Khan: “I have always believed and emphasised on criteria and performance-based contracts and this is reflective in the 2020-21 domestic player contract categories.

“While setting up the criteria, we have also moved from a fixed slab retainer structure to a category-based retainer structure because I think it is fair on leading or experienced players to be treated and paid differently to a beginner or a starter. Furthermore, this is also consistent to how we offer central contracts to our elite cricketers.

“Through this model, we have also ensured we retain and protect our age-group cricketers, who in the past have dropped out either due to non-selection or non-recognition. These eight U19 cricketers who played in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020 and 11 Emerging/Shaheen players will now remain part of the system and will get their opportunities to improve and move in an upward direction.

“From these 192 domestic contracted players, 146 cricketers are those who were without any jobs while 24 had contractual employments. This indicates that the PCB looks after the wellbeing of all the talented and high-performing cricketers and remains on track to introducing professionalism in cricket, which is the only way to excellence.”

What? Good to see Imran Butt, Khushdil, and Zafar Gohar, but why is Sami Aslam ignored! How are Imran and Sohail Khan high performing?

Criteria - Top scorer, best bowler and best player of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2019-20; part of Test squad but without a central or emerging contract; part of current Pakistan squads who also feature in future plans

At least the criteria is transparent :facepalm

I have to say, I like the direction from PCB with transparent criteria, they just have the wrong person at the helm making decisions under those criteria...

The money has to improve and keep up with the inflation which exists in Pakistan now.

Bilal Asif, Fahim Ashraf, Imran Khan, Sohail Khan, Kashif Bhatti in A+ Category lol :))

Barring Fahim, the rest are in their mid 30's especially Sohail at 36 and they are getting the top package by PCB.

PCB seem to do one decent thing and then go back by 3 steps.

What well-groomed, educated person will want to take up cricket professionally when your starting salary is 40,000 Rs. and maxes out at 85,000?

Or, in other words:

Starting: 240$
Max: 500$.

WHAT THE HELL?

All money keeps going to PCB bosses, administration and PSL.

No way on earth PAK is becoming a top international cricket team until the minimum amount is more than $1000 for a domestic cricketer.

Imran Khan a top performer in the 2019/20 QEA ? He averaged 50 with the ball.

Only in Pakistan an alleged 33 year old fast bowler cpuld be considered as part of "future plans".

When 36 and 33 year old pacers are not considered good enough to support main bowling and we had to play two teenagers in Aus and Eng then what kind of future plans are they part of?

Wasim Khan needs to have atleast one eye towards International cricket and future plans regarding that. I cant understand when 19,20 year old bowlers are leading the test attack how can 33, 36 year old pacers can be part of future plans. Pacers on bench and future plans should be in 20s, if you have selected 33, 36 years old then play them and see them perform otherwise there is no point.

Same is the case with 35 year old Bilal Asif as part of future plans. Zafar in A+ is a positive though and good to see Sajid Khan (Potentially a better off spinner than Bilal) in category A.

Misbah input probably!!!!Misbah treat these oldies like wine. According to him players get better with age just like wine gets rich in taste with time.

Waiting for Major to defend these category specially Imran Khan. Sohail Khan and Bhatti!!!! May be he knows more than us.

There are match fees as well. Secondly $1000 is equitable to Rs 160,000 which is a very high salary in Pakistan.

These are top athletes in Pakiatan. Stop comparing this with normal jobs, fewer chances, short span of time, injury risk, and no alternative,

I will defend it instead. Please read my first post on this thread if you have any doubts about my biases.

The criteria is very, very transparent. It makes complete sense. Of course if someone is part of the Aussie test squad for example but no central contract, they will get an A+ domestic contract.

Secondly players are told very categorically what they need to do to get upgraded in category. Top 10 performers for National T20 get category B, for example. Top 10 in QAE get category A. The stats are there for all to see so it is very transparent and results-based. If you get into Shaheens, you get a certain category, you play T20I a certain category, and you play Tests without central contract a certain category. It all makes sense. Issue is with the person deciding who plays the Tests.

Criteria itself is fine. That’s what this thread is about. Hat’s off to PCB, they have done a good job of keeping FC and Test Cricket as the ultimate incentive, so players begin building their games for the longer formats to get bumps in domestic contracts.

At the end of the day, this is exactly what the criteria should look like. Award the performers, and award the national Test squad most. I believe it is just the names Imran and Sohail Khan that leave a bad taste when looking at the criteria right now, and the question must go to Misbah on this.

No they are not. C and D contracts are relatively rookie cricketers who are as of yet unproven. But even Rs 65,000 is an extremely respectable amount to earn per month, and then you must also include match fees, man of the match awards, and tournament awards. You do realize per match fees are Rs 40,000 for T20 and One-Day and Rs 60,000 for QeA trophy?

A+ and A cricketers are earning an insane amount at 150,000 and 85,000 respectively per month. And this amount will continue to increase year-on-year as PSL generates more funds and PCB has more to spend.

To summarize, a D contract cricketer will earn more in 3 first class matches than an A+ cricketer who is benched temporarily. The entire system is performance based.

Many here can criticize for the sake of it but I believe these criteria are the start of a new chapter in Pakistan. If you ignore 10 names in the A+ category (which is to the full blame of the Chief Selector), all the other 182 names are divided excellently into categories with appropriate incentives to perform and move up ahead to a new pay level. It will do wonders for domestic competition and these pay levels will no doubt rise in years to come.

You cannot completely discard experienced players in domestic cricket, young domestic cricketers will benefit from the presence of experienced cricketers who have played international cricket. The only scrutiny to perform is the recent domestic form of these 33 and 36 year old pacers.

criteria seems to be friends with Misbah....

Sohail khan and imran khan , i think these two will play for another 5 years or until loser Misbah is available..

Agree with this.

You can't blame the PCB. The pay structure makes perfect sense and is based on performance.

Sadly Misbah must be blamed for the players who sneak into the top categories not through any performance based criteria but because he selects them for international squads as his pals.

Hopefully the PCB see what's going on and sack Misbah for the sake of Pakistan cricket.

Everything that the PCB are doing is golden, but Misbah's appointment always comes around to sabotage all this good work.

I completely agree and have always backed some experience at domestic level. My problem is with Misbah saying that (A+ category) these 33, 36 year old pacers are part of future plans. You cant have 18,20 year old pacers leading the test attack and having 33,36 year old pacers on the bench as reserves. If they are good they should be leading the attack and if they arent then at this age they shouldnt be in the team.

They should play domestic cricket and mentor young pacers, I have no issue at all with that. Also rather than giving Imran and Sohail A+ contracts, they should be given at max A contracts and then extra salary for being a mentor.

I think its Misbah's insist. But I guess ignoring Sami Aslam is a good choice for 2 reasons: 1. Mocking PCB
2. A timid player with turtle pace batting plus waste too much balls and then gift his wicket after 40+ runs

I think Misbah beleive A pacer can perform even at age of 45-50 which is not even possible for batsman. 35 should be retire age of any player unless they play as good as De Silva/Murali/Anderson.

Also its highly unlikely PCB will sack Misbah since he has strong political support. They are doing everything to make him successful but if he keep selecting useless oldies and timid players then we are bound to fail.

Not sure what everyone else views is but I think anyone who mocks the employees should face disciplinary its goes against code of conduct

Actually, the domestic contract given to Imran and Sohail Khan is not a separate decision that was made recently. They actually earned the A+ contract two months ago when Misbah selected them in the Test squad.

The criteria is very simple. If you are in the Test squad, and don’t have a central contract, you get an A+ domestic contract.

Ideally, Misbah would have called up Sami Aslam and Sameen Gul for the England tour in July. If he had done so, the announcement yesterday would have Sameen and Sami as A+ contracts instead of Imran and Sohail.

Because of Misbah’s selection policies, not only did they miss out on the test squad but now they also only have A and B domestic contracts respectively.

I fink the process how they selected the A+ contract is decent enough I dont see much wrong in selecting them in that category based on the England squad

Reportedly Shoaib Akhtar is working with the PCB on a framework to bring sponsorships into domestic cricket, up to Rs 2 crore per region. The goal is to develop infrastructure and increase player salaries even further in coming years.
