Just a fun discussion. Who do you think of the currently playing cricketers or the recently retired ones who will pursue coaching careers and will end up becoming really good ones. Should not include the guys who have already started coaching at a high level or leagues like Mahela or Hussey.

Supremely good players don't necessarily make good coaches, like Kapil Dev, Greg Chappel or Javed Miandad. Similarly, Gillespie has made a lot of strides in being known as a really good coach in comparison to an ATG Glenn Mcgrath who has had limited success at MRF academy. Making Andy Flower and Gary Kirsten coaches of the national teams were a masterstroke by ECB and BCCI as both had no prior coaching experience yet they took their respective teams to unprecedented heights. Guys like Shane Bond and Allan Donald commonly known as the one of the best bowlers of their countries have found great success as bowling coaches.

So here are the guys I think might make good coaches in future.
Ian Bell
Kyle Mills
Peter Fulton
Younis Khan
Peter Siddle
Chris Rogers

I think Gautam gambhir can be a good coach down the line. Other choices that I can think of
Graeme Smith
Shaun Pollock

Shoaib Malik,

Rahul Dravid,

Younis Khan,

Ricky ponting,

Kallis,

Zaheer Khan,

James Anderson.

Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid already has had quite a few coaching appointments, first with Rajasthan Royals, then Delhi Daredevils. And more recently, india u19 and India A. He already has shown himself to be very good at nurturing youngsters.

Punter and Kallis have already had coaching stints in IPL with Mumbai and Kolkatta, and have been quite successful.

Yes Gambhir seems to be a very good person for a coach, with management skills, proper technique, knowledge, adaptability and grit. For some reason he reminds me of Kirsten. Maybe cause of his doggedness.

Dhoni , Shoaib Akhtar , hafeez , Cook ,

Shoaib appears to be a bit too ill tempered and volatile to fit into coaching frame sadly plus he also said he doesnt want to work for PCB ever. Hopefully he will calm down and take up coaching and doesn't end up like Wasim. Waqar has been the only past great alongwith Inzi who has put his hand up for the cause of Pakistan Cricket.

Kumar Sangakkara and Imran Khan would be instantly five star coaches if any of them decide to. They would be defintely the best coaches of their countries.

Imran is far too deep in his political career to come back to cricket. Plus at his age(65), a younger and proactive coach would be better. Imran by his own admission hasn't followed cricket for quite a few years now.

Well obviously he can’t become a coach because he’s busy. But his leadership skills and excellence of cricket make him a five star coach. You can’t get a better man from Pakistan to train a cricket team than Imran Khan. He is well respected, well honored, and very well charismatic. I sincerely hope he wins the ultimate match which is the 2018 Elections.

Sangarakara has potential. And speaking about imran khan, should have stuck to cricket. Would have loved to see him as a coach.

Several of the current or just retired players may just not be interested in the riggers of national coaching. They make/made a good amount of money during their playing days that may not want to do it for just a $million or less.

In fact I would say the likes of Dhoni or Kohli (maybe a few others as well) will be involved in the game in a different capacity. As team owners. I would say that they will become part owners of an IPL team. This gives them the chance to stay involved in the game and multiply their wealth several times over. A million $ coaching job will mean nothing to their bank accounts.

I think that in the not too distant future the coaching focus is going to shift to getting jobs in T20 leagues as less and less of Test cricket will be played. The potential coaches are going to position themselves for the T20 job. I think it's already happening.

There will always be people who would relish the challenge for the tougher and hands on jobs. Just like there are Test specialists in this era of T20 cricket, there will always be guys who will be looking towards coaching at the highest level. Rahul Dravid and Langer are the examples.
