Cape Town - Proteas fast bowler Dale Steyn, who is still recovering from a shoulder injury, has ruled himself out of the Test series against England later this year.

The Proteas will play four Tests against England, starting in early July, and Steyn was selected in an SA 'A' squad who will also tour the UK to get some much needed match practice.

However, the right-arm paceman has withdrawn from those matches and wants to concentrate on getting back to full fitness for the home season that starts with a series against Bangladesh in September.

The 33-year-old injured a bone in his right shoulder in the first Test against Australia in November last year and has not played any cricket since.

Steyn said at the CSA Awards on Saturday: "My recovery is going well but it is taking a little longer than I expected it to.

"I am able to do a lot of things, like running, hiking and gym work, but bowling is not one of them, and I won't be ready in time (for England).

"Obviously, one of the reasons for me playing with the A side was so that I could get some match fitness before the Tests. So, before that Bangladesh series, I will need to play a bit."

Oh damn, looks like if we beat the South Africans again it will be put down as 'meaning nothing as they weren't at full strength' again. :mv

Steyn being out is a blow. But rabada and vernon will still cause problems.

Steyn is not at full strength these days regardless, I think the bitter spill to swallow here is that the annoying silver spooned flower boy aka Joey Root will be the first England captain in like forever to dethrone the Saffers at home. It will be high calibre series win :afridi SA are very strong and have done well to regroup after the retirements of some big names, Rabada is an adequate replacement for Steyn looking ahead and the man has buckets of talent

He should take as much rest as possible. South Africa aren't doing too bad with him! I don't want him to back back quickly, have a bad series and retire on a small note.

England are winning the series with or without Steyn.

Steyn knows England would give him.phainta like they always do. Why would he come just to get battered again in england by King Root. He should stay at home and bully the Bangla Boys when they tour.

shaz619 i still remember when KP smashed him in 2012 in that Headingley Test. Steyn looked clueless he was KPs bunny.

shaz619 if it wasnt for that texting scandal KP would have smashed Steyn again.

Those innings just highlight KP's greatness man only he was capable of playing those insane knocks, Steyn went from a lion to a little billy that began to squeal

And he'd smash him in 2017 as well, Steyn is still haunted by the ghost of KP even though he's not in the England team so he much rather feast on the Bangla boys and then roar with great might as if he was the one to beat George Foreman in Zaire and not Ali

Pietersen's trigger movement shielded him against Steyn's out-swingers, who doesn't have any other variations up his locker, unless the ball starts to reverse.

shaz619 not surprised this is Saffers ki zehniyat. when the going gets tough. The Saffers crumple.

shaz619 the Crown will vanquish the Saffers once and for all.

Steyn's best days are over. Gone are the days when he would bowl between 140 and 150 KPH.

Today he bowls between 130 and 138 kph

Like his decision.

Want him to play 2-3 years atleast and break McGrath's record. He deserves it.

Pace bowlers not named McGrath are done after taking 400 wickets
