Cricket rallies around Aussie great Martyn after hospitalisation

Well wishes are flowing for the 2003 World Cup winner after he was hospitalised in Brisbane with a serious illness

Australia's cricket community is rallying around Damien Martyn after the cricket great was hospitalised suddenly in Brisbane.

The 54-year-old former right-handed batter is in an induced coma amid a bout of meningitis having fallen ill in recent days.

"I'm saddened to hear of Damien's illness. The best wishes of everyone at Cricket Australia and in the wider cricket community are with him at this time," the governing body's CEO Todd Greenberg said in a statement.

Adam Gilchrist, Martyn's close friend and former Australian and WA teammate, confirmed on behalf of his family the 2003 World Cup winner was receiving treatment in hospital.

"He is getting the best of treatment and (Martyn's partner) Amanda and his family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and best wishes," Gilchrist said.

Martyn's seemingly effortless stroke play was his calling card, averaging 46.37 with the bat across 67 Tests for Australia.

Born in Darwin, the right-hander earned a Test debut at 21, replacing the late Dean Jones in the 1992-93 home series against West Indies and was Western Australia's captain at 23.

He was player of the series the last time Australia won an away series in India, top scoring in four of Australia's eight innings in the 2004 Border-Gavaskar Trophy battle.

His high score of 165 came against New Zealand in 2005, one of 13 Test centuries Martyn made during his time in the Baggy Green.

Martyn played his final Test in Australia's famous win at Adelaide Oval in the 2006-07 Ashes series before suddenly retiring ahead of the third Test of a 5-0 whitewash over England.

Former Australian teammate Darren Lehmann led the well wishes for Martyn on social media after news broke of his illness.

"Lots of love and prayers sending Damien Martyn's way. Keep strong and fighting legend," he wrote on Twitter.

Speaking on 6PR radio, former Test bowler Rodney Hogg called Martyn's hospitalisation "shocking news".

"We wish him all the best," the former Australian paceman said.

Martyn also excelled in the 50-over format during a 16-year career at the top level and averaged more than 40 in 208 ODIs for Australia.

He was part of Australia's team that won the 2003 World Cup in South Africa, scoring an unbeaten 88 in a 234-run stand with captain Ricky Ponting in the final against India.

Martyn dabbled in commentary in retirement but has mostly kept out of the limelight in recent years.

Let's hope for a speedy recovery. A brilliant player to watch- he and Mark Waugh were like Glen Hoddle- easy on the eye

Wishing Martyn a speedy recovery. He was such a nice timer of the ball always a treat to watch and played some great knocks against us in Tests.

Australian cricket legend Damien Martyn wakes up from coma

Former Australian cricketer Damien Martyn has woken from a medically induced coma and is showing strong signs of recovery. His former teammate Adam Gilchrist confirmed that Martyn is now able to speak and respond to treatment, a day after his family shared an encouraging update.

Martyn, a member of Australia’s 2003 ODI World Cup-winning squad, was diagnosed with meningitis — an infection that causes inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord and can lead to dangerous swelling. Doctors placed him in an induced coma as part of his treatment.

Speaking to Code Sports, as reported by Fox Sports, Gilchrist said Martyn’s recovery since coming out of the coma has been remarkable. “He has responded extraordinarily well since coming out, to the point where his family feels it’s almost a miracle,” Gilchrist said. “The progress has been so positive that they’re hopeful he can move from the ICU to another part of the hospital, which shows how quickly things have turned around.”

Gilchrist also revealed that he remained in contact with Martyn’s partner, Amanda, throughout the recovery process. “Amanda wanted to pass on that she truly believes the love, goodwill and care shown through messages and media coverage really helped him,” Gilchrist said. “They feel incredibly blessed by the support during this difficult time.”

While Martyn has regained consciousness, he will continue to remain in hospital as treatment continues. “He’ll stay in hospital, but the turnaround has been nothing short of miraculous,” Gilchrist added.

The 54-year-old former right-handed batter represented Australia in 67 Test matches. Earlier reports had confirmed he was placed in an induced coma following the illness.

Hoping for his speedy recovery. Very classy batsman he was remembering him from early 2000s and 2005 ashes.

Wishing him a speedy recovery.
As mentioned by posters already, he was one of the most elegant batsmen of his time, especially unique in that Aussie line up where majority of the batsmen were known more for bludgeoning the ball with authority. He on the other hand was all about gentle touches.

One thing I noticed about him was that whereas other flashy batters around him all kind of shadowed him throughout his career, he seemed to do well when others didn’t. Whenever Aussie batting was in trouble, Damien would generally ball Australia out and at all surfaces he it the spinning pitches of India or the bunch pitches of South Africa. He had the batting talent to do well everywhere.
