What's new

Daniel Vettori or Rangana Herath, who would you pick in Tests?

Herath

Dunno why but never rated Vettori and never liked him either

Also never understood what's so good about his bowing

Whenever I saw him bowl he never took many wickets

Herath.

I liked Vettori a lot though. Maybe due to slight likedness towards NZ players during childhood days. Was one of their best players in that team.

If there was a poll, Dan would have probably got one vote in his favour, for his ability to bat at 7; not sure how many others would have voted against an spinners whose last 60 Tests has a stats around 300+ wickets @<25 with 25+ 5fors & 6 or 7 10fors.

Lol Junaids would have been that voter.

Herath as a bowler, but what Vettori brings in terms of all round capability and leading/managing a team is up there with Imran Khan albeit with less talent.

Herath by miles.
Better Average, strike rate, econ.

Vetori's stats is worse than Shakib in all those category. The only reason he would be a better SLA than Shakib because of playing in NZ pitches and not Asian pitches.

Herath easily if its about test

I really liked vettori a lot for his short rhythmic run-up and popped-out tongue gesture....one of the coolest cricketer ever

But his tight line bowling really suits in LOI's more

Vettori was just miserly, not much wicket taking ability. Herath definitely is one of the all time best SLA. Vettori though might have been better had he played more in the subcontinent. Major flaw with Vettori was when he went around the wicket he walked in straight wheras other SLAs would trot across the umpire. As a result Vettori never came too close to the stumps which I feel made him less effective.

Definitely Herath in tests. Vettori was a better limited overs bowler.

Just 305 wickets in 295 ODIs and a ER of 4.17 and average of almost 32.

Even, Afridi has almost similar stats as an ODI bowler.

Vettori could deceive the batsman in flight while Afridi couldn't. That's why it was very difficult for players to smash Vettori. The thing with Vettori is that he got better and better with his variations with increase in overall scoring rates. Here are the numbers for last 10 years

Furthermore, less minnow bashing in Vettori's case. There is a reason that Vettori on average has stayed 70-80 ranking points ahead of Afridi throughout his career.

Afridi was an all-rounder who did not even bowl seriously until 2005.

Afridi wipes the floor with Vittori as an ODI cricketer.

Not that I am a fan of Afridi but even as an all-rounder he almost matched Vetorri's stats. Vettori was no doubt economical but he was never a match-winner.

People should understand that Vettori's stats arent as good because he played a lot in NZ, not many spinners get wickets in NZ, ODIs or tests. But still I think Herath is a better bowler in tests.

Tests: Herath
LOIs: Vettori

Depends on the requirement of the team, if my team has good pace/swing bowlers and they need a bowler to hold an end so that other bowlers could be rotated from another end then I would go for Vettori. Also with vettori I could go for 5 bowlers with 1 spinner and 4 pace bowler as Vettori was a handy batsmen. But if my team does not have good pace/swing bowlers then I would go for Herath

With all due respect to Vettori who was so much more than just a full time spinner for New Zealand with his reliable batting down the order, leadership quality, Rangana Herath's just a phenomenal wicket taker and a match winner. He is arguably the best spinner in the world and has been for some time now. I can think of so many tests he won for Sri Lanka single handedly when the other team was so much better overall.

Rangana in tests and vettori in LOIs.

Vettori the LOI bowler is under rated.

Not a fair comparison, they are two different players. DV was a genuine spinning all-rounder and RH is a specialist bowler. RH is probably the better bowler and by some distance, but DV is a better batsman by the same distance.

This one is easy I think.
In Sri Lanka it's Herath all the way, everywhere else it's Vettori.
An average of 38 away from home isn't anywhere near good enough.

Herath he is a million miles better than Vettori who was mainly an economic defensive spinner.

Herath averages under 30 in only one country away, 29 in Pakistan.
Vettori averages under 30 in 5 including Sri Lanka with an overall average of 34.

But Herath is "miles" better. Yeah right.
