Cullinan and Thorpe both were backbones of the middle order for their respective teams.
Both had very good techniques and have done reasonably well in subcontinent.
In my view Cullinan was better against pace and Thorpe was good against spinners.
Who would you have in your test team? Discuss.

Having watched both, I will always pick cullinan. I felt Thorpe was a bit vulnerable earlier in the innings.

Tough one and both are up there in the same category pretty much. I will personally go with Thorpe. He was your Bhaijaan’s favourite English batsman back in the day as a kid.

Will never forget him winning the test series for England in Pakistan. Got so dark but he held in there.

Probably culinan Thorpe was a very good all conditions and all attacks test player but not one who would score big or take the game away from the opposition He’d usually score a very good 50 and get out

He was more steady than culinan who had more flair and attacking talent

Thorpe scored 1250 odd runs@ 45 in 16 tests vs Australia with 3 hundreds. Went to lion's den and averaged 48 in 6 matches with 530 runs.

Cullinan averaged 12.75 in 7 tests vs Australia and an abysmal 4.42 in 7 inns in Aus.

This comparison is not even a contest.

Two eye catching players in full flow. But Cullinan went missing more often

Thorpe for me. He would invariably perform under pressure, whereas, Cullinan had his well-documented problems with Warne.

Thorpe was a better all round batsmen scored well against pace and spin and also more often against top quality bowlers.

Cullinan couldn’t play spin so well. Thorpe played everything well. At #5 he averaged 50. When Stewart was closing on his second century of the match in WI and got stuck, it was Thorpe who hit Ambrose and Walsh about, got the innings moving again and took the pressure off Stewie. Thorpe was essential to England’s series win in SL by nullifying Murali.

Graham Thorpe. One of rare instances I pick an Englishmen over Saffer because most comparisons have gone towards Saffers way.

Thorpe. One of the shining lights of the horrible English team of the 90's. Cullinan's struggles against Shane Warne is well documented, Graham Thorpe played spin very well. Thorpe wins it hands down.

Graham Thorpe's career was hit hard by personal problems given the numerous times he had to abandon tours due to problems at home. There was no better player to watch in full flow.

Agree. I used to love his Pull shots to the fast men. The guy was an amazing batter. I used to watch the Ashes just to watch him bat. He always stood up to the Aussies.

Cullinan struggled vs Warne but I think he was good aginst other spinners. IIRC, he had a century in SL vs Murali.

Easy, Thorpe.

However as an Indian, I genuinely feared Cullinan in his playing days.

I don’t remember this.... Examples?
