England middle-order batsman Dawid Malan on Saturday pipped the likes of Babar Azam and Virat Kohli to become the quickest batsman to score 1000 T20I runs. Malan, who had 935 runs in 23 T20Is before the start of the ongoing fixture, has breached the four-figure mark in just 24 innings.

Azam, who is now the second-quickest batsman to score 1000 T20I runs, had taken 26 innings. While Kohli, who is the only batsman with 3000 runs in the shortest format, needed 27 innings.

Among English batsmen, Malan has broken the joint record of Kevin Pietersen and Alex Hales. The duo batted 32 times to complete 1000 runs at the highest level. Malan completed his 1000th run with a single off Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 13th over in the 5th T20I against India.

The left-handed batsman was dismissed on a well-made 68 off 46. The number 1 ranked T20 batsman had only scored 80 runs prior to the fifth T20I and today's knock gave him much-needed confidence going into IPL 2021. Malan was bought by Punjab Kings at his base price of Rs 1.5 crore for the upcoming season.

Meanwhile, Malan's wicket has further strengthened India's chances as the visitors are five down after 15.3 overs. They need 83 off 27 balls.

Batting first, India rode on half-centuries from Rohit Sharma (64) and Kohli (80*) to put up a total of 224/2 on the board. The team batting second has won 3 out of 4 T20Is at this venue so far.

The winning side of today's contest will seal the five-match T20I series. Should India successfully defend the total, they will complete a hat-trick of T20I series win against the Eoin Morgan-led side.

Was in poor form for 1st 4 games of series, but played a class inns here today with some sublime shots. Can see why hes number 1 ranked T20 player.

Impressive numbers.

1000 runs in just 24 innings in any format is superb, but to reach the milestone in T20Is is incredible.

I have to admit I never thought Malan would become an England regular but he has proved many people wrong.

Good player. Teams should focus on that leg stump line.

The guy is a terrible liability in the shorter formats. Terribly out of form and eats balls putting pressure on the rest. Needs to be dropped unfortunately. Livingstone has earned his spot for the World Cup.

Bring in Archer, Stone, Woakes and this team is unbeatable.

England need Alex Hales back. Him and Jason Roy were a treat to watch.

Just goes to show that these milestones mean nothing. Babar does not compare to Kohli as a T20I batsman and Malan is an extremely average batsman overall but especially compared to his teammates. Playing Malan in the T20 World Cup would be extremely idiotic.

Alex Hales is not coming back as long as Eoin Morgan calls the shots and England have plenty of destructive top order batsmen. He will not tolerate indiscipline.

Buttler and Roy are brilliant, no changes needed. Drop Malan and get Stokes in. I think Sam Curran is a better bet than Bairstow, underrated batsman, bowls and superb fielder. Also the bowling can be strengthened with Archer/Stone/Woakes. Can't see another T20 team coming close.

Sam Curran better than Bairstow? Are you joking? Bairstow had a bad series and is being wasted by England down the order. He’s an insane limited overs batsman. He should’ve been batting at 3 in place of the vastly inferior Malan.

Shows the difference in class, whilst we accept fixers back, over weight talentless players

How many batsmen does England need, Curran's cutters/slower ones can be very beneficial on slow tracks.

Babar is poor man's Kohli
and
Malan is poor man's Babar

That shows how useless these rankings are
