Sainthood For Mother Teresa, Vatican Recognises Second Miracle

Kolkata: Mother Teresa will be made a saint of the Roman Catholic Church after Pope Francis recognised a second miracle attributed to the nun, the Missionaries of Charity said today.

"We have now received an official confirmation from Vatican that the Mother would be given sainthood. We are very excited and happy about it," Sunita Kumar, Spokesperson of the Kolkata-based Missionaries of Charity told news agency PTI.

Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to helping the poorest of the poor, is expected to be canonised on September 4 as part of the Pope's Jubilee year of mercy, according to the Catholic newspaper Avvenire in Rome.

The Noel laureate, who died in 1997 at the age of 87, was beatified in 2003 by the late Pope John Paul. Beatification, which requires one miracle, is the last step before sainthood.

A panel of experts, convened three days ago by the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, attributed the second miraculous healing to Mother Teresa, which involved the inexplicable healing of a man who was suffering from a deadly brain disease, the Avvenire reported on Thursday.

"The first one was in Kolkata many years ago. Now, there is a case in Brazil where one person has been healed miraculously as a result of her earlier prayers," Ms Kumar from the Missionaries of Charity said, adding that such miracles were known to happen even after the death of a saint.

Nicknamed the "Saint of the Gutters", Mother Teresa dedicated her life to the poor, the sick and the dying in the streets of Kolkata, founding the Missionaries of Charity order of nuns.

Born to Albanian parents in what is now Skopje in Macedonia, the nun was granted Indian citizenship in 1951.

What a joke. This woman doesnt deserve the respect she gets, let alone being anointed as a saint on fake miracles.

Well i consider her a saint not for these miracles but for what she did for the poor and needy.

I also consider her a saint for what she did for the rich christians in the west. taking millions from them and furthering her agenda in a poor country.

Surprising to see so much hate for Mother Teresa from Indians, Pakistanis generally have very high opinion of her.

Oh, even most Indians revere her, which is tragic.. She deserves none of that respect. Once you truly know about her, you wont have any respect for her.

so she helped the poor and maybe influenced them to convert .. isn't that good ? Or you'd rather they died on the streets as poor Hindus or Muslims or atheists

If only she helped the poor. Dont care if she influenced them to convert. Please read more about her.

Key allegations against Mother Teresa in the Canadian report (by academics)
  • She or Missionaries of Charity got several millions of dollars in aid but put very little of it to use. Instead, they played up the suffering of the poor and stashed cash in secret accounts.
  • When patients were dying, ambulances were not called for but they were prepared for death as per Christian rites. However, when Mother herself was ill, she received treatment in an ultra-modern US hospital.
  • Someone who worked at the Missionaries of Charity facility in Calcutta saw patients being treated without painkillers and with syringes reused and rinsed in cold water. WHO too expressed worry in 2002 that tuberculosis could spread as the infected were not segregated.
  • She accepted money from dictators like Duvalier of Haiti, laid a wreath at Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha’s grave and defended Charles Keating, a convicted fraudster, in court as “a friend of the poor” and “generous donator”
  • After the Bhopal gas tragedy, Mother Teresa was there distributing medals of the Holy Virgin and had nothing better to say than “it was an accident that we must pardon”. Similarly, 360 children and 60 adults died in a fire in north India but all Missionaries of Charity did was pray.
  • She claimed abortion was an “enemy of peace” in her Nobel acceptance speech.
  • She was mentally unstable because of her father’s death and her ‘nuit de la foi’ (night of faith, literally) and request for exorcism may have been the cause of it.

Teresa may not be a saint. But she did the work that most Hindu and Muslim organizations never did.

Miracles are obviously fake and made up to seek more converts.

Why feed the troll, as per the A-hole, Kalam was crap, IITs are crap and now Mother Teresa is crap, you should get the gist .. He is just a sore loser in life with nothing else but bitching against people who actually did something worthwhile in their lives

Typical. Indians get b-hurt when the mediocrity of their icons is pointed out. A Nation perpetually starved for real heroes, that it elevates mediocre people as national icons and hypes them to no end. Understandable.

To those who want to know more about this woman, read The Missionary Position, by Chritopher Hitchens.

One miracle gets you sainthood. A Miracle that could be possibly explained if due scientific investigation is done.

Good to see Indians also becoming saints.

I hope these saints can cure the world problems too. But we all know it will never happen.
