THARPARKAR: The toll of children dying of malnutrition in Sindh’s Tharparker region continues to climb as three more passed away in the past 24 hours.

According to the Sindh health department, the deaths took place at Civil Hospital in Mithhi. The deceased were all newborns.

The latest deaths have taken the death toll in Tharparker to 28 during this month.

According to the health department, every year 1,500 children die due to malnutrition, infections and lack of proper medical facilities in the remote region.

A report released by the United Nation’s Children Fund in April stated that Pakistan is among countries with the highest infant mortality rates, with 22 infants dying before turning one month old.

Among these countries, eight are in Africa and two in Asia, including Afghanistan which is ranked third.

“Pakistan is the riskiest place to be born as measured by its newborn mortality rate,” the report stated. “A baby born in Pakistan is almost 50 times more likely to die during his or her first month than a baby born in Japan, Iceland and Singapore.”

Jiye Bhutto.

I'd like to hear Billy Boy's immaculate and pristine Angraizi on the HDI in interior Sindh, which indeed competes with the worst places in Africa, while the PPP has been fueling its politics for decades with dead bodies instead of on-ground performances and the socio-economic uplift of what happen to be the voters who "select" them.

Jiye Bhutto.

Do you think that after 10 years as Chairman of the PPP, and 10 years of a PPP govt in Sindh, Billo should use his Private School English to explain this?

PPP social media will have you believe that they have turned Tharparkar into some paradise. They claim to have built water filtration plants all over the district, invested in education, helped them with their businesses.

Can't believe some people still fall for it, you only need to see Tharparkar's HDI to know the reality.

Ever since the Time Pass section has been divided into Times Pass and Pakistan Politics, I don't come on this side much but thanks for the notification.

It is extremely sad and disappointing to say the least. A lot of work needs to be done and I would hope Bilawal is giving full attention to such matters. If not than he does not deserve any support or sympathy and should be treated no better than his father.

Not sure if malnutrition is related to water shortage in Sindh but saw this on Bakhtawar's twitter feed recently.

Death toll rises to 25 as one more infant dies in drought-hit Tharparkar

THARPARKAR: One more newborn girl died at Mithi Civil Hospital here on Tuesday increasing the death toll to 25 in the month of March, ARY News reported.

Authorities have apparently failed to control the rate of casualties despite making tall claims of special measures to end rising number of deaths due to malnutrition and epidemic diseases in the drought-hit region.

At least 25 deaths are recorded in Tharparkar while the number of casualties in 2019 soars to 170 this year, says the hospital administration.

On February 24, three children had died at Mithi Civil Hospital in Tharparkar within 48 hours increasing death toll of children in the drought-hit region to 53 within one month.

Undernourishment and other health problems in the desert district continued to take toll of human lives in the area.

On March 8, PM Imran Khan had announced the provision of health insurance cards to 1.2million people from Tharparkar and a long-term plan aimed at establishing mobile hospitals and provision of ambulances is already in the pipeline.

The PM also announced establishing of 100 RO plants in the district, adding that more plants will be established in the future if the need arises.

The PM maintained that developing the neglected and underdeveloped areas of the country remains his government’s top priority.

Every year hundreds of children die due to malnutrition, various infections and lack of proper medical facilities and medicines in the region, health department sources said.

“Pakistan is the riskiest place to be born as measured by its newborn mortality rate,” a report stated. “A baby born in Pakistan is almost 50 times more likely to die during his or her first month than a baby born in Japan, Iceland and Singapore.”
