Srinagar: Two senior army officers - a colonel and a major- were among five security personnel killed in action during an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, which began on Saturday and continued late night. A police officer and two soldiers were also a part of the five-member team that came under heavy fire.

A joint anti-terrorist operation by the armed forces and J&K Police was carried out in the Handwara area of the district in north Kashmir, about 70 km from capital Srinagar, an official statement said, adding that the five-member team was able to rescue several civilians. Two terrorists were killed during the joint operation.

"Sad to inform that five brave personnel including Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, Major Anuj Sood and sub-inspector of JKP Shakeel Qazi were martyred in the line of duty," Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh told news agency PTI.

"Based on the intelligence input that terrorists were taking the civilian inmates of a house in Changimulla, (in the) Handwara (area) of Kupwara district, hostage, a joint operation was launch by Army and JK Police. A team comprising of five Army and JK Police personnel entered the target area occupied by the terrorists to evacuate the civ (civilians)," the official statement read.

"The team of Army and JK Police entered the tgt (target) area and successfully extricated the civ. However, during the process, the team was subjected to heavy volume of fire by the terrorists," it added.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Twitter paid rich tributes to the army officers and security personnel killed in the encounter. "The loss of our soldiers and security personnel in Handwara(J&K) is deeply disturbing and painful. They showed exemplary courage in their fight against the terrorists and made supreme sacrifice while serving the country. We will never forget their bravery and sacrifice (sic)," he wrote.

This recent killing of the Indian colonel and a major among other security forces is big news in India and deserves a thread of its own. The Colonel killed had won two military medals. This incident has potential to increase the hostilities between Pakistan and India. Heavy firing on LOC by both sides is expected.

Indian security forces have been taking advantage of the Covid-19 situation and successfully conducted many anti-militant operations in past few weeks. Last night's operation ended up being very costly for the Indian forces.

Many in India (outside Kashmir) are in a state of shock.

The claim that the militants were holding civilians as hostage is most likely fake propaganda to reduce the pain. Those familiar with how such anti-militant operations are conducted by Indian forces question its validity.

Indians really need to question how supposedly militants from Pakistan are repeatedly able to cross LOC despite the heavy surveillance and despite the last year's surgical strike destroying "terrorist launchpads" and killing 300 of them.

Five security forces and two rebels were killed in Indian-administered Kashmir when the army and police stormed a house where rebels were holding hostages, officials said on Sunday.

A five-member counterinsurgency team entered the home in the northwestern Handwara area late Saturday and "successfully extricated the civilians", an Indian army statement said.

The government forces came under heavy gunfire from the house, and in the ensuing firefight two rebels and all counterinsurgency team members died, it said.

It did not specify how many civilians were rescued. No rebel group immediately commented and there was no independent confirmation of the hostage-taking.

A police officer said an army colonel and a major, along with a police officer and two other soldiers tried to storm the hideout when they were gunned down by the rebels. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with department policy.

The officer said special forces reinforcements were called in and they shot dead two rebels but two others likely escaped.

UN rights chief calls for inquiry over abuses in Kashmir
Meanwhile, at least eight civilians, including three young children and a teenage boy, were wounded on Sunday in a blast caused by an explosive device just a few kilometres from Saturday's gun battle. Police were investigating the cause of the explosion.

Daily fighting

India has stepped up its counterinsurgency operations across Kashmir in recent months despite a lockdown to combat the coronavirus pandemic. Rebels fighting Indian rule have not ceased their attacks on security forces and alleged informants.

There has also been almost daily fighting over the last several months along the rugged and mountainous highly militarised frontier that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

On Friday, two Indian soldiers were killed in border skirmishes. On Wednesday, a Pakistani soldier and three civilians on both sides of Kashmir were killed in another bout of fighting.

India and Pakistan claim divided Kashmir in its entirety. Most Kashmiris support the rebel cause that the territory be united either under Pakistani rule or as an independent country, while also participating in civilian street protests against Indian rule.

Rebels have been fighting Indian control since 1989. India accuses Pakistan of arming and training the fighters, a charge Pakistan denies.

Nearly 70,000 people have been killed in the uprising and the ensuing Indian military crackdown.

One of the five who sacrificed his life for the interest of the Indian state was a Muslim guy.

Certainly, he was a professional and did his duty like the rest. The only reason I am pointing out his religious identity is that the Indian media never misses the opportunity to highlight it and condemn the whole community if the news were negative.

Dont understand how anyone can claim to be a Muslim and be part of the Indian occupatation of Kashmir.

India has used the coronavirus pandemic as a disguise to attack Muslims esp Kashmiris, people will naturually resist such brutal occupiers.

It is a potential seriouis situation as India's economy will be hurt very badly due to the pandemic and due to the idiotic economic policies of the BJP. Broke, hungry people often turn to conflict but India will again be embarrased if they do so.

Human life is very precious but so are the lives of freedom fighters we should not forget their struggles cause they don't get the treatment the oppressors get (these soldiers were enablers) so remember them in your prayers and also pray for the people of Kashmir who are oppressed because they are Muslim

Must have needed a distraction from Covid-19 and Pakistan wasn’t really offering an opportunity so they created one.

Any statements from the hostages thanking the army?

Honestly Indian army and media is such filth. Although their unwavering loyalty for one another is admirable.

Stones are usually smaller than bricks :inti

Kashmiris are a defenceless people. No amount of stones, rapes, murders, locking up and brutality will ever stop them wanting the freedom which is their right. If you want to end this you should be wanting to answer with humanity but the Indian state is not capable of this.

RIP to all the freedom fighters in Kashmir.

Pakistan asks UN to seek proofs from India about ‘terror launch pads’

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Saturday asked the United Nations to seek proof from India about the alleged ‘terror launch pads’ near the Line of Control (LoC) and offered full cooperation with the UN military observers for probing the accusations.

“Pakistan formally offers the United Nations to approach India for obtaining information of alleged launch pads and share the same with UNMOGIP, who will be welcomed to move into any area without sharing specifics with the Pakistan government to validate Indian claims,” Foreign Office said in a media statement.

There has been a flurry of allegations from Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Army Chief Gen MM Naravane and other officials about the so-called ‘terrorist launch-pads’ on the Pakistani side of the LoC and infiltration bids.

The allegations accompanied intensification of ceasefire violations at LoC. There have been about 940 violations so far this year, most of which have targeted populated areas with artillery fire, heavy-calibre mortars and automatic weapons.

The FO recalled that it had on several occasions in the past denied “the baseless Indian allegations of infiltration attempts” and “preposterous claims of targeting of fictional launch pads”. However, it noted Indian propaganda was “incessant”.

Pakistan fears that India could use the allegations for launching “false flag operation” and diverting the global attention from human rights abuses in occupied Kashmir.

“As Pakistan has consistently pointed out, regurgitation of these allegations and spurious claims by India is aimed at diverting the world’s attention from India’s state-terrorism and grave human rights violations in Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir. India also seeks to use these allegations as a pretext for launching ‘false flag’ operation and deliberately targeting of innocent civilians along the LoC,” the statement maintained.

The FO said Pakistan has always been transparent about its commitment of not allowing the use of its territory against anyone. In this regard, it mentioned the LoC tours organised by Pakistan government for Islamabad-based diplomats, journalists, observers and human rights organisations.

Indians officials always start blaming Pakistan and specifically speak of "terror launch pads". Time to show up with proof. There should be no reason to decline this offer.

By the way some visuals of LOC and how heavily sealed off it is:

Interesting details.

Militants answered the Colonel's phone by saying "Aslamualeikum". Good manners. I wonder whether they continued talking or the Indian security forces upon hearing the Islamic greeting hung up the phone.

This is a claim made by Indian officials that is highly questionable and most likely not true. There is enough evidence to question this. I will go in details later.

Ok take ur own time

But off course I don't expect u to agree or believe that these terrorists can ever take civilians as hostages where as history suggests otherwise.

Why are you trolling over loss of lives?

Sometimes you cross lines with your trolling.

By calling them martyrs, you are romanticising and glorifying their tragic death, so that poor or gullible youngsters keep on signing up and some of them come back in coffins.

So much for integration of Kashmir with rest of India and ‘the final solution to the Kashmir problem’ as per words of Modi’s lackey Arnab Goswami.

Feel sad for the families but I guess they are experiencing the same as what their fathers did for many many others so can’t be too emotional about it. They signed up for it after all.

Militants are no angles or saints. They can very well take innocent people hostage and kill civilians. I have no problem with recognizing that. However it's not typical for Kashmiri militants operating in the valley, since they enjoy popular support of the population and don't want to jeopardize the support. It's still possible though, in this case however it is questionable.

How Indian military conducts such anti-militant operations

Typically, Indian security forces receive intel that a number of militants are hiding in a certain building. They immediately cordon off the area with a large number of forces and trap the militants in the building. The militants normally have no chance of escaping and it's only a matter of time until they are neutralized.

Initially heavy gun battle follows, while Indian security forces try to plant explosive device on the house or if the surroundings is suitable enough fire from outside at the building to bring it down. Most of the time the militants are killed when the building collapse on them and crushes them. That's how 99% of these encounters play out where the militants are caught trapped in a building.

Now why do I doubt that in this case there was any hostage situation? Multiple reasons.

When the encounter started, there was a local journalist accompanying the security forces and narrating the event. Many mainstream media channels in India have used his footage and image. This local journalist was clearly allowed by the Indian security forces to report from the encounter site otherwise they wouldn't have allow him to take photos with them while the encounter is ongoing.

It's was a worst day☹️

Encounter is still going on pic.twitter.com/crf2qzHOWv
— Junaid Bhat Photographer (@Junaidbhatphoto) May 2, 2020

He was even allowed to report that one security personnel had his hand wounded during the early stage of the encounter. Which further highlights his good rapport with the security forces at the encounter site.

Army soldier was injured after a fresh firing resumed at Chujhumma area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Saturday.

Photo @Junaidbhatphoto

(Picture Time 04.24 pm) pic.twitter.com/85O4fBBRwt
— Junaid Bhat Photographer (@Junaidbhatphoto) May 2, 2020

From the very beginning he was reporting that Indian forces are fighting a number of militants and it seemed to be a usual encounter.

The visual he posted, as the encounter was unfolding, shows that Indian forces were targeting the building with heavy fire in an attempt to bring it down and kill the people in it.

These clips are from hours before any Indian forces went into the house. It is clearly being bombarded heavily. Such a bombardment can't indicate that there are some civilians inside that need to be rescued. There is a clear intent to kill the people inside, destroy the building while protecting any potential hostages trapped inside the building seems to be out of question.

If the militants had taken any local hostages then the Indian security forces missed a huge opportunity to highlight it by the local journalists as that would have shown the ugly face of the militants.

If there were any hostages, which were then successfully and heroically rescued by Indian forces, clearly Indian forces would want the local Kashmiri journalists with them to report, since that would have given them good PR with the local population. If it wasn't to win trust and the hearts and minds of the locals then why would they even allow a local journalist to be at the site in the first place?

While the encounter was unfolding, which started on May 2 before sunset local time, many Indian twitter handles including some ex-army men with "sources" were also narrating about it.

None ever mentioned any civilian hostages. When the contact with the colonel and other 4 security personnel was lost all reported about it. They even knew the ranks of the missing personnel.

Intense gunfight: Total four ( three Army & one JKP) are trapped in the house. These were the tweets coming out as the encounter is unfolding and they got the rank of all the missing personnel right, so the people reporting this must have an insider giving them these details. It just doesn't make sense for them to mention the loss of communication with these personnel but not their initial heroic act of rescuing civilians.

Even now Indian media is interviewing the family members of the deceased but why not interview the hostages and let them pay tribute to the men who sacrificed their own live to rescue them? While many locals in Kashmir are celebrating the militants why not question that support by letting hostages rescued by evil Indian forces speak for themselves?

But off course I don't expect u to agree or believe that these terrorists can ever take civilians as hostages where as history suggests otherwise.

For me to believe the hostage story someone would have to explain why no reporter on ground or those reporting during the encounter mentioned any civilian hostages, while they were mentioning all the other fine details like the rank of the personnel missing or a soldier injuring his hand.

How is firing heavily at the complex, where the militants were believed to be hiding, was supposed to protect the hostages.

Did they try to negotiate the hostage situation with the militants or did they decide to strom the complex and rescue them by force. If there was a period of intense negotiations with the militants, why did no local reported mentioned it.

How come the 5 security personnel were professional enough to rescue the hostages from the militants without any hostages getting killed, but they themselves who were better armored got killed in the process and none made it out alive.

Here is what most likely happened and could explain why so many high level Indian army personnel were killed by 2 militants.

Indian forces are just too used to the success of these encounters and a smooth operation. In the recent weeks there have been many such successful encounters conducted by them without any causality on the Indian side. Once they know where the militants are hiding in a building it is almost routine for them to eliminate them.

However due to the tactic they use, there is small but random chance that the militant might survive the building collapsing on him.

It's possible that during this encounter a part of building complex collapsed and the militants stopped firing for hours. Leading the Indian forces to believe that the militants are most likely dead or heavily injured, hence a group of them entered the complex to look for dead bodies and were killed by the militants in a surprise attack.

This is nothing new and has happened multiple times before from time to time.

A few examples:

Army Officer, Militant Killed In Anantnag Gunfight
Initially, sources said, the joint team of forces and militants exchanged gunfire for some time during which house in which the militants were hiding was damaged. Later there was a lull for about an hour even as army rushed more reinforcements and the joint team started searches to find out the militants.

Soon the militants rose from the debris and opened indiscriminate fire on the forces, resulting in the on spot death of an army officer of major rank

5 personnel killed as militant presumed dead fires

Sources said as a joint search team of army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and state police went to retrieve the bodies of two slain militants, one of them, earlier believed to be dead, stood up and fired indiscriminately leading to grievous bullet injuries to nine security personnel.

Kashmir: Indian Army major, soldier killed in fresh gunfight
The incident took place when a militant rose out of the debris of the house, razed to rubble by a joint team of police and army earlier which led to the killing of three militants.

Official sources told GNS that the fresh incident took place when the joint team was carrying out the searches post the gunfight.

All of a sudden, a militant came out of the debris of the house and started indiscriminate firing, injuring three soldiers including a major. Two of them are critical,” an army officer told GNS.

For me this makes a lot more sense than to think that somehow 2 militants were able to outgun 5 high ranking professional Indian army men in a close battle fight within a building complex. The only possibility is that the militant caught them by surprise.

New casualties of Indian forces are being reported today.

3 Killed In Attack On Paramilitary Patrol In Jammu And Kashmirs Handwara

The encounter comes after a day after the death of five security personnel, including two army officers, in Handwara in a face-off with terrorists.

Srinagar: At least three jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed and seven injured after a patrolling party of the paramilitary force was attacked by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Handwara on Monday, triggering a fierce gun-battle.

The encounter comes after a day after the death of five security personnel, including two army officers, in the same arrea in a face-off with terrorists that began on Saturday.

Sources said the terrorists targetted a CRPF patrol and launched heavy fire on them.

The CRPF unit repulsed the attack and reinforcements from other security agencies have reached the area, officials said.

"Encounter is underway. We have suffered some casualties," said a CRPF officer.

Many Indian citizens will be rightfully mourning the recent losses of their jawans in Kashmir. Once again the Kashmir region will suddenly get huge media attention and the ordinary Indian citizens will be confronted with the ongoing conflict.

Now, before the Indian media starts to blindly accuse Pakistan of deliberately provoking and "launching terrorists" in such a crisis situation and some overly zealous Pakistani "patriots" aggressively deny all accusations, while internally feeling a sense of pride and crediting their beloved ISI, I'd like to remind everyone that the anti-militant operations have been going on since past few weeks by the Indian forces and they have conducted many successful operation based on intelligence.

I will list a few recent ones here:

South Kashmir | 18 local militants, 2 'associates' killed in 2 weeks

On April 17, two militants were killed in an encounter at Dairoo-Keegam Shopian. The bodies of the duo, who were locals from the same district, were taken to a far off Baramula village by police for burial.

On April 22, four militants were killed in an encounter at Melhoora village in Zainapora area of Shopian. All the four were locals, hailing from Shopian and Pulwama villages, and their bodies were too taken by police to Ganderbal for burial.

On April 24, two militants were killed in a brief exchange of fire in Heri-Kharipora village of Frisal in Yaripora, Kulgam. The security forces ambushed their vehicle ferrying a cop they had abducted from his house minutes before. The bodies of the duo hailing from Ashmuji and Bugam villages of Kulgam were also taken by police to a far off Baramulla village for burial.

On April 25, two militants and a civilian were killed in an encounter in Goripora, Barsoo village of Awantipora police district. The police, however, said the civilian, identified as Mansoor Ahmad – a carpenter by profession – was an “associate of militants” who was arrested earlier and was killed during exchange of fire while leading the security forces to the militants’ hideout.

On evening of April 26, police claimed to have killed four militants in a brief exchange of fire in Achthal-Guddar village of Kulgam district. An army officer, they said, also sustained injuries.
However, the next day police retracted the earlier statement saying only one “militant associate” was killed.

“The militants were probably hit by bullets but managed to escape in the cover of darkness. Only one body that of an associate was recovered,” the police statement said.

The slain youth was an engineering graduate and a son of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police. His family have denied his involvement in militancy.

On April 27, three militants were killed in Lower-Munda Qazigund area of Anantnag district in the police jurisdiction of Kulgam. All of them were locals from Kulgam villages. Their bodies were taken by police to Baramulla for burial.

As many as 14 civilians were injured when an unexploded device suddenly went off from the rubble of the damaged houses.

On April 29, three militants were again killed in Melhora- Zainapora area of Shopian. Police said Ansar Ghazwatul Hind (AGH) chief Burhan Koka of same village was among the slain. His other two associates were identified as Nasir Ahmed Bhat of Arwani Bijbehara and Bilal Ahmed Khan of Sangoo Narbal Pulwama

On May 2, two militants were killed in Pulwama town. Initial reports suggest that the duo hailed from the same district. Their bodies, a police official said, will be taken to a Baramulla village for burial.

https://www.greaterkashmir.com/news...cal-militants-2-associates-killed-in-2-weeks/

Remember the term "encounter" means the Indian forces have received intelligence about a potential militants hide out place, they cordon off the area, surround the building, plant explosive device and crush the whole building to the ground.

April was the deadliest month of the year so far in Jammu and Kashmir. The valley witnessed 51 killings against the monthly average of 21 for the year (143% increase month-over-month (MoM). Among the 51 killings, the highest, 28 were militants (180% increase MoM), 13 Indian security forces (86% increase MoM), 8 civilians (200% increase MoM) and 2 alleged over-ground-workers of militants.

Among the 25 Kashmiri militants, 22 (84%) were from south Kashmir districts of Shopian (9), Pulwama (6), Kulgam (5), Anantnag (2), 2 from Kishtwar in Jammu division and 1 from Baramulla, north Kashmir.

https://kashmirosint.wordpress.com/...erinsurgency-ops-up-by-36-killings-up-by-143/

Before the India media starts it war propaganda, remember that Indian forces had been actively engaging the militants in the past few weeks despite the COVID-19 situation and as per the Indian forces engaged in counterinsurgency a large number of militants killed were locals and not infiltrators from Pakistan.

However the media and some politicians will paint the picture as if there was blissful tranquility in the region, when suddenly terrorists from PoK crossed LOC and killed innocent Army jawans who were in the valley for tourist purposes. In an ongoing conflict if you kill some, you also get killed from time to time. It's to be expected.

Meanwhile those who are happy with the recent success of the militants should also recognize their heavy losses in the past few weeks and the big price the militants and their relatives have to pay for their continuous armed struggle. Any attempt to use their sacrifice and struggle for Pakistani military point securing and ego boost for esteemed ISI should be discouraged. This isn't ti t-for-tat, it's not some twisted revenge for the killings of Pak army personnel through the hands of TTP or BLA. It's an indigenous struggle of the natives of Kashmir for which they are bringing sacrifices daily.

who needs pak to convince them to seek independence when these people are treated worse than animals

The hope of any peaceful arrangement between India and Kashmir has been diminished due to India’s behaviour recently.

My fear is that the world will continue to turn a blind eye to the atrocities while India changes the demographic landscape of Kashmir.

It is now confirmed that the average Indian is devoid of any conscience whatsoever. So all we can do is hope the world catches on and sees what is being done to innocent people in their homes.

Prayers for the deceased security personnel and their families, saw photos of them with their young families and it was so heartbreaking. A really sad state of affairs, a lot of suffering on both sides, we must not forget the Kashmiri civilians as well. Yesterday a civilian too passed away after being caught in the cross firing.

I guess militancy will hit a new peak (like 90s) under this crazy Hindutva government, they have bungled up in many places/sectors and Kashmir is certainly one of their failures. When you communalize everything, dehumanize the 'others', punish 'others' for their basic dietary choices, subvert democracy and due process, have nefarious intentions whilst pretending that you are doing it for good, there will be a heavy price to be paid. Many Kashmiri youth too have lost their connect with India, Congress did try to meet the asprations of Kashmiri youngsters and many entered mainstream. Shah Faesal was the poster boy of Kashmiri youth 10 years back, now it is Burhan Wani, we must introspect what went wrong.

Unfortunately those politicians won't lose anything, young boys from the security forces and Kashmiri civilians will continue to pay with their lives, have their dreams shattered, be ripped off their dignity etc.

Handwara Encounter –Open Source Intelligence version

Late in the evening on May 2, there were sensitive and restricted reports that Indian Security forces may have suffered a major, unexpected damage in Handwara gunfight, a Colonel, a Major, 2 soldiers and a sub-inspector from J&K Police’s counterinsurgency wing (SOG) who had gone into the target-house, remained out of contact for many hours. Radio calls and calls on personal mobile phones remain unanswered. This was my reaction:

img_1904.jpg

I treated the information as sensitive and maybe classified, did not share it or make it public. I struggled to understand why would a commanding officer of ~1500 soldiers venture into the target-house with just 3-4 soldiers with him and an officer from SOG. I had only two explanations at that time:

(1) The Colonel and team ventured into the target-house to check on the presumed ‘dead’ militant(s), the ‘dead’ militant(s) rose from the debris, found the Colonel and team totally off guard and took them out before they could even react, like the Pulwama gunfight last year where Indian army lost five soldiers, including a Major after a militant presumed dead came out of nowhere and sprayed-down his Kalashnikov at them. A Lt. Colonel, a Brigadier, a Captian and a DIG police were injured in the unexpected attack too. Or the Handwara gunfight in 2019 where, in a similar incident, a paramilitary officer and SOG personnel were killed.

(2) The Colonel and team ventured into the target-house to check on the presumed ‘dead’ militant(s), the militant(s) who were alive, attacked them, the Colonel and team somehow positioned themselves in or outside the house, are alive, have strategically switched their radios and mobile devices to silent mode.

At 2145 hours (approx.), the news hit Twitter; an Indian journalist working for a Hindi news channel ‘broke’ the news, and in no time an army of mainstream Indian journalists with blue ticks shared and recycled the news, and with it the details of missing officers, some claimed the soldiers were taken hostages by militants. I found it ridiculous. I knew the Colonel and Co. were either dead already, or alive, positioned strategically, in control, waiting for militants to make their move, to take them out. A militant who knows his certain death is moments away, or any militant for that matter, would never take hostages, do any talking or waste any time on negotiations in middle of a fierce gunfight. He won’t miss a chance to kill his enemy at the first sight, at the first opportunity that arises. Some Indian journalists claimed “all five soldiers were rescued and safe”. I wasn’t sure how to react to that. How exactly do you ‘rescue’ a SOG officer and a Colonel with three buddies, who have won multiple gallantry awards for their valor and achievements working in counterinsurgency ops in the valley for decades, from two militants? If they were unarmed and off duty , maybe.

I spent some time researching on the encounter. I went through different accounts, versions, some old stories, intel reports etc and came up with my version of what happened in Handwara on May 2.

The OSINT version

88c5d8da-1f4a-4a41-98f8-6002471644de-1.jpg

Indian soldiers taking positions behind a concrete barrier near the gunfight site in Handwara on May 2)

Friday, May 1 (1400 hours): India Security forces received intel that a large group of Lashkar-e-Taiba militants led by local commander Gani Khawaja is moving in the Rajwar and Marwar forest area. Gani Khawaja is big fish in the Handwara-Sopore belt, allegedly responsible for multiple attacks on Indian security forces and executions of civilians in Sopore area. Indian army’s 21-RR, 15-RR, 30-RR, SOG, 92-CRPF and Para-9 launched a search ops in the forest. A brief contact with militants was established, exchange of fire between militants and Indian security forces took place in Waddar-Bala pocket of the forest. Militants escape from the area in multiple groups, in multiple directions. Indian security forces believed that some of the militants went further deep into the forest, and some fled down into the residential area, close to the forest. The first fire was opened by militants, forcing Indian security forces to take cover and helping militants vanish from the sight. Indian security forces believe if the militants had not launched a proactive, sudden attack on them at a disadvantageous location, the militants might as well would have been neutralised in the forest itself. The proactive attack gave militants an upper hand. Indian security forces continued the siege and search ops throughout the night. The ops was called off at 1000 hours on Saturday May 2, without any success or maybe strategically. All the human-intel in the area was activated.

Saturday, May 2 (1500 hours (approx.): Indian army receive intel, a group of militants that escaped from Rajwar forests a day before have taken refuge in a two storey house in Changimulla, in the foot of the forest, 1.4 miles (approx.) from the location where first standoff with militants took place on previous day. Indian security forces launch a cordon and search ops in the village. 21-RR, 15-RR, 30-RR, 22-RR, 92-CRPF, Para-9 and J&K Police’s SOG take part in the ops. The joint-ops is led by Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, Major Anuj and sub-inspector SOG, Qazi Sagheer, two of them decorated counterinsurgency specialists with decades of experience working in counterinsurgency ops in Kashmir.

Saturday, May 2 (1530 hours (approx.): The target-house is located and contact with militants is established. A fierce gun battle rages, exchange of fire takes from both sides. Indian army used assault rifles, UBGLs, recoilless launchers against the holed up militants. The firefight ‘ends’ and there is a long enduring lull, long enough to give Indian security forces assurance and confidence that all militants were neutralised and encounter was over. Indian security forces chose not to blow up the house in usual way or burn it down to ashes like it is usually done in encounters in Kashmir. They may have tried to save the poor carpenter’s house presuming militants were dead already and no further action was required. When militants don’t resist for long, are neutralised in initial stages of the gunfight, the house is spared.

1830 hours (approx.): Indian security forces lead by Colonel Sharma, Major Anuj and sub-inspector Qazi approached the target-house to check on the presumed ‘dead’ militants, a miscalculation, an error in judgement that would cost them dearly. As soon as they came closer to the target-house, a lone militant, out of nowhere, emerged from an abutting single storey structure and fired indiscriminately at them. The spray-down from his Kalashnikov hit four men, Major Anuj, two soldiers and sub-inspector Qazi, two of them above neck, two in the wings and abdomen. Colonel Sharma ran towards an adjacent cowshed, others fled back to their original positions away from the gunfight site. It was already dark by now. The lone militant followed Colonel Sharma, caught hold of him and shot him dead inside/ or at the entrance of the cowshed. It is not clear if Colonel Sharma was armed with an assault rifle or had accidentally dropped it at the sudden and intense attack, or wasn’t carrying one in the first place. Some of the wounds on Indian soldiers appear to be inflicted by a blunt object, not bullets. It is not clear if the militant also used some sort of cutting tool in the assault or only the assault rifle. Indian security forces’ unit outside the gunfight site, made several attempts to reach Colonel Sharma and team on the radio. There was no answer. In a desperate attempt, a phone call was finally made to Colonel Sharma’s personal mobile phone later in the night. It was answered by a militant. The nature of conversation remains unknown. It was at this moment, the unit outside the gunfight site knew that Colonel Sharma and his team were KIA and final assault to neutralise the militant started. The pictures of slain Colonel Sharma and team that I saw, suggest Colonel Sharma was killed separately. His body cannot be seen near the other four bodies lying on the ground, that of Major Anuj, two soldiers and sub-inspector Qazi. Indian security forces were not sure how many militants were holed up in the target-house or the adjacent structure(s).

The lone militant then picked up arms and ammunition from the slain soldiers and went inside the target-house. He fought all night. One of the reasons he lasted longer was that he did not exhaust his limited ammo, like militants usually do. He had picked up enough ammo from the slain soldiers. However, the main reason why he lasted so long was that Indian security forces did not blow up the house, did not burn it down because bodies of five of their comrades were lying very close to the house. They were not sure if the bodies were outside the house or inside the house. Indian security forces outside the gunfight site suspected that militants may have dragged the bodies inside the house. They had to save the bodies. They used small arms to take out the militant, assault rifles and UBGLs, a hell lot of them. That is why the house is still standing on its four walls. The militant fought fiercely for 8-10 hours, a bullet from his Kalashnikov pierced through the tyre of a DySP’s armoured SUV, quite far from the gunfight site, a narrow escape for the soldier near the SUV.

One of the OSINT accounts said that Colonel Sharma and team did not approach the target-house with an intent to venture into it to check on the presumed ‘dead’ militants. They were moving around the gunfight site when they suddenly came in face to face with the militant. They were not expecting the militant to be in that location. The militant took them by surprise and sprayed down his Kalashinkov at them, some of them tried to run into the target house, but didn’t make it, Colonel Sharma ran into cowshed and others retreated to their original positions away from the gunfight site.

The Militants

The lone militant who killed Colonel Sharma, Major Anuj, sub-inspector Qazi and two army soldiers was not Lashkar-e-Taiba’s chief in Kashmir. LeT’s chief in Kashmir goes by nom de guerre Abu-Zargam, not “Haider”. He was not a Pakistani either. He was a Kashmiri, Ashiq Hussain from Warpora area of Sopore Baramulla. There is a Pakistani connection though. Keep reading. The other militant was also a local, Asif Reshi from Kralgund, Handwara, which is also Gani Khawaja’s native area. Asif Reshi was killed in the initial stages of the gun-battle, on the first storey of the target-house, hours before Colonel Sharma and team ventured into its compound. Ashiq Hussain survived the initial assault because he had taken refuge in the cow-shed or the next-door single storey house, not in the target-house. He moved back to the target-house after killing Colonel Sharma and team. He was also killed in the first storey of the building at 0500 hours (approx.) on Sunday, nearly after a 24-hour long and deadly gunfight. There was now a permanent lull and the encounter was over, officially.

No militant escaped from the encounter or was killed outside the encounter site while attempting to escape. If any of the militants had escaped from the encounter, TRF wouldn’t have missed the chance to share its version of the gunfight. They would shared an audio or video propaganda, in typical TRF way. Two militants were killed in the encounter, both on first storey of the target-house. A possible Type-56 Chinese AKM pattern assault rifle and a possible PM MD-65 was recovered from the dead militants. The recovery of basic weapons suggests the lone militant could not have managed to fight so long, which further backs the OSINT theory that he picked up the ammo from KIA Indian soldiers before going into the target-house.

img_2141.jpg

Arms and ammunition recovered from the militants.

Sunday, May 3 (0700 hours): Indian security forces summoned the village-head, directed him to go to the gunfight site and check on the soldiers and militants. The scared and reluctant village-head, Mohammed Abdullah Lone with some locals went in, found bodies of all five security forces personnel in the compound of the target-house, 4 bodies were on the ground close to each other, very close to the target-house. Colonel Sharma’s body, at some distance, near the cow-shed. The village head found bodies of two militants on the first storey of the house. He informed the Indian security forces, they moved in and took over.

No Hostage Situation

There was no hostage situation, neither the residents of the target-house were taken hostages by militants, nor the Colonel Sharma and team. There were no residents in the target-house when the gunfight broke. Colonel Sharma and team never went inside the target-house. The house belonged to a carpenter who was at work along with his two sons. His wife dropped their daughter at a relative’s house earlier on that day. They probably took their kids away knowing it is not safe with militants in the house and Indian security forces on their trail. When the lone woman in the house saw Indian army cordoning off the house and taking positions, she fled well on time. When the gunfight broke, only militant(s) were in the house.

There is No Haider

Nobody called “Haider” was killed in the Handwara gunfight. No Pakistani militant was killed either. The two militants killed were: (1) Asif Reshi from Kralgund, Handwara. (2) Ashiq Hussain from Warpora, Sopore. None of them was “Haider” or a Pakistani militant. Asif Reshi had joined Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in September 2019 during the lockdown. He was locally trained, classified as “soyat” in local technical language, meaning locally or untrained militant. Ashiq Hussain had travelled to Pakistan on a valid passport and visa via Wagah-Atari in Punjab, in April 2018, received arms training and infiltrated illegally into Kashmir in September 2019 during the lockdown. He was possibly accompanied by another Kashmiri from Sopore, Kamar-ud-Din along with some Pakistanis. Kamar-ud-Din and Ashiq Hussain had probably travelled to Pakistan together, left home for Nepal, but ended up in Pakistan. Kamar-ud-Din was killed in Ganderbal on September 27 last year, days after infiltrating, possibly from an old and inactive infiltration route; Tulail Valley in Ganderbal. It was believed to be a large militant group, intercepted in Gangbal forests of Ganderbal on September 27, 2019, two were killed in the ops from September 27 to September 30, including a Pakistani, others managed to reach deep into the hinterlands of Kashmir. The ops was called off after more than two weeks. Ashiq Hussain like the militants that infiltrated through Keran in April first week and wiped-out an entire Special Forces team, would have received serious and similar training in Pakistan too. Hence, the major high-profile damage on Indian Security forces in a decade.

The Curious Case of The Resistance Front

The Resistance Front, as expected owned both militants killed in Handwara gunfight and identified them as Asif Reshi and Ashiq Hussain. I guess I don’t have to explain why did The Resistance Front own militants that were officially affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba once, at least one of them for sure. You can also read my previous report on The Resistance Front to understand how the militant group works. I will try to further decode TRF in coming days, if I find enough time.

Indian Army version: The official Indian army version of the gunfight is that Colonel Sharma and team went inside the target-house to recue hostages. They rescued the hostages and were KIA in the process! The official version also claims that Lashkar-e-Taiba’s chief/ commander “Haider”, a Pakistani national was killed in the gunfight. You can read more on the official version in this Greater Kashmir report. I am not going to analyse it or ask questions. I don’t want to stretch this article longer.

LeT/ TRF version: LeT/ TRF haven’t shared any details about the gunfight, except for the identities of two militants killed.

(The photos of KIA soldiers and some details are graphic. As a mark of respect to the families and friends of fallen soldiers, I did not add them here or shared them anywhere, not even the censored versions.)

The soldiers that never returned home, sleep gentle under the Himalayan heaven.

Disclaimer: The OSINT version does vary from the official version of Indian army. The OSINT version always varies from the official version, not just in Kashmir but everywhere. I do not claim that The OSINT version is true and Indian army’s version is false. I did some research and came up with The OSINT version. If the OSINT was broken, the details in my report may be broken too. The OSINT version could be false and Indian army’s version could be true. I leave that for you to judge!
