Derbyshire have signed Pakistan seamer, Mohammad Abbas, on a two-year contract.

Abbas, 35, has claimed more than 840 first-class wickets at an average of little over 20, with 100 of those dismissals coming in Test cricket.

He has represented Leicestershire, Hampshire and Nottinghamshire in the County Championship, taking 50 or more red ball wickets in an English season three times.

A skilful and accurate bowler, Abbas’ best Test figures of 6-54 came in December 2024, when he tormented the South Africa top and middle order at Centurion.

In signing for Derbyshire, Abbas reunites with Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, the coach who gave him his Test debut against West Indies in 2017.

Speaking about the signing, Arthur said: “This is a statement signing for us, we’ve beaten a number of Division One counties to sign one of the finest red ball bowlers around and we’re absolutely delighted to have Mohammad on board for 2026 and 2027.

“He’s an exceptional bowler, he bowls maidens, builds pressure and his wickets come at a really impressive average. However, it’s not just his ability which will be huge for us, his experience is going to be massive for our young players to learn from.”

Abbas added: “It’s exciting for me to join Derbyshire and work with Mickey Arthur again, he’s a fantastic coach and hearing his plans for Derbyshire, we share the same ambitions for the Club: to be in Division One.”

“The team only just missed out on promotion in 2025, so I’m hoping I can come in and perform to win a few more games and give our supporters a trophy to celebrate.”

Mohammad Abbas delivered a lethal opening spell for Derbyshire, dismantling Lancashire's top order with two quick wickets for just five runs. His clinical precision left the batting side reeling at 6/2, as he dismissed both Luke Wells and Josh Bohannon in his first three overs.

Imagine he was playing for Lancashire & opening the bowling with Jimmy, bowl out teams in the first session so the uncles can then recover for the rest of the day

I've been watching the highlight reels of Abbas. Some artistic bowling beautiful line and length and shaping the ball away. Good old school cricket. Should be a candidate for the England series, if the pitches have some life he can plug away from one end.

he has 874 wickets at an avg of 20.28 in Fc I think, phenomenal for a guy who has no pace, he has elite economy, and amazing metaranomic accuracy with spells of econ 2-2.5 mostly, his release point and wobble seam can make him great even for flat tracks

Derbyshire seamer, Muhammad Abbas, has been named in the Pakistan squad for their two-game Test series against Bangladesh next month.

Abbas has claimed six wickets in his first two games for Derbyshire, but will miss the Rothesay County Championship fixtures against Kent, Northamptonshire and Middlesex while on international duty.

The series will give Abbas the chance to add to his 100 Test wickets, with the experienced seamer now also just ten dismissals away from reaching 1,000 across all formats. He is expected to return ahead of the First-class fixture against Durham, starting on Friday 12 June.

The first of the two matches – part of the ICC World Test Championship will be played at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka from 8 to 12 May, while Sylhet International Cricket Stadium will host the second Test which will be played from 16 to 20 May.
