Seems to be heading in the right direction and if Vaughan is to be believed based on his IPL performances, could well be seen in Indian colours soon

Very impressive player. Plays all-round, fielding skills and running between the wickets top notch.

Probably the best find for India this year's IPL.
 
Don’t believe this guy is 20 years old. Plays like a 23-24 year player with his maturity at the crease.

Averages 34.88 from 15 FC games. Keep him in the pyjama league but nothing else.
 
He's ok. His footwork is not impressive. Doesn't have the gear to go bezerk like Rohit. Like many are saying, he could be the next Dhawan, which is not a bad thing at all. I would like to see him work on his Test batting. He looks to be similar to S.Ramesh.

Off the track, something with the current generation of Indian batsmen, they are not looking like they could be he next batting greats... Shaw, Gill, Iyer, KL Rahul, Mayank, Pant, Sanju Samson, Pandya brothers, Manish Pandey, Nitish Rana, Vihari (tests), Gurkeerat, Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, Shivam Dubey, Mandeep Singh, Rahul Tripathi, this Padikkal guy..none of them are impressive and look world-class. I am very disappointed with what I see.

Averages 59 in List A. He looks appropriate for LOs cricket at the top order but I think there is serious competition at top order right now.

While obliviously deficient in some technical areas he has this stats cause he had a rough few years in his late teens. Its the reason he was not in any u19 squads for long for India. But he will hopefully earn
his place and play for best batting side in India (Karnataka) in ranji for some seasons and hone his game.
 
Imagine Padikkal and Gill batting together in a test match in Australia .. a fantastic left-right combo that's very soothing on the eye..yummmy. The future looks good for India.

I think among these, the standouts are KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw.

Then you have the likes of Iyer, Manish, Pant and Sanju in that order. Out of this, Manish Pandey is probably a failed international career by now.

He is 20 years old FGS. Has played just a season and a half of FC cricket. Plus was the top scorer in a Karnataka Ranji team full of superstars and was the highest scoring opener in the entire tournament (among super league teams).

If you followed even bit of FC cricket in India especially of Karnataka, who played mostly on low scoring pitches, you wouldn't be making this comment.

Assuming this is based on IPL. What exactly do Rahul, Mayank, Gill, Iyer have to do to become 'world class'? Each of them have stellar FC records and would do well if given a proper run. Rahul did mess u his test batting in trying to adapt his batting to LOIs but has had a decent revival in his form and should go onto have a good career across formats.

Hyping? An outstanding talent who was the highest scorer in domestic limited overs tournaments in 2019-20, had a good FC season in tough conditions and is now doing well in IPL is getting the deserved attention. Who is asking him to be included in the national team immediately? Everyone is saying he is one for the future. Anything wrong in saying that?

Do not let your hate for IPL blind you to be critical of young players doing well there, that too when you have not even watched him properly.

Shaw, Gill mayank, rahul, rana all have potential to be world class. They are just young. all have serious potential.

I would like to add Surya Kumar Yadav, whom I find the most assured technique and temperament wise and his shot selection is too good!
 
I may have jumped the gun a little here. Yes, KL and Mayank seem to have potential but the rest don't look convincing, and yes, I am basing my opinion on IPL and a few international matches these guys played so far. Maybe if they play more intl games, we could make a fairer assessment.

I agree with you. Of all, Surya Kumar Yadav seem to have a proper footwork, timing and power game. It's surprising that he is not part of the national team. I hope he gets a chance to play for India while he is young and in form.

Bro you should know Indian selectors by now??

You either have to have extremely good connections with the upper management, Kohli or the selection board.
Or you need to have rich parents
Or you need to have IPl connections with the captain of the national team or an older ex captain like Dhoni.

Being good alone won't get you far unfortunately.

Rana is even below SKY in consideration, I don't think he will make it to international cricket. Just too many competition.

Why not Gill in tests and ODIs? His FC record is head and shoulders ahead of rest.

Mayank also is already in test squad, in LOs there is just too much of competition at top order.

Mayank is a better ODI player than Gill. I have seen enough of both in IPL hence this statement
 
Easily the best young player in this IPL, has been one of the key reasons why RCB have done well. For a youngsters to succeed in RCB set up (under Kohli's toxic leadership) speaks volumes about his mental fortitude. Now onto the Ranji season and then India A tours to further improve his game and be ready in the next 18-24 months for international cricket

Not even comparable. One is 21, other is nearly 30. Mayank has been playing IPL for 8 years, this is his first really good season as he carried his confidence from international cricket to IPL. He got into the Indian team based on volume of runs scored in FC cricket and on A tours between 2016-2018.

If I was to play a guessing game, Gill will be a future Inian batting legend and a long term Indian captain

Gill is 21 and Mayank is 29. That in itself is a big difference.

The thing is our main openers right now are Rohit and Dhawan in ODI team and Rohit/Rahul/Dhawan in T20. Mayank is just a backup option.

By the time, Rohit or Dhawan retires, Mayank may not have the form and age to take that slot in LOI team. Someone like Gill or Shaw or maybe Paddikal will be in better position to take that place.

WC is 3 years away and I'm not sure about Dhawan surviving that long. KL Rahul is going to play at 5 as WC batsman so Mayank is a better option than Gill

I tell you! Batsmen who don't average 50+ in FC should get nowhere near the Indian jersey. These Padikkal types are ok for Bellary Premier league and IPL, not anything more.
 
I see him improving his FC record over the next couple of years. He is certainly on track to be included in the white ball sides once Dhawan or Sharma retire.
 
India found Dhawan's replacement. Playing for Kohli in IPL won't hurt his LOI chances either. Should play for India in a year. Don't think Dhawan will play 2023 WC.
 
Highly impressive player. Not sure when he will get a chance as India have a lot of batting options.

it’s your statement which is worthless and a hack. At 20 he is topping the batting charts and four consecutive centuries on trot. Vijay hazare trophy is a 50 over game and not a pyjama league. Let’s just say you don’t have an eye for talent.
 
I think he will be more suited to LOI cricket imo. He will probably go fine in India but I feel he might encounter some troubles overseas.

Yashasvi Jaiswal will make a better test opener in my opinion. The likes of Jaiswal and Washington need to be groomed for the Indian test team in the coming future.

You are anti-IPL but you don't follow domestic cricket either? What's the deal with you?

He was scoring big runs before he debuted in IPL. Though not in FC cricket. I don't think anyone is suggesting he be tried in Tests.
 
Devdutt Padikkal completed 700 runs in Vijay Hazare 2021 - he is the second batsman after Prithvi Shaw.

Any stats for top 5 batsman in VH trophy 2021? Think Shreyas also scored plenty of runs till he was part of that tournament.

For tests, it will be close between Devdutt, Jaiswal and if we can have an out of the box thinking - Washi as well, assuming hitman does not fire or if we want to build up reserves. Secondly, a LH and RH combo would be fantastic - Gill and Devdutt if they fire, could be long term have the advantage of youth on their side -but donot want to put the mockers.....
For white ball - again devdutt should be considered along with jaiswal. but the old firm of Shikki and Hitman should tide out for the time being.
However, I feel indian selectors should include these guys in the 15 and always try them out in the 3rd odi or 3rd T20 etc...
For Gill - defo feel he needs work on his front foot defensive techniques, but then guys like Zaheer A, mohd azhar, were also not great front foot defensiveplayrs, his game is down pat for bouncy Saf and aus wickets, andreson , broad and woakes in eng conditions would be a massive challenge.
Devdutt padikkal is also a good all round fielder...go well young man :vk
 
Averaging 85 in list a is unbelievable.

Any other cricket team besides india would rush him into the odi playing xi.

Royal Challengers Bangalore mauled Rajasthan Royals on Thursday to win their fourth straight game of Indian Premier League 2021. RCB restricted RR to a total of 177 runs after an impressive performance from Indian seamers Mohammed Siraj and Harshal Patel. But the real star of the show was Devdutt Padikkal, who slammed his maiden IPL ton against RR at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Padikkal scored 101 runs and helped RCB chase down RR's target in just 16.3 overs with ten wickets in hand in IPL 2021 match. It was an impressive display from the left-hander as he smashed 6 sixes and 11 fours during his 52-ball unbeaten knock.

Former India skipper and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar was also impressed with Padikkal's display on Thursday as he said that the 20-year-old could play for Team India 'sooner rather than later'.

"Won’t be surprised if he plays for India in any of the formats because he has got the class and the ability to do that. He is a heavy scorer in first-class cricket and Ranji Trophy as well gets big hundreds. In 50-overs cricket, he gets lots of runs and hundreds. Here, in the T20 domestic tournaments, he got lots of runs. So, I won’t be surprised if he is there sooner rather than later," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

"Karnataka has always produced a terrific line of batsmen. Gundappa Vishwanath, Rahul Dravid… then KL Rahul. And if KL Rahul, you know, some of the stars need to believe in themselves a little bit more. Sometimes you get the feeling that he doesn’t believe in himself. He is such a talented player And there is Mayank Agarwal, there is Karun Nair who got a triple hundred, he also needs to get his act together. It’s a terrific batting line-up Karnataka have," Gavaskar added.

"And Devdutt Padikkal is another one in that long line of batsmen who have delighted the Indian cricket lovers."

Devdutt Padikkal has been handed over a cap so he will be making his Test debut today replacing Rajat Patidar for the 5th and final Test match of the series against England. Good change IMO> Patidar had to go. Let's see what this young guy is made of.
 
This guy is on the crease and has already struck 2 fours in 14 balls he has faced till now.
 
Maiden fifty in Test match cricket on his debut for Devdutt Padikkal. Brilliant inning by this young guy. Still looking strong at the crease.
 
No feet movement. Won't succeed at the international stage. Will be a domestic bully.
 
People jinxed this guy. He is gone now for 65. Got cleaned by Bashir. Looked pretty impressive though.

Former Kaptaan will not play forever.

Never too early to check out potential replacements.

And every batter must at least start out as a domestic bully. Padikkal may not turn out a test batter but he has earned his place. And has done enough to not embarass himself.

He can get his opportunities. But I don't see him making it big at the international stage with the limitations he possesses. Will be happy to be proven otherwise.
 
I don’t know why Padikkal was picked for the Australia tour. In IPL, he always struggles against short-pitched balls and can’t negotiate bouncers, similar to Shreyas Iyer. I think he is better suited for the ODI format.
I hope he proves me wrong and scores some runs in this series.

We shouldn't be picking any IPL hero for our test team.

Has he done anything in Ranji?

Devdutt Padikkal may have frustrated the Aussie bowlers by batting time but he may well have a sleepless night. He becomes the first cricketer to remain unsold in IPL Auction 2025.
