WASHINGTON ‒ Dick Cheney, one of the most powerful vice presidents in United States history, a chief architect of the war in Iraq after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and a member of an old Republican Party guard that is quickly fading away, died on Monday night.

Cheney, whose death was confirmed by a statement from the Cheney family, was 84.

With his reputation as a war hawk, Cheney helped lead the push under President George W. Bush to invade Iraq based on intelligence ‒ later proven wrong ‒ that Saddam Hussein had amassed weapons of mass destruction.

Tapped by Bush as his 2000 running mate for his decades of Washington experience, Cheney became a top target of Bush critics for the enormous role he played in shaping the administration’s foreign policy.

A Republican congressman from Wyoming in the 1980s and Defense secretary for the elder President George H.W. Bush, Cheney's first prominent role in Washington was as deputy chief of staff and later White House chief of staff for President Gerald Ford.

After his two terms as vice president ended in 2009, Cheney became one of the nation's most prominent Republicans to oppose Donald Trump. Along with his daughter, Liz Cheney, a former congresswoman, Dick Cheney said that he voted for Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. "There has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump," Cheney said before the election, which Trump won.

Cant believe the Media labeling this guy as a " Great Human" when hes complicit in the mass murder of millions of Iraqis through lies and deception.

For most white Americans he is a hero along with Rumsfeld.

It all depends on which side it is seen from.
He had very low approval ratings. I think the lowest ever.

The neoconservatives, became deeply unpopular, they never got back into power but some have sneaked in under Trump.

Under Trump a lot of far right have gained oxygen to breathe.

Far left and far right have become the new Left vs Right now.

Rubio is one. As neocon as you can get, he’s old school.

He is not a hero for majority of veterans, who are you talking to, rabid hate against him even in segments of MAGA.
No one cares about Cheney now.

I lived in Texas when 911 happened. The entire nation was supporting GWB and Cheney along with Rumsfeld in the aftermath and the subsequent war to remove Saddam followed by war on terror. Hindsight no one likes them. MAGA considers all of those aforementioned people as wussies and traitors. Times changed. But back in 2001-2005, these same zeroes now were heroes back then.

Yeah they were then, heck Clinton was adored by youth back in the day, currently neither one is a hero.

Obama still has lot of following among youth but Bush was never in favor among Liberals then and now isnt even among conservatives.

I live in Texas too effin George Bush Turn Pike is what i drive through daily.. those days are long gone.

Yep, I can certainly vouch for that too.

Times change and the views change.

Politicians are same everywhere though. Opportunistic and lie for their benefit.

In this case I believe that Dick Cheney always held his neocon beliefs and 9/11 gave him an opportunity to stamp his beliefs and public ate it up.

In other words, Dick Cheney was always an evil person he just happened to be in the right place at the right time where his evil views were absorbed by mainstream people.

In all honesty he was as good and as bad as a Minister of any empire.
Made money for his family and corporations , sent troops to war acquired resources for the empire.

Big Oil for all its nonsense is still so prevalent coz these people, heck Polyester has become so prevalent since 1990s its annoying..that’s why Oil still rules people.

Yeah that's true. They were big figures on the international stage too.

Cheney was a VP for namesake. The guy always used to be in undisclosed location whenever the country needed him.. It was all GWB show and News channels had a field day calling him stupid and the skits on him were epic..

For sure. I have heard that Winston Churchill had a very low opinion about Indian people, but he is considered one of Britain's greatest PM because he was a winning war PM. Maybe he's even well regarded in India as well, I don't know.

Other than the educated intellectuals who gives interviews on TV, no one knows or cares about Churchill in India.

India had lots of deficiencies and they were thoroughly exploited by invaders for over 1000 yrs. I would prefer India to learn from its mistakes rather than cry about what so and so did to the country centuries ago. (y)

But Indians cry about Mughals incessantly so it is somewhat surprising if they don't care about Churchill.

unless he repented and we are not aware of it, good riddance. Spent his whole life hoarding wealth, now it will be distributed amongst others who will forget about him while he pays for his crimes in the grave and in hell. The children of Iraq will In Sha Allah have peaceful lives but peace is something this fool will never taste ever again unless again he changed his ways.

What a pathetic end. Fueling the punishment of the afterlife for momentary gains at the cost of human life. Like many, many others before him.

I didn’t have much awareness of US politics during 9/11 and the Iraq invasion years. It was only after watching the Christian Bale movie VICE that I started reading and watching more about Dick Cheney out of curiosity.

He emerged as a seasoned political operator with an obsessive craving for power. Someone who transformed the office of the Vice President from a ceremonial role into shadow presidency. Before Cheney, few saw the Vice Presidency as a position of real influence. That changed entirely under him as he expanded The Presidential executive powers to their limits.

He had psychotic obsession with security and foreign policy. Americans will call him a master strategist who prioritized America but to Iraqis and to many across the Middle East who lived through the devastation his decisions unleashed, he will always be remembered as a terrorist in a suit.

He pocketed big time, made bank as the yanks say.. his numerous ‘security’ companies, blackwater?! amongst others he owned were in charge of the mess they made in the first place and ironically they killed more civilians and were given free hand to do so..

Good riddance…

He wont be missed..

Rest in flames baby..

VP role went back to being more or less ceremonial after he left. He used his bullish / thuggish attitude and persona to leverage the VP position the way that he did, in a way VPs before and so far after him could not do.

Evil individual, should’ve used his talents in a more wholesome way… could’ve still made a lot of money that way.

Dubya was weak… and he saw his opportunity

Dubya didn’t know where he was half the time, as if he accidentally stumbled into the Oval Office and said “might as well”

Easiest ulloo to take advantage of

Don't y'all forget to thank Ralph Nader for putting Dick Cheney in power.

It might have also helped not to fund, sponsor and train Al Qaeda via Taliban

Brother, let’s not excuse Bush by calling him stupid. He knew what he was doing, he should have been in The Hague for war crimes and he was one of the orchestrators of the Iraq war.

No excuses for him. He’s an idiot. An evil idiot. But still an idiot.

Need someone easy to manipulate for the VP to have so much pull.

The fact that Cheney died in peace tells you everything you need to know about how broken the global "rules-based" world order is.

Same applies to Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice; some of whom are unfortunately still alive.

Murdered and tortured millions across the Middle East and made millions from lobbying after starting a war based on a complete lie.

I pray hell exists specifically for people like Dick Cheney.

Add Henry Kissinger to that as well who lived for a century but denied others the same right. A lot of people ran away from their crimes. Forget it anyway, the list is longer than anyone likes it to be
