US Capitol: 'Explosive device found', 4 dead & 52 arrested as Trump supporters clash with police

The FBI is investigating whether foreign governments, organisations or individuals provided financial support to people who helped plan and execute the January 6 attack on the Capitol, a news report said on Sunday.

As part of the investigation, the FBI is examining payments of $500,000 in bitcoin, apparently by a French national, to key figures and groups in the far right before the riot, one current and one former FBI official told NBC News.

The payments were documented and posted online last week by a company that analyses cryptocurrency transfers. Bitcoin payments can be traced because they are documented on a public ledger.

The current FBI official was quoted as saying the bitcoin transfers appear to have been made by a French computer programmer who took his own life on December 8 last year after triggering the transfers, according to French media.

The cryptocurrency payments prompted the FBI to examine whether any of the money was used to fund illegal acts, which, if true, raises the possibility of money-laundering and conspiracy charges, the FBI official said.

On December 8, Chainalysis reported the donor sent 28.15 BTC – worth about $522,000 at the time of transfer – to 22 separate addresses, many of which belong to far-right activists.

The Chainalysis blog post, first highlighted by Yahoo News, said far-right podcaster Nick Fuentes received the most money, 13.5 BTC – worth about $250,000.

Separately, a joint threat assessment issued last week by the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and various other federal and DC-area police agencies noted since the deadly January 6 riot, “Russian, Iranian, and Chinese influence actors have seized the opportunity to amplify narratives in furtherance of their policy interest amid the presidential transition.”

Russian state and proxy media outlets “have amplified themes related to the violent and chaotic nature of the Capitol Hill incident, impeachment of President Donald Trump, and social media censorship”, the unclassified intelligence report said.

“In at least one instance, a Russian proxy claimed that ANTIFA members disguised themselves as supporters of President Trump, and were responsible for storming the Capitol building.”

Chinese media, meanwhile, “have seized the story to denigrate US democratic governance, casting the United States as broadly in decline – and to justify China’s crackdown on protesters in Hong Kong”.

The examination of possible foreign influence related to the Capitol riot, which involves the FBI’s counterintelligence division, comes after years of what current and former FBI officials say is mounting evidence that Russia and other foreign adversaries have sought to secretly support “political extremists” on the far right and far left.

Law enforcement officials and security analysts say there has long been “a mutual affection between Western white supremacists and the Russian government”, as two scholars put it in a February paper on the JustSecurity website.

Some senators were concerned enough about the issue that they inserted a requirement in the 2021 defence bill that the Pentagon “report to Congress on the extent of Russian support for ‘racially and ethnically motivated violent extremist groups and networks in Europe and the United States’ – and what can be done to counter it”.

Fuentes, who spoke at pro-Trump rallies last year in Michigan and Washington, DC, told the ProPublica news organisation he was at the “Stop the Steal” rally on Wednesday, January 6, but did not follow the mob into the Capitol.

One group of Fuentes’ supporters, which calls itself the Groyper Army, was filmed running through the Capitol carrying a large blue flag with the America First logo, ProPublica reported.

“We’re looking at and treating this just like a significant international counter-terrorism or counter-intelligence operation,” Michael Sherwin, the US attorney in Washington, DC, said at a news briefing last week.

“We’re looking at everything: Money, travel records, looking at disposition, movement, communication records.”

Security officials testify Capitol rioters 'came prepared for war'

US Capitol security officials who were ousted in the wake of the 6 January attack on Congress have blamed intelligence failures for the breach.

Testifying to a Senate committee, the officials said that the rioters "came prepared for war" with weapons, radios and climbing gear.

Ex-Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund said he had prepared for a protest, not "a military-style coordinated assault".

Four people died after pro-Trump protesters stormed the US Capitol.

Three of the four officials testifying on Tuesday to the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee resigned in the immediate wake of the attack, in which one Capitol Police officer was killed.

Acting Washington DC police chief Robert Contee III told lawmakers, who are holding the first public hearing into the attack, that he was "stunned" by how long it took for the Pentagon to deploy National Guard troops to help quell the riots.

Democrats charge that the attack amounted to an insurrection, and impeached former President Donald Trump for allegedly inciting the mob. He was later acquitted by the Senate, becoming the first president in US history to be impeached twice.

Capitol riot 'inspiration for extremism', FBI boss warns

The number of US homegrown terror cases has risen sharply, the FBI boss has said, as he warned that the deadly January Capitol riot may serve as 'inspiration' for extremists.

Some 2,000 FBI domestic terror probes are open, up from 1,400 at the end of 2020, Director Christopher Wray said.

Arrests of "racially motivated violent extremists," including white supremacists, have tripled since 2017.

For the first time, Mr Wray called the Capitol siege "domestic terrorism".

The attack could be "inspiration to a number of terrorist extremists," he told a Senate hearing on Tuesday.

Over 260 people have been arrested in connection with the storming of the US Capitol to date.

US Capitol police warn of possible militia plot to breach Congress

Security has been ramped up at the US Capitol in response to "a possible plot to breach" the building on Thursday, Capitol police say.

The move was prompted by intelligence about threats made by a militia group, a statement said.

The force said it was "prepared for any potential threats towards members of Congress".

The House of Representatives scrapped Thursday's session after the threat was revealed.

However the Senate, which also convenes in the Capitol, plans to go ahead with a debate on President Joe Biden's $1.9 trillion (£1.36 trillion) Covid-19 relief bill.

12 Republicans vote against honoring Capitol police for protecting Congress

A dozen Republicans voted against a resolution honoring US Capitol police for their efforts to protect members of Congress during the insurrection on 6 January.

The House voted 413-12 on Wednesday to award congressional gold medals, Congress’s “highest expression of national appreciation”, to all members of the Capitol police force.

The Republicans who opposed this honor included Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Matt Gaetz of Florida and Thomas Massie of Kentucky. They and other opposing members said they had problems with the text of the legislation.

Massie told reporters he disagreed with the terms “insurrection” and “temple” in the legislation.

The resolution said: “On January 6, 2021, a mob of insurrectionists forced its way into the US Capitol building and congressional office buildings and engaged in acts of vandalism, looting, and violently attacked Capitol police officers.”

It also named the three officers who responded to the attack and died shortly after – Capitol police officers Brian Sicknick and Howard Liebengood and Metropolitan police department officer Jeffrey Smith – and said seven other people died and more than 140 law enforcement officers were injured.

“The desecration of the US Capitol, which is the temple of our American democracy, and the violence targeting Congress are horrors that will forever stain our nation’s history,” the bill said.

Louie Gohmert, a congressman from Texas, said in a statement that the text “does not honor anyone, but rather seeks to drive a narrative that isn’t substantiated by known facts”.

Gohmert separately circulated a competing bill to honor Capitol police that did not mention the 6 January attack, according to a copy obtained by Politico. His text also named the officers who died after the insurrection but did not specify the circumstances of their deaths, writing instead that they: “All passed in January 2021.”

The other Republicans who voted against the legislation were Andy Biggs of Arizona, Andy Harris of Maryland, Lance Gooden of Texas, Michael Cloud of Texas, Andrew Clyde of Georgia, Greg Steube of Florida, Bob Good of Virginia and John Rose of Tennessee.

All of the bill’s opponents, except for Massie, voted to object to state’s electoral votes in the presidential election in the hours after the insurrection.

Putin sees 'double standard' in US Capitol riot prosecutions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the US of double standards for its treatment of the Capitol rioters.

He said it was wrong for the US to criticise crackdowns on anti-government protests overseas, while prosecuting Americans with "political demands".

Speaking at a business forum in St Petersburg, Mr Putin set expectations low for his summit with US President Joe Biden in Geneva, Switzerland.

He said he expected no breakthroughs when the two meet on 16 June.

He also denied suggestions that recent cyber-attacks on US companies had originated in Russia, and rejected claims that Moscow had meddled in American elections.

Guilty pleas for men who took photos at Pelosi's office on Jan. 6

WASHINGTON, July 23 (Reuters) - Two Ohio men face up to six months in prison after pleading guilty on Friday to disorderly conduct during the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, where one photographed the other in the offices of House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Derek Jancart, 39, of Canal Winchester, Ohio, and fellow Ohioan Erik Rau, 28, are at least the 20th and 21st persons to plead guilty to criminal charges stemming from the Jan. 6 attack, when thousands of supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the building in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election.

More than 535 people have been charged with taking part in the violence. Trump falsely claims he lost the election because of widespread electoral fraud.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Jancart posted pictures on Facebook from the riot, including a photograph taken from outside Pelosi's conference room showing Rau inside the room which carried the caption "We're in."

During hearings before U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, Jancart and Rau, appearing via video link, both acknowledged that they entered the Capitol during the riot and went to Pelosi's office. Jancart acknowledged he photographed Rau inside the room.

Jancart and Rau both were initially charged with four riot-related misdemeanors after their arrests. Jancart was arrested in February while Rau was not arrested until earlier this month.

Both men pleaded guilty to single counts of disorderly conduct in the U.S. Capitol building. They face a maximum sentence of six months and a $5,000 fine, though Boasberg could sentence them to probation. Sentencing for both men was set for Sept. 29.

A prominent supporter of the baseless conspiracy theory QAnon has accepted a plea deal in federal court for his involvement in the US Capitol riots.

Jacob Anthony Chansley was one of thousands of Trump supporters who attempted to prevent the US Congress from certifying the 2020 election.

Chansley pleaded guilty on Friday to one felony count of obstruction in an official proceeding.

Nearly 600 people have been charged in the federal investigation of the riot.

At least 36 defendants have to date pleaded guilty, eight of whom have pleaded guilty to felonies, according to CBS News.

Chansley became the de facto face of the siege, pictured amid the unrest in horns and a bearskin headdress, with the American flag painted on his face. He called himself the "QAnon Shaman".

QAnon is a wide-ranging conspiracy theory whose followers believe former President Donald Trump was waging a secret war against elite Satan-worshipping paedophiles in government, business and the media.

Chansley told the FBI he came to DC "at the request of the president that all 'patriots' come to DC".

He has been in custody for eight months.

His attorney Albert Watkins told the court on Friday his client was "non-violent, peaceful and possessed of genuine mental health issues".

Chansley - who has made several request for his release - now claims to disavow both QAnon and Mr Trump.

He is due to be sentenced in November and could face up to 51 months in prison.

Supporters of the Capitol riot defendants are reportedly planning a large demonstration in DC later this month.

President Joe Biden has marked one year since the deadly assault on the US Capitol by condemning political violence in an address to the nation, as he also hit out at his predecessor Donald Trump.

On 6 January 2021, Trump supporters stormed the complex in Washington DC.

Five people died, 15 police officers needed hospital treatment and millions of dollars worth of damage was caused.

Politicians were forced to run for safety as the mob tried to disrupt the certification of Mr Biden's election victory.

Following the unrest, Mr Trump was accused of encouraging rioters to march to the Capitol after falsely claiming Mr Biden's victory over him in the 2020 election was "stolen".

Marking the first anniversary of the insurrection, Mr Biden launched a scathing attack on Mr Trump.

Speaking from the Statuary Hall of the US Capitol, he said the former president has "spread a web of lies" about the election.

"He's done so because he values power over principle," Mr Biden said.

Mr Biden blamed the former Republican leader for the attack - which has fundamentally changed Congress and raised global concerns about the future of American democracy.

"For the first time in our history, a president not just lost an election, he tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power as a violent mob breached the Capitol," Mr Biden said. "But they failed."

He said Mr Trump "can't accept he lost".

"Even though that's what 93 United States senators, his own attorney general, his own vice president, governors and state officials in every battleground state have all said... he lost. That's what 81 million of you did as you voted for a new way forward."

Mr Biden continued: "He has done what no president in American history has ever, ever done. He refused to accept the results of an election."

In his address, Mr Biden also asked Americans to close their eyes and recall what they saw on this date last year.

"Democracy was attacked," he said. "We the people endure. We the people prevailed."

He described the harrowing, violent scene of the riots, including the mob attacking police, threatening the House speaker, putting up gallows threatening to hang then-vice president Mike Pence - all while then-President Trump sat at the White House watching it on TV.

"Here is God's truth about 6 January 2021," Mr Biden said. "They were looking to subvert the constitution."

He asked the nation who they wanted to be as he reflected on the deadly event.

He said: "And so at this moment we must decide what kind of nation we are going to be.

"Are we going to be a nation that accepts political violence as a norm?"

He continued: "We cannot allow ourselves to be that kind of nation. The way forward is to recognise the truth and to live by it."

Trump responds

The former president has released a statement in response to Mr Biden's remarks, attacking the Democrat's leadership.

He said: "Biden, who is destroying our Nation with insane policies of open borders, corrupt elections, disastrous energy policies, unconstitutional mandates, and devastating school closures, used my name today to try to further divide America.

"This political theatre is all just a distraction for the fact Biden has completely and totally failed.

"Our country no longer has borders, has totally and completely lost control of COVID (record numbers!), is no longer energy independent, inflation is rampant, our military is in chaos, and our exit, or surrender, from Afghanistan, was perhaps the most embarrassing day in the long and distinguished history of the United States - and so much more."

He added that the Democrats "want to own this day of 6 January so they can stoke fears and divide America. I say, let them have it because America sees through their lies and polarisations".

Divide between parties

A series of remembrance events will be attended by Democrats throughout the day, in person and virtually, but almost every Republican on Capitol Hill will be absent - a stark reminder of the divide between the two parties.

While most congressional Republicans condemned the attack shortly after it occurred, most have stayed loyal to Mr Trump.

In December, the former president lost a bid to shield documents from a House committee investigation into the Capitol riots.

Documents including presidential diaries, visitor logs and speech drafts were ordered to be released after an appeals court rejected Mr Trump's arguments to keep the documents sealed.

The panel investigating the riots later revealed Donald Trump Jr texted the White House chief of staff during the Capitol riot, telling him his father had to "condemn this s*** ASAP".
