Diego Costa was booed by the Brazilian crowd during his first appearance on home soil since electing to play for World Cup rivals Spain.

Chelsea target Costa started up front for the world champions and won a penalty in the Group B opener against Holland but was greeted with a stormy reception at the Arena Fonte Nova for turning his back on his country in favour of his adopted homeland.

From his first touch of the ball just five minutes in, the 35-goal Atletico Madrid frontman drew boos and jeers as he donned a Spain shirt for just the third time.

He made two appearances for Brazil, both in friendlies, before personally writing to FIFA to ask if he could switch nationality – with the move confirmed in October last year.

Ahead of the rerun of the 2010 World Cup final in Salvador, Costa spoke out about the jibes he had faced for quitting Brazil in favour of his new international side.

‘I have confirmed that Spain is my country and the Spanish people are behind me,’ he said. ‘The criticism of my decision does not affect me.’

‘Brazil are serious contenders too but they are under a lot of pressure from their supporters. The people expect them to be in the final and that makes it tough for them.’

After watched Brazil win their opening game against Croatia on Thursday night, Costa won a penalty to allow Xabi Alonso to give Spain a first half lead in his most significant action in the international football so far.

The 25-year-old looks to be on the verge of joining Chelsea this summer in a £32million deal, as well as carrying the pressure of a nation now used to success on the world stage.

Well, he CHOSE to switch to Spain; knowing that the WC will be held in Brazil. The crowd have every right to be disappointed. I'm sure they'd have Costa instead of Fred or Jo upfront.

They paid their money to attend, they can do whatever they want.

I'm just glad it doesn't happen in cricket, otherwise a lot of England's players could in theory get booed.

It may make sense to boo Costa, however the Brazilian fans seem to very unsportsmanlike as they booed Croatia in the first game and were booing Spain in last year's Confederations Cup as well.

You think we wouldn't boo someone who had played a couple of international games for Pakistan, and changed ahead of a pending World Cup in Pakistan to another team because the 'pressure will be too much for the home side'?

Was not Sajid Mahmood booed by the British Pakistanis while playing for England against Pakistan?

Yeah they did, i think in 2007 pak played eng at edgbaston. Sajjid was man of the match in that game to :)) i was at the game, it was not just booing some other filthy things were said too....

Why did costa move to spain anyway and decide to play for them?

I was at that game too, it took place in sept 2006. He was fielding on the boundary near me and the guys behind me were calling him a traitor. They did a 360 when the game was over and were shouting out well played Saj when he got his MoM award, like they had been supporting him all the time. [emoji1]

"A Brazilian player who refuses to wear the shirt of the Brazilian national team and compete in a World Cup in your country is automatically withdrawn. He is turning his back on a dream of millions, to represent our national team, the five-time champions in a World Cup in Brazil."

They won't be booing him for much longer

MADRID (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa appeared in court wearing a white mask in the Spanish capital on Thursday to ratify a pact he made with prosecutors to resolve a tax fraud case against him.

Prosecutors were asking for a six-month jail sentence and a fine of 507,208 euros ($564,877 dollars) to punish Costa for defrauding the Spanish state of 1,014,416 euros in 2014.

According to a court filing published last month, Costa, 31, did not declare payments of 5,150,622 euros from his 2014 transfer from Atletico to Chelsea in his tax return, as well as more than one million euros in image rights.

In accordance with Spanish law which allows penal sentences below two years for non-violent crimes to be exchanged for a financial penalty, Costa has agreed to pay an additional fine of 36,500 euros on top of the 507,208 euros to avoid jail time.

“Diego Costa reached an agreement a few months ago with the prosecutor and has already paid the corresponding fine plus interest and the request for a prison sentence was withdrawn,” an Atletico spokesman told Reuters on Wednesday.

“This week it is expected that agreement will be ratified in court, as is mandatory.”

Spain international Costa, who was wearing a mask due to the COVID-19 pandemic, returned to Atletico from Chelsea in 2017 for a reported 55 million euros after helping fire the London side to two Premier League titles.
