I was expecting actually - wrote that in the 5th match thread. He is a great cricketer, who should never face sacking, and he helped himself in that regard by stepping down.

Wish him a great career going forward - a truly world class player, but not the best Captaincy material.

Right decision.

As MMHS says, a world class player but far from a world class captain. Too many times under Mathews he's allowed games to drift and shown a lack of tactical nous.

Appointing him wasn't wrong decision, in that regard can't blame SLCB, but sometimes these things don't work. No one should ever blame BCCI to appoint Tendulkar, and I won't have believed ever, had I not seen him in action as Captain.

Chandimal has the right personality to take charge, I believe; provided that he has support from Board & a capable coaching staff; may be Moody, who probably has just missed the gravy train.

The right decision. Better to let him concentrate on his batting. He seemed clueless tactically.

Right thing to do. His place in the side is itself costing the team balance a lot. He is in &I out for the last 18 months due to injury. He hasn't comeback properly from injury yet. Also the team is not playing as a unit under him. He is tactically good but exceeds Misbah when it comes to defensive captaincy.

I think tharanga will take charge, interesting to see how Mathews will play under tharangas captaincy.

They need a swashbuckler as captain to get the best out of them. In a lot of ways their team is like ours. They need either dickwella or gunathilaka to be captain.

He was a poor captain to begin with.

Sri Lanka have an exciting young unit that will take time to be as competitive as they were in 90s&00s but they need someone like Ranatunga that inspires them to punch above their weight.

Good decision, he's an excellent cricket who should bat up the order and SL should look for an alternative cricketer that can win matches for his team.

Unfortunately, injuries have plagued Mathews' career. He was a pretty good bowler and a fine batsman.

Good decision - Matthews has been poor for as long as I can remember.

Angelo Mathews: Sri Lankan sacked as limited-overs captain before England tour

Sri Lanka's cricket board have sacked limited-overs captain Angelo Mathews after their exit from the Asia Cup.

Test captain Dinesh Chandimal will lead the team in all formats for the series against England.

Sri Lanka face England in five one-day matches, a one-off Twenty20 contest and three Tests, starting on 10 October.

Mathews - who was ODI and T20 captain - has been criticised for his leadership at the Asia Cup, with Sri Lanka losing to Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka were beaten by 137 runs against Bangladesh in their opening match of the tournament in the United Arab Emirates and failed to make the Super Four stage.

They have lost 30 of their 40 matches since January 2017.

The Sri Lanka Cricket board released a statement announcing the move but did not say why Mathews was sacked.

Chandimal has done a good job in tests. The only problem about making him captain in ODIs is does he make the team on merit? His record isn't impressive but I'm sure he will do a better job than Matthews.

Dinesh Chandimal replaces Angelo Mathews as Sri Lanka ODI captain

Dinesh Chandimal has been appointed Sri Lanka ODI captain following the team’s early exit from the ongoing Asia Cup in the UAE.

He will replace Angelo Mathews whom Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board has requested to relinquish the role. At the Asia Cup, Sri Lanka exited in the first round itself after humiliating defeats to Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

In a statement on Sunday, SLC said, “The national selectors on Sunday decided to appoint Dinesh Chandimal as the ODI captain to lead the team in the upcoming England series. Accordingly, they have requested Angelo Mathews to relinquish his duties as the national ODI and T20I captain, with immediate effect.”

Chandimal already leads Sri Lanka in Test cricket and has the experience captaining them in seven ODIs – winning five and losing two.

Mathews was reinstated as the limited-overs captain in January this year but disappointing results in two successive series – they lost to South Africa 2-3 in a five-ODI series at home in August – led him to be replaced by Chandimal.

Mathews, 31, was Sri Lankan ODI captain between 2013 and 2017 and resigned from the role after a home series defeat to Zimbabwe. After the appointment of new coach Chandika Hathurusingha, the allrounder was handed back the responsibility.

Chandimal’s first challenge as captain will be a five-match ODI series at home against England that starts from October 10.

Lol while we wrist our slits over Pakistan. Look at Sri Lanka, they wasted so much precious time, energy in grooming Angelo Mathews as captain when the likes of Sangakarra and Jaywardene were playing only for Mathews to fail to live up to the expectations. Now a new captain who is uncertain of his place in the playing eleven will be given the role without any respectable senior players remaining to guide him.

I have come across similar newz many times the last couple of years.

Merry go round

This. I think Chandimal and Mathews have both had 3 stints of captaincy each, in the last 6 years. They just keep switching between them after every series loss or injury.

Why not try someone else for a change? Give the captaincy to Dhananjaya de Silva. He's the best batsman in the team anyway.

Is it some sort of musical chairs or what?

Tharanga
Mathews
Chandimal
Perera
Mathews
Chandimal

Is it decided by board or some gully Panchayat?

Good call - hope one for the last time for few years. Though I would have taken Thisara, but still much better than Angelo.

Asia Cup 2018: Sanath Jayasuriya, Aravinda de Silva slam Sri Lankan team for early exit

Former captains Sanath Jayasuriya and Aravinda de Silva slammed Sri Lanka for their sub-par performance in the ongoing Asia Cup, according to a report in Hindustan Times. Sri Lanka have won the title five times, but this time they could not even make it to the top four. They were thrashed by both Bangladesh and Afghanistan, making an unceremonious exit from the tournament.

“It is very painful to see the current status. There is no pride in our cricket at the moment. When you lose, you are under pressure, but you should be able to absorb it. I am not too sure that is happening. This is the best time to come out of it because it cannot get worse than this,” said Jayasuriya.

He criticised the inability of the batsmen to pick up singles: “I am shocked at how they have got some of the basics wrong. Running between the wickets looks awful. There’s no trust among the batsmen. Aravinda and I used simply make eye-contact and run without even calling.”

Jayasuriya cited examples of India and Pakistan: “A huge concern is that the guys who get starts are not able to finish things off. Batsmen like Rohit Sharma and Shoaib Malik have shown in this tournament how it should be done. We are going to face a huge crisis moving forward unless we fix the issues.

“Only eight teams will play the Champions Trophy and only 10 teams will play the World Cup. We are going to miss out in future if we are not going to sort these issues. Some of the younger cricketing nations have shown professionalism. We cannot take anyone lightly these days. Smaller teams are getting more exposure and they are a threat. “At the moment we look below par in all three departments and our fitness is a huge concern for me.”

De Silva sounded disappointment as well: “Losing is part of the game, but the sad part is that we haven’t got our strategies sorted out. They have no idea what they are doing. There is no proper direction and clarity. The batting is a mess. We have to set each batsman a role and set the batting line-up accordingly. They are still continuing trial and error which is dangerous considering the World Cup is nine months away.

“I am appalled with our fielding. That is not excusable. It has got nothing to do with talent. It is mainly hard work. I am not too sure whether they are placing enough emphasis on fielding. They are carrying a few older players and those players need to be positioned in certain areas and work on that. By now it should have happened.

“I also see that they are opening with Kusal Mendis. Well, I am not too sure whether he is an opener. His technique and temperament are such that he is better off at number four. Kusal is a guy who has got all the shots and should play the anchor. They need to understand his strength and strategise accordingly.

“I am glad that Lasith Malinga has returned to the side and that has given some variation to the attack. We have to analyse properly and make some decisions moving forward.”

Snubbed by selectors, Angelo Mathews demands fitness test: reports

Mathews has reportedly asked the selectors to conduct a fitness test after he was told he would not be picked for the home series with England on account of fitness concerns.

Angelo Mathews has reportedly demanded a fitness test from the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) selectors after being told that he will not be selected for the home series versus England next month.

According to reports in the Sri Lankan media, Mathews met with Sri Lanka’s head coach Chandika Hathurasingha at SLC’s high performance centre, where he was told that the selectors had concerns over his fitness and would not pick him for the home series versus England starting October 10.

The reports come a day after Mathews submitted a letter to SLC in which accused the board of blaming him solely for the team’s exit from the 2018 Asia Cup last week. In his letter dated September 23, Mathews also threatened to retire from ODIs and T20Is after being dumped as captain of the limited-overs teams.

The 31-year-old has scored 315 runs in eight ODIs this year, at an average of 52.50 and strike rate of just over 75 with two fifties, and over the past two years averages 59.20 in the format. Mathews has played one T20I in 2018, in which he was out for zero. His form in T20I has been poor over the past two years, with 68 runs in five innings of which an unbeaten 54 came in one match in January 2017.

Sri Lanka drop Angelo Mathews for England ODIs

Angelo Mathews has been dropped from the Sri Lanka one-day international squad for the upcoming series against England, with selectors citing fitness concerns as the reason for the decision.

Mathews was the team's captain during the Asia Cup 2018, where Sri Lanka crashed out after heavy defeats to Bangladesh and Afghanistan – he was subsequently asked to step down from the role and make way for Dinesh Chandimal, who was out of the Asia Cup with an injury, to take the reins.

Mathews has been among Sri Lanka's best ODI batsmen in recent times – in the last 12 months he has scored 468 runs from 11 matches at a fine 66.85, well clear of second-placed Upul Tharanga's 36.33.

Mathews has, however, been retained in the 16-man Test squad, which also includes Kaushal Silva, who last played a Test in October 2016, and Malinda Pushpakumara, who has played only two Tests till date. Lahiru Kumara has been included but his participation is subject to fitness.

Mathews, No.25 on the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for batsmen, was also the leading run-scorer from either side in the recent ODIs at home against South Africa, scoring 235 runs from five matches, including a match-winning 97* in the final match.

Among other changes, batsman Kusal Mendis and Shehan Jayasuriya were left out while Sadeera Samarawickrama was recalled. Fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep was also brought back with Suranga Lakmal left out. In the spin department, Dilruwan Perera was dropped to make way for Lakshan Sandakan.

Mendis and Lakmal were named as stand-bys alongside Shehan Madushanka, Dimuth Karunaratne and Jeffrey Vandersay.

ODI squad: Dinesh Chandimal (c), Upul Tharanga, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, Akila Dananjaya, Dushmantha Chameera, Lasith Malinga, Amila Aponso, Lakshan Sandakan, Nuwan Pradeep, Kasun Rajitha, Kusal Perera

Test squad: Dinesh Chandimal (c), Dimuth Karunaratne, Kaushal Silva, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Roshen Silva, Dilruwan Perera, Rangana Herath, Malinda Pushpakumara, Akila Dananjaya, Suranga Lakmal, Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara (subject to fitness), Lakshan Sandakan, Niroshan Dickwella (wk)
