Often actors who portray roles in the sphere of drama/thriller/crime genre's tend to be awarded for their fantastic performances, do excellent comedy performances get overlooked and have we undervalued ones ability to make us laugh ?

Beyond awards, when it comes to the greatest actors ever as well; it's not rare to not find the great comedy actors in history in top 5 lists or even top 10's at times.

Obviously there are some actors who are very versatile and have performed exceptionally well across all genre's and it's understandable why they would be ranked so highly but in situations where you have a specific actor who specialises in comedy or drama/crime/thriller; often you'd find that the comedy performance is overlooked ahead of the performance in drama/crime/thriller.

Although it has to be said that in recent times there's not a lot which stands out when it comes to comedy but generally speaking on the whole what are your thoughts.

Absolutely, it's criminal how underrated and underappreciated comedy actors are. It's a joke that guys like Jim Carrey, Bill Murray, Gene Wilder etc have never won an Oscar.

Well said, add Joe Pesci and Robin Williams to that list as well although they have been rewarded for efforts in other genre's. I was just thinking the other day these guys are a bit undervalued when it came to their ability to make people laugh, I don't think anyone has ever adequately replaced them with similar feats whilst leaving us with memorable moments and performances which just goes to show that comedy itself is not exactly a genre which is easy to master.

Joe Pesci is incredibly funny even in serious roles in films such as Goodfellas and Casino but I loved his performance in My Cousin Vinny.

Arguably comedy is harder than drama but you are spot on as to why they dont get the same recognition. I think it may be down to comedy films not winning awards reguarly therefore performances are also over looked.

My all time favourite comedy is Stir Crazy, Gene Wilder and Richard Pryer were brilliant.

I think the only true global comedian superstar was Jim Carey and robin williams to an extent.. Compared to other genres where tom cruise, brad Pitt, leonardo Di caprio, vin diesel etc are global celebrities..

Comedy as a genre is underrated in terms of acting ability I think..

And in Home Alone as well :)) that was me entire childhood, such performances capture your imagination in a special way and really emphasise that feel good factor after a roller coaster ride.

Plus I think it's also down to movie snobbery, a lot of the so called experts are heavily biased towards the stereotypical dramas which is designed to win loads of awards. But I agree that comedies in general have been lacking big time in quality in recent times although they still tend to thrive as a sub-genre of animated productions which are very driven by character and emotion. But such movies ought to get awarded by default because of the best animated feature category.

Will watch that have not seen it befefore

Vin Diesel, Dwayne Sell Out / Pathetic / Disgraceful Johnson etc :yk2 #SharamFuls :mv

Yeah I agree, it's not as easy to master as people which may explain the lack of decent comedies these days. Who is the next Carey or Williams ? out there, am not sure. Maybe we should give Jinder Mahal an award for the most hilarious run as champ :))

Lol well rock was a superstar even before he went into movies after that he just became even bigger.. Vin diesel, rock etc being global superstars proves that action flicks are the most commercially viable movies internationally.. You don't need acting but a good physique and good action to become a global superstar..

It's difficult for comedy In a way that globally the culture is different something which you find funny in America might not be funny in Asia or Europe so to become a global icon in such a market is very difficult..

lol I have been watching a little Bt wrestling these days jinder mahal is pretty beefed up and those two sidekicks are funny.. Undoubtedly the second best WWE champion ever after the great khali..

Im sersiously shocked you have not seen Stir Crazy ! :sanga

Greatest comedy of all time. Ive watched it around 20 times.

They don't need awards, they have their fans,Steve Martin was remarkable for so many years although he was not only comedian, the reason why they don't come into top categories probably is coz the top actors are able to do comedy as well eg:Tom Hanks ,De Niro,Jack Nicholson again Al Pacino might get voted as amazing and top or what not,but imo still is very overrated.

The only one whom I think never went into complete comedy movies is Daniel Day Lewis and I don't understand why considering he loves to take challenges,he does have raw humor though(Gangs of New York).
