Police brutality is a topic that comes up a lot in North America. There is a perception that cops use excessive force and people aren't too happy about it. As a result, various groups (for example - Black Lives Matter) have formed.

Do you think that people tend to overreact when it comes to police brutality?

When I compare North American cops with cops from South America, Asia, and Africa, they don't seem that brutal to me. It is all about perspective perhaps.

Discuss.

Policing is not an easy job and it's very stressful, especially at the lower level where you are interacting with public. I have few friends that are cops and one guy who quit his state trooper job and went to trimming trees, because he could not handle the stress.
In western countries there are laws and policies that keep the LEO's in check, unlike in third world countries. Problem with police here in the US is, they don't get proper training. It takes 6 months to become a cop, they don't know the law they are enforcing that's why police make up law as they go. They need more training on dealing with public and how to deescalate.

I got stopped by cops 3-4 times. There was never any incident. We actually had friendly discussions.

Cops only use force when you behave like a jerk. Just play it cool and things should be fine.

Yea, but behaving like a jerk is not against the law, police are Law Enforcement Officers, not feelings got hurt enforcers. They should be able to handle jerks and strictly enforce the law.

If there is any unfair treatment, file a complaint or file a lawsuit. No need to create a scene. It is unfortunate that many folks love to cause dramas when it comes to cops.

Wow, down playing killing of minorities by police officer.

Being a jerk should not get you shot, does not happen in Canada, England, Australia, France or any other developed countries.

But you chose to compare it with South American countries, wonder why?

Excessive force is killing a person with no weapon, that is what (Live matter) protest is about.

What's the complaint is going to do? They will sit down and laugh it off, or do the " we did an internal investigation and officer was found not guilty." Also police have Qualified immunity that will protect them.

I am a minority myself. I never got shot or got bullied by cops. Neither did any of my family members or friends (all are minorities).

If cop is bullying you, maybe ask why that's the case. Not all minorities get bullied by cops.

Also, I compared it with South America/Asia/Africa because I wanted to give some perspectives.

Why are you intentionally ignoring the main point, people getting shot and killed with no weapon by the police, it does not happen anywhere in any developed countries but USA.

Getting bullied and getting shot isn't the same.

Comparing with third world countries to give perspective, why not compare it with rest of the developed countries?

You are ignoring many facts.

I recognize that cops shouldn't use excessive force when the suspect is unarmed. If any cop breaks that rule, he/she is guilty. No question.

However, why take it to that level in the first place?

I have relatives and friends (all are 100% minorities) in USA and they never had a single issue with cops. Maybe they don't present themselves in a way that cause agitation from cops?

Best way to avoid trouble is to present yourself well and speak politely (which many aren't willing to do).

Let me try again and I hope this time you get this simple concept.

People aren’t only being polite in US but in other developed countries as well but they aren’t getting shot and sent home in a box like in US.

And if police is killing you for not being polite and you don’t see that as a problem then why anyone wasting their time?

How many are getting shot daily? Do you have any statistics?

They are also humans.

When sportsmen are subject to a jerk supporter we completely understand why they lash out. We completely understand why they get frustrated.

We dont care if a policeman has to endure this type of treatment constantly day after day.

.

I am Muslim, I lived in the US during and after 9/11. I was a practicing Muslim, but never faced any racism or abuse. No one discriminated against me for being a Muslim.

So if any Muslim faced abuse or racism in America, they should ask why that's the case. Not all Muslims face racism and abuse, so if someone did, it is probably their fault

See how dumb this sounds even if its true?

I just used the "it did not happen to me so if it happens to someone else, it is probably their fault" card

There are obviously exceptions.

If you seek trouble, you generally get trouble. If you play it cool, generally nothing happens. Key is to use common sense.

Police men and women signed up for this and supposedly received training. We have also given them the authority to detain and even take down citizens who are breaking the law, whereas sportsmen don't have any of these authority.

A French minister has ordered the suspension of police officers filmed beating and racially abusing a black music producer in Paris on Saturday.

The incident was captured on CCTV and made headline news on French television channels.

Videos first published on Thursday by French news website Loopsider show the violent arrest of Michel Zecler, in the 17th arrondissement of the French capital on Saturday.

The footage shows three officers following Mr Zecler inside his music studio, where he is punched and beaten with a truncheon.

Mr Zecler told reporters on Thursday he had been walking around nearby without a face mask - against French COVID-19 health protocols - and upon seeing a police car, went into his music studio to avoid getting a fine.

However, the police allegedly followed him inside and attacked him.

"I was lucky enough, unlike many other people, to have had the video that protects me," he said.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has ordered the suspension of officers involved and said they would be sanctioned if the alleged wrongdoing was confirmed.

"When people overstep the boundaries, they must give up the uniform of the Republic, they must be sanctioned and they must be punished by the justice system," Mr Darmanin said.

Earlier, he said on Twitter that France's IGPN police watchdog is investigating the allegations.

Two of France's top football players, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe, spoke out against police violence on their Twitter feeds.

"Unbearable video, inadmissible violence," Mbappe tweeted.

According to Le Parisien newspaper, based on the written record of the officers' declarations the day after the arrest, police said he seemed "nervous" and a "strong drug smell" was emanating from him, adding that he was getting "dangerous" toward them.

Mr Zecler's lawyer said: "My client never committed any violence against the police.

"He did not even defend himself."

French President Emmanuel Macron was "very shocked" by images purporting to show Mr Zecler being beaten by Paris police, BFM TV reported.

The Paris police force has already faced criticism this week after people posted videos on social media of police hitting demonstrators as they cleared a migrant camp in central Paris on Monday.

Mr Darmanin called the images "shocking" and said the officers who carried out the violence would be punished.

Hafida El-Ali, the lawyer representing Mr Zecler, said her client would be making a formal complaint against the police over the incident.

She told the Associated Press; "He asked them what they wanted, if they wanted to check his identity... They didn't stop beating him, the video of the violence (inside the studio) lasts for 12 minutes."

France's government is trying to push through a law that would make it a crime to circulate images of police officers in certain circumstances.

Following protest by journalists' organisations and opposition politicians, the prime minister's office said on Thursday it will set up a commission, tasked with proposing a new version of the bill.
