Valid question. All good to see the verdicts but will they be implemented or some strange appeal procedure kick in?

Do you think we will See Sharifs in Adiala any time soon? or is this some charade?

Yes,I believe they will spend at least some time in jail.Or maybe that's just my naivety speaking.

I don't think in jail , but maybe house arrest for a few days in their palace or luxury hotel suite that they will gain some political mileage from, and in the mean time some deal 'behind the scenes' will pave way for an NRO or exile to a save haven - maybe to their close friends in Qatar this time.

This is on the assumption that PTI will not win elections by a majority to form a government.

If PML-N/PPP/MMA coalition govt. comes into power then in the name of 'national interest' (more like their own interest) they will provide a relief package to Nawaz, be that through legislative changes, presidential pardon, appointing 'home' umpires in positions of authority - whatever it takes.

Some channels reported Capt Safdar was arrested earlier today.

If the manner in which the convicted Sharifs are running around without being arrested is an indicator, option 4 looks like it!

I highly doubt it.

They'll appeal, do a runner, appeal, pay someone off and then disappear.

With the drama Capt (RETIRED) Safdar is doing before his arrest, wonder if the authorities have the stomach to handle his master when he arrives on Friday?

If the other two chor come to Pakistan; they will be arrested from the airport I think. The authorities may even have a plan and they may be arrested in Lahore and put on a flight to Islamabad to cut the nuisance of the few patwaris that may turn up to cause trouble.

Well anywhere they go, they will be followed by their supporters - this issue wont die.

All my relatives have been debating this and they highly doubt these choor will actually go behind bars. If PTI win they may not even return to Pakistan again.

They should be transported to prison in an unmarked vehicle/s after bought to Islamabad. It's actually simple to stop nuisance.

Nope not at all. This is all such a waste of time. It seems like this stuff is all that the Pakistani government, courts and institutions can do. How many years and potential have been wasted because of this never ending political drama?

They will do jail time if they come back to Pakistan. People need to be positive! Who would have thought that their chori would get caught?!?!? Pakistan is on the way up in shallah :)

I think they will spend some time in jail before the international forces come for a rescue once again as they have served a lot of people.

I doubt local establishment will accommodate international establishment this time though.

15 PML-N workers in hot water for rally in support of Captain (retd) Safdar

A case has been registered against 15 people for holding a rally in support of Captain (retd) Safdar in Rawalpindi and preventing the NAB team from arresting him.

Among the 15 named in the FIR are a National Assembly candidate and provincial assembly candidate from the PML-N.

Clowns protecting this thief. I hope nab takes real good care of these crooks when they decide to come back.

Captain (retd) Safdar already getting special treatment in jail, apparently got B class jailcell so has an AC, TV and a Fridge... how nice.

LAHORE: Amid reports that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz, who were convicted in the Avenfield Apartments reference, will be arrested upon arrival in Lahore, authorities say that Mr Sharif will be sent to a jail in the ‘Better Class’ category by virtue of being a former parliamentarian, but Maryam can avail the facility only if she proves that she has paid at least Rs600,000 as annual income tax.

They would have to submit an application requesting a Better Class jail, as it won’t automatically apply to them. Furthermore, the jails would not be furnished with an air-conditioner or a refrigerator.

“This is what the family can get under the law,” said a senior official of the home department on Tuesday. “Capt Safdar (retired), Mr Sharif’s son-in-law, can also get a Better Class jail after submitting an application. He had not applied for it in writing by Tuesday evening and was therefore not given a jail in that category,” an official source said.

Officials said the colonial-era categories of A, B or C class jails in the Punjab do not apply anymore. The classification was changed to Better Class and Ordinary Class through an amendment to the Punjab Jails Rules on a direction of the Lahore High Court some years ago.

Maryam to be eligible if she has paid Rs600,000 annual income tax

Under the rules, Mr Sharif can get a Better Class jail if he submits an application requesting it. However, the rules do not provide additional privilege to any former or serving president, prime minister or chief minister.

Since Maryam Nawaz is neither a former nor serving gazetted military or civil officer, like her husband, or a sitting or former parliamentarian, like her father, she can claim Better Class only if she proves, with documents, that she has paid at least an annual income tax of Rs600,000.

The Better Class jails have limited facilities. Those availing the option are entitled to books and newspapers, a 21-inch television, a table and a chair, a mattress, personal bedding and clothing and food. The prisoners have to pay for all this themselves. The government is only obligated to provide them security in a high-security ward where they will be kept away from other prisoners.

Officials said according to the legal procedure, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) will have to produce Mr Sharif and Maryam before the accountability judge who had convicted them. The judge will then give the NAB a warrant of contract, which would carry details of the punishment given to them and directions to the jail superintendent to take them into custody.

Officials said it is the judge who decides which prison the convicts will be kept in initially. But Mr Sharif and his daughter are likely to be confined to Adiala Jail, because it has a secluded high-security ward.

Mr Safdar is eligible for a Better Class jail on three counts, being a former gazetted army officer, a former gazetted civil servant (he was inducted into the Civil Service of Pakistan and was given the rank of assistant commissioner before retired Gen Musharraf removed the Nawaz government in 1999), and a former parliamentarian (he was an MNA in the previous National Assembly).

“The government cannot give them facilities not mentioned in the Prisons Rule. But it would have to ensure adequate security wherever the Sharif family members are kept... They are nevertheless high profile prisoners,” said an official.

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi on Tuesday denounced the arrests of around 250 party workers in relation to a case against a rally led by Captain (retd) Safdar Awan in Rawalpindi.

PML-N workers were arrested after a case was registered against party supremo's son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar along with 15 others for violating the Punjab Regulation and Control of Loudspeakers and Sound Amplifiers Ordinance 1965 on Monday.

Rawalpindi Mayor Sardar Naseem's close aid Gul Faraz Jadoon wasamong the arrested party workers.

"The police has arrested around 250 PML-N leaders. I am ready to be arrested too... I am not one who will flee," Abbasi said.

"But make an announcement if Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has been set up to win the election from Rawalpindi," he added.

PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif also condemned the arrests of party workers. "Arrests like these are condemnable efforts to drive the party into a narrow alley," he said.

The former Punjab chief minister further said the arrests raised questions over the transparency of the upcoming polls.

Shehbaz requested the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to immediately take notice of the issue.

37 PML-N workers sent on judicial remand
On Tuesday, 37 PML-N workers were presented before a civil court. Civil Judge Muzna Chauhdry sent the workers to jail on judicial remand.

City Police will shift the PML-N workers to Adiala Jail tomorrow.

Senator Mushahid Hussain writes to Punjab CM
In a letter to interim Punjab chief minister Dr Hasan Askari, PML-N Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed stated that false cases have been lodged against over 200 party workers, candidates and senators.

"The arrests will create unrest in the country's political environment," Senator Hussain wrote, adding that these actions are in line with giving a free-hand to PML-N's political opponents.

The PML-N leader further stated that the arrests of election-hopefuls and senators was a direct violation of the code of conduct issued by the ECP for the upcoming polls.

"Your government is liable to comply with the election code of conduct," Senator Hussain wrote in the letter to the Punjab caretaker chief minister.

In the letter, Hussain also discussed party supremo Nawaz Sharif's return to Pakistan. "It is our political right to welcome Nawaz Sharif on his return to Pakistan," he wrote, adding that the party should not be denied its basic right.

The imposition of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, a law concerning the maintenance of public order, in Punjab is the violation of democratic traditions, Hussain wrote to Dr Askari. "The imposition of Section 144 under the current circumstances is a condemnable effort to affect the election atmosphere," states the letter.

Senator Hussain, through his letter, requested Chief Minister Askari to take back all of the aforesaid actions taken by the government, including the imposition of Section 144.

Captain (retd) Safdar's arrest

Captain (retd) Safdar, who was absconding after the Avenfield Properties corruption reference verdict, had arrived at a PML-N rally at Liaquat Road on Friday. He then disembarked from a vehicle and joined supporters amid cheers.

PML-N leaders Senator Chaudhry Tanveer and Malik Shakeel Awan, among others, brought Safdar into their fold and delayed the latter's arrest as a NAB team made efforts to take custody of the convict. Captain (retd) Safdar delivered a speech,as the NAB team attempted to arrest him.

According to the case, registered in the Waris Khan Police Station by SHO Muhammad Arham, PML-N leaders and workers are accused of violating the code of conduct prescribed by ECP for the upcoming polls along with the Amplifiers Ordinance.

NAB finally arrests Safdar after he appears at PML-N rally in Rawalpindi

Among those accused are two PML-N candidates contesting the General Election 2018 for seats in the provincial assembly, while one of the accused leaders is contesting the polls from a National Assembly constituency. PML-N leaders Chaudhry Tanveer, Daniyal Chaudhry, Raja Haneef, Sheikh Arsalan, and Ziaullah Shah have been named in the petition along with hundreds of unknown persons.

The case has been registered under Sections 149, 147, 188, 341, and 3/7 of the Amplifier Act.

A sessions court in Lahore on Wednesday approved Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar’s bail application in a hate speech case.

The court was hearing Pakistan Mulsim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader’s plea seeking a bail in the hate speech case filed against him. The court also asked Safdar to submit a surety bond of Rs200,000.

Lahore police had arrested former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s son-in-law near the Ravi Toll plaza and registered a case against him in Lahore’s Islampura police station last week.

The case was registered under section 16 of the MPO and additional charges were also added after the he was presented before the court.
