I will be turning 18 in some time and I want to buy a used manual car, probably a cultus or a swift,as soon as I get my license. My family owns a couple of cars, both automatic and I am trying to persuade them to sell off one of the cars, which isn't in use much and sits in the garage all day. This will give us the cash to buy a smaller car.

Most of my friends drive automatics, but I prefer to drive a manual, even though it's less convenient for most Karachi roads. What type of car do you drive/prefer?

I drive Manual that too with Hydraulic steering, its a pain in traffic situations although Swift is smooth and good enough.
Pressing the clutch multiple times is annoying if its evening traffic.

A friend of mine is in North America and he got a manual saying its easier during snowing season to steer through not sure if its truth.

Personally i would prefer auto over manual if in a city not sure why u r tilted towards manual.

Haha i guess I just like shifting gears. My family and friends say I'm mad too, because of this reason.

Arham_PakFan Automatic cars are great because you don't have to change gar all the time and nor does it start falling back on hills HOWEVER, considering we live in Pakistan, I would never suggest you to buy an automatic car NEW. Now, sure, we have some great roads in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore but we all have to go to the outskirts every now and then and automatic cars aren't made for such roads. Because of such frequent shift in gear, the wear and tear within the engine is much higher and therefore, automatic cars have a shorter life.

Thanks for the advice bro.The cars my family own are quite old now,the newer one was bought in 2008,and now after every few days we have to go to the mechanic, because of one problem or the other. So I know what you mean about automatics having a shorter lifespan.

Exactly. I would suggest you to get something new if you want to avoid going to the mechanic all the time. Some reasonable options are Alto or some Japanese imported car.

Automatic, any day of the week. Nothing annoys me more than people who stick to their "back in the day" baggage which is exactly what stick shifts are. Only downside is that its very hard to find a decent mechanic for automatic cars in Islamabad.

wrong example

many people find stick shifts to be more efficient and providing better control.

this is why still many 'race cars' are stick shift

Driving in Pakistan, fuel efficiency is more of a concern than squeezing every ounce of power from the machine and autos are hands down more fuel efficient than sticks.

There are good mechanics but they're too expensive.

I have alto and tbh i m not a big fan but defn easy maintainence although the driving is terrible compared to most Suzuki,Hyundai,Honda,Ford hatchback cars.

That I agree with but fuel costs drop compared to a Honda or Hyundai. Its only 600 something CC. Also, considering he's only 18, most parents wont buy him something tooooo expensive to buy and maintain.

There's literally so many reconditioned Japanese cars in the market that I can't even name them. They are also a good-ish option. Personally, a Honda Civic would be my favorite car to drive in Pak.

Automatic any day, specially on Indian roads. Also, for the kind of cars we have, I don't buy this "joy of driving" BS. What joy do people get in their 70bhp dabbas with substandard gearbox?

After a hard-day of work and stuck on traffic that is moving inch by inch I know what transmission I would prefer. I get that manual makes you feel like a "race-car driver" but the downside is that you are stuck changing between first and second gear on most days.

I've driven my fair share of manual and now completely in the automatic camp.

Honda civic is defn classic even Honda Amaze is wonderful compared to most Suzuki ones. Although Suzuki has relaunched their 'elite' ones herr such as baleno (lol) .

Ford and Renault have also finally adapted to Indian roads with Renault kwid similar to Alto but cheaper in price and well done interiors sadly much higher maintenance.

Among hatchback (small) though in terms of drive in India its handsdown Volkswagen Polo Gt,t he best ever sadly leg space is crap.

Learn manuel. But drive automatic.

Manuel driving is a skill. And you should know that skill.

Automatic is easy and you one free hand and could drive and park easily.

Especially in the roads of pakista automatic is best.

In a western country, auto for sure. My personal experience of autos :

Mercedes - good
BMW - great
Lexus SUV only - shifts like a granny until you put in sports mode

Unfortunately,I learned Auto first,at 13 years of age.I started manual a couple of years later and I really struggled in the first few years.I agree, automatics are far easier to handle.

I got a manual car as a gift in my marriage. I can only drive automatic, so I ask others to drive it for me. Hate manual driving. I just want to go from point A to B, don't want to tax my brain to coordinate with clutch gear brake and gas.

Prefer automatic but the mileage is very less for them.

Now i have a manual car and my leg aches in traffic because of the frequent pressing of clutch..

As sloggy bhai said, automatic doesn't feel like driving :)) so I prefer manual, however automatic could be the wise choice given the traffic situation in Pakistan and the nature of roads there

I prefer automatics for the weekdays and stick shifts aka manuals for the weekends. The vast majority of cars here are automatic and driving a manual is an uncommon skill, so knowing how to drive a manual gives you more respect.

Automatic. It is rare to even find a manual in the US, and even if they were available, I can't be bothered, because I'm only concerned about getting from Point A to Point B. I've never been a car aficionado to care about anything other than comfort and reliability. The less complications, the better.

Naah bruh if you live here then gotta drive to point C and D too cause of the huge distances, but I see your point.

Haha what? Most people that I know here in Pakistan drive manual cars, and in my age group it's seen as a sign of being 'sissy,if you drive an automatic. Most people here drive manuals from what I've seen but automatics are becoming more popular.

Automatic.

Who wants to bother with a manual while driving to work on a Monday morning? :murali

I live in Islamabad and there are we have 2 autos and 1 manual, the one that's mine is manual. Auto cars are fuel efficient all across the globe but since Pakistan car literally use the gear boxes designed in 90s so the fuel efficiency is bad, I mean really bad, so since yours truly is a ghareeb person so I went with a manual and the fuel efficiency has been a real life saver. If I have to go towards pindi side then I never take the Manual car beacause I might kill myself after driving it in congested traffic.

If you city is not clogged with traffic and your not planning to buy newer model japanesse car then go for the manual version.

I would like to give you some advice, swift is a good car so if you are buying that it's fine but please for God's sake dont but the feces of a car usually known as cultus. If you are on a budget then buy a baleno in very good condition but please no cultus.

City Auto 1.3 on 1000 rs petrol does 130km with AC when driven with a very light foot
Baleno Manual 1.3 on 1000rs does 175km with AC when driven with a light foot

Driving the city auto is much better experience though but poor people dont care about that. :wahab2

I drive both but I prefer the automatic.Don't care what my friends say.For the streets and roads of Karachi, the better option is an automatic. In 15 years, manual cars will be extinct anyways.

this is true, a stick shift lets you control the revs and if you need you can always go slowly in a higher gear to prevent wheel spin (which gets you stuck in the snow)

Ah ,assumed that would be it as well, thanks.

I drove manuals for decades. Never again. Driving a manual in UK traffic is stressful and tiring. I love my Merc, it nearly drives itself, though I like to override the automatic gearbox to get more engine braking and save diesel.

Rn I'm limited because my parents sure as heck won't buy me a bigger car,and we're also limited by budget,so I'm looking for a used, smaller car until I get out of Uni or get a job.I prefer manual, but I live in Khi which has a LOT of traffic. So i guess I'll just drive auto's for the time being.

Hows the Vitz?Model 2012 and 2013?

For Karachi Auto is perfect, manual is good if your general route is long and traffic free.

Vitz is a good car but 12-13 model is an expensive car, 12-13 models are upwards of 13 lacs. The biggest objection I have with Toyota cars is that they are thief favorite cars. Toyota corollas are stolen mercilessly and the situation isn't very good for other models too, the same case applies to most Suzuki car and since you live in Karachi you should be really careful about what you buy, don't want to end up buying a car that is always in the sights of thieves.

IMHO you are better off buying an Imported auto Japanese car. The newer models even in some smaller cars come with CVT transmission which is more fuel efficient than Manuals as compared to Pakistani ATFs. Idk about vitz, it may have CVT. The overall build quality is also much better and these cars usually dont let you go to the mechanic since they rarely come up with faults. The other Auto in our house is a bigger japanese car which costed us less than Honda city and is in every way much much better than the local city.

Whatever you do, just dont buy a new toyota, honda or a suzuki car from Pakistan, these 3 companies are looters and price they charge is just unbelievable.

I guess I'll look into some of those japanese cars before making any decison, but I'm defo not buying any new car esp from the bigger companies. You're right,Toyota(even Hondas) are stolen a lot.

Thanks a lot bro, you've been really helpful.

Automatic is the only feasible option in Pakistani traffic. After driving a manual for years, I felt like my life changed once I 'upgraded' to an automatic.

Manual

auto doesnt feel like driving

Lols, when you have been driving for nearly 20 years and you are stuck in the rushtraffic every day after work and you have so many other commitmetns then you look at driving as a nessecity only.
Allthough I have a manual car, I might switch on to an automatic now.

Germans: Automatic. (DCT's followed by SMG's)
Japanese: Automatic.
Americans: Manual. (They just can't make Autos right on coupes)

To each his own but I really don't see a reason for someone to be driving a manual living in a metropolis, especially if you have to go thru rush hour traffic, grinding gears all day long isn't fun no matter how big of a motoring enthusiast you are.

I drive manual.....Tried Automatic a few times, not my cup of tea.....

Give me a manual car and I'll take you places you've never been before :shezzy

I have never tried auto but manual is not that hard I feel! Would love to try auto in future !!

Its not about how hard it is,its about struggling in the traffic during peak hours,if you lived in crowded cities you would know.
Although for Jammu and such areas Manual is good.

I love driving manual. When I'm driving automatic, I constantly find my hand on the stick and looking for the clutch :))

I agree. Whenever I visit Pindi, I opt to go for an Automatic despite being a bigger fan of manual cars because of the better acceleration that you get.

I have a Land Cruiser 1990 which is an absolute pain to drive in traffic because of the steering and clutch in traffic.

Vitz 2012-13 is great but it is expensive still. You can get a good new car for that price!

As far as Toyota's getting stolen is concerned, let me assure you, from what I know, that problem no longer exists. They've installed a new system called 'immobilizer' and from what I understand, you can only start the car with one particular key and there's some software or something which prevents it from getting stolen. GLI and upwards models have this function. Arham_PakFan

Yeah by the time the world has shifting to driveless car our cars are getting immobilizers. There are work around for immobilizer too but obviously those will take longer than usual but I don't think the thieves will give up toyotas just because of that. Pak wheels has posted many videos where the thief starts the car within 20 seconds of sitting in the driving seat so atleast the immobilizer will be an improvement over that. I'm still not in the favor of investing 2 million in a vehicle that's always minutes away from getting stolen.

You still have gear control in an automatic cars but people rarely use it.

So, you're telling me that Corollas can still get stolen despite the immobilizer? Gosh. That doesn't sound too good. This has just made me anxious because I recently just booked one. My hands are already sweating. :))) Since you know your fair bit about cars, any tips on how to avoid getting your car stolen? Any safety measures you can take?

Hahaha, yeah they can, it's not even 5% as easy it is without an immobolizer but considering the demand of Corollas it still makes them a very attractive option, plus corollas are also stolen at gun point. My khalu recently bought a grande and that car is more of a curse than anything else since it costs 2.5 mil+ and he's always worried about it getting stolen. IMO insurance is the best option for anyone getting a corolla, the aftermarket options are good too but they usually work for normal cars by increasing the theft time but since you know the mehran and corolla situation in Pakistan, so the thieves are absolutely not worried about spending a little time stealing these car. Never ever get the trackers, it's the biggest BS scheme in Pakistan.

I recently found out about a new way of security from friend who owns corolla, he has an old nokia phone with a sim in the trunk of the car so in case the car ever gets stolen atleast he'll know where it is and it isn't something the thieves will ever expect. But for this approach you need a lot of influence with the police to get your car recovered.

There another lock too that you can get from rescue 15, it works but going around the brake and accelerator and then you lock it. This lock is totally dependent on the quality of the lock (Talla) you get. Getting this lock on and off is a big hassle but it's good option if your car stays parked from prolonged periods of time.

We belong from Kashmir and on hilly areas corollas are favorite so we have had some corollas but these cars have always been a headache than anything else. There were attempts of theft on our cars and out of fear we finally got rid of them and got other cars instead.

Automatic. It is rare to even find a manual in the US, and even if they were available, I can't be bothered, because I'm only concerned about getting from Point A to Point B. I've never been a car aficionado to care about anything other than comfort and reliability. The less complications, the better.

This.

People do boost alot about manuel, but its nothing special. You dont find comfort in that.

In an automatic you could eat and drive, text and drive and what not

Hahah, Gosh man! This is the first time we're ever purchasing a Corolla and I never had any idea that they would be THIS much of a pain. Thanks a lot for all the advice. That should be really helpful. I'm mostly going to have to drive within Islamabad with the odd trip to Lahore and Pindi so I guess it shouldn't be too much of a problem. But one thing goes without saying, driving at night should be ruled out then.

And yeah, will definitely get insurance. Thanks again!

The only time I would prefer a manual over an automatic is if I would be going for a long drive and where the sole focus is the drive. For any other things where I am going for work and I am in the city I would always prefer an automatic. With the amount of traffic driving a manual is just a pain and in this time and age unneccessary. Ofcourse I enjoy the thrust which comes from a shift but it is not something one can enjoy for their daily driving needs.

Why the hell are you using your phone while driving?

Around where I live there is a 500-1000 dollar fine for being on the phone while driving.

I always wanted to go to the coral reef of the coast of Australia, I'm sure your manual car can go down there. Unfortunately I have an auto so can't go. Please le ja yaar.. bhai nahi hai? :afridi

Once drove a Suzuki Celerio AMT. It was the my worst experience driving a car.
Never drove a CVT so can't say. Technically its better than AMT's.
What I believe is, if you are an enthusiastic driver or driving is your passion and you can't afford expensive cars then you should buy manual. If you have money go for BMW, Merc, Audi type Automatic cars.
And if your only purpose of driving a car is to go from A to B, and you dont care about driving experience then go for Automatic.

I used to shave whilst driving too, but then I made the mistake of leaving the can of shaving gel in the car on a hot day, and it exploded. Cleaning the mess up was quite a chore.

And then there was the time I got toothpaste in my eye when I braked abruptly. That's a story for another day.

We always get Manual because my wife is a huge driving enthusiast / slight control freak and likes to operate the gears herself.

To me though, driving is more of a functional task, that I am neither enthusiastic nor unenthusiastic about. I like things to be as easy and undemanding as possible. So I would love to try an Automatic.

She wants an SUV next, so I am going to try and subtly influence her into picking one that comes in Automatic only.

I am a big fan of manual, drove manual for almost 10 years (16 to 26) and loved it. Only moved to automatic once I moved out of Pakistan because manual cars here are rare and its difficult to get license for a manual car. Once you start driving automatic, it is very difficult to go back to manual purely because of the inconvenience of shifting the stick all the time. Though my current car has both automatic and manual (with paddle shifters).
