Do you think Alex Carey is the right choice as wicketkeeper-batter for the Ashes?

Alex Carey has been picked and has got the backing of Adam Gilchrist. He has been in line for a test debut. Do you think he is the right man for the Ashes ?

Do you think Matthew Wade could have considered ?

Would like to hear the opinions.

He is good. I think Australia is trying to move on from Wade in test cricket. He has been given plenty of chances.

I also like Josh Philippe but Carey is probably the best bet at the moment.

Wade is close to retiring. You would want someone young to take over from Paine and not someone who's as old as Paine himself. It was always between Carey and Philippe.

He is worth trying, his glove work is pretty good. batting will improve with more experience

I would have picked Inglis - a quality British export.

Nah Inglis was the main contender for Carey and should have been selected for me, a better player with the age (26 vs 30) being an added bonus

I'd definitely have chosen Josh Inglis, liked what I have seen of him for Western Australia.

Carey has had a fairly scratchy shield season thus far, averaging in the mid-twenties if memory serves. The fact he's fallen away sharply in international white ball cricket over the past couple of years doesn't bode well either.

Should have been Inglis.

Best of luck to Carey though.

I think he is the right choice because he is young and should be given a go. Also, he has been playing white ball cricket for a while.

It was a memorable game for the wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey. An Ashes Test debut at the Gabba and then emerging as the first wicket-keeper in men's Test history to take eight or more catches in the same. The left-handed batsman achieved the feat on the morning of Day 4 after he took the catch to dismiss England's Chris Woakes off the bowling of Cameron Green as the visitors were bowled out for 297 runs in the second innings.

Carey broke Rishabh Pant's record, who had taken seven catches on his Test debut in 2018 against England. Carey also left behind the likes of England's Chris Read and Australia's Brian Taber, who also had seven catches each to their names in their first Test match.

South Africa keeper Quinton de Kock took nine catches in his first game as a wicket-keeper, however, he had already played one Test where he didn't keep wickets. Carey after achieving the feat also opened the batting with Marcus Harris in David Warner's absence, who didn't take the field after coping a blow on the chest.

Australia needed just 20 runs to win following an exceptional first hour with the ball as off-spinner Nathan Lyon bamboozled England's middle-order. The visitors lost eight wickets for 74 runs and even though they were able to overhaul Australia's first-innings lead, a double-digit score was never going to be enough.

Lyon too reached his milestone of 400 wickets, ending a long wait. Lyon became only the 17th bowler to achieve the feat in Test matches and only the third Australian after Shane Warner and Glenn McGrath. With this victory, Australia have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The second game will start on December 16, a pink ball Test at the Adelaide Oval, which will be played under the lights.

Taking eight catches on debut, a feat unmatched in Test cricket, Australian wicket-keeper Alex Carey has been lauded by his teammates.

Thrust into the team in the wake of Tim Paine’s indefinite break from cricket, Carey made a seamless transition into the Test team, blooded by international experience through the game’s white-ball formats.

"I guess playing a little bit of white-ball cricket for Australia helps that. Once the bowler is running in, I focus on the ball and that is the same with the bat. Obviously your first Test you've got a bit going through your mind.

"It didn't take me too long I guess to get into the rhythm. Probably a few overs and then we're playing cricket again. It was great fun."

Presented his Baggy Green cap by legend gloveman Adam Gilchrist, Carey looked the part as Australian Test player No. 461, also conceding just four byes across the two English innings.

While acquainted with much of Australia’s bowling attack, Carey showed keeping class supporting Nathan Lyon, in spite of the the pair playing little international cricket together.

"I think it's been an absolutely incredible debut," Lyon said.

“I've watched him train in the lead-up and his preparation has been world-class.

"He's coming down on the early bus with me to catch in the nets. To debut at the Gabba in an Ashes series, take eight catches, (we’re) pretty proud of him."

Pat Cummins, in his first Test as captain, continued with the praise.

"(I) thought he was tremendous.

"(I’m) not surprised, he's played a lot of international cricket and we knew he'd slot straight in and be high quality.

On top of his record haul in the field, Carey showed a willingness to take on the new ball, opening the batting in Australia's small chase in the injury absence of David Warner, who remains a doubt for Adelaide with bruising to the ribs.

"I felt confident to go out there and do the job. Unfortunately, I nicked one but we won the Test match. I'm pretty happy. I'll play any role for this team."

"Why disrupt number three, four and five?”

Carey travels to Adelaide to play in front of a home crowd for the day-night Ashes Test, with Australia looking to keep up their perfect start to the 2023 World Test Championship.

"I'm really excited to now head to Adelaide.

"We all know what the pink-ball Test means. It's a really good atmosphere in Adelaide. But growing up watching games there and to have my family there is going to be very exciting. And obviously, winning this Test puts us in a good place to hopefully start really well on Thursday."

Solid and important 50 when his team was 220 for 5.

The Aussies could have been 300 all out, but now due to Carey and Khawaja they could get a lead against England.

He will be good outside Asia.

He was very scared to play a real stroke in India. Just kept reverse sweeping and getting out.

The Aussies always have these wk/batters who have the ability to score important runs.

Carey has plenty of grit and fight as a batsmen and did his job today. The game is honours even due to him helping out uzzy at other end

Gone Carey for 66 - Did he overplay his hand a bit?

He looks very shaky against spin. Seems to try to manufacture shots than trust his defence.
