How many of you miss the concept of sending a tail enders at the top of the order to whack like crazy, to get the team out of a pinch.

With modern cricket that idea has become totally obsolete. but it was pure fun to see the likes of Srinath, coming out at 1 down to just trying to blind slog every ball. :narine

yes why not. I wish sarfraz send anwar ali as an opener or one down. he might change the game in one or two overs.

We do send a tailender in the middle order to whack a few and then get out, we call him Umar Akmal.

Its become the norm so you dont need it anymore. Pakistan is the only major cricketing nations that (now) dont have players who can easily clear the fence.

Its actually a sad indictment on Pak cricket that Sohail Khan can hit 6 better than pretty much anyone in our top order and further its a complete repudiation of the approach we have had since 2010.

I know all that, but I miss the novelty and the excitement when a team would send a tailender to just go nuts.
And it was beyond entertaining when that actually worked. A dull affair would suddenly becoming intense. No bowling liked to be tonked by a tailender.

still happens in tests, i remember Praveen Kumar trolling england and smashing 6s few years back

Nowadays most batsmen outside of the subcontinent are Pinch hitters,so why send tail enders when they don't have good technique and can get out on new swinging ball, thus they will also put scoreboard pressure on the pure batsmen and could effect the team negatively.

It was a poor tactic that did nothing to help the team on most occasions. When the SRs have gone up, there is no need for a pinch-hitter.

The last time I remember it being used was when AB de Villiers sent Robin Pieterson out to hit a few during an inportant KO match. South Africa lost.

Actually the trend was started by South Africa in the the 90s (as early as they were allowed to play international cricket). But they were kind of proper batsmen/alrounders who were pretty decent with bat (Pat Symcox, Nicky Boje, Klusener, Pollock) The idea was to make it look (to the opposition) a lengthened batting lineup and plan the innings accordingly, with controlled aggression and not necessarily pinch hitting for some overs.

However it is definitely Jayasuriya/Kaluvitharana who astonished this what we call pinch-hitting (for players who are supposed to be pure batsmen!) I think the concept of pinch-hitters (who are basically tailenders with some slogging skills) came into existence even before Jayasuriya/Kaluvitharana! But I can also remember somebody like Kris Srikanth who used to do something similar to Jayasuriya in first 15 overs in 80s itself!

But definitely the trend has changed now! We expect the openers themselves to do this role (with support of No.3 and even No.4) in addition to building innings! Their job is made easier with batting-friendly conditions and rules!

You can relate this scenario somewhat to our current Indian movies as well! In the past, we were seeing specialized girls for cabaret dance/songs and heroines were kept decent! But now the heroines themselves do all the roles :))

Because they choked and had a run out, not because of the pinch hitting strategy. Peterson was on fire, he scored about 70 at a run a ball, didn't look like India were going to get him out until a brilliant bit of fielding by Jadeja.

The trend was started by New Zealand in the 1992 World Cup. Mark greatbatch

Misbah did the opposite in Asia Cup match vs Ban. He sent in Abdur Rehman for two overs before Afridi came and finished the game.

Wasn't there a game where he got a duck as well? That's the one I'm talking about.

Don't need pinch hitters anymore.

In the modern game, the proper batsmen do the same job as a pinch hitter, except they go on to make big scores and huge team totals.

330 is considered a norm now.

I think Imran used qadir up the order also.

Mark greatbatch was also promoted as opener for the same purpose.

The idea is obsolete because now every player knows how to hit big and at any moment they can hit. But still it can be implemented in Pakistan but we really miss the right player like of Shahid afridi or Abdul Razzaq. Need to find out those kind of players who can at least finish the match in style on their day.

Every single batsman in England and Australia top and middle order can hit big sixes, pinch hitters are not needed anymore.

I miss tail enders like Afridi opening for Pakistan. Even It is always a case of hit or miss with his type.

Forget about pinch hitting, I miss the concept of hitting in Misbah's era, that looks like an alien concept to mature and senior players of Pakistan
