What's new

Does Azhar Ali have better batting technique than Asad Shafiq in Tests?

We actually have some decent batters coming through. Not sure on young bowlers apart from Hasan Ali.

We'll have to invest in Hassan the same way we have in Azar and Shafiq, only way we can develop a test quality pace bowling A/R. Fast bowling is not strong but spin bowling is okay, Asghar can develop into a Test quality spinner, there's Zafar Gohar to and the A/R Nawaz. Not sure what's the deal with Raza Hassan but he could still make a return if he works hard and improves his fitness

We have more than enough spinning options. Worries about the fast bowling. May need to turn to some domestic bowlers between 24-30.

Ehsan Adil needs to be kept around! young and quiet talented, reckon he'd be useful on away tours and his height in particular would be useful in Australia. He has potential and we need to invest in him now before it's too late, don't want another sohail khan situation where we select him when he's 32 years old. In recent times we've seen too much inconsistency in selection, guys get a few games then dropped irrespective of performance. But with Inzi the cheif hopefully that will change

Ehsan has potential. Problem is in his action he is falling away. If he can straighten that out he will generate more pace and bounce and accuracy. Also if he could out some muscle on it will help.

Name of some bowlers apart from Hasan Ali?

Spinners : Zafar Gohar (I like him more than Asghar), Usama Mir (More talented than Yasir), Asghar,

Pacers : Amir, Hassan, Amad, Majid, Rahat, Ehsan, Mir Hamza, Zia. The first 4 are very good in ODIs while the others are more suited to Test cricket only.

All rounders : Amad, Yamin, Gohar (his batting is underrated)

Totally agree, he should be able to sort those out with the right advice. Some sessions with Waqar would greatly help him, he's also young and got age on his side to

Yep Mir Hamza and Zia are good prospects to, forgot them in the moment

Zia and Mir should be in some squads. Zafar in LO formats. Usama should be tested in t20s at least he has a lot of potential Arthur was raving about him

Would mention Sadaff but he's not even on the selectors radar so...:)) reckon he will look to settle in England

By ODIs I meant all formats

The new bowlers we selected at the world cup such as Rahat and Sohail seemed to listen to Waqar. Think Ehsan should definitely talk to Waqar.

I thought they bowled well generally at the WC, Waqar is clearly a terrific bowling coach and I think it was last year or the year before where Australia short listed him for a role as their bowling coach to. Wish we could hire him as a bowling coach some how but it will be a bit awkward now as they sacked him as the head coach.

Pcb is stupid. They should have had him with work in the pcb or with younger bowlers/player at NCA. He could work with the bowlers are trying to implement proper fitness programs for all levels.

Exactly, ECB did just that with Andy Flower! instead they let Waqar go in disgrace and burned bridges with him but that's what they do lol

Waqar was also instrumental in Amir's rapid development in 2010. Our pacers bowled really well under him, really missing him on this tour.

Agree with you, unlikely Waqar will return now.....alternatives include Akram and Ian Pont both which the PCB are not high on for some weird reason

Waqar would make a fantastic bowling coach (for the pace bowlers , never understood why there isnt a pace bowling coach and a spin bowling coach) but NOT head coach!

I put the last dismissal down to a lapse in concentration. Shafiq has always had a problem focusing, he needs to learn how to focus like Azhar.

In most cases Asad gets behind and blocks deliveries like that one.

Ive said it before, Azhar is much better technically against pacers than Shafiq although Shafiq has improved from his early days. Its all good making 100s/50s when you come in, in the 20th,30th, 50th over but batting 3 ball in, 3 over in is a different ball game.

Nope, as usual his head went too far outside the line gauging for the ball.

He shouldn't be taking guard at leg stump. Too short and not good enough offside square of the wicket like Tendulkar was.

Azhar did that in previous games too, it happens even to the best of players. The fact that he normally gets behind those ones tell me it was a concentration lapse.

Overall, he looked off focus throughout his innings.

This isn't something new. It's happened numerous times and will continue to happen.

I said Asad was better than Azhar, maybe I was too hasty. Lets see after these overseas tours.

6 years wasted on these two and they look nowhere near close to taking over from Younis or Misbah.

This is the reason why you never, ever trust batsmen with averages in the 30's at domestic level.

Three batsmen averaged around 50 in that time frame - Fawad, Haris and Akmal, but yet none of them were invested in.

First one is never selected and when he is, it is on difficult away tours or is made to open.

Second one hasn't even made his Test debut yet, which is a huge travesty and a great injustice - now the poor guy is injured.

Third one was ousted around the age of 20, after doing well overseas and got only 1 innings in the sub-continent.

Technique is not everything, Asad's may be a bit more versatile/sound given how Azhar did not sought to be a batsman initially but his mental strength, grit, desire and hunger for runs outweigh everything else to the point where he has established himself as the best batsman on the planet. Azhar is the Younis Khan to Asad's Moyo in terms of the distinction between their batting styles and how one is a lot more successful then the other who is pleasing on the eye.

Azhar Ali has improved miles over the past 2 years.Shafiq hasn't exaxtly regressed but I hoped that the hundred in Australia would have changed him.Unfortunately he couldn't succeed in the rest of the series.

Shafiq so far has been one hundred every series and keep quiet until he scores a hundred in the next series...He is like the new MYK of the past.. MYK scored consistently since the AUS series in UAE'14, even though he was struggling and kept quiet in england, NZL and AUS he still managed to score a match winning 200 and 175*... Also shafiq needs to keep his concentration level up and push his score past 130s and try to get a double ton... Grit and determination has been the difference between Azhar and Asad...

If Shafiq's performance doesn't pick up this year the way Azhar's has over the last two years, he will have to go. After Younis and Misbah, there will be no place for him to hide in the lineup. Unfortunately, he is best mates with the next captain and is in the good books of the PCB establishment, so he is here to stay.

Azhar gets to Bat in top 3, Shafiq bats with the tail that doesn't do much. You cannot compare the two in the current role. As far as the batting goes, Shafiq is on a different level compared to others.

I have supported shafiq alot// but if shafiq doesnt improve this year.. he might have to leave// in tests we have quite a few replacements available.

You are right, I don't think he will ever be dropped.

However if he continues to play like he is doing, he will remain at the number 6 position instead of moving up the order and becoming our pillar/main batsman like he was destined to do.

Having said that, while he wont have reached his potential, he is still a good number 6 for us and can continue to bat there.
