Pakistan's World Test Championship draw is a matter of fact.
They play Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South Africa at "home", and risk dropping points to the first two who have superior pace attacks and batsmen against spin. (Let's face it: Pakistan lost their last UAE series against not just Sri Lanka but even New Zealand!)
They also play away to Australia, New Zealand and England. Three series where Pakistan's fortunes depend upon their pace attack.
The most skilful pace bowler, Mohammad Amir, claims to have retired from Test cricket.
So does the fastest bowler, Wahab Riaz.
And so Pakistan has a sudden and urgent problem. The team flies to Australia in nine weeks' time.
Australia. Where inexperienced Asian bowlers invariably bowl too short and do badly. Even Waqar Younis did on his first tour there in 1989-90.
As a minimum you need 3 specialist quicks and a fast-medium all-rounder in Australia. In the starting eleven. Plus 2 more quicks in the squad.
And none of them can be as short as Hasan Ali.
Misbah is now all-powerful, but Waseem Khan has made clear that he will also be held more accountable for results than any of his predecessors.
So what is going to happen?
Shaheen Shah Afridi clearly is the key bowler.
But Mohammad Abbas failed in identical conditions in South Africa. Hasan Ali is far too short for Brisbane in particular.
It seems as if already Misbah needs to call in a favour, and ask Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz to make themselves available for those 3 tours outside Asia.
Otherwise it's looking very possible that Pakistan might finish the World Test Championship with fewer than 100 points out of a possible 720, in rock bottom position.
