Does the PSL need to be innovative to stand out from existing leagues?

So now Pakistan is now finally launching its T20 league. This is coming after couple of failure attempts previously.

PSL is getting launched at a time when most of the countries already have a successful and ongoing T20 leagues. India has IPL, Aust has Big Bash, BCB is re starting the BPL, there are Natwest T20 Blast and CPL as well. So the concept of PSL is not a new innovation but just an additional number amongst many leagues.

The problem PCB has which other boards don't is that they cannot play at home. To run a successful league, you need foreign players and home support. But because of international cricketers reluctance to play in Pakistan, they have to shift their base in Qatar. Losing home crowd support is a massive disadvantage. In other words PCB cannot out shine other leagues using the same concept but without playing at home. That is given in a real world.

Now the question is how to make PSL innovative? How to do something unique that gives cricket fans across the globe a brand new concept. Something like IPL did in 2008 - Only 4 foreign players per team, cheerleaders, carbon kaamal catch, fair play awards, the concept of eliminator etc. If PSL simply adopt these and few concepts from other leagues its like Meh. We have seen all these before.

Here is my thought (probably stupid one) how can PSL be unique. We know there are master T20 league about to start where retired veterans from various teams will participate. How about merging the concept of masters league in PSL?

Each team can have 4 foreign players, 6 Pakistani players and 1 master. So say there are 5 teams in PSL - each team must have a master player like Wasim Akram, Brian Lara, Adam Gilchrist, Rahul Dravid and Shoaib Akhtar etc. Ofcourse it depends on the fitness of the players but I am sure they can survive 20 overs game. If its a long tournament, hire 2 masters per team and keep rotating.

Now that is called innovation and imagine the hype it will bring. Wasim Akram bowling to Kumar Sangakkara, Adam Gilchrist facing Amir will be great concept. Yes these masters may not be the same players but they will surely garner massive interest.

Just an idea.

not a very practıcal ıdea . PSL ısnt just about money ıts also about exposure for young pakıstanı players and ınvolvıng master player wıll ruın the competıtıon

It is unprofessional. PSL will be the official T20 competition of Pakistan, not an exhibition league for these geezers to compete.

If this happens, we will be the laughing stock of the cricketing world, which we are anyway but still.

Thanks mods for changing the title.

Mamoon - Why adopting this concept will make the league a laughing stock? If anything this will give a new concept which is not followed by any leagues before. I have just given Wasim, Lara as example and agreed they retired long time ago. You can probably hire some recently retired cricketers like Ponting, Dravid, Akhtar etc. They can compete as fine as any young players and will bring more brand value.

Tamasha leagues are always open for experimentations, so i won't mind this idea honestly.

At this point I'd be happy if we can see it going on.

I won't believe it's gonna happen till the first ball is delivered

We are copying IPL, not the ICL.

All they need to do is keep the teams to a minimum so that the best talent is put to display.

Keep the tournament short so that all matches are taken seriously. Not like 16 matches per team in IPL.

The broadcast should use all the modern technological innovations, hire good commies, involve the crowd, bring in Pakistani celebrities to interact with the crowd etc etc

Well whatever it is it defn doesn't need any 'innovative' advice from the Indians!! :P

I am very pleasantly surprised at the traction for this. and I do wish for it to succeed.
My only concern is about filling the stadium.

If you have money, you can invite players and have tournament like BPL, SPL etc but important is 'sustainability' . Business model. you can carry on with it and earn profit.

I don't think the masters will like to participate in a professional league. They are done with it.

Often for players, even after retirement, they still have a bit of professional cricket left in them which they can contribute in professional T20 leagues. Leagues like BBL, BPL, CPL etc help to expand their professional cricket career.

I mean for example recently retired cricketer like Sangakkara you can't call him a 'master' yet because he has still bit of a 'professional cricket' left in him. I believe he's contracted to play BBL for next two seasons.

But you can call Shane Warne a 'master' now as he's done with playing in T20 leagues too, now 45. But I believe he is unlikely to sign up for professional league. But we will be able to see him and legends like Tendulkar, Wasim, Lara etc in non professional T20 leagues, exhibition, fund raising, fun matches etc.

But I do get your point. You can introduce a legend icon player in that regard, not necessary though.

You're open to signing players but you need to choose wisely. You'll be able to get someone like Jacques Kallis, Kumar Sangakkara who still play professional cricket but you won't be able to attract someone like Shoaib Akhtar, Shane Warne etc unless they come out of their T20 retirement.

Let's see how this pans out.

What innovations can we expect?

Watching GEO SUPER and according to Waled khan. There are about 7 investors (International and local) who're interested to purchase the franchises (5 franchises in total).

The best way for the PSL to stand out from other leagues is for it not to be corrupt.

what a post! Completely agree

The TAPAL tea timeout is not a good innovation!
