Dominic Sibley, who has been named in England's 15-member squad for the two-match Test series against New Zealand, reflects on his fruitful home season.

Sibley was one of the four England players to earn a maiden Test call-ups alongside fellow opening batsman Zak Crawley and bowling all-rounders Saqib Mahmood and Matt Parkinson. The right-hander has been in a scintillating form of late, leading the run-scoring charts at the County Championship with 1,324 runs at an average of 69.68 thus far.

Sibley, who carried his bat with an unbeaten 215 and followed it up with a match-winning 109 in the fourth innings against Nottinghamshire last week is pleased with his current form. "It's been a good year for myself and to get that call is really pleasing," the Warwickshire cricketer told Sky Sports. "I am buzzing to be involved."

The 24-year-old further talked about the slight adjustments he made to his stance from the last season and added that batting for long periods is his specialty.

"Last year I was standing really narrow for a tall lad and was a bit side on, now I have opened up and got a bit wider on my feet," he said. "Also mentally - moving away and growing up as a person as well has made a big difference so a combination of the two. Batting for long periods of time is what I have done well this year but, to be fair, it's something I have done since a young age and hopefully I can continue to do it."

Sibley had scored a double hundred for Surrey in only his third first-class match at the age of 18 in September 2013. Four years later, he joined Warwickshire as apart of a contentious swap with batting all-rounder Rikki Clarke. The youngster said that watching the first Ashes Test live at his home ground last month, aroused eagerness for the bigger stage.

"I came [to Edgbaston] on day five [of the first Ashes Test]," he said. "To feel the atmosphere and see the way cricket got so big over the summer during the World Cup and Ashes, makes you even more hungry to be part of it."

Sibley could be the answer to England's opening woes, as the team hasn't got off to good starts in the longest format in recent times. He looks forward to play alongside Rory Burns among a few others, who was England's second highest run-scorer in the Ashes series this year.

"I have played a lot of cricket with Burnsy [Rory Burns] growing up. He has had a really good summer again against the Aussies. So to be on tour with a few old friends from Surrey - Sam Curran as well - should be good fun."

Good to see these new players come into the side - wish him all the best.

Half century at a tough time for England v West Indies - should get a hundred to establish himself in the side.

He has been quite impressive. Great start to his career.

Not the most eye-pleasing technique but he gets the job done.

Haven’t seen much of him, but he kinda reminds me of a right handed Keaton Jennings.

I like his ability to concentrate. He’s a real old-fashioned test opener in that regard, like Boycott. His stickability will really help the team and take pressure off Root.

Horrible technique but it seems to be working as he averages north of 40 after eight tests, all against pretty good bowling.

Not the quickest but a 100 nevertheless!

Excellent stuff from Sibley.

Excellent innings and one that has set the scene for an England win

He plays quite ugly but gets the job done. You'd always think that his wicket is round the corner but he somehow survives a nervous call every now and then

Straight out of the Geoff Boycott school of batting. England badly needed an opener who could blunt the new ball and hold an end up.

He is going to be a quality test match player.

I think where Sibley may be targeted especially by Australia in the next Ashes are balls at his ribs and hip. WI haven't tested him enough there in this Test.

I'm also interested to see how he'll fare in India against quality spin as he seems to get bogged down.

But he's exactly what England's been missing.

To be honest no player is perfect. I think he is capable getting a big score in India and Australia when he has had more experience in tests.

I think Crawley potential is much higher.

He probably didn't survive long enough vs New Zealand in his debut series otherwise I think someone like Wagner would cause serious problems for him.

Sibley getting criticized for batting slow in conditions not suitable for stroke making is the most armchair cricket expert thing I have seen. It is almost as if so many people pretend to be test cricket fans to appear intellectual but have nothing going on up there.

Same thing with Shan people saying hes batting to slowly

England opener Dom Sibley says he should have scored five Test centuries and is "greedy" for "more big runs" in the final two Tests against Pakistan.

The 24-year-old averages 39.50 and has scored two hundreds in 10 Tests since making his debut in November 2019.

"If you said after 10 Test matches you'd be averaging 40 and two Test hundreds, I'd be pleased," Sibley said.

"But at the same time I do feel that I've got a lot more to give. I've only shown myself to a certain level."

The second Test of the three-match series, which England lead 1-0, starts on Thursday at the Ageas Bowl.

As well as centuries in South Africa and against West Indies, Sibley has two fifties, but he has also fallen between 34 and 44 five times.

"I've let opportunities slip to score four or five hundreds," he said. "That might sound unrealistic, but that's the way I think.

"I'm starting to feel more comfortable every time I go out to bat. There are some amazing bowlers out there, but I'll always back myself."

Since Sibley was called up for the New Zealand tour last winter, England have passed 400 in the first innings four times, something they had failed to do in their 22 preceding Tests.

He has helped fill the hole left by the retirement of England's all-time leading run-scorer Alastair Cook in 2018.

Opening partner Rory Burns averages 34 from 19 Tests, the most successful of the batsmen called up at the top of the order since Andrew Strauss retired in 2012.

Asked if he sees his alliance with former Surrey team-mate Burns as a long-term solution for England, Sibley said: "I'd love that to be the case. We've shown over the last few Test matches we've got some big first-innings scores.

"Burnsy would say the same as me. Knowing his character is similar to me, he'd be greedy and say he'd like a few more hundreds.

"That's something that's good for us and can drive us forward, having that competition of who scores more hundreds.

"I'm good friends with him and played with him a lot, and hopefully we can play a lot more games together for England."

Dom Sibley looks to me talented. England should persist with him in tests. A well organized young player.

He has been a sitting duck against Pakistan. Both Sibley and Burns have failed badly.

Burns is a good player. It’s only been one Test match in the series. Any player can have a poor Test.

And unfair on Sibley too. He was one half of the second-biggest partnership (with Joe Root) in the successful England run chase. The way the ball was biting and spitting on Day 5, scoring a 30-odd in this context was quite a good performance.

I'm particularly intrigued by this Sibley character. He looks so determined about the way he's playing spin, I'd love to see him fall apart as the series progresses.

His hands and arms move so much like Alastair Cook - but I think he's gonna soon fall into Ashwin's lap as the series moves on :rabada2

If not Ashwin, Axar's lap will do. Thank you. :rabada2

Its not been a good series for both the Dom's. Sibley appeared to start well in 1stTest-1st Innings and since then has lost confidence. Probably overwhelmed by the massive odds when playing India @home.

I was worried about Sibley's lack of release shots against spin last summer and unfortunately that's been exposed in India against quality spinners.

He's a good blocker for seaming/swinging conditions, but on flat or turning pitches you need an opener to do more than just blunt the ball.

He certainly shouldn't be dropped though, England have cycled through enough openers in last 6-7 years.

After much thought and consideration, Warwickshire batter Dom Sibley has made the decision not to tour Australia with the England Lions.

Sibley has decided to spend the winter working on his batting at home in a bid to regain England selection.

Yorkshire batsman Harry Brook has been added to the Lions squad.

The touring party will depart on the 4 November along with the Test specialists selected in the Ashes squad.

The Lions will be in camp alongside the England Ashes squad and will play two intra-squad matches (1 x 3-day and 1 x 4-day matches) in Queensland. They will also take on Australia A in a four-day match. Dates and venues are still to be confirmed. The party will return home on 16 December.

Feels like yesterday’s man, but he is actually still very young. I wonder if there is a way back for him in Tests.
