England Men take on South Africa in three ODIs and three IT20s

England Men have named the squads for the upcoming white-ball series against South Africa.

England will contest three Metro Bank One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Vitality IT20s against South Africa. The ODI series begins on Tuesday 2 September at Headingley.

England Men Selector, Luke Wright, said: “Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage.

“Sonny is a player we have identified for a while and he was impressive during the England Lions tours last winter. He has carried that form into this season in white-ball cricket with Hampshire and Manchester Originals and deservedly gets his opportunity.”

Having clinched the ODI series against Australia, South Africa have announced their white-ball cast for the upcoming tour of England.
South Africa have announced their squads for the ODI and T20I series against England starting early September.

The squad that has featured in the ongoing white-ball series against Australia has been strengthened by some major returns.

Swashbuckling batter David Miller is making a return to the T20I setup for the first time since the home series against Pakistan last year.

Miller’s previous outing for South Africa across formats came in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, when he scored a valiant century in the semi-final loss against New Zealand.

South Africa squads

ODI squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Toni de Zorzi, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj, Lhuan-Dre Pretorius, Matthew Breetzke, Kwena Maphaka, Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis, Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Nandre Burger, Wiaan Mulder, Tristan Stubbs, Senuran Muthusamy.

T20I squad: Aiden Markram (c), Keshav Maharaj, Lhuan-Dre Pretorius, Corbin Bosch, Kwena Maphaka, Kagiso Rabada, Dewald Brevis, David Miller, Ryan Rickelton, Donovan Ferreira, Senuran Muthusamy, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Lizaad Williams.

Also making a return to the T20I setup is all-rounder Marco Jansen, who missed out on the T20I series against Australia.

Meanwhile, Kagiso Rabada, who was ruled out of the ongoing ODI series Down Under owing to an ankle injury, has been named in both the ODI and T20I squads for England.

The Proteas will play three ODIs and as many T20Is against England, starting 2 September.

The T20I series presents a valuable stage for preparation en route to next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

England Men have named their XI for the first Metro Bank ODI against South Africa, which takes place on Tuesday at Headingley.
Hampshire seamer Sonny Baker is set to make his international debut.

Jofra Archer returns to ODI cricket for the first time since the Champions Trophy match against South Africa in Karachi back in March.

All the hype that Sonny baker got in 100 is being put under test. Markram has really laid into him. Forgettable debut so far. First ball duck. Then some serious punishment at the hands of Markram
 
Markram is a gorgeous player to watch when in full flow. One of those guys easy on the eye compared to the hacksaw cutting English team bar Root to some extent.
 
Bavuma is so underrated as captain. While everyone felt it was a dumb decision to chase, he studied pitch far more brilliantly. SA 47/0 ATM

I think SA would have won the match either way. It doesn't really matter against current England. On paper England is a very good side. But they have been doing poorly for a while.
 
Definitely Sam Curran deserves a chance ahead of this "generational talent lol" Bethell. He is a street smart cricketer.
 
Watchign some good cover drives in England after Test series agianst India where Gill, Rahul, Karun, Jaiswal, Sundar unleashed gorgeous cover drives.

Mostly lower ranked sides. So it will give us a contest on third grade UAE pitches infront of poor atmosphere. Asia cup has been a boring spectacle for more than a decade. Don't expect this to be different given how poor sides are.
 
The phrase ' Blow hot and cold' aptly describes England

If they play badly, it is often a dismal batting collapse resulting in a heavy loss

WHen did they win a ODI game in recent times. There is a reason why they are ranked 8 in ODIs.

Their main players don't even play list A cricket. The 100 is at the same time as the List A tournament.

T20 (or 100) and 50 overs have some similarities but their distinctions mean that not all t20 skills can carry over. Players need to learn to bat for a bit longer. Be more patient and bowlers need to know when to attack and defend.

If you treat it just like a extended T20 you will often implode.

Those who say ODI is an extended T20 do not understand cricket. :inti

ODI requires different skill sets.

They didn't exactly play "T20" cricket there. They were getting out edging to slip including Root. SA bowlers extracted movement. Besides Morgan's team was even more aggressive than these guys in the one dayers. SA was just too good for them.
 
England were bundled out for just 131 and thrashed by seven wickets in the first one-day international at Headingley as South Africa handed out a bruising reality check to the hosts' new era of white-ball cricket under captain Harry Brook.

In an abject performance, England reached 82-2 only to be dismissed in 24.3 overs in their first white-ball matches since Brook began his tenure by sweeping aside West Indies at the start of the summer.

The collapse started when the captain was run out for 12 and opener Jamie Smith, the only batter to make more than 15, followed for a 48-ball 54.

Jacob Bethell's tough summer continued, Will Jacks, one of five players who were playing in the Hundred final less than 48 hours ago, chipped back a catch and Jos Buttler struggled for 15 from 24 balls.

The last seven wickets fell for 29 runs in 7.1 overs as spinner Keshav Maharaj took 4-22 on a pitch that did not turn and seamer Wiaan Mulder 3-33.

Fast bowler Sonny Baker was then hit for 76 runs, including 14 boundaries, in a brutal, seven-over introduction to international cricket - the most expensive figures by an England bowler on ODI debut.

In the second over, Jofra Archer nicked off Ryan Rickelton only for the ball to be judged to have bounced before first slip and still would have had the left-hander lbw had England reviewed an lbw shout. Their failure to do so summed up their day.

Aiden Markram flogged 86 in 55 balls with England failing to make a breakthrough until he was spectacularly caught by Smith with the winning line only 11 runs away.

The crowd cheered ironically when Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs followed with the scores level but Rickelton ended 31 not out and the Proteas won with a massive 29.1 overs to spare.

The three-match series continues at Lord's on Thursday.

Regardless of this match, The fact is England do not play list A cricket, so they will suffer in this format, as they have done for the last few years as upcoming talent does not know what 50 overs is.
