Stokes was England's best bowler in tests vs India. He will be handy on green surfaces.
Yeah but Stokes bowling is a bit of a double-edged sword for England. On one hand, you know he will add value with the ball because he has a knack for picking up crucial wickets and delivering big spells. On the other hand, it could lead to injury which would be a massive blow for England. In a five-match test series he will have to be very careful with his bowling workload, because it has lead to injuries multiple times in the recent past

The visitors have announced their 12-member squad for the Ashes opener against Australia in Perth, starting 21 November.

England speedster Mark Wood has been declared fit and is named in the 12-member squad announced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for the first match against Australia.

Wood bowled eight overs in the warm-up match against the England Lions and went off the field for precautionary scans after feeling stiffness in his left hamstring.

He did not take the field again in the warm-up game but was eventually cleared fit and is now in the running for the playing XI for the series opener.

With the Optus Stadium expected to assist fast bowling, England have gone with a pace-heavy attack in Jofra Archer, Wood, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse and the added option of the fit-again captain Ben Stokes.

Shoaib Bashir is the lone spinner in the bowling attack, though England can rely on the part-time spin of Joe Root should they choose to go with an all-pace battery.

There were no surprises in the batting line-up named in the 12-member squad, with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley expected to open, followed by the reliable middle order featuring Ollie Pope, Root, Harry Brook, Stokes and wicket-keeper Jamie Smith.

They had Mark Wood bowling in a special pressurised and climatised tent in Lougborough in preparation for the Ashes. I hope he doesn't get injured.

Seeing Wood and Archer charging in will really make this series. They should unleash them in the first match to try and go 1-0 up against a weaker Aussie side.

Can’t believe there’s no thread on it.

England have prepared well. The practice series vs India went well, good player and approach experimentation.

I expect them to be well prepared. Just hope Mark Wood is fit. England need to forget the Aussie reputation and just play. Vs their abilities. The Aussie batting seems brittle to me, but we’ll see.

Frenzy erupts over detail on Australian Test kit for Ashes series

A frenzy has erupted over the new-look kit Australian players are sporting during the first Ashes Test in Perth.

For the first time in a Test series, the traditional Aussie white shirt has been plastered over with a large Westpac logo.

Cricket fans were unable to overlook the bright red emblem as Steve Smith led his troops out into the middle of Perth Stadium.

It is far from the first time the traditional Aussie whites have had Cricket Australia’s major corporate sponsor spread across players’ torsos and the investment from sponsors is critical for the sport.

However, that hasn’t stopped some viewers expressing their dislike of the new look kit.

Many have lamented the gradual changes made to Test cricket shirts worn all over the world with numbers, sponsors players names now also a regular feature.

One cricket viewer posted on X: “Early prediction: The English batsmen are gonna complain that the giant red Westpac logo on the Australian bowlers shirts, is too distracting. And they won’t be able to see the ball”.

Another posted: “The big red Westpac W really ruins the @CricketAus whites kit. Still not a fan of the numbers & names either”.

Aussie cricket legend Damien Martyn has previously publicly criticised the concept of major sponsors featuring on the prestigious white shirt.

“When has the Test team started to put sponsors logo large on the front? Terrible look in Test cricket. Just my old school opinion though”, Martyn wrote on X in 2023.

Westpac replaced Toyota as the main shirt sponsor for Cricket Australia, following on from Alinta Energy and Toyota.

In July this year, it was announced that Westpac had taken over as Cricket Australia’s principal partner for the men’s and women’s national teams.

Fans got their first glimpse of the new look kit in the white ball series against India, but the Westpac logo was impossible to miss on the cricket whites as the Ashes got underway in Perth.

For many years, a smaller sponsor had appeared on the upper right chest area, but in recent years the front Test cricket playing kit has become prime real estate for advertising.

Westpac CEO Anthony Miller said at the time of the announcement: “We’re excited to step up to the crease and back Australian cricket.

“As the first sponsor to feature simultaneously on both the men’s and women’s team shirts here at home, we look forward to investing in Australian cricket across all forms of the game, beginning with next month’s games against South Africa, followed by both India teams and this summer’s highly anticipated Ashes series.

CA CEO Todd Greenberg said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Westpac as Cricket Australia’s new Principal Partner.”

“This partnership represents a shared commitment to making a positive impact on the field and in the community. We aim to elevate the experience of fans and participants and together grow the game.

“Westpac’s support will directly contribute to initiatives that elevate participation and visibility in our sport and help support our vision of making cricket a sport for all. We couldn’t be more excited about the impact we can achieve together.”

The bank is also a key partner for the NRL, with the large “Red W” featuring on the front of both the NSW and Queensland State of Origin jerseys.

On the eve of the Ashes, Origin Energy also announced a three-year partnership with Cricket Australia that will see the energy retailer’s logo feature on the sleeves of the national men’s and women’s cricket teams.

England’s cricket team is sponsored by Toyota, sportswear manufacturer Castore and Tyrrell’s Wine.

It’s a different look to the the previously pristine plain whites of Test cricket seen in the 20th century.

In 2019, the International Cricket Council introduced player surnames and numbers on the back of shirts in Test cricket as part of a wider plan to promote the sport.

Wood marks England’s task ahead of the second Ashes Test

Speedster Mark Wood believes England can pose a strong challenge in the upcoming day-night encounter in Brisbane.

In the Ashes opener at Perth, England’s pacers helped them take early advantage before Travis Head’s remarkable blitz handed them an eight-wicket defeat.

England pacer Mark Wood, who hit high speeds during the Perth Test, reckons the tourists will need to pick themselves up before their next contest.

“Can we take them into the other four games? This is not one, it's one of five. We've been hit pretty hard in round one, but we've got other rounds to try and throw some back.”

Among the positives were England’s pace bowling performance in the first innings, and Wood had high praise for his compatriots.

“I definitely feel we've got 20 wickets, certainly. The team has been designed to take 20 wickets in these conditions, [Brydon] Carse bowled beautifully this game, ran in all the time.

“He made things happen, he was constantly at people. Gus [Atkinson] didn't get any wickets but he nibbled it around and beat the bat a lot. Jofra [Archer], I thought we saw the best of him, especially that opening spell.

“As a group we can take a lot of confidence from that game.”

With the next encounter, all set to be a day-night outing, Wood was hopeful England’s tactics will keep them in contention.

“Being a day-night Test, we know around night time it can zip around. If it can zip around at pace that can make it doubly difficult [to bat].”

The second Ashes Test will begin from 4 December, with crucial ICC World Test Championship points also on the line.

I have a feeling England may end up losing 0-5.

England generally do poorly in Australia.

Last time England won a Test in Australia was back in 2011.

Stuart Broad's advice to England on how to stop Travis Head

Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad wants to see the tourists use some different tactics when bowling to Travis Head for the remainder of the Ashes.

England great Stuart Broad has revealed what his former side should do to try and keep Australia batter Travis Head quiet during the remainder of the Ashes series.

Head proved the difference between the sides during the opening Test in Perth as he smashed a match-winning century in the fourth innings that helped the Aussies open up a 1-0 series lead in the five-game ICC World Test Championship series.

The left-hander was promoted to open the batting alongside debutant Jake Weatherald as regular opener Usman Khawaja battled back spasms and the move paid dividends as he scored a superb 123 to guide the home side to victory.

All of England's fast bowlers were on Head's hitlist, but Broad believe the visitors' four-pronged pace attack - that included speedsters Jofra Archer and Mark Wood - were too impatient and has implored them to try different tactics when bowling to the hard-hitting batter throughout the remainder of the Ashes.

Broad, who sits fifth overall on the list for most wickets in Test history with 604 scalps, wants England's pacers to attempt to frustrate Head and try and get him to do something different to what he is accustomed to.

“What they could have done when Travis Head was really going, then you have to use your awareness to say, ‘Let’s get him off strike, let’s let him to face one ball an over and it’s a clip off his hip and he gets one and you don’t let him face four, five balls an over and he hits a boundary in those’”, Broad told Australian radio station SEN.

“And crucially, when you get him off strike, Marnus Labuschagne comes down to the facing end, you bowl dots at him and create pressure on him.

“Suddenly, you do that for forty minutes, and Travis Head gets bored of getting a single and tries something outrageous and might get out.

“That’s what England could have done a bit better. Yes, we like to see this aggressive play, and it’s always looking at the positive option.

“But sometimes, the positive option is to take the bite out of what’s going on just to try and make Travis Head do something different.

“You can’t just let him keep flaying it for hours on end and ends up with 120-odd off 80-odd balls.

“I think England could have done that a bit differently.”

Broad expects England to use the time off prior to the second test in Brisbane that commence on December 4 to formulate new plans for Australia's batters, with the pressure on skipper Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum to try and find a way to get the tourists back into the series.

“It’s the first time that I’ve seen Ben Stokes not have a tactical answer on the pitch,” Broad said of Head's impressive innings in Perth.

“And that means full credit to what he (Travis Head) was able to do.

“When I reflect on what England could have done, it came as a shock.

“They’ve designed their mindset to Travis Head coming in at No.5. He opens the batting because Usman Khawaja has a back spasm.

“So, the plan is already gone. You’ve now got a new ball. ‘Okay, what’s the plan to Travis Head with a brand new ball? We’ve not even discussed this leading into this series’, so you’re a little bit scrambled.”

Packed crowds and huge viewing audiences saw Australia retain the Ashes by taking an unassailable 3-0 series lead in the NRMA Insurance Christmas Test at Adelaide Oval.

After regaining the Ashes in 2017-18, Australia has now retained them in five subsequent series. This will mean they will have held the urn for more than nine years when the next series is played in England in 2027.

The total attendance of 223,638 was the biggest ever for an Adelaide Oval Test beating the previous record of 199,147 in 2017-18. It was also the largest Test match attendance ever in Australia outside of a Test held at the MCG.

The Day 1 crowd of 56,298 was the highest for any single day of cricket in Adelaide.

Audiences across Kayo Sports, Foxtel, Seven and 7plus Sport were at their greatest as Australia closed in on victory on Day 5, with an interim average audience of 2.11m watching the action.

The final session of Day 5 was the sixth session of the series to average more than two million viewers and the eleventh session of Test cricket to average more than two million viewers in 2025.

Cricket Australia's digital channels continue to see extraordinary engagement, with 1.34 million people from within Australia visiting cricket.com.au and the Cricket Australia Live app across the Adelaide Test. Those users contributed 11.6 million sessions, up 25% on the third Test of last year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Fans flocked to cricket.com.au and the Cricket Australia Live app for rich video content, with views from Australian users up 151% compared with last year's third Test against India.

The vast global reach of the series was also evident with 232 million video views across Cricket Australia’s social media channels during the Test match.

Todd Greenberg, Cricket Australia CEO said:

“To retain the Ashes in just eleven days is an amazing accomplishment and testament to the superb preparation and performance of the players, coaches and selectors and the efforts of all those across Australian Cricket supporting the team.

“As always, the atmosphere at for the NRMA Insurance Adelaide Test was brilliant with the record crowds providing a fitting stage for the Ashes retention and this was reflected in the huge viewing audiences.

“We’re particularly delighted with amazing support of the South Australian Government who have embraced the Christmas Test theme and added a new dimension to what was already a bucket list fixture on the global cricket calendar.

Cummins , Starc [ both to be rested ] & Lyon [ out of series ] will not be playing in Melbourne . Perhaps ENG can win a Test finally !

Cummins ruled out of Ashes as 'freak' Starc soldiers on

Jhye Richardson among the quicks vying for a Boxing Day berth after Aussies put their captain on ice

Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the rest of the Ashes series but coach Andrew McDonald insists Mitchell Starc, who Australia's medical staff have labelled a physical "freak", will be right for the Boxing Day Test.

The Aussies are now weighing up whether Cummins will be considered for February's T20 World Cup after shutting down their Test captain for the home summer having sewn up the Ashes in Adelaide last week.

Scott Boland is on trick to overcome a hip niggle to play his home Melbourne Test while the hosts are also confident Starc will be okay to play despite that pair having bowled the most overs in this series.

Cummins pushed the limits of his rehabilitation from a back stress injury to return in Adelaide. After taking six wickets and captaining Australia to a series victory, Australia are now putting the 32-year-old on ice.

"He won't play any part in the rest of the series," McDonald told reporters on Tuesday.

"That was a discussion that we had a long time out around his return. Yeah, we were taking on some risk. We've now won the series, and that was the goal.

"To position him for further risk and jeopardise him long term is not something that we want to do.

"Pat's really comfortable with that. If he had any setback in the build-in as well, we would have shut him down straight away.

"Everything went really smoothly, and full credit to him, the medical team and to navigate through that risk profile, to get him back and take six wickets in that game and nail the Ashes series was incredibly pleasing for everyone associated with that."

McDonald could not contain his awe for Starc, whose has sent down close to 100 overs for the series so far but remains in good shape heading into his fourth consecutive Test.

The 35-year-old left-armer, known for playing through pain, continued hit speeds in around the mid-140kph mark well into day five of the Adelaide Test.

He cracked open England's fourth-innings chase with a stunning ball to dismiss Ben Stokes and looks set to front up again in Melbourne.

'I want more': Starc adamant 'job's not done'

"Starc's amazing," said McDonald. He's pulled up fine.

"I don't know how he does it. I walked into the physio room the other day and went through the body count and how we're going and (physiotherapist Nick Jones) just said, 'He's a freak'.

"He's pulled up well, he keeps running in and presenting the pace that he does. There's a lot to be learned around preparing yourself and targeting the right matches at the right time.

"He's given up a lot of IPL opportunities and you're seeing a player that wants to play Test cricket, and he's still at his best. It's an incredible story, and let's hope it continues for a long time yet.

"But he's a freak – end of story."

New zealanders are absolutey despondent that England was unable to give it to Aussies. Their mantra is "Anybody but Aussies". They last won in Hobart in 2011 or so. Ever since NZ was never invited to play on Hobart.

Not based on ball tracking, but here's how both teams have bowled in this Ashes

image.jpg (2).png

It's clear that you need to bowl a high percentage of deliveries on a good length and in the channel outside off.

Australia have plugged away all day long in that channel and maybe pulled it a bit shorter to keep the batsmen honest

Here's a look at how the bowlers have bowled individually

image.jpg (1).png

Starc has that left arm angle so it doesn't matter as much for him but the English seamers have been very poor.

Now let's look at bowlers who have bowled the highest percentage of deliveries in that channel on a good length in the last 4 years

image.jpg.png

Matthew Potts is clearly a cut above the rest when it comes to accuracy.

And yet, Baz and McCullum have deliberately left him out because he is not fast enough for them .

Someone has done god's work. Cricket has immense opportunity for stats like this. Cricinfo is still archaic when it comes to exploring more relevant statistics.

Australia will not play a spinner in the Boxing Day Test on a Melbourne pitch stand-in captain Steve Smith described as "quite furry, quite green".

Murphy ready for England to attack in Sydney Test

Australia spinner Todd Muphy is prepared to be a target for England in the final Ashes Test in Sydney.

Off-spinner Murphy, 25, could play at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) after Nathan Lyon was ruled out of the series with a hamstring injury.

Murphy played two matches in the 2023 Ashes and came in for some particularly tough treatment in the third Test at Headingley, but still ended up with seven wickets in the series at a better average and strike-rate than the rest of the Australia team.

"I'd say it's a guarantee that if I play they will be attacking against me," said Murphy. "That's how they've been playing, it's been positive cricket. It will be no different if I'm playing and bowling.

"You always have a chance when guys are coming after you - it does bring you into the game a little bit more. If that presents out there, no issues."

Meanwhile, Australia batter Usman Khawaja will speak to the media on Friday morning (21:15 GMT, Thursday) amid speculation he will announce his retirement.

The left-hander turned 39 last month and has faced a battle for his place in this Ashes series. He was was left out of the second and third Test, only to be reprieved in Adelaide when Steve Smith fell ill.

Khawaja was retained for the fourth Test and, after Sydney, Australia do not play another Test until August.

The SCG traditionally assists slow bowlers - three of the four leading Test wicket-takers there are Australia spinners Shane Warne, Stuart MacGill and Lyon.

But Murphy's inclusion on Sunday (23:30 GMT on Saturday) is not guaranteed because of a mixed weather forecast and the limited impact spin has had in this Ashes series.

Only nine wickets have fallen to spin in four games, meaning this series is on course to have the fewest wickets taken by spinners in an Ashes series of at least four Tests, beating the 21 of England's 3-1 victory in Australia in 2010-11. This series will also comfortably have the fewest combined overs of spin bowled in an Ashes series.

Murphy has taken 22 wickets in his seven Tests, though is yet to play at home.

"I still think there's a role to play for spin," said Murphy. "You're not going to be thrown the ball and your role is to take wickets, it might be to play a holding role so the fast bowlers can have a break and then come back."
