Joe root playing odi? I thought he would have learnt in 2025?

Bowling attack has no real threat or control. Not consistently anyway.

And only 3 batters who are somewhat good at ODI cricket currently - Buttler, Brook and Duckett

Bethel is decent as well

Salt will be very strong on Pakistan pitches

Livingstone has been very good recently too.

Surprised to see Root there.

Anyway, I don't think England are favorites this time.

They aren't, depending on pitches afg can get rid of em.

If flat tracks are prepared or seaming pitches it'll be Brooks or bust. But even then I doubt it. Aus or sa will get rid of em.

England will have good preparation ahead of CT. 5 match series against India will be a solid preparation.

They may not win the trophy even on flat pitches. Many of their old stars are now retired.

Yeah but those guys are not bankers . Bethell has potential but very little experience.

England have fallen off quite a bit in this format.

This XI looks quite lightweight compared to their 2017-2022 XI.

It shows how quickly things can change in cricket.
2019 was one of the strongest 11 I've ever seen.

1) Roy
2) Bairstow
3) Root
4) Morgan
5) Stokes
6) Butler
7) Moeen
8) Rashid
9) Woakes
10) Plunkett
11) Archer

What a scary 11. Followed by the fact that Hales, James vince were the optional openers.

Indeed.

Their 2019 XI was probably their best ever ODI XI. They had everything covered.

Roy used to be gangster then.

Not just roy but Bairstow and root as well. These 2 were m9nster odi players.

Bairstow fell off after injury, Roy plummeted off a cliff and Root lost interest in odi, only playing odi for icc events.

Morgan retired and Stokes became a has-been. Even Butler is getting aged now, and they lost Alex hales.

That's when things fell off for England. Oh and archer getting injured and returning as a medicore bowler.

Only on paper, bro. They don't have the numbers in recent times to suggest they are any good in ODI's.

England as usual looking to have deep hitting XI , compromising on bowling, expecting to out bat opposition.

England have 3 matches on Pakistan roads

They are killers in these conditions especially with the bat, and their bowlers are accustomed to deal with aggressive batters from the opposition

Ben stokes missing here. looks like England has moved on from him but actually he has a hamstring injury maybe that is the reason he was not selected.

To be honest. I can't see Stokes playing white ball cricket again for England.
With this, it will enhance his Test career.

Didn't he announce his retirement? And come back only to play 23WC

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma & Jasprit Bumrah set to miss the ODI series against England.

Bumrah can test rest so no problem with him .

Why Rohit & Kohli take test if they want to Play the champion trophy ?

What have they done in bgt to get rest?

So this means after the SCG test they will directly play first game of champions trophy for india against Nz .

I hope both will not selected for champion trophy team otherwise group stage exist is confirm

Good preparation opportunity for England. Need to find a good spinning partner for Adil Rashid here.

Should have let Stokes stay retired. He left on top by winning the WC. I doubt he is coming back for the 2023 WC debacle. He has very little to contribute these days anyway. And he would want to prioritize Tests.

England's last four ODI results while batting first: L, L, L, L

I think they are in for another rollercoaster ride in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

England is looking like a pathetic team so far. I think they will be having another disastrous tournament.

Most defeats in ODIs since the start of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023

England - 15 in 22 games

Bangladesh - 15 in 21 games
Netherlands - 12 in 21 games
Sri Lanka - 12 in 30 games

England slot explosive batter in Champions Trophy squad to address Bethell injury

Tom Banton, who replaced Bethell in the ongoing ODI series in India, will also feature in the much-awaited tournament starting February 19.

England have named Tom Banton as the replacement in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 squad for Jacob Bethell, who was ruled out owing to a left hamstring injury.

Bethell, who was part of England’s squad for the ongoing ODI series against India, had scored an impressive half-century in the series opener.

Banton on the other hand, has been rewarded for his recent outings with the bat in the current International League T20 season in the UAE.

The 26-year-old has amassed 493 runs from 11 innings at an average of 54.77, which includes two centuries, and is the leading run-scorer in the competition.

Banton made his ODI debut for England back in 2020 and has scored 134 runs from six appearances.

England’s updated Champions Trophy squad:

Jos Buttler (c), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Tom Banton, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Jamie Smith, Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Saqib Mahmood, Phil Salt, Mark Wood

Ben Duckett Update

Scans on a left groin injury have confirmed that England Men’s batter Ben Duckett is fit and available for the ICC Champions Trophy.

Duckett sustained the injury while fielding during the first innings of England’s third ODI defeat to India in Ahmedabad last Wednesday.

The England squad will arrive in Pakistan on 18 February ahead of their opening match of the tournament against Australia in Lahore on Saturday, 22 February.

Hunt on for elusive Champions Trophy crown - England team preview

Having secured wins in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the past, the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy remains the only men's white-ball event that England are yet to win.

Jos Buttler’s side will walk into the tournament with an intent to right their Champions Trophy record, and to finally break through for a triumph in this tournament, having come agonisingly close under the captaincy of Michael Vaughan (runners-up, 2004) and Alastair Cook (runners-up, 2013).

After an uninspiring run in their 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup campaign, where they finished seventh, England haven’t had the best of times in ODI cricket, having lost all of their four series in the format since.

However, that can be attributed to the absence of big names in the setup from these encounters. Many of their first-choice players haven’t featured regularly in ODIs, given the intermittent nature of the format (the side has played only 13 ODIs between the Cricket World Cup and the Champions Trophy- wherein the full-time captain Jos Buttler has featured in only six).

But this time, it's all hands on deck. A full-strength England can pose a good challenge for its opponents.

With new white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum at the helm, having changed the flavour of English Test cricket after taking over in 2022, a title charge is all-too possible.

Buttler, along with Joe Root and the talented Harry Brook, will form the crux of England batting, with fiery Ben Duckett and Phil Salt available for support.

England aren’t short of pace options in Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Mark Wood and Saqib Mahmood, but focus will be on the guile of Adil Rashid, whose leg-spinners can be more than useful in Pakistan and UAE.

Squad:

Jos Buttler (c), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Tom Banton, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Jamie Smith, Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Saqib Mahmood, Phil Salt, Mark Wood

Fixtures:

v Australia, Lahore, 22 February

v Afghanistan, Lahore, 26 February

v South Africa, Karachi, 1 March

Key Player: Adil Rashid

Adil Rashid is the sole leader of England’s white-ball spin attack since all-rounder Moeen Ali retired last year. And despite being on the wrong end of his 30s, there has been no stopping the tweaker, who has been consistent with the ball across the two white-ball formats.

Given the injury blow to all-rounder Jacob Bethell, only Liam Livingstone and Joe Root remain as slow bowling support acts for Rashid, meaning that the leg-spinner will have to do the bulk of the work in the spin department.

Given the conditions, which can perhaps be more batter-friendly, Rashid can have a key role to play for his side’s fortunes, especially in the middle overs where he will be given the double duty of controlling the scoring rate while also providing key breakthroughs.

As England’s most successful ODI spinner, Rashid will be expected to bring all his experience to the fore.

England is going to enjoy pakistan conditions . flat pitch, short boundries and england tullebaaz will love this combos .

Nothing will faze him – Jos Buttler backs Jamie Smith to thrive at three

Jos Buttler has backed “incredible talent” Jamie Smith to thrive in his surprise promotion to number three in the batting order for England’s Champions Trophy clash against Australia on Saturday.

Smith has ousted Phil Salt as wicketkeeper for England’s tournament opener in Lahore and is carded at first drop, despite never having batted higher than number five in 18 international appearances.

He averages 22.16 with a high score of 49 in seven ODIs but has impressed as wicketkeeper-batter in Tests since making his debut last July to end a long-running debate about the problem position.

And Buttler has backed the 24-year-old, who has only batted once at number three for Surrey in List A cricket, to thrive in his new role in another gamble taken by head coach Brendon McCullum.

“We just feel it’s a nice position to give him a free hit to try and really impact the game in that top three,” Buttler said at his pre-match press conference.

“Jamie is an incredible talent who has taken to international cricket so well. You can place him in that position to try and have a really big impact with a number of guys behind him.

“He’s obviously got the game technically and tactically, the head on his shoulders is one of his biggest strengths. I think you could ask him to bat anywhere in the line-up and it wouldn’t faze him.”

With Salt opening the batting alongside Ben Duckett and Smith to follow, Buttler has given the trio free licence to attack the 10-over powerplay with an experienced middle order offering protection.

Yorkshire pair Joe Root and Harry Brook will be at numbers four and five respectively with Buttler back at six – where he has batted the most in a decorated ODI career – and Liam Livingstone at seven.

“That top three can be really aggressive and impose themselves and try and play a match-defining innings, with the blanket of Root, Brook and myself and Livi behind,” Buttler told the BBC

England have reinforced the batting after their struggles against spin were laid bare by India on a chastening tour where they lost seven of eight matches and were swept 3-0 in the ODI series.

However, they have just four frontline options to call upon as Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are set to play an ODI for the first time together in two years alongside fellow paceman Brydon Carse and leg-spinner Adil Rashid, with Livingstone and Root set to share fifth bowler duties.

“We back the guys we’ve picked,” Buttler added. “It’s a really exciting line-up.

“Besides the results, the environment in the group is great, the mood in the camp is really excited and the perception is one of huge optimism.

“We know we’ve got a lot of talent, we want to perform to the level we know we’re capable of, we’re working hard to do that and we know the results will come.”

Liam Livingstone hopes England can get to grips with dewy Pakistan conditions

Liam Livingstone admitted England are yet to get to grips with the fluctuating conditions in Pakistan but he is still hopeful about their Champions Trophy prospects.

England recorded the highest total in tournament history on Saturday but it was overtaken hours later by Australia, who recovered from 136 for four to chase 352 following Josh Inglis’ majestic 120 not out.

While the flat Lahore pitch slowed up towards the end of England’s innings, Australia found the evening dew helped the ball skid on, making batting easier under lights as as they claimed a five-wicket win.

Ahead of crunch ties against Afghanistan at the same venue on Wednesday and South Africa next Saturday, Livingstone is concerned about batting first again, arguing getting 30 runs over par is a bare minimum.

“Maybe even more,” he said after England’s first ODI in Pakistan since December 2005. “We knew that there was going to be dew from the training the couple of days before but we didn’t realise how much.

“Ultimately you don’t know. Some days it comes in, some days it doesn’t. We haven’t played loads of cricket here so we don’t really know. I feel 350 was enough if both innings had been in the day.

“Unfortunately, with day-night cricket, conditions usually change. I think they changed a hell of a lot towards the end of our bowling innings, which changed the course of the game.

“(Initially) the ball was going out in the outfield, it was going back dry. I remember towards the end of my first spell, I got a ball back from the outfield, it was pretty wet and I was like ‘s***’.”

England likely have to win their remaining two Group B fixtures to stand a chance of progressing to the semi-finals but Livingstone remains upbeat despite them having lost their last five ODIs.

“We know what we have to do,” he said. “If we win four games of cricket, we can win the Champions Trophy, and that’s all that really matters for us now.

“I think it’s just going to take one game where we really get going and turn things around. It’s not nice when you lose but I think take the result out of it, there was a hell of a lot of positivity.

“There’s a saying in sport: don’t get too high when you’re high, don’t get too low when you’re low. And I think that’s pretty much how we are.”

While Ben Duckett’s 165 and Joe Root’s 68 had set England up for a score approaching 400, they settled for 351 for eight as Harry Brook, Jos Buttler and Livingstone made 40 off 44 deliveries between them.

Livingstone made 14 to continue a lean run at global events, where he averages a combined 15.4 with a top score of 33 from three T20 World Cups, one 50-over equivalent and the ongoing Champions Trophy.

In mitigation, he often bats at number six or seven, when he is required to rescue an innings after a clatter of wickets or start teeing off near enough from ball one to continue his side’s momentum.

Having salvaged his 50-over career against Australia last summer and in the Caribbean in November, when he batted at number five, he has failed to reach 15 in four of his last five innings.

“I feel like whenever I’ve been higher up in the order, it’s a little bit of an easier role,” the all-rounder added. “I would love to be able to face more balls and get in rhythm, but it is what it is.

“It requires a very big skillset to be able to do it really well. And that’s a little bit frustrating for me as I felt like I’ve done a lot of things really well throughout last summer.

“I’m trying my hardest to contribute to winning games of cricket. It is a difficult role, but it’s a very rewarding role when you do come off and when you get runs in that role.”

England bowler Carse set to miss Afghanistan match

England bowler Brydon Carse is set to miss Wednesday's Champions Trophy match against Afghanistan and is a doubt for the remainder of the tournament.

Carse, 29, has been struggling with a blister on a toe on his left foot and the issue reoccurred in Saturday's defeat by Australia.

Carse had trouble with the injury and returned figures of 1-69 from seven overs.

Jamie Overton would be the most like-for-like replacement for Carse against Afghanistan, who England will likely have to beat to progress.

If Carse is ruled out of the tournament, they are able to call in a replacement but there are no travelling reserves with the squad in Pakistan.

Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed was with the squad in India. If the 20-year-old were brought in it would give England a second frontline spin option, in addition to Adil Rashid, for Saturday's match against South Africa.

England's quicks took 3-226 combined across 26.3 overs against Australia.

If England do manage to navigate a way out of Group B then they would most likely face India in Dubai, where spin has played a key role.

Carse was picked for the Champions Trophy despite missing the final two ODIs of England's tour of India because of the toe issue earlier this month.

The injury required stitches, which were removed shortly before the tournament began.

"We will have to wait and see," England batter Joe Root told the BBC in Lahore.

"There is still a good way to go until the game, to find exactly what is up with Carsey. We will see how things pan out over the next few days."

Carse has impressed for England this winter after making his Test debut against Pakistan in October.

He has a contract worth £100,000 to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League, which begins next month.

Boycott would not have positive impact - Root

Afghanistan are also winless in Group B after losing to South Africa in their opening game. Whichever side loses will likely be out of the tournament.

There has been debate around whether England should boycott the match because of the Taliban's assault on women's rights in the country.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have called for the International Cricket Council (ICC) to do more but confirmed earlier this month the match will go ahead.

Root reaffirmed their view that boycotting would not have a "positive impact".

"Clearly there's things over there that are hard to hear and read up on but cricket is such a source of joy for so many people," Root said.

"For a number of people within Afghanistan, I think it's an opportunity to celebrate - cricket gives them hope, gives them joy. Hopefully the two teams can do that in this next fixture."

Rehan Ahmed approved as replacement for Brydon Carse in England squad

The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 has approved Rehan Ahmed as a replacement for Brydon Carse in the England squad.

Ahmed, who has played six ODIs, was named as a replacement after Carse was ruled out due to an injury to the toe.

The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the player can be officially added to the squad.

The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 consists of Wasim Khan (ICC General Manager – Cricket), Sarah Edgar (ICC Senior Manager - Events), Usman Wahla (PCB Director – International Cricket Operations), Shaun Pollock (Independent Representative).

England dealt another injury scare as pacer walks off against Afghanistan

After Brydon Carse was ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy, Mark Wood was seen limping midway through his spell in England’s second game of the tournament.
Bowling his fourth over against Afghanistan, speedster Mark Wood was seen walking gingerly midway through the over in Lahore.

Shortly afterwards the England physio tended to Wood, and was seen helping the pacer stretch his left knee. Wood went on to finish his over before he left the field.

Even though the pacer returned back on the field to bowl an additional four overs, Wood was seen in discomfort later in the innings again, before he returned back to the dressing room following the 43rd over.

England have already lost Brydon Carse from their squad after he picked up an injury during the Australia game and was replaced by Rehan Ahmed in the squad.

Wood, who has battled multiple injuries throughout his career, had been ruled out for nearly a year in 2024 owing to an ankle injury.

In England’s Champions Trophy opener against Australia, Wood had snapped the all-important wicket of Steve Smith, finishing with figures of 1/75.

Bowling exposed , as expected. Batting was not exceptional either.

But even I didn't think they'll get beaten by AFG on this flat track.

Awful ODI team.

Their a pretty awful test team as well. Duckett and root are kinda masking it along with Brooks if he plays on a track where their isnt much spin assistance and only pace and swing assistance.

But it's really just 3 players that are hard carrying their test side

I can maybe see them pulling off one win in Ashes due to the fact that brooks would love aussie pitches, but even then duckett and root are useless in aus.

Epic phainti loading in Ashes, aus to likely kick eng out of wtc cycle right off the bat.

They are better in Tests. ODI's have been their worst format since 2019 World Cup.

They have only dominated Pakistan and Bangladesh in ODI's since 2019 World Cup.

Their better but as I said it's a mask. Brooks has been lucky and now sides are catching on. All of his century bashing has been done on wickets with pace assistance.

Nz was the first team to figure this out and eventually stopped curating those types of wickets. Once they curated a more spin friendly wicket Brooks failed.

Root is a goat in tests and hence he's literally 50% of the test batting side. And duckett is decent in tests.

Crawley and pope ensure England is usually 50-2 lol

Told you @Rana that this England squad is poor.

They don't have ODI players. Need to get rid of Phil Salt first.

Not to mention that awful seam attack
