Donald Trump angers Beijing with 'Chinese virus' tweet but is he right?

They eat cats, dogs, bats, monkeys to everything. I had a very hard time finding halal food, even Mcdonalds is not halal there :sachin

Nothing against the country but it is a Chinese virus. They planned it all along to wipe densely populated mother earth. In a time like this, us brothers need to be united.

Brothers Assemble :moyo :amla

I refuse to believe they just gave 3000 odd active cases.

Chinese restaurant hangs a huge banner to CELEBRATE the coronavirus epidemic in the US and Japan

Didn't want to create new thread for this. Shameful stuff, though.

Chinese restaurant hangs a huge banner to CELEBRATE the coronavirus epidemic in the US and Japan

The controversial banner said: 'Huge congratulations to the American epidemic'
'Long live the epidemic in little Japan,' the sign outside the restaurant also read

Thankfully the restaurant owner was reprimanded after the online outrage to protect China's global image.

Anti-Asian hate continues to spread online amid COVID-19 pandemic

Jing He has become used to online racist abuse.

The 26-year old from Shanghai began posting a video diary about the COVID-19 outbreak to her social media accounts in early March. Her aim was to depict life in her home city as the epidemic peaked in China.

More than 60,000 people viewed her first Facebook video on the topic, with many sharing messages of thanks and support.

But virulent, hateful abuse began to appear on later posts.

One comment under a video Jing made for the Facebook page of the China Minutes news site mocked the appearance of Asian people, referring to them as "slanty eyed b****rd's". Another detailed a conspiracy theory of how China was responsible for the virus as a means of population control.

These posts and many others, which appear to have since been removed, left Jing "hurt" and wondering whether she should ever share her content again.

"I wasn't expecting it," she said. "Racism is never okay."

COVID-19 hate
Jing is far from alone in being subjected to racist abuse around the outbreak of COVID-19.

There have been numerous reports of anti-Asian racism on the streets of Australia, India and the United Kingdom. In the United States, the reporting forum Stop AAPI Hate has recorded more than 1,100 instances of anti-Asian harassment since it was set up in late March.

On social media sites, the scale of abuse is even more apparent.

An analysis by Al Jazeera found more than 10,000 posts on Twitter that included the term "kung-flu" during March alone - although the true total was likely much higher given a number of variations of the phrase were being used across the site.

While some uses of "kung-flu" related to news reports of a White House official allegedly using the term, thousands of others sought to employ it to describe the virus or to antagonise users who were offended by its use. Other posts employing racist and offensive language such as "chop fluey" and "rice rabies" were also visible on the micro-blogging platform.

Elsewhere, there had been 110 million views of posts tagged #chinese_coronavirus on the Chinese-owned app TikTok as of Saturday. Some videos lamented the use of such terms as a subtle form of racism. Others, however, included a clip of a man with chopsticks in his hair and pulling his eyes back to audio of US President Donald Trump explaining why he called COVID-19 the "Chinese virus".

A separate post seen by Al Jazeera showed a picture of a man in a hazmat suit with accompanying text stating he was "just going to pickup [sic] a Chinese".

On the photo-sharing app Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, Al Jazeera found 72,000 posts tagged #WuhanVirus and 10,000 tagged #KungFlu.

Although the first cases of coronavirus were reported in Wuhan, China, the World Health Organization (WHO) employs the name COVID-19 so as not to stigmatise any ethnic group or nationality and give rise to harmful stereotypes.

Responding to Al Jazeera, a Facebook company spokesperson said: "Racism and abusive behaviour is not tolerated on Facebook or Instagram and we remove it when we become aware of it. Those who repeatedly break our guidelines will be banned. We encourage people to report this content when they see it, so we can act."

Twitter said it was "continuing to review and require the removal of Tweets that do not follow the Twitter Rules - half of which we catch before they're ever reported to us". It added that it would "remain vigilant" of the "evolving global conversation".

Al Jazeera reached out to TikTok but the company did not provide an on the record response.

None of the companies contacted by Al Jazeera responded to questions about how many posts they had taken down or the number of users they had reprimanded for racist, xenophobic and inappropriate content since the outbreak began.

'I am not a virus'
Social media firms have faced intense scrutiny around misinformation and fake news since the COVID-19 outbreak began.

Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok have all taken action to ensure reliable sources of information on COVID-19 are promoted high on their sites and atop searches and user feeds. The platforms have also been used for campaigns such as #IamNOTAVIRUS which have sought to counter racist narratives as well as empower those who have faced abuse.

Research by the Atlantic Council think-tank's Digital Forensics Lab (DFRLab) noted there was a significant spike in social media posts employing "dog whistle" terms such as "Chinese virus" after they had been used in news conferences or on news shows by US politicians.

Such findings emphasise that what appears on social media is often a reflection of what happens in the real world.

However, politicians and activists Al Jazeera spoke to believe there is still far more the platforms can do to confront online racism.

Sarah Owen, a UK member of parliament and chair of the Chinese for Labour group, said many social media sites "have not adequately dealt with racism, homophobia or any other kind of abuse in the past".

Owen, who is British-Chinese, said she had been subjected to "old-fashioned racist tropes" when posting about the pandemic online, including "accusations that we all eat strange things". She added that the "use of racist language, especially by public figures, and attributing this virus to just one ethnicity" also pours "fuel [on] existing prejudices".

Cynthia Choi of the US-based Chinese for Affirmative Action said "a reference to the coronavirus/COVID19 other than its scientific name is irresponsible and goes against every leading public health expert because of the stigmatising effect".

She added that "online verbal abuse and threats of violence can lead to offline acts".

Jing, the Chinese vlogger, says the online abuse she experienced noticeably increased after Trump labelled the new coronavirus the "Chinese virus".

Yet having now had time to process the abuse and the hurt it initially caused, she now does not blame the platforms but rather the people who posted the comments themselves.

"If you are racist towards me or have hate towards me, you have hate in you," Jing said. She is also grateful to commenters who stood up for her and tried to shout down those directing the abuse in subsequent posts.

"If more people call this out, that's how we slowly overpower the force of racism," she said. "I feel they [those posting abuse] are blaming a race for what they are responsible for in their own lives."

More than anything, "we need to call them out".

Coronavirus is a completely different family of virus than swine flu virus.

Claiming that this is a different strain of swine flu virus would imply that the whole world is dumb, since all the doctors in the world are testing the patients for a new strain of coronavirus, instead of testing for a new strain of swine flu virus.

.

Not me, I'm anti China.

Looks like some people will shaft all kinds of lies to defend the Chinese, at the end of the day only a liar can protect and defend another liar.

Of course Donald Trump is right. However the World Health Organization has a system in place in naming diseases/illnesses. These procedures were put in place to stop unnecessary harassment of ethnicities/nationalities. If the next one originates in Pakistan, do you want the world calling it the "****-virus"?

WHO named it "covid-19". We're in the middle of an international crisis. Need to call it what it is and work on alleviating it. This isn't the time for politics. Once the crisis is over he can play his political cards however he wants. There are other ways to put pressure on China.

This is a rough but accurate timeline of how the events unfolded, as discussed in this documentary:

Spanish flu survivor, 104, becomes world’s oldest person to overcome coronavirus

Ada Zanusso caught the killer bug at her care home in Biella, northern Italy, where 20 other infected residents had died. Her doctor said she'd "lost none of her lucidity and intelligence"

An Italian grandmother who survived the Spanish Flu pandemic 100 years ago has become the world’s oldest person to overcome coronavirus.

Two female patients, each one year younger than Ada, have also survived the bug.

Im sure she isnt blaming the Chinese having survived the Spanish Flu also

despite its name the Spanish flu also is believed to originate from China

Not true. It came from America and was bought over to Europe by their soldiers. Chinese werent much in Europe in those times you'll find. Which is why they tried to hide it and still call it Spanish flu. I assume Trump thinks it was Spains fault lol

Man, it must suck to be you. Being the unpaid e-saviour of the Palestinians, Kashmiris and Chinese* all at once while you rot away in a country that has you at the bottom rung of the societal ladder and has you pay taxes to create more and more of these conflicts every decade.

Don't think you have been outside the country too much, you are relying too much on stereotypes of Desi's in West

No we are not treated like second class if we were I would never live in a country like that it's not like Saudi or something

Every immigrant group was poor econamicly both white and non white at point but that didn't make tham second class citizen

Again with the stereotyping
These people were kashmiri pakistanis who went because of damn construction not all British-pakistanis and you are just strengthening my point almost no immigrant group anywhere in the world is known for it's academic excellence it takes 3 to 4 generation to settle into society properly(indian, Chinese immigrants were mostly middle class with history of success behind home - very different from every other immigrant group who come out of lower class background) so there is nothing wrong with brit- Pak not taking taking education seriously after more generations in Britain this trend will be set right by brit-pakistanis themselves no need for others groups to worry about
Part of the problem is when your culture is kinda strong it takes longer to assimilate into society Italians for years stayed in the city with not a lot of education cause they feared if they assimilate they will lose their culture so it might take a bit longer for some groups to assimilate but meanwhile you can't call tham second- class citizen cause first it's derogatory and second it's not true either they have the same rights as everyone else and it's hurtful to British-pakistanis who are doing amazing things for Britain and the whole world

Think king Khan can say those things because he's part of the cammunity but it's not other's place to judge their cammunity based on his comments cause it smells a tad bit racist (not saying that you are racist)

U.S. military says coronavirus likely occurred naturally but not certain

U.S. intelligence indicates that the coronavirus likely occurred naturally, as opposed to being created in a laboratory in China, but there is no certainty either way, the top U.S. general said on Tuesday.

The remarks by Army General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, could fan speculation about the coronavirus’ origins — something China has dismissed as a conspiracy theory that is unhelpful to the fight against the pandemic.

Asked whether he had any evidence that the virus began in a Chinese laboratory and was perhaps released accidentally, Milley was non-committal at a Pentagon news briefing.

“There’s a lot of rumor and speculation in a wide variety of media, the blog sites, etc. It should be no surprise to you that we’ve taken a keen interest in that and we’ve had a lot of intelligence take a hard look at that,” Milley said.

“And I would just say, at this point, it’s inconclusive although the weight of evidence seems to indicate natural. But we don’t know for certain.”

Milley’s comments could again stoke tension with Beijing, where Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian wrote on Twitter last month that the U.S. Army might have “brought the epidemic to Wuhan.”

The claim was denounced by the U.S. government and angered U.S. President Donald Trump, who cited it when he called the coronavirus “the Chinese virus” in briefings. The State Department said at the time that China was seeking to deflect criticism of its role in “starting a global pandemic and not telling the world.”

As far back as February, the Chinese state-backed Wuhan Institute of Virology pushed back against rumors that the virus may have been artificially synthesized at one of its laboratories or perhaps got out from there.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...urred-naturally-but-not-certain-idUSKCN21W2UH

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday his government is trying to determine whether the coronavirus emanated from a lab in Wuhan, China, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Beijing “needs to come clean” on what they know.

The source of the virus remains a mystery. General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Tuesday that U.S. intelligence indicates that the coronavirus likely occurred naturally, as opposed to being created in a laboratory in China, but there is no certainty either way.

Fox News reported on Wednesday that the virus originated in a Wuhan laboratory not as a bioweapon, but as part of China’s effort to demonstrate that its efforts to identify and combat viruses are equal to or greater than the capabilities of the United States.

This report and others have suggested the Wuhan lab where virology experiments take place and lax safety standards there led to someone getting infected and appearing at a nearby “wet” market, where the virus began to spread.

At a White House news conference Trump was asked about the reports of the virus escaping from the Wuhan lab, and he said he was aware of them.

“We are doing a very thorough examination of this horrible situation that happened,” he said.

Asked if he had raised the subject in his conversations with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump said: “I don’t want to discuss what I talked to him about the laboratory, I just don’t want to discuss, it’s inappropriate right now.”

Trump has sought to stress strong U.S. ties with China during the pandemic as the United States has relied on China for personal protection equipment desperately needed by American medical workers.

As far back as February, the Chinese state-backed Wuhan Institute of Virology dismissed rumors that the virus may have been artificially synthesized at one of its laboratories or perhaps escaped from such a facility.

Pompeo, in a Fox News Channel interview after Trump’s news conference, said “we know this virus originated in Wuhan, China,” and that the Institute of Virology is only a handful of miles away from the wet market.

“We really need the Chinese government to open up” and help explain “exactly how this virus spread,” said Pompeo.

“The Chinese government needs to come clean,” he said.

The broad scientific consensus holds that SARS-CoV-2, the virus’ official name, originated in bats.

Trump and other officials have expressed deep skepticism of China’s officially declared death toll from the virus of around 3,000 people, when the United States has a death toll of more than 20,000 and rising.

He returned to the subject on Wednesday, saying the United States has more cases “because we do more reporting.”

“Do you really believe those numbers in this vast country called China, and that they have a certain number of cases and a certain number of deaths; does anybody really believe that?” he said.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...ether-virus-came-from-wuhan-lab-idUSKCN21Y01B

China's death toll had been steady at around 3,300 for weeks - until today, when it jumped to more 4,600.

That's because the city of Wuhan, where the outbreak began, raised its death toll by 50% - that's 1,290 cases - attributing it to updated reporting, and more deaths from outside hospitals being counted.

There has been doubt over China's figures for some time, with US President Donald Trump suggesting they "seem to be a little bit on the light side".

Releasing the corrected toll, Wuhan city officials insisted there had been no cover-up of the real figures.

Wuhan's 11 million residents spent 11 weeks in strict lockdown conditions, which have only recently been eased.

Trump warns China could face consequences for virus outbreak

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that China should face consequences if it was “knowingly responsible” for the coronavirus pandemic.

“If it was a mistake, a mistake is a mistake. But if they were knowingly responsible, yeah, I mean, then sure there should be consequences,” Trump told reporters at a daily briefing. He did not elaborate on what actions the United States might take.

Trump and senior aides have sharply criticized China for a lack of transparency after the coronavirus broke out in its Wuhan province. This week he suspended aid to the World Health Organization accusing it of being “China-centric.”

Washington and Beijing, the world’s two biggest economies, have publicly sparred over the virus repeatedly. Trump initially praised China’s response to the outbreak, but he and other senior officials have also referred to it as the “Chinese virus” and in recent days have ratcheted up their rhetoric.

Trump said the U.S.-China relationship was good “until they did this,” citing a recent first-phase agricultural deal aimed at quelling a trade war between the two countries.

He said the question now was whether what happened with the coronavirus was “a mistake that got out of control, or was it done deliberately?”

“There’s a big difference between those two,” he said.

Trump also raised questions about a Wuhan virology laboratory that Fox News this week reported had likely developed the coronavirus as part of China’s effort to demonstrate its capacity to identify and combat viruses. Trump has said his government is seeking to determine whether the virus emanated from a Chinese lab.

Trump also again cast doubt on China’s death toll, which was revised up on Friday. China said 1,300 people who died of the coronavirus in the central city of Wuhan - half the total - were not counted, but dismissed allegations of a cover-up.

Trump claims China wants him to lose re-election race in November

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he believes China's handling of the coronavirus is proof that Beijing "will do anything they can" to make him lose his re-election bid in November.

"China will do anything they can to have me lose this race," Trump said in an exclusive interview with Reuters news agency at the White House.

Trump said he was looking at different options in terms of consequences for China over the virus, also known as COVID-19.

"I can do a lot," he said.

The Republican president, often accused of not acting early enough to prepare the United States for the outbreak, said he believed China should have been more active in letting the world know about the coronavirus much sooner.

Asked whether he was considering the use of tariffs or even debt write-offs for China, Trump would not offer specifics.

"There are many things I can do," he said. "We're looking for what happened."

Before the coronavirus pandemic began, the US and China were already engaged in a trade war that has resulted in billions of dollars in tarrifs.

'Shifting blame to China'
For weeks, Trump has been heaping blame on China for a global pandemic that has killed people nearly 61,000 people in the US according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University and thrown the economy into a deep recession undermining his campaign for a second four-year term.

On Tuesday, he had said he wants to conduct "serious investigations" into China's handling of the pandemic.

"We're doing very serious investigations ... We are not happy with China," Trump said. "There are a lot of ways you can hold them accountable."

Trump had previously referred to COVID-19 as "Chinese virus", igniting a war of words with Beijing, which accused the US military of bringing the disease to Wuhan.

Meanwhile, in the Reuters interview, Trump dismissed latest opinion polls suggesting that his probable Democrat rival Joe Biden was leading in the November 2020 race.

Trump said he did not expect the election to be a referendum on his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and expressed surprise that the former vice president was doing well in the polls.

"I don't believe the polls," Trump said. "I believe the people of this country are smart. And I don't think that they will put a man in who's incompetent."

Trump's public statement contradicts with a New York Times newspaper report, which said that the president had reportedly erupted in anger during a phone call with his campaign manager over the recent polling.

Trump also told Reuters news agency that South Korea had agreed to pay the US more money for a defence cooperation agreement but would not be drawn on the amount of the contribution.

The US president had publicly complained in recent weeks against Seoul and rejected a sum it offered to the cost of US military forces deployed in South Korea.

At least 28,000 US troops are stationed in South Korea.

South Korean legislators said US officials had demanded up to $5bn a year, about five times the 1.04 trillion won ($896m) Seoul agreed to pay in 2019.

China says it has no interest in meddling in U.S. election

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has no interest in interfering in the U.S. presidential election, it said on Thursday, after U.S. President Donald Trump said he believed Beijing would try to make him lose his re-election bid in November.

“The U.S. presidential election is an internal affair, we have no interest in interfering in it,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters during a daily briefing.

“We hope the people of the U.S. will not drag China into its election politics.”

In an interview for Reuters on Wednesday Trump said “China will do anything they can to have me lose this race”, adding that he believed Beijing wants his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, to win the election to ease the pressure Trump has placed on China over trade and other issues.

Trump also said during the interview he was looking at different options in terms of consequences for Beijing over the coronavirus pandemic.

He and other top officials have blamed China for COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus. It has infected more than 1 million Americans and has thrown the U.S. economy into a deep recession.

“There are many things I can do,” Trump told Reuters. “We’re looking for what happened.”

Geng reiterated during Thursday’s briefing that China was a victim of the epidemic and not its accomplice, adding that attempts by “certain politicans” to shift the blame away from their poor handling of the outbreak to Beijing would only “expose the problems of the U.S. itself”.

“The U.S. should know this: the enemy is the virus, not China,” he said.

Fricken good. I Hope the whole world turns on China if we get over this Corona.. ***** you China..

The world is not going to turn on China. If you want India to become the dominant power in Asia, it will need to be done on it's own bat, hoping someone else will wade in for you is not likely to pay dividends. Pakistan found that out to their cost when they thought the US was BFFs back in the 60's and 70's.

Trump says he has ‘high confidence’ Covid-19 originated in Wuhan lab

US President Donald Trump told reporters he believed the novel coronavirus originated at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, declining to elaborate why, after US intelligence said it believes the virus was natural in origin.
Asked on Thursday if he had a “high degree of confidence” that the coronavirus originated at the laboratory, Trump replied “Yes, I have.”

“I can't tell you that. I'm not allowed to tell you that,” was his response to reporters who asked on what basis he was making that judgment.

Earlier in the day, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released a statement saying that the US intelligence community “concurs with the wide scientific consensus that the COVID-19 virus was not manmade or genetically modified.”

US spies “will continue to rigorously examine emerging information and intelligence to determine whether the outbreak began through contact with infected animals or if it was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan,” the ODNI added.

Trump scoffed at the statement when asked about it at the press event, but the ODNI is currently run by his confidant Ambassador Rick Grenell, pending the Senate confirmation of another ally, Congressman John Ratcliffe.

The US president has repeatedly blamed China for the Covid-19 pandemic, arguing that while Beijing locked down Wuhan and the surrounding province, it allowed Chinese nationals to travel abroad, spreading the virus.

The first recorded US cases were among the nationals evacuated from Wuhan in January, but the virus rapidly spread despite a national emergency declaration and draconian lockdowns. More than a million Americans have been infected as of this week, with more than 61,000 fatalities attributed to the virus.

Trump’s finger-pointing at China follows criticism from the Democrats, who have embraced the lockdowns but blame the president for both the deaths and the economic destruction the virus has wrought on the US, with more than 30 million Americans filing for unemployment so far.

Coronavirus: Trump stands by China lab origin theory for virus

US President Donald Trump has appeared to undercut his own intelligence agencies by suggesting he has seen evidence coronavirus originated in a Chinese laboratory.

Earlier the US national intelligence director's office said it was still investigating how the virus began.

But the office said it had determined Covid-19 "was not manmade or genetically modified".

China has rejected the lab theory and criticised the US response to Covid-19.

Since emerging in China last year, the virus has killed 230,000 people worldwide including 63,000 in the US.

The pandemic has seen at least 3.2 million people infected, a million of them Americans, since the virus spread from the city of Wuhan.

What did Trump say?
At the White House on Thursday, Mr Trump was asked by a reporter: "Have you seen anything at this point that gives you a high degree of confidence that the Wuhan Institute of Virology was the origin of this virus?"

"Yes, I have. Yes, I have," said the president, without specifying. "And I think the World Health Organization [WHO] should be ashamed of themselves because they're like the public relations agency for China."

Asked later to clarify his comment, he said: "I can't tell you that. I'm not allowed to tell you that."

He also told reporters: "Whether they [China] made a mistake, or whether it started off as a mistake and then they made another one, or did somebody do something on purpose?

"I don't understand how traffic, how people weren't allowed into the rest of China, but they were allowed into the rest of the world. That's a bad, that's a hard question for them to answer."

The New York Times reported on Thursday that senior White House officials had asked the US intelligence community to investigate whether the virus came from a Wuhan research laboratory.

Intelligence agencies have also been tasked with determining if China and the WHO withheld information about the virus early on, unnamed officials told NBC News.

What did the intelligence service say?

In a rare public statement, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which oversees US spy agencies, said on Thursday it concurs with the "wide scientific consensus" regarding Covid-19's natural origins.

"The [intelligence community] will continue to rigorously examine emerging information and intelligence to determine whether the outbreak began through contact with infected animals or if it was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan."

It was the first clear response from American intelligence debunking conspiracy theories - both from the US and China - that the virus is a bioweapon.

What are Trump's accusations against China?

Mr Trump has recently been escalating his war of words with China over the pandemic after what officials within the US president's administration had described as a truce with Beijing.

On Wednesday, he suggested China wanted him to lose his re-election bid in November.

He has formerly accused Chinese officials of covering up the virus early on and saying they could have stopped the disease from spreading.

He has similarly criticised the WHO and withdrawn US funding for the global body.

China's foreign ministry, meanwhile, has accused the Trump administration of trying to distract from its own problems tackling the crisis.

A ministry spokesman has also repeatedly promoted the idea - without evidence - that Covid-19 might have originated in the US.

According to the Washington Post, the Trump administration is looking into ways to punish China financially. Discussions reportedly include allowing the US government to sue China for damages or cancelling debt obligations.

Is this man okay? His intelligence agency just publicy stated the virus was not manmade or genetically modified and he comes out in the next press conference and says yes it is manmade but I can't tell you I'm not allowed. Does he just say anything that comes to his mind, in that moment he just decided "I'm gonna go against my own intelligence agency and fuel some wild conspiracy theory because I saw it on Fox News". I will never understand this 70 year old toddler.

Trump calls coronavirus a 'very bad gift from China'

President Donald Trump has called the coronavirus "a very bad 'gift' from China", less than an hour after marking the 100,000 US deaths milestone.

"All over the World the CoronaVirus, a very bad “gift” from China, marches on. Not good!," Trump wrote on Twitter.

US Asians, harassed over coronavirus, push back on streets, social media

A spike in harassment of Asian-Americans since the coronavirus pandemic began has led community activists in the United States to fight back — forming street patrols, rallying on social media, and supporting each other online.

Nine out of 10 victims have been targeted because of their race, with 37 per cent of incidents taking place in public areas, according to Reuters.

Verbal harassment and shunning occurred in over 90pc of the cases. Victims were physically assaulted, or coughed or spat on, in some 15pc of cases.

In some Chinatowns, volunteer patrols are forming to protect residents and confront harassers. The Guardian Angels, with patrols in over 130 cities worldwide, are recruiting in US Asian communities for the first time in 41 years.

Can't call it a Chinese virus but happily call it as Indian variant - hypocricy of Western World?

I was watching news today and was quite aghast by their hypocricy. Likes of BBC/Sky kept on calling it an Indian variant as if it was manufactured in India. The same western media who were after Donald Trump for calling it a Chinese Virus and were adamant that linking virus to a country is wrong. If this is not open hypocricy, not sure what is.

Well it is an Indian variant, I think even that has been split down into further categories, pretty sure one is being called the Kent variant. China is disputing that the virus originated in China, that is where the dispute arises. I don't think that there's been any contention that the variant has sprung in India.

False equivalence.

Variant is not the same as the origin of the Virus. We have the British, Sout African and other variants.

Western governments dont care for brown people even Indians. So India doing their bidding in the region makes no difference to how they see you or care for you.

False equivalence.

I dont think so. The reason Trump was shut down was not bcoz there wasnt enough proof that the virus eliminated from China. Infact everyone is aware that it started in Wuhan lab. But calling it Chinese virus i.e calling the spade a spade was considered racist back then. Hence the narrative was given, especially by western world that the blame of virus goes to everyone and singling out China was racist.

Same folks now openly calling it as Indian variant. Lol. Clear hypocricy.

There is a UK strain, a Brazilian one, one from South Africa, one from California, one called Indian.

But but but, there is no Chinese Wuhan Corona virus.

Thats the hypocrisy of the left media and that's why right wing is slowly getting popular.

Mate I think you should be the last one debating about Media.
To you if it's not Indian State Propaganda then it's fake news.

Whilst we're at it perhaps a little context should be applied here.
Trump wanted to save the trade deals and initially refused to blame China until some official in China claimed that the virus might have been planted by the states.

After that Trump started calling it the China Virus and Kung Flu which got criticism because some thugs in the states started beating up American Asians.

So what Trump did was irresponsible.
Calling it the Brazilian, South African or Indian variant is not to say that these countries caused it. That remains as Wuhan.

Ideally they can be called by their scientific name but then no one will remember that and it would be difficult to apply for various other logistical reasons. So the variant name for joe public remains the country where that mutation occurred.

I think India's biggest concern (other then the pandemic of course) is how they let themselves be played by America.
Whilst a so-called "buffoon" prime minister (Boris) held daily pressers for his nation the PM of India disappeared, allowed his country to be used as a proxy against China taking his eye off the ball and letting the virus wreak havoc

What do we call it then ?

It’s a variant that has come from India.

Everyone knows that Covid 19 originated from China so it doesn’t need to be called the China virus but the variants do need a name because no one would remember the scientific name for the variants.

Why does it matter to any sane thinking individual as to what name is given to it? Eradicating it totally from India at the earliest without letting it cause much
more destruction should be our primary concern and not what name is given to it by anyone!

But no, there is that false pride being associated with us being Visha gurus and hence this rona dhona over its nomenclature!
