President Donald Trump says it is time the US recognises Israel's sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, which it captured from Syria in 1967.

In a tweet, Mr Trump declared that the plateau was of "critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and regional stability".

Israel applied its administration and law to the Golan in 1981, but other governments did not recognise the act.

Syria has consistently sought to regain sovereignty over the region.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has warned about the military "entrenchment" of his country's arch-enemy Iran in the Syria conflict, tweeted his thanks to Mr Trump on Thursday.

"At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights," he wrote.

There was no immediate response from the Syrian government.

I wish Pak had the resources and the financial might to go station an aircraft carrier outside Israel or have a squadron of fighters stationed in Syria or Jordan to keep this tiny pest of a country Israel in check.

Golan heights belongs to Syria . This shameless potato should know better.

Even most Arab countries recognise it as part of Israel.

Considering that Russia and Iran have effectively won in Syria, this proclamation hangs between two guys who are likely to end up in prison

I think considering how much Pakistan and Pakistanis have gone through in the last 2 decades..the wars..the terrorism sponsored by Afghanistan, India, US and Iran.,,the killings...kashmiris being martyred and raped..soldiers/policemen dieing day in day out...
Did the world give a damn? No sir they didnt...

I would let Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, America and Israel decide who this potato shaped Golan heights belongs to.

I am sorry I am sounding bad, but I have reached to the point of maturity in my life where my moto is ‘Pakistan first’!

At some stage Pakistan will need to engage with Israelis. Need to make sure that we are able to get assurances that their weapons won’t be use against us. We can’t count count on Indian incompetence to save us all the time

Nah, that neighborhood deserves each other.

I absolutely agree with you. For any Pakistani, Pakistan's interests should come first and they should not get involved in these disputes. However, we can condemn such brazen atempts to legitimize occupation.

As in constructive dialogue?

Trump formally recognises Israeli sovereignty over Golan Heights

US President Donald Trump on Monday formally recognised Israeli sovereignty over the Israel-occupied Golan Heights, reversing decades of US policy.

The announcement came as Benjamin Netanyahu visited the White House in a trip the Israeli prime minister said he was cutting short after an early morning rocket, allegedly fired from the besieged Gaza Strip, struck a home in central Israel, wounding seven people.

Israel began striking Hamas targets in Gaza later on Monday, the Israeli military said. Hamas had earlier denied its movement was behind the overnight rocket.

Monday's decree formalised Trump's statement last week, saying it was time for the United States "to fully recognise" Israeli sovereignty over the Golan. The move appeared to give Netanyahu a boost ahead of the closely contested April 9 Israeli elections.

"This was a long time in the making," Trump said alongside Netanyahu in the White House.

"Today, aggressive action by Iran and terrorist groups in southern Syria, including Hezbollah, continue to make the Golan Heights a potential launching ground for attacks against Israel - very violent attacks," Trump said. "This should have been done numerous presidents ago."

'Blatant attack'
Israel seized much of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War and then effectively annexed it in 1981, a move that was never recognised by the international community.

Syria's foreign ministry called the US decision to recognise Israeli sovereignty over the Golan a "blatant attack on the sovereignty and territorial integrity" of Syria, according to a statement carried by state news agency SANA.

"The liberation of the Golan by all available means and its return to the Syrian motherland is an inalienable right," the statement added. "The decision ... makes the United States the main enemy of the Arabs."

Earlier this month, a senior US administration official told reporters in Washington that there was "no change in [US] outlook or our policy vis-a-vis these territories and the need for a negotiated settlement there".

The official was responding to questions about why the US changed its description of the Golan Heights in its latest annual human rights report in which the area was referred to as "Israeli-controlled", not "Israeli-occupied" as it was previously stated.

Trump, who has shown robust support for his country's close ally Israel, recognised Jerusalem as the country's capital in 2017, defying international consensus and angering Palestinian leaders, who view Israeli-annexed East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Do it after the Arabs have stationed entire batallions of troops to help their Pakistani brothers capture Kashmir - from the valley to the plains, from the glaciers to the rivulets.
