FIREBRAND Dutch anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders has launched his election campaign with a stinging attack on the country’s Moroccan population, calling them “scum” and saying he wanted to make The Netherlands “ours again”.

Mr Wilders has been leading opinion polls ahead of crunch elections on March 15, seen as a litmus test of European politics after Brexit and Donald Trump’s victory in the United States.

“The Moroccan **** in Holland ... once again not all are **** ... but there is a lot of Moroccan **** in Holland who make the streets unsafe, mostly young people ... and that should change,” Mr Wilders told a scrum of journalists before attempting to take a stroll at a market in Spijkenisse, just south of Rotterdam.

“If you want to regain your country, if you want to make The Netherlands for the people of The Netherlands, your own home again, than you can only vote” for his Freedom Party, Wilders said.

“Please, make The Netherlands ours again,” said the far-right politician, sporting his trademark peroxide hairdo as a small group of supporters chanted “Wilders! Wilders!” in the background.

The MP, who has vowed to ban the Koran and close mosques should he be voted into power, was convicted of discrimination in December over previous comments he made about Moroccans living in The Netherlands.

But his words about “fewer Moroccans” have found some traction among traditional supporters worried about immigration and jihadist attacks across Europe in recent years.

The latest combined opinion polls give Wilders and his PVV party between 24-28 seats in the 150-seat lower house of parliament, two to four seats ahead of Liberal Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s ruling VVD party.

Support for Wilders — who posed for selfies and shook hands with supporters on the town’s medieval square — varied widely and after he left several angry arguments between pro and anti-Wilders supporters broke out.

“We are all voting for Wilders this year,” said one supporter Danny, 59, who declined to give his surname “because that’s dangerous in this country these days.”

“It’s not safe in the streets anymore especially in the big cities,” he told AFP stroking his beard, as he watched Wilders stroll around under heavy police protection.

Wilders’s views have seen him receive death threats including from terror groups such as the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda. He is guarded at all times and called the “best protected man in The Netherlands”.

“Geert Wilders is polarising people against one another,” said Theo de Boer, 50, as he walked away from the market clutching a bunch of flowers.

“He discriminates and I totally disagree with him. We have a constitution and freedom of religion is one of its most important pillars,” De Boer said.

What these far right nutcases don't realise is their own people will suffer the consequences of their hateful preaching. There are still sane voices like De Boer who realise the consequences of all this Muslim bashing going on in the world.

The rise of the authoritarian populist Right all over Europe and the US is highly disturbing. This is a reaction to the 2008 crash, plus hyperglobalisation forcing down wages. People are sick of being broke and turning to the fascists for easy answers, blaming the Other.

Hyperglobalisation also forced down prices. With wages going up, expect to see inflation doing the same in the next few years.

Wilders seems to have a very strong chance of winning his election, and Le Pen a modest chance of winning hers. Europe is entering a new era of intolerance and it will end in bloodshed. (As it always does in Europe!) Only since 1945 has Europe not been actively at war all of the time.

Its a cycle.Until we achieve a balance between liberalism and right wing conservatives.Free for all immigration was always going to be an issue in the western world.Always.The rise of "islamic"extremism just hastened its pace.

Europe chose liberalism after hyper nationalistic nazism and fascism caused the 2nd WW.Others followed around the world. Now again the right wing nationalism is rising and all over the world. This is not good. There has to be a balance how that will be achieved i dont know.Just to add that this isnt normal nationalism, where all citizens ae considered the same, this is racist nationalism.

The worst thing about Wilders is that - like basically every so called "right wing" European leaders - he's not even a genuine fascist/national socialist. He doesn't fight liberalism in the name of higher principles, but he wrestles neo liberalism in the name of its own degenerated counter cultural markers (freedom, homosexuality, ...) against a traditional order.

Conservatve-liberal party?

The German, French and Dutch elections will be interesting this year

There has been a recent new phenomenon in Europe, the far right have been taken over by Zionism. People like Wilders, Brevik, groups such as the EDL, Britain first and others have changed their main policy to being against Islam. Jews are no longer an issue for such , they are seen as Israeli's who are fighting Islam, thus allies. Zionist groups such as the ADL, Jihad watch etc provide the narrative, arguments for them to use. This new Zionist right use very clever tactics in collaboration with the media and certain governments to push their agenda smoothly, only issue being their followers are sometimes often too stupid to toe the line.

the left in Europe has to go through a deep period of soul searching and come up with a way to combat right wing populism. Its getting battered everywhere.

Democracy is failing. So much for Western nations pointing fingers at the East in general, and Islam in particular.

Bilal7 Democracy is still better than the other options out there be it authoritarian military dictatorships authoritarian monarchies or authoritarian mullahs which arent held accountable for their actions. Without a free press there couldnt be the constant questioning and scrutiny against leaders. in Pakistan we see the difference between press freedom when the army gets in power and when theres a civilian government.

Because the "free" press is actually free and not controlled by one or two powerful families with vested interests. Even the legitimate ones are powerless to stop the rising bigotry and hatred that is plaguing Europe and North America.

Democracy is failing, it hasn't failed yet which is why you can make these comments. Thank God for Canada.

Bilal7 living in the worlds oldest democracy that already fought off fascism when the rest of Europe was overran by the yoke of Nazism. I think i will be fine.

Is it "democracy" that is failing though? Centre-left and moderate politics, certainly these things seem to be failing. But Trump, Brexit, Wilders, Le Pen etc are all things that have happened / are in fact happening as a result of the democratic process working as it should - as in, one vote per person in line with that person's opinions - the nature of the politics aside.

It is. Democratic ideals of equality, non-discrimination, equal rights, freedom of religion, etc, etc are all being compromised through this very system of governance.

I hope you are fine as well.

Erdogan has just given Wilders a massive boost only days before the Dutch go to the polls.

Why couldn't the Turks have waited a week or so before holding their rally in the Netherlands?

Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned the Netherlands it will “pay the price” for harming relations with Turkey in an escalation of a diplomatic row over political campaigning among Turkish immigrants.

“We will teach them international diplomacy,” the Turkish president said in Istanbul on Sunday, repeating accusations that the Dutch government was fascist and declaring: “Nazism is alive in the west.”

Mark Rutte, the Dutch prime minister, said he had tried to defuse tensions during eight calls with his Turkish counterpart over the weekend, including one at 2am on Sunday.

Riot police clashed with protesters in Rotterdam on Saturday night after The Hague expelled Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya, Turkey’s family minister, and escorted her to the border after she arrived by car from Germany. Ms Kaya had planned to campaign for votes among the Netherlands’ large Turkish community ahead of a constitutional referendum.

The expulsion followed a refusal by Dutch authorities to allow Mevlut Cavusoglu, the foreign minister, to enter the country.

Ms Kaya tweeted after her expulsion: “Democracy, fundamental rights, human rights and freedoms. All forgotten in Rotterdam tonight.”

The Dutch move sparked protests by more than 1,000 people outside the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam, where riot police with dogs and water cannon dispersed them.

Mr Erdogan had earlier branded the Dutch government “fascist” after it blocked a flight carrying Mr Cavusoglu, who had planned to campaign in support of constitutional changes that could give Mr Erdogan sweeping new powers.

The dispute between the two Nato members comes just three days before a Dutch general election in which immigration and integration are set to play a crucial role. Mr Rutte’s People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy has taken an increasingly tough line on those issues to stave off a challenge from Geert Wilders’ anti-Islam and anti-immigration Party for Freedom.

Footage of protesters with Turkish flags may play into Mr Wilders’ hands, with the populist politician having campaigned for “disloyal” citizens with dual nationality to be deported if they misbehave.

“We have a fifth column in the Netherlands,” tweeted Mr Wilders, whose support in the polls has been sagging in the weeks running up to the vote. “If your loyalty lies elsewhere then get out. No more dual nationality.”

Other politicians called for unity. Alexander Pechtold, leader of the centrist D66, applauded the way police had handled the protest.

On Saturday evening, the Turkish foreign ministry reportedly closed off access to the Dutch embassy in Ankara and consulate in Istanbul for “security reasons” and said it did not want the Dutch ambassador to return to his post in Turkey. A man climbed on to the roof of the Dutch consulate and replaced the Netherlands’ flag with a Turkish one.

Mr Erdogan thanked France for allowing Mr Cavusoglu to go ahead with a campaign gathering that drew more than 100 people in the northern city of Metz on Sunday.

At least four Turkish campaign events in Europe aimed at mustering support for Mr Erdogan ahead of the April referendum have been cancelled in the past week, prompting Mr Erdogan to accuse German authorities of engaging in “Nazi practices”. That triggered protests from ministers in Berlin already exercised by the detention of Deniz Yücel, a Turkish-German journalist working for Die Welt newspaper.

On Saturday, Mr Erdogan levelled the same accusation at the Netherlands. “They do not know politics or international diplomacy,” he said. “These Nazi remnants, they are fascists.

“You can stop our foreign minister’s plane all you want, let’s see how your planes will come to Turkey from now on,” he added.

Mr Erdogan is relying on Turkish citizens living in Europe — at least 1.5m in Germany alone — for support in the referendum. Turks living aboard tend to support him in greater numbers than those at home.

The row in Europe may benefit Mr Erdogan. By drawing attention to perceived double standards on free speech and hinting that the west is against him, he has been able to shore up his support among nationalists.

“It certainly helps our campaign here, while reminding voters that the EU is against Turkish progress,” said a Turkish official.

Mr Cavusoglu, who had threatened the Netherlands with economic sanctions, addressed Turkish citizens in Hamburg from the balcony of a consular residence after local authorities cancelled rallies citing public safety.

The Dutch government said it had asked Mr Cavusoglu to consider moving the rally to a more private setting but the threat of sanctions had scuppered any such discussion. “Before these talks were completed, Turkish authorities publicly threatened sanctions. That makes the search for a reasonable solution impossible,” the Dutch government said.

What is turkey playing at... i find Turks to be fanatically patriotic which can blind you to common sense.

Why should Turks be holding rallies in other countries for a referendum being held back home.

Eagle_Eye Turkey is having a referendum on changing its current parliamentary system to a Presidential system with an executive presidency that will give the current President Erdogan a lot more constitutional powers. The Turkish govt is lobbying Turks living abroad to vote in their favour by holding these rallies. Erdogan has recently moved away from NATO and the West after having Turkeys repeated attempts to join the EU blocked and he is moving towards the Russian axis. Also there has been big tension between Turkey and EU states after Erdogans tough crackdown on opposition politicians and media outlets after the attempted coup last summer 40,000 teachers being sacked. They have accused Turkey of becoming an illiberal democracy and Erodgan of becoming more despotic. Erdogan and the current AKP govt is using these standoffs with Netherlands and Germany to get support of Turkish Nationalists home and abroad to vote Yes for the constitutional reforms.

The problem is that far right politicians like Wilders are already accusing their Turkish population and other immigrants of being 5th columnists and not completely loyal to where they live and now we have videos of young Turks in Rotterdam behaving agressively, flying the Turkish flag and chanting "takbir, allahu akbar" which is exactly what the far right want to see.

I get all that and they have legitimate grievances, but why are they bringing politics of back home to another country, especially in the current climate. He might have killed the political career of Dutch PM.

Maybe Erdogan wants Wilders to win. When Wilders wins and his government discriminates against Turks he can say told you they were Nazis.

Eagle_Eye if Wilders or far right politicians do well in Netherlands and Germany. Erdogan can justify his move away from the E.U to Russia to his electorate by saying look how racist these countries are. They always hated us anyway. Germany and Netherlands are having their own elections soon and dont wanna provide security for a foreign diplomat on a rally at this time.

Totally agree CJ, Can you imagine PM Modi rallying a gathering in somewhere like the United States, would never happen

Erdogan has really kicked up a stink in Europe
I don't blame them for chucking out his ministers

Not true. He gained 4 seats.
But he is not the biggest.
This whole turkey saga didnt help him.

Why should a foreigner be allowed to hold a rally in another country?

I seen plenty of times the European leaders go to other countries to speak at party gatherings of sister parties or others they share ideology with. They just don't like Eurdogan who is taking his country in a more Islamic direction.. They would have loved if the coup was successful.

Not surprisingly Dutch are quite arrogant and 'racist' in some terms anyways. Met a lot of dutch people in England when I was studying there and they openly recognized that fact - embarrassingly at times. They do not tolerate other ethnicity well and don't show much interest in knowing other cultures , I am not surprised that this guy is trying to ride on that mentality

I had a conversation with a guy from Central Asia who worked in Holland and seemed to think the Dutch were quite well mannered. I suppose you can be a polite racist though.

Wilders lost it when he was challenged on how he would go about removing every Quran from the Netherlands. Which would obviously entail sending armed personnel into mosques and into homes of Muslims which is completely anti thetical to the liberal democratic model and general western european attitudes of liberty that the type of action is what you would expect from a fascist or communist. These far right wing promises might sound good but on a practical level they are very hard to implement in a europe that is still scarred by the horrors of Nazism and Fascism although some are forgetting the horrors of these movements with each passing generation.

Well quite possible they aren't , this is what I have been told by some Dutch lads themselves. One of my very good friends is Dutch and he says yeah they aren't very tolerant

Perhaps the tide of right-wing populism reached its high water mark with Brexit, and is receding.

Much ado about nothing in the end.

The Brexit and Trump comparisons are inaccurate by the way. Wilders wants to shut down mosques and ban the Koran, he is way more extreme than Trump.

Wilders isn't your regular fascist Hitler type of ideology follower. He is a Zionist Islamaphobe, which the true right wing realised and stopped supporting him. Holland doesn't have any role in the war of terror which means it has little to worry about in terms of terrorism on it's soil.

Holland maybe facing challenges but imo is still one of the most liberal countries.
